Low FPS and stuttering in a zoo-management game usually need a diagnosis before a purchase or a major system change. First identify the exact game, your CPU, graphics card, RAM, Windows version, resolution, and whether the problem affects one save, every save, or other games. Then test reversible changes in a controlled order: fullscreen mode, lower graphics settings, a temporary Windows-resolution change, file verification, Windows and graphics-driver checks, and disabled overlays or recording tools.
The published requirements for Planet Zoo provide a useful example, not a universal standard for every zoo simulator. If those checks do not isolate the cause, collect screenshots or video, a DxDiag report, recurrence details, and information about other affected programs before contacting the game’s support team.

Start with a 10-minute baseline
Do not change five settings at once. A repeatable baseline tells you whether a change helped and prevents a temporary improvement from being mistaken for a permanent fix.
- Record the game and scene. Note the title, edition, patch if shown, save file, zoo or map, and the exact action that produces the slowdown. If possible, use the same camera position and activity after every change.
- Record the computer. Write down the processor, graphics card and video-memory amount, installed RAM, Windows version, monitor resolution, and whether the game is installed on an internal or external drive.
- Classify the symptom. Low FPS is a sustained low frame rate. Stuttering is uneven delivery, such as brief freezes or irregular frame pacing even when an FPS counter looks acceptable. “Lag” can also mean an online or simulation delay rather than rendering speed.
- Check the scope. Test another save, a new zoo, another game, and a non-game program. Record whether the issue started after a Windows or graphics-driver update, occurs immediately after launch, or appeared only after a particular zoo became busy.
These observations are more useful than a single utilization percentage. A high CPU or GPU reading can be normal, and a low reading can result from a driver, simulation, storage, heat, or synchronization problem.

Check the exact game’s requirements before changing hardware
Compare your system with the requirements for the specific title and edition. Meeting a minimum requirement does not guarantee a particular FPS, and a requirement list for one game cannot be applied to another.
Planet Zoo as a documented example
Frontier’s PC troubleshooting page and the current Steam listing publish the following Planet Zoo specifications. The Steam listing warns that minimum specifications may change during development. The figures below are specification examples, not measured performance results or a promise of a frame rate.

For context, “8 GB RAM” and “GTX 770 (2GB)” are Frontier/Steam’s published minimum examples, while “16 GB RAM” and “GTX 1070 (8GB)” are their published recommended examples. They do not establish a universal target for zoo-management games, nor do they show how a particular zoo, resolution, or graphics preset will perform.
If your PC is below the game’s minimum, lower settings may reduce load but cannot make unsupported hardware equivalent to the recommended configuration. If it meets or exceeds the requirements, continue with the software and system checks rather than assuming that buying a new GPU is the answer.
Apply reversible display and graphics changes
Make one change, reproduce the same scene, and note the result. Restore a setting if it makes image quality or input feel worse.

1. Try fullscreen mode
Use the game’s display menu to select fullscreen rather than windowed or borderless mode. Frontier states: “Running the game full-screen may result in improved performance.” The wording matters: fullscreen is a possibility, not a guaranteed fix. The statement appears in Frontier’s Planet Zoo PC troubleshooting article dated 17 March 2026.
2. Lower the game’s graphics quality
Reduce the preset or individual options in the in-game graphics menu. Start with the options that affect rendering workload, then compare the same camera view. Keep a note of each change so you can restore image quality after identifying the limiting setting.
3. Temporarily lower Windows resolution
As a diagnostic, lower the Windows display resolution, launch the game, and test the same scene. Restore the original Windows resolution afterward. This is a short controlled test, not a recommendation to use a permanently blurry desktop. If the test changes nothing, resolution is less likely to be the main cause.
4. Separate frame-rate and frame-pacing results
If lowering graphics quality raises FPS but stutter remains, the rendering load was only part of the problem. If FPS changes little but the pauses disappear after an overlay is disabled, investigate software hooks instead. If the slowdown occurs in one save while a new game is smooth, preserve that distinction for support; do not assume every simulation is affected in the same way.
Verify files, Windows, and the graphics driver
Verify the installation
For a Steam installation, open the game’s Properties, choose Installed Files (the label can vary by Steam version), and run Verify integrity of game files. Let the process finish, then restart Steam and retest the same scene. Verification can replace damaged or incomplete files; it does not upgrade hardware or guarantee a frame-rate increase.

Install pending Windows updates
Use Settings › Windows Update and install available updates according to your normal maintenance policy. Restart before testing. Record whether the issue began immediately after a Windows update; timing helps support distinguish a system change from a save-specific problem.

Check the driver supplied for your exact graphics card and Windows version. Frontier recommends keeping drivers current, but also notes that if the problem began with a newer driver, a clean reinstall or a return to a previously working version may be worth trying. Do not treat “always install the newest driver” as a universal rule.
- Write down the current driver version before changing it.
- Use the graphics manufacturer’s official installer and select its clean-install option when available.
- If the issue clearly follows one driver release, use the manufacturer’s supported rollback route to a known-good version.
- Retest without changing graphics settings at the same time.
Disable overlays and background capture one at a time
Overlays and recording programs can consume resources or conflict with a game. Turn off one feature, reproduce the problem, and then decide whether to leave it disabled. Frontier specifically names Steam, Xbox, Discord, and GeForce overlays, plus recording or monitoring tools such as OBS, FRAPS, Xsplit, Overwolf, MSI Afterburner, ShadowPlay, and Xbox Game DVR.
- Disable the Steam overlay for the game and test.
- Disable Xbox Game Bar or background capture in Windows and test.
- Disable Discord’s in-game overlay and test.
- Disable the graphics driver’s overlay and recording feature and test.
- Close other capture, streaming, hardware-monitoring, or overlay utilities before the final comparison.
Do not conclude that an overlay is responsible simply because the game feels different after a restart. Reproduce the same scene with the same resolution and graphics settings, and write down the result.
Check heat and physical installation carefully
Overheating concerns
Frontier says overheating can cause a computer to fail or operate poorly and advises having a qualified technician inspect a machine showing signs of overheating. Warning signs can include sudden performance collapse after the system warms up, unexpected shutdowns, fan behavior that changes sharply under load, or instability in more than one demanding program. The support guidance does not establish a universal temperature threshold, so do not diagnose overheating from a single number.

Keep vents unobstructed, make sure fans can move air, and use the computer manufacturer’s maintenance guidance. Do not open a powered computer or dismantle cooling hardware unless you are qualified to do so.
Graphics-card seating and slot checks
Frontier’s Planet Zoo guidance also discusses checking whether a graphics card is correctly seated in an appropriate PCI Express slot, particularly for high-end cards. This is a system-specific hardware check, not a routine first step for every stutter. If you are unsure which slot or retention mechanism your motherboard uses, consult the PC or motherboard documentation or a technician. Power the system down and follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions before any internal inspection.

If the slowdown is specifically in Planet Zoo’s Animal Trading Centre, Frontier says it may improve when Steam Beta participation is disabled. The explanation given is that the feature uses Steam Client Web Helper, which is also used by the Beta client.
- Open Steam’s account or client settings where Beta participation is managed.
- Disable participation in the Steam Beta client.
- Restart Steam and Planet Zoo, then test the Animal Trading Centre again.
This is a narrow Planet Zoo troubleshooting step. It is not a general FPS remedy for other zoo games, other Planet Zoo scenes, or unrelated stuttering.

There is no authoritative universal FPS target in the cited material, and the available sources do not prove that zoo size or guest count always determines frame rate. Treat those as hypotheses to test in your particular game, not as rules.
Escalate with evidence instead of guessing
When reversible checks fail, contact the game’s publisher or platform support with a concise diagnostic package. For Planet Zoo, Frontier asks players to provide supporting documents, screenshots or footage, DxDiag, and details about what was happening, whether the problem repeats, and whether other software or games have crashed. Use the publisher’s Planet Zoo PC troubleshooting guidance and, when appropriate, Steam’s Planet Zoo technical-issue form.
Include these details
- Exact game name, edition, platform, and version or build if shown.
- CPU, GPU, graphics-memory amount, installed RAM, Windows version, monitor resolution, and storage location.
- Whether the issue affects one save or all saves, one scene or every scene, and whether it happens immediately after launch.
- The date or event after which it began, such as a driver or Windows update.
- Which graphics, fullscreen, resolution, file-verification, overlay, and capture tests you performed, with the result of each.
- A DxDiag report, screenshots, or a short recording that shows the symptom without exposing unnecessary personal information.
- Whether another game or program shows the same behavior, crashes, or becomes unstable.
If the game offers an in-game crash-report submission, send it when the crash occurs and reference the report in your support request. Avoid deleting the affected save until support tells you it is safe; the save-specific pattern may be the most useful clue.
When a hardware purchase is—and is not—justified
A purchase becomes a reasoned option only after you identify the exact game, compare its current requirements with your complete system, and show that reversible software and configuration checks do not resolve the problem. Even then, choose a part that is compatible with the motherboard, power supply, case, cooling, operating system, and the game’s requirements. More RAM or a faster GPU may help a particular bottleneck, but the supplied evidence does not support naming one universal upgrade for zoo-management games.

Preserve your baseline and diagnostic notes so a technician or support agent can make a compatibility decision from evidence.
