Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStart by checking that your PC meets DOOM: The Dark Ages’ minimum requirements, then work through storage, Windows graphics settings, overlays, drivers, and in-game quality before considering a hardware upgrade. The game requires a ray-tracing-capable GPU even at minimum settings, and Bethesda’s published performance targets are specifications—not a promise of perfectly steady frame rates in every scene.
Check whether your PC meets the game’s requirements
Compare your CPU, graphics card and dedicated VRAM, system memory, Windows version, and storage drive with the published specifications. In particular, a graphics card must support hardware ray tracing; a card without that capability does not meet the stated minimum, even if you lower the graphics settings. Bethesda Support says most performance issues can be attributed to hardware.

| Target | CPU | GPU | Memory | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum: 1080p, 60 FPS, Low settings | AMD Zen 2 or Intel 10th generation; 3.2 GHz, 8 cores/16 threads or better | Ray-tracing-capable NVIDIA or AMD GPU with 8GB dedicated VRAM or better; examples: RTX 2060 Super or RX 6600 | 16GB RAM | 512GB-or-larger NVMe SSD, with 100GB available |
| Recommended: 1440p, 60 FPS, High settings | AMD Zen 3 or Intel 12th generation; 3.2 GHz, 8 cores/16 threads or better | Ray-tracing-capable GPU with 10GB dedicated VRAM or better; examples: RTX 3080 or RX 6800 | 32GB RAM | NVMe storage |
| Ultra 4K: 2160p, 60 FPS, Ultra settings | AMD Zen 3 or Intel 12th generation; 8 cores/16 threads or better | Ray-tracing-capable GPU with 16GB dedicated VRAM or better; examples: RTX 4080 or RX 7900 XT | 32GB RAM | NVMe storage |
These are Bethesda’s published tiers, not independent benchmark results or a guarantee that a system will maintain the target in every situation. Steam also lists the minimum and recommended CPU, RAM, graphics, NVMe storage, and 100GB available-storage requirements. Check Bethesda’s PC specifications and the Steam store listing for the full published requirements.
Move the game to an NVMe SSD and enable GPU scheduling
Bethesda Support specifically instructs players to install the game on an NVMe solid-state drive, not a hard disk drive. Check where the game is installed and, if necessary, move or reinstall it to an NVMe drive that has enough free space. This is a requirement-compliance step, not a guarantee that an SSD will resolve every frame-rate or stutter problem.

Also check Windows’ Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling setting. Bethesda recommends enabling it; the troubleshooting guide says it may address intermittent freezes on supported NVIDIA GPUs. Search Windows Settings for “Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling,” open the graphics settings result, turn the setting on if available, and restart Windows if prompted.
Close overlays and background apps
Temporarily disable overlays and capture tools while diagnosing performance. Turn off Steam Overlay, Xbox Game Bar, and third-party overlays such as MSI Afterburner or RivaTuner, then close unnecessary applications that may be using memory or competing for GPU resources. Test the game after each change so you can identify whether a particular program is involved.
Recording and monitoring software can have symptom-specific conflicts. Bethesda documents cases involving OBS, ShadowPlay, and MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner; the relevant workarounds are covered below. Do not assume every overlay causes every kind of stutter.

Install a supported current graphics driver from the relevant GPU vendor and check Bethesda’s support page for current compatibility guidance. Bethesda’s performance article lists AMD driver 25.5.1 and NVIDIA driver 576.40 as minimum versions in that article; driver support can change, so treat those as the page’s stated minimums rather than a guarantee that they are the latest versions.

- NVIDIA Ampere Streaming Multiprocessors: The all-new Ampere SM brings 2X the FP32 throughput and improved power efficiency.
- 2nd Generation RT Cores: Experience 2X the throughput of 1st gen RT Cores, plus concurrent RT and shading for a whole new level of ray-tracing performance.
- 3rd Generation Tensor Cores: Get up to 2X the throughput with structural sparsity and advanced AI algorithms such as DLSS. These cores deliver a massive boost in game performance and all-new AI capabilities.
- Axial-tech fan design features a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure.

In the game’s Graphics settings, lower graphics quality and test again. If the issue began after you changed several options, restore auto-detected settings to establish a baseline. Steam players can also select Launch in Safe Mode to start with safer settings. Change one setting or group at a time where practical; that makes it easier to tell which adjustment affects performance.
Make sure the game uses the right GPU and power profile
On laptops and other multi-GPU systems, the game may use integrated graphics or a power-saving profile instead of the intended high-performance GPU. Set the game executable to use the primary GPU in NVIDIA Control Panel or AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition. In Windows, choose a high-performance power profile, and plug a laptop into power while playing.
Verify files and isolate other software conflicts
If the basic checks do not help, confirm that the installation is intact using the verification instructions for your storefront. Bethesda links to steps for Steam, the Xbox app, and Battle.net on its PC performance support page. Check that antivirus software is not blocking the game or launcher; Bethesda’s guide includes antivirus exclusion instructions.
As later-stage diagnostics, Bethesda recommends testing with a new Windows user profile and using Windows Selective Startup to identify a conflicting program. These steps are more involved than disabling overlays or lowering settings, so try the simpler checks first.

Use the workaround that matches the specific symptom
Bethesda’s PC troubleshooting guide describes several configuration-specific issues. Apply a workaround only when your hardware, software, and symptom match the case.
- RTX 50-series crash with synchronization and Multi Frame Generation: Bethesda reports a crash combination involving G-Sync or V-Sync and Multi Frame Generation configured through NVIDIA Control Panel. Try disabling one of those options in NVIDIA Control Panel, or configure both options in the game instead.
- MSI Afterburner or RivaTuner instability: Bethesda says these overlays may cause stability problems. Close them and retest.
- OBS capture trouble: Bethesda documents OBS freezing visuals during Alt-Tab capture in Fullscreen, and cases where OBS running in the background can crash the game. Use the guide’s workaround for the matching capture or crash symptom.
- ShadowPlay hangs or TDRs on some RTX 50-series GPUs: Bethesda says ShadowPlay combined with 3x or 4x Multi Frame Generation can cause these problems on some systems. Test without that combination.
- Intermittent freezes on supported NVIDIA GPUs: Enable Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling if it is not already on.
The same support page notes that MSI Claw devices and systems using Intel Panther Lake processors are not supported and may have performance issues. Check Bethesda’s current guidance if you use either, since support and known issues can change.
When to consider a hardware upgrade
First identify which published requirement your system misses. A GPU upgrade is relevant if your card lacks hardware ray tracing or falls below the dedicated-VRAM tier for your target; it will not correct an unrelated CPU, memory, storage, or software bottleneck by itself. Compare the whole system against the intended resolution and settings: the minimum tier lists 8GB dedicated VRAM and 16GB RAM, the recommended tier lists 10GB and 32GB, and Ultra 4K lists 16GB and 32GB, respectively. The published tiers do not establish that any one graphics card is universally the best upgrade.
