Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsLow frame rates and stutter usually have a fixable cause, but the right fix depends on whether the problem affects one game, every game, or Windows itself. Work through the checks in order: establish the scope, inspect CPU, memory and disk activity, update Windows and optional drivers, verify the game is using the intended GPU, test power mode while plugged in, and then compare the result with the laptop’s hardware limits.
The steps below apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11 unless a section is explicitly marked Windows 11. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so a Windows 10 laptop should be treated as an unsupported operating-system platform when you decide whether continued troubleshooting is worthwhile.

First, determine what kind of problem you have
“Low FPS” means the game is rendering fewer frames than you expect. “Stuttering” is uneven delivery: the average frame rate may look acceptable, but individual frames arrive late and the picture briefly hitches. Those symptoms can have different causes, so do not begin by changing every graphics or power setting at once.

Launch a game that normally performs well and compare it with the title that is stuttering. If only one game is affected, the cause may be that game’s configuration, update, files or hardware requirements. If several games are affected, inspect Windows workload, power behavior, GPU selection and drivers first. If ordinary actions such as opening folders or switching windows are also slow, treat the issue as broader system performance rather than a game-only FPS problem.

Did it begin after a change?
Write down whether the symptoms started after a Windows update, graphics-driver update, game patch, newly installed app, or settings change. A clear time relationship does not prove that change is responsible, but it tells you which change to investigate before you make additional ones.
Record a baseline before changing settings
For one repeatable test, note the game, scene or level, display mode, whether the laptop is plugged in, and whether other apps are open. Use the game’s own performance display if it has one, but do not treat a single number as proof of a cause. The purpose is to compare the same workload after each controlled change.
1. Restart and inspect what Windows is doing
A restart clears applications and background work that may have accumulated during a long session. After restarting, reproduce the problem before opening your usual browser tabs, launchers or recording tools. If performance is normal immediately after a restart and degrades later, background activity becomes more likely than a permanent hardware limit.
Recommended Free Tools
Use Task Manager to find an active bottleneck
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- On Processes, inspect the CPU, Memory and Disk columns. Click a column heading to sort it and watch for a process that remains unusually high while the game stutters.
- Open Performance and observe CPU, memory and disk activity while you reproduce the hitch. A short spike is not automatically a fault; look for activity that coincides with the symptom and remains consistently heavy.
- Close only applications and browser tabs you recognize and do not need. Save work first. Do not terminate an unknown Windows process merely because it appears near the top of the list.
- Open Startup apps and review programs that launch with Windows. Disable a startup entry only when you know what it is and do not need it running at sign-in. You can re-enable it later if another application depends on it.
Microsoft’s performance guidance specifically recommends monitoring resource use and closing apps that are not in use. This check can reveal a browser, synchronisation utility, installer or other background task competing with a game, but it cannot by itself identify every GPU, thermal or game-engine problem.
Interpret the observation, not just the highest number
- CPU activity rises when the hitch occurs: identify the process responsible, then close or pause it if it is non-essential. If the game itself is using the CPU heavily, Windows cleanup may not be enough.
- Memory is nearly full: close unneeded programs and tabs, then test again. Avoid deleting or disabling services at random; the observation only establishes memory pressure, not which component should be removed.
- Disk activity stays heavy: allow an update, scan or file operation to finish when possible. Check free space in the next step because low storage can contribute to poor general performance.
- No obvious Windows workload appears: continue to GPU selection, power mode and hardware-limit checks rather than repeatedly closing processes.
2. Install Windows and optional driver updates
Open Windows Update and install available updates, then restart when Windows requests it. Microsoft notes that optional updates can include non-critical drivers that may help a particular system. Treat an optional driver as a compatibility change to test, not as a guaranteed FPS improvement.

Windows 11 path
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install applicable updates.
- Open Advanced options > Optional updates. If driver updates are listed, record their names and install only those appropriate to the laptop.
- Restart, reproduce the same workload, and compare it with your baseline.
Windows 10 qualification
Windows 10 and Windows 11 use different Settings layouts, and labels can vary by release. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; do not assume that a Windows 10 laptop will continue receiving free security or feature updates. If the machine cannot move to a supported Windows release, include that platform limitation in your long-term decision.
Scan for unwanted software when resource use is unexplained
If Task Manager shows unexpected CPU, memory or disk consumption, run a malware scan with the security software already installed on the laptop. First close legitimate work and allow the scan to complete, then restart and test again. A scan is appropriate when activity is unexplained; it is not a reason to disable security protections while gaming.

3. Check storage space and clean it safely
Microsoft identifies low disk space as a possible performance factor. Check the system drive before making driver or power changes. A nearly full drive can also make ordinary Windows operations feel slow, which can be mistaken for game-only stutter.
- In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Storage. In Windows 10, open Settings > System > Storage; the available categories depend on the release.
- Review the drive’s free-space figure and the categories consuming space.
- Open the temporary-file or storage-cleanup controls and read each category before selecting it. Do not remove personal files, saved games or downloads unless you have confirmed they are no longer needed.
- Finish cleanup, restart if Windows requests it, and repeat the same game test.
Storage cleanup is a maintenance step, not a promise of a particular frame-rate increase. If the game remains slow while CPU, memory and disk activity look normal, continue rather than repeatedly deleting files.
4. Make sure the game uses the intended GPU (Windows 11)
A laptop with integrated and discrete graphics can assign different applications to different processors. Windows 11 lets you set a per-app preference. This is especially worth checking when a game appears to be running on a power-saving GPU, but High performance is not guaranteed to improve every system.

- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Find the game in the app list. If it is not listed, use the option to browse for and add the game’s executable file.
- Select the game and choose Options.
- Compare the available choices: Let Windows decide, Power saving and High performance.
- Select High performance when the game needs the laptop’s faster GPU, then choose Save.
- Fully close and restart the game before judging the result. A preference change made while the game is running may not affect that session.
| Windows 11 choice | When it makes sense | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Let Windows decide | Use as the default when you do not know which processor the game needs. | Windows makes the assignment; the result may not match your performance goal. |
| Power saving | Useful when battery life matters more than maximum game performance. | It favors lower power use and may not provide the performance the game requires. |
| High performance | Test for a demanding game on a laptop with multiple GPUs. | It can use more power and does not guarantee higher FPS on every laptop or game. |
Windowed-game optimization
The same Windows 11 Graphics area includes Optimizations for windowed games. Microsoft describes this feature for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-window mode. It can reduce frame latency and enable supported features, but compatibility and the visible effect depend on the game and system. If the title fits those conditions, test the setting, restart the game, and compare the same scene. Do not assume it applies to exclusive full-screen games or every graphics API.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →5. Test power mode while the laptop is plugged in
Windows power mode changes how aggressively the system favors efficiency or performance. Microsoft lists Best power efficiency, Balanced and Best performance. Best performance may let the CPU operate at higher performance when needed, but Microsoft warns that selecting it increases power consumption. On a laptop, that means faster battery drain and potentially more heat.
Windows 11 procedure
- Connect the laptop to its normal charger.
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Under Power mode, select Best performance.
- Close and relaunch the game, then run the same baseline test.
- Return to Balanced or Best power efficiency when you are finished with the performance test or need longer battery life.
On Windows 10, the wording and location vary by release; use the Power options available in Settings or Control Panel and identify the performance-oriented choice before testing. Do not present a Windows 10 label as identical to the Windows 11 menu.
| Power mode | Priority | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Best performance | Maximum responsiveness, with higher power use and possible extra warmth. | The laptop is plugged in and you are testing whether power policy contributes to the problem. |
| Balanced | A compromise between performance and battery life. | You need normal everyday use without deliberately favoring one extreme. |
| Best power efficiency | Lower power consumption. | Battery runtime matters more than peak game performance. |
If changing the mode produces no repeatable difference, restore the mode that fits your battery and heat needs. This setting is a controlled test, not a universal stutter cure.
6. Treat driver and display symptoms separately
Stutter, flicker and scrambled graphics can overlap in a player’s description, but they are not the same diagnostic problem. Microsoft’s flicker guidance offers a useful comparison specifically for flickering: watch whether Task Manager flickers at the same time.

Use the Task Manager flicker comparison only for flicker
- Task Manager flickers too: Microsoft says a display-driver problem is more likely.
- Task Manager does not flicker while the rest of the screen does: an incompatible app is more likely.
This comparison is for flickering symptoms; it is not a universal test for ordinary FPS drops or game stutter.
Choose the driver action that matches the timing
- If flicker began after a driver update, open Device Manager > Display adapters, select the display device, open Properties > Driver, and check whether Roll Back Driver is available.
- If the driver is old or corrupted and an appropriate update is available, use the supported update path for the laptop or Windows Update, then restart.
- If an incompatible app is implicated, update or uninstall that app rather than removing the display driver.
- Test after each single change so you can identify which action affected the symptom.
Do not uninstall a working display driver merely because a game stutters. Driver rollback or removal should follow a display symptom and a plausible timing relationship, not guesswork.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Compare performance with the game and laptop’s limits
After restarting, closing unnecessary workload, updating Windows, checking storage, selecting the GPU and testing power mode, compare the result with the laptop’s hardware and the game’s stated requirements. The evidence collected in these steps can show that Windows is not overloaded, but it cannot make an older processor or graphics processor render beyond its practical capability.
What a hardware-limit pattern looks like
- The same game remains slow after a clean restart and controlled software checks.
- Multiple games show similar limits while ordinary Windows use is otherwise normal.
- Changing GPU preference or power mode does not produce a repeatable improvement.
- The laptop’s model and the game’s requirements indicate that the requested workload exceeds the machine’s capabilities.
These observations support a hardware-capacity diagnosis, not a specific replacement recommendation. Compatibility and need for a RAM kit, SSD, charger, cooling accessory or repair depend on the exact laptop model and fault. The available Microsoft guidance does not establish that any one of those products will solve a particular machine.
When repair or replacement becomes the rational next step
Microsoft states: “Older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from these steps.” If your laptop fits that description and the controlled tests show no meaningful change, stop repeating software tweaks. Check the manufacturer’s support information for the exact model, verify whether memory or storage is replaceable, and obtain a model-specific diagnosis before spending money. A repair decision should account for compatibility, warranty status, power requirements and the age of the laptop rather than a generic FPS promise.
Best Value
Common mistakes that make troubleshooting harder
Changing several settings at once
If you update a driver, change GPU preference, switch power mode and alter game settings in one session, you cannot tell which change mattered. Return to the same scene and change one variable at a time.
Testing on battery and blaming the GPU
Battery operation changes the conditions under which the laptop manages power. Test performance with the charger connected before deciding that a GPU assignment or driver is at fault, then repeat on battery only if battery behavior itself matters to you.
Expecting High performance to fix every game
The Windows 11 per-app option is a preference, not a guarantee. A game may already be using the faster GPU, may be limited by another component, or may not benefit from the setting in its current mode.
Using a flicker test as a stutter test
The Task Manager comparison is tied to screen flickering. A normal Task Manager window does not prove that a game’s frame delivery is healthy, and a flicker diagnosis should not be substituted for the broader FPS checks in this guide.
Deleting files or disabling startup items indiscriminately
Storage cleanup and startup review are useful only when you understand what you are removing or disabling. Keep personal files and required security or hardware utilities, and record any change so it can be reversed.
A practical decision path
- Only one game is affected: reproduce it after a restart, verify the game’s GPU assignment on Windows 11 if applicable, and compare its requirements with the laptop.
- Several games are affected: inspect Task Manager, install Windows and optional driver updates, check storage, and test power mode while plugged in.
- Windows itself is slow: prioritize background workload, malware scanning when activity is unexplained, storage cleanup and the laptop’s age before focusing on one game.
- Flickering or scrambled output is present: use the Task Manager flicker comparison and then choose an update, rollback or app action that matches the result.
- No controlled software change helps: treat the remaining gap as a likely hardware or game-requirement limit and seek model-specific support instead of buying an unverified accessory.
What to document before asking for support
A concise record makes manufacturer or game-support help more useful. Include the laptop model, Windows version, game title and version, whether the issue affects other games, whether it occurs on battery or charger, the date symptoms began, and which single changes you tested. Add the Task Manager observations that coincided with the hitch and whether the Windows 11 GPU preference was changed. This information separates a reproducible software problem from a capacity limit without assuming a cause that has not been measured.
