On PS5, restart the console, check the disc or entitlement, move the game to internal storage if it is on USB extended storage, restore licenses, update system software, and reinstall the game before using Safe Mode. For repeated crashes, check for a game update and adequate ventilation, then perform a clean reinstall. On Xbox Series X|S, Metro 2033 Redux is listed as compatible, but current Xbox-specific procedures should come from Xbox Support because the available support pages do not provide a verifiable Metro-specific sequence.
“Metro Redux” refers to Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux, both released in 2014. There is no confirmed, game-specific defect in the available official guidance that explains every launch failure or crash on current consoles, so the steps below separate documented platform troubleshooting from general publisher advice.

First identify exactly what is failing
Before deleting anything, record the title and symptom. The two Redux games can fail differently, and a licensing lock is not the same problem as a crash after a level loads.

|---|---|
| Is it Metro 2033 Redux or Metro: Last Light Redux? | Support needs the exact product name; “Metro Redux” is a family name, not one game. |
| Disc or digital download? | Disc inspection and account entitlement checks apply only where relevant. |
| Does it fail before the title screen, show a black screen, freeze at a menu, or crash at a repeatable point? | A reproducible location is useful to the publisher even when no known defect has been announced. |
| Is there an error code or a padlock icon? | An error or entitlement problem calls for account, license, or service checks rather than treating the issue as a crash. |
| Do other games launch normally? | If only one Redux title fails, provide that comparison to support; do not infer a console hardware fault from one game. |
Write down the console model (PS5, PS5 Digital Edition, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S), whether the copy is installed internally or on external storage, and the game version shown in the console interface. If the problem repeats, capture a short video or screenshot without exposing account or payment information.

PS5: Metro Redux will not launch
PlayStation’s official “How to troubleshoot issues when starting a game” guidance gives a progression from simple checks to more disruptive recovery. Follow the steps that match your copy type and stop when the game works.
1. Check the disc, if you own a disc copy
- Eject the disc and inspect it for fingerprints, dirt, cracks, or obvious damage.
- Clean it carefully with a soft, lint-free cloth, wiping from the center toward the edge rather than in a circular motion.
- Reinsert the disc and allow the console to recognize it before trying to start the game again.
A disc that is not recognized is a different failure from a digital installation that crashes. If the same disc fails while other discs work, include that detail in a support request.
2. Move the installation from USB extended storage
If the game is installed on a USB extended-storage drive, move it to the PS5’s internal storage and test again. PlayStation includes this as an early launch-troubleshooting step. Use the PS5 storage settings to select the game, choose the move option, and wait for the transfer to finish before launching. Do not disconnect the drive during the transfer.
This step changes only the installation location; it is not a promise that external storage caused the failure. It is useful because it removes one storage path from the diagnosis without immediately deleting the game.
3. Restart the PS5
Use the console’s normal power menu to restart, then try the Redux title again after the system returns to the home screen. A restart is preferable to repeatedly forcing the console off while a game or system update is writing data.
4. Restore licenses for a digital copy
If the game shows a lock, refuses to start despite being installed, or appears to have lost ownership, restore licenses from the PS5 account settings. Confirm that you are signed in to the account that purchased the game. If access came through a subscription, verify that the subscription is active and that the title is still included in its catalogue.
Also check whether console sharing and offline play is enabled on the intended PS5, and look at PlayStation service status if several digital games or account functions are unavailable. A license refresh cannot repair a damaged installation, so return to the installation steps if the title is unlocked but still crashes.

5. Delete and redownload the game
When restarting, storage migration, and licensing checks do not help, delete the game installation and download it again. PlayStation suggests using a wired network connection if possible. Confirm that the console has enough free space for the complete download and any update before beginning.
Deleting the application is not the same as deleting saved data. Review the PS5 storage menus carefully and preserve saves you still need. A reinstall replaces the game files; it does not guarantee that a crash caused by a particular save, account state, or future patch will disappear.
6. Update PS5 system software
Install any available PS5 system-software update, restart the console if requested, and then test the current game installation. Keep the console connected to power and the network during the update. Do not interrupt an update by unplugging the system.

7. Use Safe Mode to clear cache and rebuild the database
PlayStation lists Safe Mode cache clearing and database rebuilding as later troubleshooting measures. They are more involved than a normal restart, so use them after the preceding checks and follow the current on-screen instructions exactly. Read the warning for each Safe Mode option before confirming it; options are not interchangeable, and some can change how content is indexed or stored.
Safe Mode is not evidence that Metro Redux has a unique cache defect. It is a general PS5 recovery tool recommended by PlayStation for persistent start problems.
8. Treat system-software reinstallation as a last resort
Reinstalling PS5 system software is substantially more consequential than rebuilding a database. Back up important data first and use only the current PlayStation procedure. Do not choose this option merely because one Redux game crashes unless PlayStation Support directs you to it after less destructive steps have failed.
PS5: the game launches, then crashes or freezes
For a crash after the title screen, menu, or a level begins, use the publisher’s general crash guidance before escalating.
Check updates and cooling
- Check the PS5 game menu for an available update and allow it to complete.
- Make sure the console has adequate ventilation. Keep air vents unobstructed, avoid enclosed spaces that trap heat, and remove dust according to Sony’s maintenance guidance.
- Do not place the console on a soft surface that blocks airflow.
PLAION’s “Basic troubleshooting” guidance for Metro: Last Light Redux is explicitly general and may vary by game and platform. It does not establish that overheating, corrupted data, or a particular Metro bug is the cause of your crash.
Test for a repeatable trigger
After the update and ventilation checks, note whether the crash occurs at the same menu, level, checkpoint, or loading transition. Try one controlled test rather than repeatedly replaying long sections. Record the title, console model, game version, exact reproduction steps, and any displayed code. A short recording is especially useful when the console returns to the dashboard without an error message.
Reinstall if crashes continue
Use a clean reinstall if the game still crashes. Keep the save-data distinction in mind: remove the game application, not the saved data you intend to keep. If the crash returns at precisely the same point after a fresh installation, report that pattern instead of repeatedly deleting and downloading the game.
PS5 black screen, loading loop, or a stuck title screen
A black screen can mean the game is still loading, the display handshake failed, the installation is damaged, or the application stopped responding. Give a newly installed game time to finish any background update, then use the normal PS5 menu to close and restart it. If the console itself is unresponsive, follow PlayStation’s current Safe Mode and restart guidance rather than disconnecting power during disk activity.
When the screen stays black only for Metro Redux while other games display normally, include your display setup and the exact point of failure in the report. Do not claim that a specific television, HDMI mode, or graphics setting is the cause unless official support identifies it.

Xbox Series X|S: what is confirmed and what to do
The official Xbox Store lists Metro 2033 Redux for Xbox Series X|S. The store also identifies a Metro Redux Bundle containing both Redux games. Store listings and compatibility labels can change, so verify the edition attached to your account or disc.

Current Xbox Support pages for restarting a console and resolving game issues were not readable in the available material, so a precise button sequence or cache procedure would be unreliable here. Use the current instructions on Xbox Support for your exact console and symptom instead of following an unverified “clear the cache” recipe.
If Metro 2033 Redux or Last Light Redux will not start
- Confirm the exact game and edition, then check the Xbox Store or your library for ownership and installation status.
- Check Xbox service status if multiple games, sign-in, or store functions are failing.
- Open the current Xbox Support guidance for console restart and game-launch problems and follow its sequence for Series X|S.
- If the issue is limited to one Redux title after those steps, contact PLAION support with the title, console model, edition, game version, error code, and reproduction steps.
Do not assume that deleting local saves, reinstalling, power cycling, or clearing a cache is a proven Metro fix. Those actions can have data consequences and should be performed only when current Xbox instructions explain what is removed and how cloud synchronization is handled.
If the Xbox game crashes during play
Check for an available game update and ensure the console is placed where its ventilation openings are not blocked. Then use the current Xbox troubleshooting flow. If a reinstall is recommended, verify that saved progress is synchronized before removing the application or any local data. A repeated crash at one level should be documented for PLAION rather than described as a confirmed widespread defect.
Disc, download, and entitlement checks
| Copy type | Checks that apply | Checks that do not explain the symptom by themselves |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 disc | Disc condition, recognition, correct disc inserted, installation location, system software | Restoring a digital license alone will not repair a damaged or unreadable disc |
| PS5 digital | Purchasing account, subscription entitlement if applicable, console sharing, service status, restore licenses, download integrity | A visible installation does not prove that the current account has access |
| Xbox disc or digital | Exact edition, account ownership, store/service status, current Xbox Support procedure | An unverified cache or save-deletion routine should not be treated as a Metro-specific fix |
What the announced 2026 console update changes
As of October 16, 2026, PLAION says the free console upgrade for Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux is scheduled for October 29, 2026 worldwide, with Japan scheduled for November. That date is still in the future at the time of writing. Recheck the official announcement and patch notes after release before describing the update as available.
Deep Silver’s announcement says the update is planned to add native PS5, PS5 Pro, and Xbox Series X|S support, 4K textures, community-led bug fixes, and other platform enhancements. Announced display modes include true 4K at 60 frames per second and upscaled 4K at 120 frames per second with suitable display hardware. Full technical patch notes are to be revealed at launch.
The FAQ characterizes the change as a quality-of-life upgrade, not a remake or remaster, and says it will be free for existing owners; new purchasers are expected to receive the next-generation update automatically for the listed Redux games. These are release-plan statements, not proof that the update has already fixed a particular launch failure or crash. If your problem began before October 29, install the update when it becomes available and retest, but keep the original reproduction details for support.

Quick Recap
Quick decision flow
- Locked or not owned: check the purchasing account, subscription entitlement, console sharing, and service status; restore the license on PS5.
- Disc not recognized: inspect and clean the disc, then report a persistent recognition failure.
- Never reaches the title screen: restart, move a PS5 installation from USB to internal storage, update system software, and reinstall if needed.
- Crashes after loading: check the game update and ventilation, document the trigger, then reinstall.
- Still failing on PS5: use Safe Mode cache/database options, reserving system-software reinstallation for a backed-up, support-directed last resort.
- Still failing on Xbox Series X|S: follow current Xbox Support instructions and send a complete reproduction report to PLAION if only one Redux game is affected.
