How to Fix Linked Images Not Displaying in Outlook

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If Outlook shows a “Download Pictures” notice or a blocked-images banner, the message’s internet-hosted images are being held back by a privacy setting. Use the download control for that message, or adjust the setting for your Outlook app if you want images to appear more often. The steps differ between classic Outlook for Windows, Outlook for Mac, and Outlook for iOS or Android. First check whether the image is linked online: these settings do not control images embedded in the message or attached to it.

First identify the kind of image and the Outlook app

Outlook treats images stored on the internet differently from images included in the message itself. A linked image loads from a remote address when the message is displayed. That request can reveal that the message was opened, including when the remote image is a tracking pixel. Blocking remote pictures is therefore an intentional privacy control, not proof that Outlook or your computer is broken. Microsoft says, “Blocking pictures can help protect your computer.”

  • Linked image: Often appears as a blocked-picture notice or a banner offering to download images. Use the instructions for your Outlook app below.
  • Embedded or attached image: The image is part of the email rather than loaded from a website. Outlook’s external-image settings do not control these images; on mobile, the setting applies to the reading pane and does not block images embedded as attachments.

Menu instructions vary by client. The Windows Trust Center steps below are for classic Outlook, not a general procedure for new Outlook or Outlook on the web. Microsoft’s guidance cited here covers classic Outlook for Microsoft 365, Outlook 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016; Outlook for Mac for Microsoft 365, 2024, and 2021; and Outlook mobile.

Download linked images in classic Outlook for Windows

Show pictures in one trusted message

  1. Open or preview the message.
  2. In the InfoBar, select Download Pictures.
  3. If you opened the message in its own window and want the pictures to show the next time, save the message. When you download pictures while viewing a message in the Reading Pane, Outlook saves the message automatically.

Only download images when you trust the message and its sender. The request for a remote image can tell its host that the message was opened.

Allow images from a sender or domain

For a source you trust and want to allow again, right-click a blocked picture and choose Add Sender to Safe Senders List or Add the Domain @domain to Safe Senders List. This is a narrower choice than permitting automatic downloads from every message.

Review the broader automatic-download controls

In classic Outlook, open File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings and review the automatic-download options. Clearing Don’t download pictures automatically in HTML e-mail messages or RSS items allows broader automatic downloads; other controls may apply to particular types of content.

A broad change is more convenient, but it reduces protection against remote tracking and can download pictures from messages you have not individually approved. Prefer a per-message choice or safe-sender rule if that meets your needs. If the control is missing or unavailable on a managed work account, ask your administrator whether policy restricts it.

Change external-image behavior in Outlook for Mac

  1. Open Outlook > Settings > Email > Reading.
  2. Under Download external images, choose the behavior that suits you:
  • Ask before downloading: Decide message by message.
  • My contacts, organisation(s) and safe senders: Allow a defined group while keeping a prompt or block for other sources.
  • Always: Favor convenience and load external images automatically.

This preference concerns pictures stored on the internet. It does not control pictures attached to or embedded in the message body. Because automatically loading remote images can disclose message activity, choose the broadest option only if that trade-off is acceptable to you.

Download images in Outlook for iOS or Android

If Block external images is enabled, open the message and tap the banner above it to download linked pictures. The option provides additional privacy protection against tracking through web beacons. Microsoft notes that an IT administrator may have enabled the setting.

If you cannot change the setting, or it switches back after you change it, contact your organization’s IT administrator rather than trying to bypass a managed policy. The mobile setting does not block images embedded in the email as attachments and applies to the reading pane.

When replying to or forwarding a message, internet-linked images may not appear if you did not choose to display them before replying or forwarding. If the missing image matters to the reply, return to the original message and display its images first.

If pictures are missing only in signed or encrypted messages

If the problem occurs specifically with S/MIME signed or encrypted messages in Outlook for Windows, Microsoft documents a default restriction on external content. A Trust Center automatic-download option exists, but an organization can prevent users from overriding it. If the control is locked, or workplace security policy applies to the message, contact your IT administrator.

Choose a setting that fits your privacy needs

Choice Convenience Privacy trade-off Best fit
Approve per message or ask before downloading Images require an extra action More control over when remote requests are made You want to inspect each message before loading its images
Allow contacts, an organization, or safe senders Trusted sources load with less friction Remote requests from allowed sources can still signal activity You regularly receive mail from a known group
Always download or broadly allow automatic downloads Most convenient More messages can make remote requests, including tracking-pixel requests You prioritize automatic display over limiting remote requests

The available choices vary by Outlook client. Mac lists the choices above under Download external images; classic Windows provides hierarchical automatic-download controls in the Trust Center.

Diagnose messages that still do not show pictures

  1. Confirm the app. Identify whether you are using classic Outlook for Windows, Outlook for Mac, or Outlook mobile before following a settings path. Do not apply classic Outlook’s Trust Center steps to new Outlook or Outlook on the web.
  2. Look for a blocked-images notice. If one appears, use the client-specific download action for a message you trust.
  3. Check whether the image is remote. External-image preferences affect linked content. An embedded or attached image points to a different issue.
  4. Decide whether this is a one-time or recurring need. Use per-message approval, trusted contacts/senders, or a broader automatic-download preference according to your privacy and convenience trade-off.
  5. Check for organization controls. A locked setting, managed mobile policy, or problem limited to S/MIME messages may require help from IT.
  6. If there is no blocked-image notice and only particular messages fail, ask the sender or administrator to check that the image address is valid and reachable. This is a general diagnostic possibility, not a cause established by the cited Microsoft guidance.

Outlook web and new Outlook for Windows

The Microsoft procedures covered here establish steps for classic Outlook for Windows, Outlook for Mac, and Outlook mobile; they do not establish a complete image-download procedure for Outlook on the web or new Outlook for Windows. Do not assume the classic Windows Trust Center path applies to those clients. Check the current controls in your specific client or consult your organization’s administrator. Guidance about disabled links in new Outlook is not, by itself, a complete guide to showing linked images.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not an Outlook image-download setting, so it will not unblock pictures inside an email. If your separate task is capturing a public webpage as an image or PDF, its one-call API can return a clean screenshot. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot of stripe.com:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. ScreenshotNeo accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. See ScreenshotNeo for the service. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do images show in one Outlook app but not another?

The clients have separate external-image controls, so a setting in one Outlook app does not establish the behavior of another.

Can I make Outlook display every linked image without approving it?

Classic Outlook for Windows and Outlook for Mac provide broader automatic-download choices, but those choices allow more remote image requests and reduce control over tracking. On organization-managed accounts, an administrator may restrict the setting.

Will downloading a linked picture tell the sender I opened the email?

A request to a remote image host can disclose message activity. The effect depends on the message and its remote content; linked tracking pixels are one reason Microsoft describes image blocking as a privacy protection.
