Compare the same scene under the same settings, then check power, GPU routing, drivers and—only in the supported case—Windows’ windowed-game optimization. Change one thing at a time so you can tell what helped.
First, distinguish low FPS from stuttering
Low average FPS means the game is consistently rendering fewer frames than you want. Stuttering means frame delivery is uneven: the average may look acceptable even while individual slow frames make play feel jerky. They can occur together, but one does not prove the other.

Build a repeatable baseline
Choose a scene you can reproduce and record the game, resolution, graphics settings, display mode, whether the laptop is plugged in, and whether the problem starts immediately or appears after sustained play. Avoid changing several settings between runs.

Where compatible, NVIDIA FrameView can log average and percentile FPS, dropped frames, CPU and GPU utilization, clocks, temperature and power. Percentile FPS and frame-time or scheduling information can reveal uneven delivery that an average hides. Check power and the laptop’s performance profile
For a performance test, connect the power adapter recommended for your exact laptop and select the manufacturer’s performance or gaming profile. The names and controls vary by model. Performance modes can increase fan noise and power use, so they are not necessarily the best choice for quiet operation or battery life.
NVIDIA’s notebook power-mode reference describes Performance, Balanced and Quiet modes; it also says the adapter must be capable of supplying the output required for Performance mode. Not every laptop exposes NVIDIA’s notebook power controls, and the manufacturer’s utility may provide its own profiles. Use the adapter specified for the machine rather than guessing at a replacement.

Check whether the game is using the NVIDIA GPU
On Windows 11, you can set a per-game graphics preference when the system has more than one graphics processor:

- Select the game, choose Options, then choose High performance if you want it to use the NVIDIA GPU.
- Save the choice and restart the game before comparing performance.
Microsoft notes that this preference applies when a PC has more than one graphics processor. It requests the high-performance GPU; it does not establish that the game was previously running on the integrated GPU. Microsoft’s Windows graphics instructions explain the setting.

Understand hybrid graphics and MUX options
Many gaming laptops use hybrid graphics: the NVIDIA GPU renders demanding work while the integrated GPU may handle display output or lower-demand tasks. NVIDIA’s Optimus documentation describes automatic graphics selection and notes that behavior can depend on the OEM power plan. A game appearing on the laptop screen is not, by itself, proof of which GPU rendered it.
If your laptop offers a MUX switch or Advanced Optimus control, compare its supported automatic or hybrid mode with discrete-GPU mode while plugged in. Discrete-only operation may improve performance and can enable G-SYNC on supported systems, but it uses more power; integrated graphics can help conserve battery. Availability, menu names and display behavior depend on the specific laptop. Do not assume a MUX control exists or force a mode the manufacturer does not support.

Use the laptop maker’s driver guidance
Find the support page for the exact laptop model and check its certified graphics and platform updates. NVIDIA’s driver listing includes RTX 5070 Laptop GPU support, but directs notebook owners to check with their computer manufacturer for recommended software updates. Start with the OEM’s guidance, and review current release notes for a fix relevant to your game or symptom before changing drivers.

NVIDIA’s driver page listed Game Ready Driver 595.97 as released on March 24, 2026, but that is a dated listing, not a recommendation that this version is right for every laptop or remains current. Check the live NVIDIA driver page and the OEM’s support page when troubleshooting.
Test windowed-game optimization only if it applies
Windows 11’s Optimizations for windowed games feature is intended for DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless mode. Microsoft says the feature can move compatible games to the flip presentation model, which may reduce frame latency and enable features such as Auto HDR and variable refresh rate on supported displays. This is not a universal FPS switch.
If your game and display mode fit that scope, test the setting as a controlled change: use Windows’ per-app graphics options to switch the optimization on or off, restart the game, and compare the same scene. Keep the setting that performs better for your setup. Microsoft documents the feature and its per-app controls in its Windows 11 windowed-game guidance.
Compare changes, then collect evidence if the problem persists
- Repeat the same scene with the same resolution, graphics settings and display mode.
- Change only one supported setting between runs, such as the power profile, GPU preference or applicable windowed-game optimization.
- Compare average FPS and percentile FPS, and note frame pacing alongside utilization, clocks, temperature and power where available.
- Record the change and result so you can reverse a setting that made no improvement.
If the issue remains, useful evidence for the laptop maker or a technician includes the exact manufacturer and model, game, Windows version, driver version, resolution, power profile, GPU and CPU usage and clocks, temperature and power readings, and whether the problem starts immediately or develops over time. A report of “stuttering” alone does not establish overheating or a hardware fault.

What the RTX 5070 Laptop GPU specifications can—and cannot—tell you
NVIDIA lists the RTX 5070 Laptop GPU with 4,608 CUDA cores, a 1,425–2,347 MHz boost-clock range, 8 GB of GDDR7 memory and 384 GB/s of memory bandwidth on its GeForce RTX 50 Series gaming laptops page. These are GPU-family specifications, not a promise of sustained performance or a particular FPS in your laptop. The laptop’s implementation and power limits, cooling, CPU, display and game workload all affect results. Without the exact model and a matching benchmark, those figures cannot predict how many frames your game should deliver.
