Fix librfc32.dll by installing the SAP-supplied, non-Unicode RFC library that matches the failing application’s bitness and SAP kernel release. Download the archive from the SAP Support Portal, place the extracted file in the directory required by that connector, remove conflicting copies, and restart the application. A random DLL download, a 32/64-bit mismatch, an incompatible SAP release, or a missing Microsoft runtime can all produce the same-looking error.
What librfc32.dll is—and why the error appears
librfc32.dll is SAP’s legacy, non-Unicode Remote Function Call (RFC) client library. Older SAP integrations, including some BW/MDX connectors, use it to communicate with an SAP system. It is not a general Windows component that can be safely replaced with any file carrying the same name.

A message such as “cannot call classic RFC API” normally means the consuming program could not load or use the RFC library it expects. The failure can occur before any SAP logon attempt. Typical causes are:
- The DLL is absent from the location the application searches.
- The application is 32-bit but the installed library is 64-bit, or the reverse.
- The library was built for a different SAP kernel or release than the connector supports.
- More than one copy exists and the program selects the wrong one.
- A required Microsoft Visual C++ runtime is missing or damaged.
- The connector or SAP GUI version no longer supports this legacy library.
Those are loading, dependency, and compatibility problems. Merely “registering” a DLL is not a universal remedy; the file must be the correct build and must be discoverable by the process that loads it.

Before changing anything: identify the failing process
Do not copy a replacement file until you know which program is failing. The same Windows computer may contain a 32-bit reporting tool, a 64-bit desktop connector, and other SAP clients, each with different requirements.
Record the application and exact message
- Write down the product name and version shown in the error window or support page.
- Capture the complete wording, especially “cannot call classic RFC API,” “entry point,” or a Visual C++ runtime message.
- Note whether the failure occurs when the program starts, when it opens an SAP connection, or only when it refreshes data.
The timing helps separate a missing library from a dependency or connector-specific problem, but it does not replace checking the vendor’s installation instructions.
Determine whether the process is 32-bit or 64-bit
Bitness belongs to the application process, not simply to the edition of Windows. Check the connector’s documentation or its executable details, and use the application’s own About or connection diagnostics page when available. If the product documentation says it is a 32-bit workflow running on 64-bit Windows, treat it as 32-bit even though Windows itself is 64-bit.

Check the SAP release requirement
Find the SAP NetWeaver or kernel release named by the connector. SAP distributes RFC libraries by release and architecture. “Latest” is not a safe selection when the consuming product requires an older interface.

Get the correct file from SAP
SAP’s MDX parser guidance directs administrators to the SAP Support Portal, select the matching SAP kernel release and Windows architecture, download the RFC library archive, and extract librfc32.dll. For the old MDX parser, the required choice is the NON-UNICODE file.
- Sign in to the SAP Support Portal with an account authorized to download the required software.
- Open the Support Packages and Patches area and locate the RFC library distribution associated with the SAP kernel or NetWeaver release used by the connector.
- Select the Windows architecture that matches the consuming process, not merely the operating system.
- For a connector that specifically asks for the classic library, choose the non-Unicode RFC package.
- Download the archive supplied by SAP and extract the copy of
librfc32.dllwithout renaming it.
A third-party “DLL download” site cannot establish that the file matches your SAP release, process bitness, or connector. It may also supply a tampered or incomplete file. If you cannot access the required SAP package, ask the SAP administrator or the connector vendor for the supported distribution rather than substituting an arbitrary copy.

Put librfc32.dll in the directory your connector expects
There is no universal destination. The correct directory is determined by the consuming product’s instructions and the process architecture. Two documented examples illustrate why copying by habit can make the error worse:

The names of the Windows folders can be counterintuitive on a 64-bit installation, which is why the product’s architecture-specific directions take priority. Do not place a 32-bit file in a 64-bit connector’s directory simply because that folder is familiar.
Copy the file safely
- Close the consuming application and any background process belonging to it.
- Open the destination named by the connector’s documentation.
- If a file with the same name is present, make a backup copy outside the active search locations and record its version or source.
- Copy the SAP-extracted
librfc32.dllinto the required directory. Approve the Windows administrator prompt only if you have verified the path and package. - Do not rename the file, change its extension, or copy the archive itself into the destination.
If the product supplies its own packaged copy or generates one during installation, follow that workflow instead of forcing a system-wide replacement. A vendor-managed copy can be part of the connector’s supported configuration.

Remove conflicting copies
SAP Note 336693 states: “In general, only one librfc32.dll may be active on a host.” Multiple copies can cause the application to load a different release from the one you just installed.

Use Windows Search or File Explorer to search the drives where SAP software and the connector are installed for librfc32.dll. Include application folders, SAP-related folders, and the Windows directory. Do not delete files blindly: first record each full path and determine which product placed it there.
Keep one supported active copy
- Identify the copy required by the productive connector and the directory specified by its documentation.
- Close every application that could load the library.
- For other copies, rename them with a non-DLL extension or move them to a backup location outside directories searched by the connector. Preserve a backup until testing is complete.
- Retest the application. If another product stops working, restore its file and consult that product’s support guidance; the “one active copy” rule must be reconciled with the vendor’s supported installation model.
Do not leave several versions in different Windows and application directories and assume the newest one will win. The selected file depends on the process and its search order, so an apparently successful copy operation may not change what is actually loaded.
Do not substitute librfc32u.dll
librfc32u.dll is the Unicode RFC library, not an interchangeable spelling of librfc32.dll. SAP’s note explains that the Unicode library cannot be registered in the same manner and may be kept in the application’s current directory; it has different handling requirements.
If the connector explicitly requests the classic, non-Unicode API, install the non-Unicode file it specifies. If its documentation requests the Unicode variant, use that product’s instructions instead of renaming one file to look like the other. A renamed Unicode DLL does not convert it into the classic library and can create a different loading error.

Restart and interpret the next error
After replacing or relocating the file, restart the consuming application completely. If it runs as a background service or scheduled process, restart that process according to the product’s administration instructions as well. Then repeat the exact operation that originally failed.
If the original classic RFC message disappears
The connector can now find and call the expected library. Continue with a normal SAP connection test and data refresh. Keep the recorded package and path so a future update does not overwrite the working configuration.
If the message changes to a Visual C++ runtime error
That is a separate dependency problem, not proof that another copy of librfc32.dll is needed. The Microsoft Fabric example documents the Visual C++ 2005 SP1 ATL Security Update (x64) as a prerequisite for its historical 64-bit connector scenario. Install only the exact runtime version documented by your connector and operating system, using the connector vendor’s supported source. Do not install random runtime DLLs beside the SAP library.
If the message reports an entry point or incompatible procedure
This usually indicates a version or architecture mismatch: the process found a DLL, but it is not the build whose exported functions the connector expects. Recheck the process bitness, SAP kernel release, and whether the archive was the non-Unicode package. Restore the previously backed-up file if necessary and obtain the release-specific package from SAP.
If the same error remains unchanged
- Confirm that the file exists in the exact directory documented for that connector.
- Check that Windows did not leave the archive compressed or append an extra extension during extraction.
- Search for another active copy and remove or rename the conflict according to the procedure above.
- Verify that the application you are launching is the one whose bitness you measured; shortcuts can point to a different executable.
- Check whether the connector has a packaged or generated library that supersedes the system copy.
- Review the product’s support matrix for the SAP GUI, SAP kernel, and connector versions.
Product-specific cautions
Microsoft Fabric or Power BI SAP BW connectors
Some Fabric documentation describes a recent 64-bit librfc32.dll in C:WindowsSystem32 and identifies the Visual C++ 2005 SP1 ATL Security Update (x64) as a prerequisite for that historical connector scenario. Treat both details as version-specific. Confirm that your current connector still uses the classic library and follow its current installation page before changing a system directory.

Process Runner
Process Runner documentation says that, for version 5.20.3 or later, the required file is generated under C:ProgramDataInnoweraCommon and then copied to the architecture-specific Windows directory. Its support warning also states: “SAP does not support librfc32.dll from SAP GUI 7.50 onwards.” That is a product-specific support statement, not a universal rule for every SAP integration. Verify the exact Process Runner version, SAP GUI version, and supported library before replacing anything.
Other SAP integrations
For an integration not covered by those examples, its installation guide controls the destination and packaging. Compare the candidate fix using these six fields: consuming application, process bitness, SAP kernel or release, Unicode versus non-Unicode library, installation directory, and whether the vendor supplies its own copy. There is no single “best DLL” independent of those variables.
What not to do
- Do not download a random
librfc32.dllfrom an unofficial DLL repository. - Do not copy a 32-bit library into a 64-bit application or vice versa.
- Do not assume the newest SAP archive is compatible with an older connector.
- Do not replace
librfc32.dllwithlibrfc32u.dllby renaming it. - Do not delete every duplicate before recording which product owns each copy.
- Do not treat a Visual C++ runtime message as another missing SAP DLL.
- Do not use “registration” as a substitute for the correct file, release, architecture, and search path.
Final verification checklist
Before closing the incident, confirm each item:
- The failing executable and its bitness are documented.
- The SAP kernel or NetWeaver release required by that executable is known.
- The archive came from SAP’s supported distribution or the connector vendor’s packaged workflow.
- The selected package is non-Unicode when the classic API is required.
- The file is in the exact architecture-specific directory named by the connector.
- Conflicting active copies have been removed or renamed safely.
- The consuming application was fully restarted.
- Any new Visual C++ error was handled as a separate, documented prerequisite.
- The SAP GUI and connector versions are within the product’s support policy, especially where SAP GUI 7.50 or later is involved.
If all nine checks pass and the connector still cannot call the classic RFC API, stop swapping DLLs. Give the connector vendor or SAP administrator the application version, process architecture, SAP kernel release, exact error text, every location checked, and the package source. That information lets them identify an unsupported combination or a dependency failure without risking further system-wide changes.

When a different fix is required
A missing librfc32.dll is only one explanation for a classic RFC error. If the file is present, correctly matched, and uniquely active, the remaining possibilities include an unsupported SAP GUI or connector release, a missing runtime dependency, or an application-specific packaging rule. In those cases, installing another copy can hide the real cause. Use the connector’s support matrix and the evidence from the changed error message to choose the next step.
