MDT error 0x80004005 (also shown as 2147467259 or -2147467259) is a generic failure result, not one specific fault. The reliable fix is to identify the task-sequence phase in BDD.log, the LiteTouch logs, or Smsts.log, then apply the matching repair for BIOS boot files, Sysprep capture, package content, or MDT integration. The title is commonly mistyped as 0x800004005; Microsoft documentation uses 0x80004005.

Start with the failing phase

Do not change a task sequence at random. Record the exact step that failed, the firmware mode of the computer, and whether the sequence is deploying Windows, capturing an image, downloading a package, or creating a task sequence in Configuration Manager. The same hexadecimal code appears in all of those situations but the remedies are different.

  1. Correct your notes and searches to 0x80004005.
  2. Write down the last successful and first failed task-sequence steps.
  3. Collect BDD.log, the LiteTouch logs, and Smsts.log from the deployment computer or deployment share.
  4. Search the logs for distinctive text such as BCDBootEx, LTIApply.wsf, Hash Value failed, or an MDT WMI/integration error.
  5. Back up files before changing a script or replacing an MDT DLL.
Where it fails Evidence to look for Likely repair
Boot or apply-OS stage on a BIOS-firmware computer LiteTouch reports “Return Code = 2147467259 0x80004005” and the log points to BIOS/BCDBootEx handling Install the Microsoft MDT update files and regenerate affected media
Sysprep and Capture LTIApply.wsf attempts to take ownership of a missing Boot folder Create the boot-folder check before the existing takeown logic
Package download or execution Smsts.log says “Hash Value failed” or the hash is incorrect Remove extended-ASCII characters from filenames and recreate the package, or download all content locally
Creating an MDT task sequence in Configuration Manager The wizard fails before deployment and MDT WMI classes are not registered correctly Remove and reinstall the MDT Configuration Manager integration

Fix a BIOS-firmware deployment failure

Microsoft documents a Windows 10 deployment failure on BIOS-firmware computers where LiteTouch ends with “Return Code = 2147467259 0x80004005.” In this path, the failure is associated with the MDT boot-file utility and BCDBootEx, rather than with a general Windows corruption problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Replace the MDT utility files

  1. Download and extract MDT_KB4564442.exe from Microsoft.
  2. Close Deployment Workbench and any process that may have an MDT file open.
  3. Back up the existing Microsoft.BDD.Utility.dll in both the x86 and x64 folders: %ProgramFiles%Microsoft Deployment ToolkitTemplatesDistributionToolsx86 and %ProgramFiles%Microsoft Deployment ToolkitTemplatesDistributionToolsx64.
  4. Replace each original DLL with the corresponding updated file from the extracted package. Keep the backups until the deployment has completed successfully.
  5. Regenerate the deployment share, boot image, or removable/network media as required by your environment. Existing media can retain the old binary, so replacing the file alone is not enough when the media has already been built.
  6. Run the same task sequence again on a BIOS-firmware test computer and inspect the new logs if it still fails.

This remedy is specific to the BIOS/BCDBootEx pattern. Applying it will not correct a hash mismatch, a Sysprep boot-folder problem, or an unregistered MDT integration.

Fix Sysprep and Capture failures caused by a missing Boot folder

During a Sysprep and Capture sequence, LTIApply.wsf can fail when it tries to take ownership of a boot folder that does not exist. The resulting message is commonly shown as “Litetouch deployment failed, Return Code = -2147467259 0x80004005.”

Add the folder-existence check

  1. Make a backup copy of LTIApply.wsf before editing it.
  2. Locate the existing code that takes ownership of the boot folder.
  3. Immediately before that takeown logic, add a check for sBootDrive "Boot". If the folder is absent, create it, then allow the existing ownership code to continue.
  4. Save the script, update the deployment share, and regenerate any boot media or images that contain the script.
  5. Repeat the capture while watching the logs for the next failing step.

The partition layout explains why this can appear only on some reference computers. An image installed from Windows media can have a 350 MB System Reserved partition, whereas an MDT-deployed image may use a 499 MB partition. The smaller layout can leave insufficient room for the WinPE image and expose the missing-folder path during capture. Check the partition arrangement of the reference machine instead of assuming every capture computer is identical.

Fix package filename and hash mismatches

If Smsts.log contains “Hash Value failed or hash value is incorrect,” treat the error as a content-integrity or naming problem first. Microsoft identifies a scenario in which extended-ASCII characters in package filenames are downloaded or named differently from the expected content, causing the calculated hash to differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rename and recreate the package

  1. Inventory every file and folder in the affected package, including nested content.
  2. Rename files and folders to use simple characters such as letters, numbers, underscores, hyphens, and periods. Remove extended-ASCII characters from names.
  3. Recreate or redistribute the package so the deployment system calculates a new hash for the renamed content.
  4. Retry the task sequence and verify that the client downloads the newly created package rather than a cached copy.

Download content locally before the sequence starts

If renaming is impractical, select the task-sequence option to download all content locally before the task sequence begins. This changes when content is staged and can avoid the name translation that produced the mismatch. It does not repair a genuinely changed or incomplete package, so recreate the package when the logged hash still differs after staging locally.

Fix MDT integration errors when creating a task sequence

When the failure occurs in Configuration Manager while you are creating an MDT task sequence, before a client boots, the problem can be an MDT WMI registration issue. In that case, changing boot files or package names addresses the wrong phase.

Rebuild the Configuration Manager integration

  1. Close all Configuration Manager consoles and related administrative windows.
  2. Run Configure ConfigMgr Integration on the computer where MDT integration is installed.
  3. Choose the option to remove the MDT console extensions and complete the removal.
  4. Run the integration wizard again and install the MDT extensions.
  5. Reopen Configuration Manager and create a new MDT task sequence to test the registration.

If the wizard still fails, collect the creation-time logs and confirm that the console was closed during both removal and installation. This path is for task-sequence creation; it does not replace the BIOS, capture, or package fixes above.

What the code does—and does not—tell you

Windows displays 0x80004005 as a generic failure result. The decimal form 2147467259 and the signed form -2147467259 represent the same underlying hexadecimal value when different MDT components format the result. The code alone cannot identify whether the cause is firmware mode, partition capacity, a script assumption, package naming, or integration registration. The adjacent log message and the failed phase are the diagnostic information you need.

Validate the repair safely

  • Test on a representative machine: use the same BIOS or UEFI mode, disk layout, Windows edition, and network path as the failing deployment.
  • Rebuild dependent artifacts: regenerate deployment media after replacing a utility DLL or editing LTIApply.wsf; recreate packages after renaming content.
  • Check the next log: a different error after the original 0x80004005 is gone usually means the first blocker was fixed and the sequence has progressed.
  • Keep rollback copies: retain the original DLLs and script until a complete deployment or capture succeeds.
  • Avoid broad changes: do not alter unrelated task-sequence steps merely because they run near the failure.

MDT support status and a migration decision

Microsoft’s current troubleshooting guidance states: “Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) is now retired.” For a new deployment design, Microsoft advises removing MDT task-sequence steps and MDT integration and considering modern provisioning approaches such as Windows Autopilot. Configuration Manager operating-system deployment remains supported for on-premises environments.

Retirement does not make an existing deployment share fail automatically, and it does not change the phase-specific repairs above. It does mean that long-term maintenance should include a plan to reduce dependence on MDT-specific scripts, WMI classes, and extensions. Treat a repaired sequence as a controlled short-term operational fix while you evaluate a supported provisioning path for future devices.

For an optional shortcut after you have identified the failing phase, Outbyte PC Repair can check and repair some common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, review settings and vulnerabilities, and log application crashes. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, offers a free trial by category for at least two days before a paid subscription, complements an antivirus rather than replacing one, and results vary; no tool repairs every deployment failure.
