How to Fix Logitech K400 Plus Driver and Connection Issues

If a Logitech K400 Plus stops typing, is not detected, or repeatedly disconnects, the fault is often not a missing keyboard driver. The keyboard communicates through its Logitech Unifying USB receiver, so receiver recognition, lost pairing, weak batteries, USB-port problems, radio interference, and physical obstructions can all look like a driver failure. Start with fresh batteries and a direct USB connection, then check Device Manager, test another port and computer, and re-pair the keyboard if Windows can see the receiver but not the keyboard.

What the K400 Plus driver problem usually means

The K400 Plus is a wireless keyboard and touchpad system. Its small USB dongle is a Logitech Unifying receiver: the receiver connects to the computer, and the keyboard communicates with that receiver over radio. Windows therefore has to recognize the USB receiver before any key press can reach the operating system.

That architecture creates several different failure patterns:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The keyboard has no response because its two AA batteries are depleted or the power switch is off.
  • The receiver is not being recognized by the USB port, a hub, a KVM switch, or the computer’s USB subsystem.
  • The receiver is recognized, but the keyboard has lost its pairing with it.
  • The connection is present but unstable because the receiver is too far away, blocked by metal, or affected by radio-frequency interference.
  • The receiver itself has failed. If it fails on multiple ports and another computer, a receiver fault is more likely than a keyboard-driver fault.

These distinctions matter because reinstalling software cannot repair a dead receiver, and replacing a keyboard will not help if the computer cannot see the dongle.

Fast symptom-to-action guide

What you observe Most useful first action What the result tells you
No lights or no response at all Install two fresh AA alkaline batteries, switch the keyboard off and on, and inspect the battery compartment. If the keyboard wakes up, the issue was power-related. If it remains completely unresponsive, continue with receiver and hardware checks.
The receiver does not appear in Device Manager Connect it directly to the computer, try another USB port, then test it on another computer. A failure on every port and computer points toward the receiver; a port-specific failure points toward USB hardware or its chipset driver.
The receiver is visible, but the keyboard is not connected Run the Logitech Unifying pairing procedure and power-cycle the keyboard when prompted. A successful test-box entry confirms that pairing, rather than USB recognition, was the problem.
Typing works only intermittently Move the receiver closer, remove metal obstructions, bypass hubs and KVM switches, and reduce nearby wireless interference. If stability returns, the radio path or USB arrangement was responsible.
The receiver fails on another computer too Check the orange Unifying logo and consider a compatible Logitech Unifying replacement receiver. The receiver is the most likely failed component, rather than a Windows keyboard driver.

Step 1: Restore power and remove physical causes

Replace both batteries

The K400 quick-start guide specifies two AA alkaline batteries. Replace both at the same time with fresh cells; do not mix a new cell with a partly used one. Confirm that each battery is oriented according to the markings in the compartment and that the contacts are clean. Turn the keyboard off, wait a few seconds, and turn it back on.

A battery that still powers the keyboard can nevertheless produce an unreliable radio connection as its voltage falls. If the keyboard starts working after replacement, keep the old cells out of the device and retest before changing any Windows settings.

Check the switch and receiver seating

Slide the keyboard’s power switch fully off and then on again. Remove and reinsert the receiver so it is firmly seated. The receiver should be plugged directly into an available USB-A port on the computer, not into a USB hub, monitor port, docking chain, or KVM switch. Hubs and KVMs can interrupt power or fail to pass the receiver’s USB identification correctly.

Improve the radio path

Remove metallic objects between the keyboard and receiver, including a metal computer case edge, a filing cabinet, or a metal-backed monitor stand. Move the receiver closer to the keyboard when possible; a short USB extension can place the dongle on the desk instead of behind the computer. Logitech lists wireless speakers, monitors, phones, and other equipment as possible sources of radio-frequency interference. Temporarily move those devices or switch them off while testing.

Step 2: Confirm that Windows recognizes the receiver

Open Device Manager

  1. Press Win+X and choose Device Manager.
  2. Expand Universal Serial Bus controllers. Also inspect Human Interface Devices and Keyboards for a newly appearing or disappearing entry when you unplug and reconnect the receiver.
  3. Look for an unknown USB device, a warning icon, or any entry that changes when the receiver is connected.

The exact name can vary by Windows version and computer manufacturer, so the important observation is whether the USB system reacts to the receiver at all. If nothing changes, continue with a direct-port and second-computer test rather than repeatedly reinstalling keyboard software.

Try a different USB port

Unplug the receiver and connect it directly to another port on the same computer. If one port works and another does not, the receiver may be fine while the original port, hub path, or USB controller has a problem. On a desktop, test a port on the back of the motherboard as well as a front-panel port. On a laptop, test each available port without a dock.

If changing ports changes the result, Logitech recommends considering an update to the motherboard or computer maker’s USB chipset driver. Obtain that driver from the PC or motherboard manufacturer’s support page for the exact model and Windows edition. Do not install a chipset package intended for a different model.

Test the receiver on another computer

Connect the receiver directly to another Windows computer, then wait for Windows to enumerate it. You are testing the receiver independently of the first computer’s USB ports, chipset, and software configuration.

  • If the receiver is recognized on the second computer, focus on the first computer’s USB port, chipset driver, hub, KVM, or Windows configuration.
  • If it is not recognized on the second computer either, Logitech says the fault is most likely related to the USB receiver rather than the keyboard or mouse.
  • If the receiver is recognized but the keyboard still does not type, proceed to re-pairing; recognition alone does not prove that the keyboard remains paired.

Step 3: Re-pair a recognized receiver and keyboard

Use this procedure when the receiver appears to work but the K400 Plus is not connected. Logitech’s documented workflow uses Logitech Unifying Software. The Windows and Macintosh screens differ, but the power-cycle and confirmation sequence is the same.

  1. Install or open Logitech Unifying Software from a source that still provides it for your operating system. Logitech states that Unifying Software is no longer maintained, so verify current support and compatibility before installing an old package.
  2. Insert the receiver directly into the computer and launch the software.
  3. Click Next when the setup window appears.
  4. When prompted, turn the K400 Plus off and then back on.
  5. Type a few characters in the test box. This confirms that the software can receive input from this keyboard.
  6. Select Yes when the test succeeds, then choose Finish.

If the test box never receives characters, repeat the battery, distance, and interference checks before assuming that pairing failed. Also verify that you are pairing with the intended receiver; a Unifying receiver can support up to six compatible devices, so it may already contain other pairings.

Step 4: Understand Logitech’s current software position

Unifying Software and SetPoint

Logitech support notices say that both Unifying Software and SetPoint are no longer supported or maintained. They may still be relevant to an older K400 Plus setup, but their availability and compatibility can change with Windows updates. Do not treat an old installer as a guaranteed solution, and avoid downloading packages from unofficial mirrors.

Logi Options+

Logitech’s newer Unifying setup page directs users toward Logi Options+ for supported devices and describes an Add Devices > Unifying Receiver pairing flow. Treat this as a current option only after checking whether the specific K400 Plus and your operating-system version are supported. Logitech’s current application does not automatically replace every legacy K400 feature, and an unsupported device may not appear in its setup screens.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

For a Windows 11 computer, begin with receiver recognition, batteries, USB ports, and pairing. There is no reason to keep searching for a special K400 Plus driver if Windows cannot see the receiver; solve the USB-recognition problem first. If the receiver is recognized, use only a Logitech pairing utility that explicitly supports your device and operating system.

Step 5: Diagnose intermittent disconnections

An intermittent connection usually indicates a marginal power, USB, or radio path rather than a permanently missing driver. Work through these changes one at a time so you can identify the cause:

  1. Install fresh AA batteries and power-cycle the keyboard.
  2. Move the receiver from a rear-panel or monitor port to a direct port with a clearer line of sight.
  3. Remove any hub, KVM, dock, or extension that is not needed for the test.
  4. Move wireless speakers, phones, and other radio devices away temporarily.
  5. Remove metal objects between the receiver and keyboard.
  6. Try another USB port and observe whether the disconnects follow the port.

If the problem follows one port, investigate that computer’s USB hardware and chipset driver. If it follows the receiver to every port and another computer, hardware replacement is more practical than further driver reinstalls.

Step 6: Decide whether the receiver or keyboard has failed

When the receiver is the likely fault

A receiver that is not recognized on multiple direct USB ports and a second computer is the strongest indicator of receiver failure. Logitech’s troubleshooting guidance explicitly says that, when the product remains unrecognized, the fault is most likely related to the USB receiver rather than the keyboard or mouse.

Before buying anything, inspect the dongle for bent metal, cracks, corrosion, or a loose USB shell. Confirm that the orange Unifying logo is present. A Logitech Logi Bolt receiver is a different system and is not a substitute simply because it is also wireless.

When the keyboard is more likely at fault

If a receiver is recognized and can pair with another compatible device but the K400 Plus never responds after fresh batteries, a clean power cycle, and the documented pairing workflow, the keyboard’s switch, radio, or internal electronics may be defective. A second compatible Unifying device can help isolate this: if that device works through the receiver while the K400 Plus does not, the keyboard becomes the stronger suspect.

Do not discard the keyboard solely because one computer cannot detect it. Complete the second-computer receiver test first; it prevents replacing a working keyboard for a USB or dongle problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Replacing a failed or lost receiver

The relevant replacement is a compatible Logitech Unifying USB receiver. Match the orange Unifying logo and confirm compatibility with the K400 Plus before ordering. Do not assume that every Logitech wireless dongle is interchangeable: Unifying and Logi Bolt receivers use different systems.

After obtaining a compatible receiver, connect it directly to the computer and run the supported Logitech pairing workflow. You may need to pair the keyboard again even if the replacement receiver looks identical to the original. The 2011 Logitech guide states that one Unifying receiver can connect up to six compatible devices, so a replacement can be useful when several supported devices share one receiver; pairing capacity does not make an incompatible receiver work.

If the original receiver still works intermittently, keep it as a diagnostic reference until the replacement has been paired and tested. If the new receiver is not recognized either, return to the USB-port and second-computer checks rather than assuming both receivers are defective.

A complete Windows troubleshooting order

  1. Switch the K400 Plus off, install two fresh AA alkaline batteries, and switch it on again.
  2. Remove metal obstructions and move nearby wireless speakers, monitors, phones, and other sources of interference.
  3. Unplug the Unifying receiver from any hub, KVM, dock, or monitor and connect it directly to a USB-A port.
  4. Open Device Manager and check whether Windows reacts when the receiver is removed and reinserted.
  5. Try another direct USB port. If only one port works, investigate that port and the computer’s USB chipset driver.
  6. Test the receiver on another computer.
  7. If the receiver is recognized but the keyboard is not connected, run Logitech Unifying Software’s Next, power-cycle, test-box, Yes, and Finish sequence.
  8. Check Logitech’s current support information before using legacy Unifying Software or SetPoint, and check whether Logi Options+ supports the exact K400 Plus and operating-system version.
  9. If the receiver fails on every port and computer, verify the orange Unifying logo and consider a compatible replacement receiver.
  10. If a recognized receiver still will not pair with a powered K400 Plus after these steps, the keyboard itself may need repair or replacement.

What not to do

  • Do not start by installing random “K400 drivers” from third-party download sites.
  • Do not confuse a receiver-recognition failure with a lost pairing; they require different fixes.
  • Do not test through a hub or KVM and then conclude that the receiver is dead.
  • Do not buy a Logi Bolt receiver when the keyboard requires a Unifying receiver.
  • Do not repeatedly reinstall obsolete Logitech utilities without checking whether your Windows edition and K400 Plus revision are supported.

As an optional shortcut for the driver-side checks, Outbyte Driver Updater scans more than 100 devices, identifies outdated, corrupted, or missing drivers, installs official drivers, displays current and recommended versions, and provides driver backup, restore, and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7 and includes a two-day free trial with no credit card before a subscription is required; results vary, and no utility can repair every receiver or keyboard hardware fault.
