Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →“0x800700” is not a complete Windows error code. It is a prefix shared by several different errors, and the final digits determine the cause and the correct repair. Copy the entire hexadecimal code (for example, 0x80070070 or 0x80070005), note what Windows was doing, and then use the matching fix below. The same prefix can appear during Windows Update, an upgrade, setup, Microsoft Store activity, activation, or another operation, so there is no single universal repair.
What the Microsoft 0x800700 prefix means
Windows reports many operating-system failures in hexadecimal form. Codes beginning with 0x800700 generally identify a standard system error, but the suffix changes the meaning. Microsoft documents 0x80070070 as an insufficient-space condition, 0x80070005 as access denied, 0x80070002 as a missing file, 0x80070003 as a missing path, and 0x80070020 as a file being used by another process. These are separate problems even though their first characters match.

Write down the complete message before changing anything. Include the application or settings page that displayed it, the operation that failed, your Windows edition and version, and whether the failure happens every time or only with one update or file. This context determines which built-in troubleshooter and repair command are appropriate.
Capture the details before troubleshooting
- Copy the complete code. Do not shorten it to “0x800700.” If the dialog includes a second code, a KB number, a file name, or a path, record those too.
- Record the operation. State whether you were installing a Windows Update, upgrading Windows, running setup, opening the Store, activating Windows, copying a file, or doing something else.
- Identify the Windows version. Press
Windows + R, enterwinver, and record the version and build shown. The Settings layout and available troubleshooters vary by release. - Save the exact wording. A message such as “The system cannot find the file specified” points to a different branch than “Access is denied,” even when both begin with the same prefix.
- Note recent changes. Record a recent upgrade, restored backup, new security program, disconnected drive, policy change, or manual permission edit. This helps explain a missing path, a locked file, or a permissions failure.
Low-risk checks to try first
These checks do not alter Windows permissions or delete system components. Perform them in order, then retry the exact operation that failed.
#1 Best Overall
- 1. COMPATIBLE WITH WINDOWS 11, 10, 8.1 & 7 Designed for compatible 64-bit PCs and laptops that support USB booting. Works with Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 installation and recovery options.
- 2. INSTALL, REINSTALL & REPAIR Provides access to installation and recovery options for startup failures, boot errors, system crashes, failed updates, system repair and reinstallation. Results depend on the condition of the computer and the cause of the problem.
- 3. READY-TO-USE BOOTABLE USB Reusable installation and recovery media that helps eliminate the need to download large system files or create bootable media yourself. Insert the USB drive, open the computer’s boot menu and select the appropriate installation or recovery option.
- 4. HELP KEEP OLDER PCS USEFUL Refresh, reinstall or maintain a compatible older computer before deciding whether replacement is necessary. Suitable for home computers, office workstations, PC enthusiasts and technicians who regularly work with supported systems.
- 5. IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY & LICENSE INFORMATION Supports compatible 64-bit computers with UEFI or Legacy BIOS USB booting. No Windows license, activation key or product key is included. Activation may require an existing digital license or a separately purchased valid product key. Back up important files before installation or repair.
- Restart Windows. A restart releases files left open by an installer and reloads update services. After signing in, retry before making deeper changes.
- Check date, time, and time zone. Open Settings > Time & language > Date & time, enable automatic time and time-zone settings where appropriate, and use Sync now. An incorrect clock can interfere with update and activation workflows.
- Confirm the network. Verify that the computer is online, reconnect Wi-Fi or Ethernet if necessary, and retry without a captive portal or unstable connection. If another device works on the same network, the issue may be local to Windows.
- Check free space on the system drive. Open Settings > System > Storage. A nearly full system drive is the documented first suspect for
0x80070070. Remove only files and applications you recognize, and empty temporary-file categories deliberately. - Disconnect unnecessary external devices. Remove unused USB drives, card readers, and external disks, then retry. Keep any drive that contains the files or installation media required by the operation.
- Retry once. If the same complete code returns, stop repeating the operation and follow its code-specific branch. Repeated retries do not repair a missing path, denied permission, or corrupted component store.
Choose the branch for your complete code
| Complete code | Microsoft-documented meaning | First response |
|---|---|---|
0x80070070 |
Insufficient disk space during an update or upgrade | Free space on the system drive, restart, and retry. |
0x80070005 |
Access denied; servicing lacks a required permission | Inspect the CBS log, identify the denied object, and correct permissions carefully. |
0x80070002 |
The specified file cannot be found in the setup context | Verify required updates and disks, then use the matching Windows Update or setup troubleshooter. |
0x80070003 |
The specified path cannot be found | Run the Windows Update troubleshooter and reset update components or clear the cache only when indicated. |
0x80070020 |
Another process is using the file | Restart, close background applications, and follow Microsoft’s antivirus guidance only if the procedure calls for it. |
If your suffix is not listed, do not assume that one of these fixes applies. Keep the complete code and the operation that produced it, then use the troubleshooter for that operation or escalate with the logs described below.
Fix 0x80070070: insufficient disk space
Microsoft describes 0x80070070 during Windows Update or an upgrade as an insufficient-disk-space error. The relevant space is normally on the drive Windows uses for the installation, usually the system drive, not merely an external drive with free capacity.
Free space without risking personal files
- Open Settings > System > Storage and review the drive summary.
- Open Temporary files. Select categories you understand, review the listed sizes, and remove them. Do not select a category merely because it is large if you still need its contents.
- Open Installed apps and uninstall applications you no longer use. Keep installers, recovery tools, and work software that you still need.
- Move or archive large personal videos, photos, and documents to a trusted destination, confirming that the copy opens before deleting the original.
- Empty the Recycle Bin after checking its contents.
- Restart Windows, return to the failed update or upgrade, and retry.
If the drive has adequate free space but the code returns, record the available-space figure and the update or setup name. The failure may involve another prerequisite or a different suffix that was misread; do not continue deleting system folders at random.

Fix 0x80070005: access denied
0x80070005 means that the operation was denied a required permission. During servicing, the denied object may be a file, folder, registry object, or another protected resource. This is not a signal to delete random files from C:Windows or to grant full control to every user.
Find the denied object in the CBS log
- Open File Explorer and go to
C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.log. - Make a copy of the log before editing or moving anything. The log can be large; use Notepad’s Find command to search for
0x80070005,Access is denied, and the timestamp of the failed attempt. - Record the exact file, registry path, or component named near the failure. Correlate the time with the update history so you do not repair an unrelated older entry.
- Check whether the operation is being run from an administrator account. If it is not, sign in with an authorized administrator or use the approved elevated prompt for that operation.
- Correct only the identified object’s permissions, following Microsoft’s servicing instructions for your Windows version. Preserve inherited permissions and ownership unless the documented procedure specifically requires a change.
- Restart Windows and retry the update or setup operation once.
Security software, organizational policy, or a damaged permissions tree can also produce access-denied symptoms. If a managed work computer is involved, ask the administrator to review the policy rather than overriding it yourself. If the CBS log does not identify a specific object, preserve it for support instead of guessing.
Fix 0x80070002: the specified file is missing
0x80070002 indicates that Windows cannot find a required file in the setup context documented for the failure. The missing item may be part of an update, installation source, or a disk that was unavailable when setup looked for it.
Check the source and required media
- Reconnect the external disk, USB storage, or installation media that the operation requires. Confirm that it appears in File Explorer and that the expected path is readable.
- For Windows Update, open Settings > Windows Update, review Update history, and note the specific update that failed.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter from the Windows troubleshooting settings. Use the setup troubleshooter instead when the failure occurred during an upgrade or installation.
- Retry with the same source and account. Do not point setup at a similarly named folder unless the instructions for that installation explicitly permit it.
If the file is on a network or removable drive, verify that the path remains available for the entire operation. A drive letter that changes after reconnecting can make a previously valid source appear missing.
Fix 0x80070003: the specified path is missing
0x80070003 identifies a missing path rather than merely a missing file. During Windows Update, the path can be part of the update cache or servicing workflow.

Use the Windows Update repair path
- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters on Windows 11, or the equivalent troubleshooting page for your Windows release.
- Find Windows Update, select Run, and allow the troubleshooter to inspect the service and update configuration.
- Apply only the changes it recommends, restart if prompted, and retry the update.
- If the documented result maps the code to update-component corruption, use Microsoft’s reset-components procedure for your Windows version. This may include clearing the update cache; do it only after recording the failed update and preserving logs.
- Confirm that the Windows Update service and the path named in the error are available. A service that is disabled by policy or a path redirected to a disconnected drive must be restored by the appropriate administrator.
Do not delete arbitrary folders under C:Windows. A cache reset is a controlled troubleshooting step, not a general cleanup technique, and the exact procedure differs by Windows release.
Fix 0x80070020: a file is in use
0x80070020 means that another process has the file open. Installers and update services cannot replace a file while an application, background utility, or security product is holding it.
- Restart Windows to release handles left by a previous installation.
- Close browsers, document editors, media players, synchronization clients, and other applications that might use the affected file.
- Pause nonessential background work and retry the operation before launching additional programs.
- If Microsoft’s procedure for your specific update instructs you to do so, temporarily disable a third-party antivirus product for the retry, then re-enable it immediately afterward. Do not make this change merely because the code appears; follow the documented procedure and your organization’s security policy.
- If the code returns, record which application was open, the exact update, and the time. A persistent lock may require support to identify the process safely.
Run DISM and SFC when corruption is indicated
Microsoft recommends the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) and System File Checker (SFC) sequence when the component store or protected Windows files are corrupted. The sequence is documented for component-store corruption codes such as 0x800f081f and 0x800f0831; it is not a universal response to every 0x800700 suffix.

- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt. - Enter
Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealthand press Enter. Allow it to finish without closing the window. - When DISM completes, enter
Sfc.exe /Scannowand press Enter. Wait for verification to reach 100 percent. - Restart Windows, then retry the operation that produced the error.
Use an elevated window for both commands. If either command reports that it could not complete, save the message and the time; repeated runs without addressing the reported condition are unlikely to help. DISM and SFC repair Windows components and protected files, not a missing external installation source or an intentionally denied permission.
Run the matching built-in troubleshooter
The operation that failed determines the correct troubleshooter. For Windows Update, open Settings > Windows Update, then use the Windows Update troubleshooter in the troubleshooting settings. For an upgrade or installation failure, use the setup or installation troubleshooting path associated with that workflow. Store, activation, and other Microsoft services may expose their own diagnostic pages.
Let the troubleshooter finish, read each detected issue, and record what it changed. Restart when requested. If it reports that components or a cache must be reset, follow the version-specific Microsoft procedure rather than combining unrelated reset scripts from the internet.
Collect evidence and escalate when the error persists
When the documented branch does not resolve the problem, stop making increasingly broad changes. Microsoft recommends collecting data and contacting support for unresolved servicing cases.
Preserve these items
- The full hexadecimal code and exact message.
- Your Windows edition, version, and build from
winver. - The operation, update name or KB number, and the time of each failure.
- Windows Update history and any troubleshooter result.
C:WindowsLogsCBSCBS.logfor servicing or access-denied failures.- The DISM and SFC commands you ran and their final messages.
- A list of removable drives, security software, or recent system changes relevant to the failure.
Provide this package to Microsoft Support or your organization’s Windows administrator. Tell them which steps were successful and which produced the same code. Do not email logs containing personal or organizational information to an untrusted recipient.
Quick Recap
Mistakes to avoid
- Do not troubleshoot the prefix alone. A fix for insufficient space does not address access denied or a missing path.
- Do not delete protected Windows files or registry entries at random. For
0x80070005, identify the denied object in the CBS log first. - Do not reset update components before recording evidence. Cache resets can remove clues that support needs.
- Do not leave third-party antivirus disabled. Only perform a temporary disable when the applicable Microsoft procedure calls for it, and re-enable it immediately.
- Do not treat DISM and SFC as universal cleaners. Use them when component-store or protected-file corruption is indicated, run them elevated, and restart afterward.
- Do not assume an external drive’s free space solves an installation-space error. Check the Windows system drive identified in Storage settings.
As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL files, and it can clean temporary and cache files. It also includes settings adjustments, privacy and vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredder and crash log; it runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and offers a category-based free trial of at least two days before a subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
