How to Fix Low FPS and Stuttering in a Fast-Paced Horror Shooter

Start by measuring the problem, then change one variable at a time. Record average FPS, 1% lows, frame-time consistency, GPU and CPU utilization, clocks, temperatures and power while repeating the same scene. Compare the exact game’s official requirements with your PC, reduce demanding graphics settings methodically, verify Windows 11 is using the intended GPU, and investigate storage only when pauses coincide with loading or asset streaming. These steps separate consistently low performance from intermittent stutter without assuming a game-specific cause.

Low FPS and stuttering are different problems

Low average FPS means the computer is not producing frames quickly enough over an extended period. Stuttering is an inconsistency problem: the average may look acceptable while individual frames arrive late, producing a hitch, freeze or uneven camera movement. A fast-paced horror shooter makes both symptoms obvious because rapid turns and sudden events expose irregular frame delivery.

Measure both conditions before changing anything. NVIDIA FrameView can report average FPS, 1% low FPS, latency, CPU and GPU clocks, utilization, temperatures and power. It is a measurement option, not a required purchase. If you use another overlay, record equivalent information and keep the capture method the same for every comparison.

What you notice What to measure How to interpret the result First useful check
The game is always slow Average FPS during a repeatable scene The rendering workload or the PC’s capability may be insufficient for the selected resolution and settings. Compare the PC with the exact game’s official requirements, then reduce one demanding setting.
Brief hitches or freezes 1% lows and frame-time consistency A reasonable average can hide delayed frames; the cause still needs testing rather than being inferred from the average alone. Repeat the same event and inspect system telemetry while testing one change.
Performance collapses during a particular effect or area FPS, 1% lows, utilization and clocks at that moment The scene may request more work than the current settings or hardware can sustain. Lower a single demanding graphics option and retest the identical scene.
Pauses occur while entering areas or loading assets Timing of the pause and the drive containing the game Storage or asset streaming is a plausible line of investigation, but it is not proof that storage causes every stutter. Check whether the game is on an HDD or SSD and whether capacity and interface are suitable.

Do not treat a single number as a verdict. A higher average with worse 1% lows can feel less responsive than a lower average that is steady. Keep the scene, resolution, display mode and overlay consistent so that a change in the measurements has a meaningful comparison.

Establish a repeatable baseline

Before touching a setting, write down enough information for another person to reproduce the symptom. The exact game and platform matter: requirements, patches and rendering behavior differ, even among games in the same horror-shooter genre.

  • Game name, distribution platform and the game version shown by its launcher.
  • Operating system and, if it is Windows, whether the PC is running Windows 11.
  • CPU model, GPU model, installed memory and whether the system has more than one GPU.
  • Display resolution, refresh rate, windowed, borderless or exclusive-full-screen mode, and any in-game frame limit.
  • Every current graphics setting that affects image quality or synchronization.
  • Where the problem appears: a repeatable room, combat encounter, camera turn, loading transition or online event.
  • Average FPS, 1% low FPS and the telemetry available from the overlay.

Use the same test scene

  1. Choose a typical scene that reliably shows the problem. If the hitch happens during a specific transition, record that transition separately from ordinary gameplay.
  2. Restart the game and reach the scene in the same way for each trial. Do not compare a quiet corridor with a combat encounter.
  3. Run the scene long enough to capture the normal average and any repeatable dip. Note whether the result changes after a second pass.
  4. Change exactly one setting or Windows option, restart the game when instructed, and repeat the same route.
  5. Keep a log of the setting, average FPS, 1% lows, visible frame-time behavior and image-quality trade-off.

This process distinguishes a persistent limitation from an occasional event. It also prevents a group of simultaneous changes from hiding which one helped or hurt.

Check the exact game’s official requirements

Find the official minimum and recommended requirements on the game’s own support page or distribution platform. MSI’s general performance guidance recommends this check before deciding that new hardware is necessary. Do not infer requirements from the game’s genre or from another shooter.

Comparison What it can tell you What it cannot prove
Your CPU, GPU and memory are below the listed minimum The PC may not be capable of the game’s intended workload at the selected settings. It does not identify a single failing component or rule out a configuration problem.
Your hardware meets the minimum but not the recommended tier Lower settings or resolution may be necessary for a consistent experience. It does not establish that every stutter is expected.
Your hardware meets or exceeds the listed recommendation Continue measuring settings, GPU selection, display mode and the timing of the hitch. It does not guarantee a particular FPS, frame-time pattern or absence of game-specific bugs.

Requirements are tied to the exact game and its supported configuration. If the official page lists a specific operating-system version, API or storage expectation, compare those items as well. If the game has a current support page, use it for game-specific repair instructions rather than applying a fix from a different title.

Reduce the graphics workload one setting at a time

Graphics options change how much work the PC must render, but the largest effects vary by game. Riot’s support guidance describes settings as requests for different amounts of detail and recommends testing the options that have the greatest impact for the particular game. There is no universal “best” preset for every fast-paced horror shooter.

  1. Begin with the current baseline and select one demanding option to lower. Use the game’s own labels; do not change a group of settings through a preset if you are trying to identify a cause.
  2. Apply the change, replay the same scene and record average FPS, 1% lows and frame consistency.
  3. Keep the change only if it improves the observed problem enough to justify its image-quality cost. If it does not, restore it before testing the next option.
  4. Repeat with the next most demanding option. Stop when consistency is acceptable or when further reductions make the game unpleasant to view.
Setting category to test What to compare Trade-off to record
Output resolution or render scale Average FPS and 1% lows in the same camera path Lower resolution can improve consistency while making the image softer.
Scene-detail, lighting or shadow quality Frame-time behavior during the effect that triggers the dip Lower detail may remove visual depth or shadow definition.
Effects, post-processing or volumetric detail Performance during smoke, darkness, weather or other heavy effects The scene may look flatter or less atmospheric.
Texture quality Stutter behavior and memory-related telemetry, if available Lower textures reduce visual detail; the benefit depends on the game and available memory.

These categories are examples, not a prescription for a particular title. The game’s own settings menu and support documentation determine which option is actually expensive. A change that raises average FPS but leaves 1% lows and frame pacing unchanged has not solved a stutter problem.

Test VSync as a display-behavior option

VSync synchronizes frame presentation with the display refresh cycle and may prevent visible tearing. Test it separately from performance settings. It can change how frames are presented, but it is not a universal FPS boost and should not be credited with fixing every hitch. Compare the same scene with VSync enabled and disabled, and note tearing, input feel, average FPS and 1% lows.

Verify the GPU selected by Windows 11

These directions are conditional on Windows 11. They matter on systems with more than one GPU, such as a laptop with integrated and discrete graphics. Windows provides a per-app graphics preference that can assign the game to the high-performance GPU.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Choose System, then Display, then Graphics.
  3. Find the game in the app list. If it is not listed, use the option to add its executable.
  4. Open the game’s graphics preference and select High performance when that is the intended GPU.
  5. Save the preference and restart the game before measuring again.

Only use the high-performance choice when the PC’s hardware and power behavior make it appropriate. The setting does not repair a game that is already using the intended GPU, and it does not replace testing the game’s workload. Confirm the result with the telemetry available from your overlay rather than assuming the selection changed.

Use Windows 11 windowed-game optimizations only when they apply

Windows 11 includes Optimizations for windowed games for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless modes. Microsoft describes the feature as moving compatible games to a newer presentation model intended to reduce frame latency. It is not a universal fix, and it does not apply automatically to every API or display mode.

  1. Open Settings and go to System, Display, then Graphics.
  2. Locate the game and open its graphics options.
  3. Enable Optimizations for windowed games if the game uses DirectX 10 or DirectX 11 and runs windowed or borderless.
  4. Restart the game, then repeat the baseline scene and compare frame pacing, 1% lows and latency indicators.

If the game uses another graphics API, or if you play in a mode outside the supported windowed and borderless cases, leave this option out of the diagnosis. Do not claim success merely because the toggle exists; the result must be visible in the repeated measurement.

Investigate storage only when the symptom points there

Storage is a narrow, conditional branch. If pauses occur while loading a level or streaming assets, check the drive that contains the game and whether the timing of the pause follows those operations. Compare the game’s location, available capacity and interface compatibility before buying anything.

Observation Storage check Appropriate conclusion
Hitches are tied to loading screens or asset entry Identify whether the game is on an HDD or SSD and inspect available capacity. Storage is a plausible contributor worth testing.
Stutter occurs randomly during ordinary play with no loading relationship Continue with frame-time, graphics and GPU-selection tests. There is not enough evidence to treat an SSD as the fix.
The game is already on an SSD Check capacity, interface compatibility and whether the same pause is reproducible. Changing storage may not address the observed behavior.

MSI states that storing games on an SSD usually improves the gaming experience and may increase FPS in some demanding AAA games. That statement does not establish that an SSD fixes general low FPS or frame-time stutter in every shooter. Treat an SSD as a targeted option when your measurements show a storage-related pattern, not as a default upgrade.

Follow the symptom to the next test

Average FPS is consistently low

First compare the PC with the exact game’s official requirements. Then lower one demanding graphics setting, replay the same scene and check whether both average FPS and 1% lows improve. If the change helps, decide whether another setting or a lower output resolution provides a better balance than reducing image quality everywhere.

Average FPS looks acceptable but movement hitches

Focus on 1% lows and frame-time consistency rather than chasing a higher average. Capture telemetry during the repeatable hitch, then test one graphics option. If the game is windowed or borderless on Windows 11 and uses DirectX 10 or 11, test the applicable windowed-game optimization and restart before comparing.

The problem appears only in borderless or windowed mode

Record the display mode as part of the baseline. On Windows 11, use the supported windowed-game optimization path only for compatible DirectX 10 and 11 games, then restart. Compare the same scene with the same resolution and synchronization setting; otherwise, the mode change is mixed with several variables.

Pauses happen during loading or entering a new area

Record the exact transition and check the drive containing the game. If it is on an HDD, an SSD may be worth evaluating for this loading-related symptom. Do not generalize that result to ordinary gameplay stutter without a separate measurement.

Changing settings has no measurable effect

Confirm that the game restarted when a Windows change required it, verify that the selected GPU is the one being used, and recheck the official requirements. If the symptom still cannot be reproduced consistently, provide the game name, PC specifications, operating system, display mode, settings and telemetry to the game’s official support channel.

Keep a change log so the result is trustworthy

A short log prevents circular troubleshooting and makes trade-offs explicit. Record one row per trial rather than relying on memory.

Use the numbers to choose the least disruptive change that improves the symptom. If two options produce similar measurements, prefer the one that preserves image quality and input behavior.

Mistakes that make stutter diagnosis harder

  • Changing a complete preset: You lose the ability to identify which option affected performance.
  • Copying settings from another game: The most demanding options vary by title, renderer and scene.
  • Judging only the average FPS: Averages can hide the 1% lows and uneven frame delivery that cause visible hitches.
  • Skipping the official requirements: Genre or visual similarity does not establish the target hardware.
  • Ignoring display mode: Windowed, borderless and other modes can change which Windows 11 optimization is applicable.
  • Forgetting to restart: Windows GPU-preference and windowed-optimization changes should be tested after restarting the game.
  • Buying storage without a storage symptom: An SSD can help loading and may help FPS in some demanding games, but it is not evidence-based as a universal stutter cure.

When you need game-specific help

The exact game, patch, hardware, operating system and symptom pattern determine the next step. If this process does not isolate a change, contact the game’s official support information with a concise reproduction report:

  • Exact game title, platform and version.
  • CPU, GPU, memory, operating system and display resolution and refresh rate.
  • Windowed, borderless or full-screen mode, VSync state and relevant graphics settings.
  • The scene or action that triggers the low FPS, FPS drop or micro-stutter.
  • Baseline and comparison values for average FPS, 1% lows and any available latency, utilization, clock, temperature and power telemetry.
  • Whether the game is installed on an HDD or SSD and whether the pause coincides with loading or asset streaming.
  • Which single changes were tested and whether the game was restarted afterward.

This information lets support staff distinguish a rendering workload from a presentation, GPU-selection or loading-related symptom without guessing at a game-specific fix.
