| “Unable to add to home” | The accessory did not complete setup. | Use an updated iPhone or iPad, check power, Bluetooth, compatibility, network requirements and prior pairing. |
| “Thread Border Router Required” | The accessory uses Thread and the Apple device does not currently provide a required Thread border router. | Provide a compatible Apple or third-party Thread border router. |
| “Needs Thread Network” | The accessory needs access to a Thread network that is not available to the current setup. | Check the Thread-enabled hub, its network connection and the accessory’s firmware. |
| “No Response” | The accessory was added to Home but is not responding to commands. | Choose the one-manufacturer or several-manufacturer troubleshooting branch. |
Apple separates these cases in its support procedures: the March 9, 2026 article “If your HomeKit or Matter accessory isn’t responding in the Home app” covers “No Response,” while the May 12, 2026 article “If you can’t add a smart home accessory to the Home app” covers setup failures.

Record the details before changing anything
Write down the exact alert, accessory brand and model, and whether the product uses Wi‑Fi or Thread. Also record whether it was previously paired with another app or another Home, which iPhone or iPad you are using and its software version, and whether the manufacturer’s app can control the device.

Fix “Unable to add to home”
Use an iPhone or iPad for setup
Apple says a Mac cannot add accessories in the Home app. Use an iPhone or iPad, update iOS or iPadOS, and turn on Bluetooth before starting.
- Install available software updates on the iPhone or iPad.
- Open Settings and make sure Bluetooth is on.
- Confirm that the model supports Apple Home or Matter. Check the manual for a required bridge, hub, manufacturer account or firmware update.
- Keep the phone or tablet near the accessory during pairing.
Prepare the accessory and home network
- Verify that the accessory is powered on and showing its ready-to-pair state.
- Move it closer to the Wi‑Fi router during setup. This reduces the chance that a weak signal interrupts commissioning.
- Restart any third-party bridge involved in the setup, then restart all Apple home hubs.
- Try adding the accessory again from the Home app.
Do not guess at a factory-reset sequence. Button timing and reset indicators differ by model; use the maker’s documented procedure if the accessory remains unavailable.
Check Wi‑Fi band requirements
Some accessories require 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi and do not work on 5 GHz. Matter does not mean every product has the same radio requirement, so check the specific model’s manual. If Apple reports that the network is incompatible, verify the band and any setup requirements before changing router settings.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHandle an accessory that was already paired
An accessory used in another Home or manufacturer app may need to be reset before it can be added again. If it was previously paired in another app, Apple’s setup guidance says to open that app and generate a Matter pairing code, then use the code to finish adding the accessory in Home. Depending on the product, the code may be supplied as a QR code or as an 11- or 21-digit Matter code.
Pairing ownership is a frequent source of confusion. A device can appear powered and reachable in the maker’s app while still being owned by a different Matter fabric or Home. Do not repeatedly scan an old code; use the current code generated by the app that previously commissioned the accessory, and follow any on-screen removal or transfer step first.
When a bridge or home hub is involved
A bridge translates a manufacturer’s accessories for Apple Home, while an Apple home hub provides Home functions such as remote control. Restart the third-party bridge and every home hub before repeating setup. If only that bridge’s accessories fail, keep troubleshooting the bridge and its firmware instead of changing unrelated Wi‑Fi settings.

Know which piece of hardware you actually need
| Component | Purpose | When it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturer bridge | Connects that maker’s non-Matter or proprietary accessories to Home. | Only that maker’s products fail, or the manual requires a bridge. |
| Apple home hub | Runs Home automations and enables access while you are away. | Remote control or household Home functions are required. |
| Thread border router | Connects a Thread mesh to the home IP network. | The accessory uses Thread or Home shows a Thread alert. |
These roles can overlap in one product, but they are not interchangeable. Buying or rebooting a home hub will not fix a Wi‑Fi password problem, and a bridge will not create a Thread network unless its specifications say it includes that function.
Resolve “Thread Border Router Required” and “Needs Thread Network”
What the Thread alerts mean
Thread is a low-power mesh network used by some Matter accessories. A Thread accessory needs a Thread border router to communicate with the rest of the home network. Apple displays “Thread Border Router Required” or “Needs Thread Network” when the current Apple device does not provide the required Thread capability.
Apple lists these Thread-enabled devices in its January 13, 2026 support article:
| Apple device | Thread capability described by Apple |
|---|---|
| Apple TV 4K (2nd generation) | Thread-enabled home hub and border-router option |
| Apple TV 4K (3rd generation, Wi‑Fi + Ethernet) | Thread-enabled home hub and border-router option |
| HomePod (2nd generation) | Thread-enabled home hub and border-router option |
| HomePod mini | Thread-enabled home hub and border-router option |
A compatible third-party Thread border router can also provide the Thread network. A HomePod mini is therefore a conditional hardware option for a Thread setup, not a universal remedy for Matter devices. Adding a hub is relevant only when the accessory uses Thread or Apple explicitly reports a Thread requirement.
Check an existing Thread setup
- Turn the Thread-capable hub off and on.
- Try setup or control from an Apple device signed in to the account used for the Home.
- If an Apple TV is connected by Ethernet, connect it to Wi‑Fi on the same network as the iPhone or iPad, following Apple’s specific troubleshooting advice.
- Move the accessory and hub away from sources of radio interference where practical.
- Turn on Bluetooth on the iPhone or iPad.
- Open the manufacturer app and install any available firmware, paying particular attention to battery-powered accessories.
- Review Apple’s network, VPN and third-party security guidance if the Thread network still does not appear.
Thread is a mesh, so placement and power state matter. A battery accessory may take longer to rejoin than a mains-powered router. After a third-party Thread device is disconnected for five minutes and reconnected, wait ten minutes before judging the result; testing immediately can produce another temporary “No Response.”
Understand local Thread pairing on iPhone
Apple’s iPhone User Guide for the iOS 27 context says Thread-enabled iPhones can locally pair and manage Thread accessories. The manufacturer may still require an update, and local pairing does not eliminate the need for a hub or border router for every Thread feature or operating condition.

Fix a Matter accessory that shows “No Response”
Apple recommends checking after each step. First decide whether the unresponsive accessories come from one manufacturer or several; the shared-network checks are broader when multiple makers are affected.
Only one manufacturer’s accessories show “No Response”
- Turn on Bluetooth on the iPhone or iPad used with Home.
- Restart each affected accessory. For battery-powered models, removing and reinserting the batteries may be required.
- Open the manufacturer app and check for firmware updates or an offline status.
- Restart the manufacturer’s third-party bridge, if present, and restart all Apple home hubs.
- For a third-party Thread accessory, disconnect its power for five minutes, reconnect it, then wait ten minutes for the Thread network to stabilize before testing.
- If the accessory remains unresponsive, remove it from Home and follow the manufacturer’s instructions to reset and add it again.
A reset can erase the accessory’s existing configuration. Use the maker’s exact model procedure rather than a generic button combination.
Accessories from several manufacturers show “No Response”
- Update the iPhone, iPad or Mac used to manage the Home.
- Close and reopen the Home app.
- Connect the Apple device to the same Wi‑Fi network used by the accessories.
- Turn on Bluetooth.
- Restart the affected accessories and check each manufacturer app for firmware updates.
- For third-party Thread accessories, remove power for five minutes, reconnect, and allow ten minutes for Thread to settle.
- Restart the modem or router, third-party bridges, Apple home hubs, accessories and the Apple device.
- Temporarily review VPN and third-party security software settings that could block local-home traffic, following Apple’s network guidance.
Remote control from outside the home requires a home hub configured for the Home. A hub requirement for remote access is separate from the Thread border-router requirement for a Thread accessory.

Use the manufacturer app to locate the fault
| What you observe | Most useful next action |
|---|---|
| The accessory works in the manufacturer app but not in Home. | Check Apple device software, Bluetooth, shared Wi‑Fi, home hubs and the accessory’s Home pairing. |
| The accessory fails in both Home and the manufacturer app. | Check power, firmware, the maker’s bridge or hub, and the maker’s model-specific reset procedure. |
| Only products from one maker fail. | Focus on that maker’s firmware, bridge, accessories and account or pairing state. |
| Products from several makers fail together. | Check the shared router or Wi‑Fi, Apple software, hubs, VPN and security software. |
| Apple reports a Thread requirement. | Provide a compatible Thread border router, then verify hub placement, network connection and firmware. |
This comparison prevents an unnecessary factory reset when the real fault is a shared network or an unavailable Thread service.
Network and security checks that are easy to miss
When several brands fail at once, treat the router and Apple device as shared dependencies. The iPhone, iPad or Mac used to manage Home should be on the same Wi‑Fi network as the accessories during local troubleshooting. A VPN or third-party security product can interfere with local-home traffic; review those settings temporarily and restore normal protection after testing. Restart the modem or router only after recording any custom settings you may need to re-enter.
Do not force every device onto 2.4 GHz merely because one product needs it. Some models support 5 GHz, some require 2.4 GHz, and Thread accessories use a separate radio. Follow the model manual and Apple’s exact incompatible-network message instead of changing several router settings at once.

Safely remove and add the accessory again
Re-pairing is the last step after power, software, network and bridge checks. Use this sequence:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open the manufacturer app and check whether it offers a firmware update or identifies the accessory as already paired.
- Save any settings you need to recreate, because a reset can remove them.
- Remove the accessory from Apple Home only when the earlier checks have failed.
- Follow the manufacturer’s exact reset instructions for the model.
- Place the accessory near the router or Thread border router during setup.
- Use the QR code or 11- or 21-digit Matter code supplied by the manufacturer. If another app previously owned the pairing, generate a new code from that app as Apple describes.
- After adding it, apply any required manufacturer firmware and test local control before relying on remote access.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a Mac to add the device: Apple’s Home app on Mac cannot perform accessory addition; use an iPhone or iPad.
- Resetting before identifying the error: “No Response” usually calls for power, firmware, hub and network checks first.
- Confusing a bridge with a border router: they solve different transport and compatibility problems.
- Testing Thread too quickly: allow the five-minute power disconnect and subsequent ten-minute stabilization period for third-party Thread devices.
- Reusing an obsolete Matter code: generate a current code in the app that previously paired the device.
- Ignoring the manufacturer app: firmware, ownership state and model-specific reset instructions live there.
Choose the right troubleshooting branch
| Decision point | Branch to follow |
|---|---|
| Cannot complete initial setup | “Unable to add to home” steps: iPhone or iPad, updates, Bluetooth, power, proximity, compatibility, Wi‑Fi band, prior pairing and maker reset. |
| Setup stops on a Thread message | Thread border-router steps and hub/network checks. |
| Accessory was previously paired elsewhere | Generate a Matter pairing code in the previous app, then reset if the maker requires it. |
| One maker is unresponsive after pairing | Accessory, firmware, bridge, home-hub and manufacturer-app checks. |
| Several makers are unresponsive | Shared Wi‑Fi, router, Apple software, hubs, VPN and security checks. |
| Failure occurs in the manufacturer app too | Manufacturer support, firmware and model-specific reset instructions. |
When to contact Apple or the accessory maker
Contact the accessory manufacturer when you need a model-specific firmware file, pairing procedure, reset sequence or explanation of a status shown in its app. Include the exact model, firmware version if visible, transport type (Wi‑Fi or Thread), whether it was paired to another app or Home, and the precise Apple alert.
Contact Apple Support when accessories from multiple manufacturers remain affected after Apple’s general restart, update, network and security steps. Apple’s support guidance specifically directs users to Apple when the broad Home environment—not one accessory—continues to fail.
Final checklist
- Read the exact message: “Unable to add to home,” “No Response,” “Thread Border Router Required” or “Needs Thread Network.”
- Use an updated iPhone or iPad for adding accessories; a Mac cannot add them in Home.
- Turn on Bluetooth and verify power, proximity and Apple Home or Matter compatibility.
- Check whether the model needs 2.4 GHz Wi‑Fi, a bridge or Thread infrastructure.
- Use the manufacturer app for firmware, prior-pairing status and reset instructions.
- For “No Response,” choose the one-maker or several-maker path before removing anything.
- For Thread accessories, confirm a compatible border router and allow time for the network to stabilize after a power cycle.
- Do not perform an undocumented factory reset; use the maker’s procedure and escalate with the recorded details.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Apple Home say “Unable to add to home”?
It is a setup failure. Use an updated iPhone or iPad, turn on Bluetooth, confirm power and compatibility, check the model’s Wi‑Fi or Thread requirements, and verify that it is not still paired to another app or Home.
What is the difference between “Unable to add to home” and “No Response”?
“Unable to add to home” means commissioning did not finish. “No Response” means the accessory was added but is not answering now, so use the power, firmware, bridge, hub and network steps for an existing accessory.
Can I add a Matter accessory with a Mac?

For a third-party Thread accessory, disconnect power for five minutes, reconnect it, and wait ten minutes for Thread to stabilize before testing. Also check firmware, Bluetooth, hub connectivity and interference.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Should I factory-reset a Matter device that will not connect?
Only after the earlier checks fail and only by following the manufacturer’s exact model procedure. A reset can erase configuration, and generic button sequences may be wrong.
Who should I contact when troubleshooting fails?
Contact the manufacturer for firmware, pairing and reset instructions. Contact Apple Support when accessories from several manufacturers remain affected after Apple’s update, restart, network, VPN and security checks.
The Bottom Line
Match the alert to the failure stage, then narrow the cause by manufacturer scope and transport. Use an iPhone or iPad with Bluetooth for setup, follow the maker’s firmware and reset instructions, and add Thread infrastructure only when the accessory requires it.
