Fix an AI-generated website the same way you fix any front-end bug: reproduce the visual failure, inspect the element as the browser actually rendered it, identify the rule or markup responsible, make one small source change, and test that change at the affected viewport and in the browsers your visitors use. AI-written code can contain ordinary CSS and HTML mistakes—malformed declarations, unsupported features, selectors that miss their target, or rules that lose in the cascade—but the debugging method is not unique to AI.

This workflow takes you from a vague complaint such as “the page looks wrong” to a small, verified edit that you can keep in the project.

Start with a precise, reproducible symptom

Write down the expected result and the observed result before changing code. Include the page or component, the viewport width, the browser, and whether the problem appears after a reload or only after an interaction. A statement such as “the navigation wraps onto two lines at a 390-pixel viewport in Safari” gives you a testable target; “the page is broken” does not.

  • Expected: what the design or requirement says should happen.
  • Observed: the exact visual or interaction difference.
  • Location: URL, component, and the element that appears wrong.
  • Conditions: viewport dimensions, zoom level, browser and operating system, and any action needed to reproduce it.
  • Evidence: a screenshot or screen recording when spacing, wrapping, or alignment is difficult to describe.

Keep the note with the issue. You will use the same conditions after the edit to prove that the fix worked and to check nearby states for regressions.

What the browser is actually telling you

Open the page in a modern browser and inspect the element that looks wrong. On Windows or Linux, Ctrl+Shift+I opens DevTools; on macOS, use Command+Option+I. You can also right-click the element and choose Inspect. DevTools shows the runtime HTML, not merely the template or component source that generated it, and it lists the CSS rules that apply to the selected node.

Read the rendered markup first

In the Elements or Inspector panel, confirm that the node you selected is the one you intended to style. Check its tag, classes, attributes, parent containers, and whether another element is covering it. Generated pages sometimes produce a different class name, nesting level, or duplicate element than the source you remember editing. If a component is created by JavaScript, the runtime tree is the authoritative structure for this diagnosis.

Use computed styles to find the final value

The Styles or Rules pane lists matching declarations. A crossed-out declaration has lost to another declaration, while a warning icon can indicate invalid syntax or an unsupported value. The Computed view shows the final value the browser uses after the cascade, inheritance, and defaults have been resolved. Expand a computed property to see which rule supplied it. If you change a value directly in DevTools and the appearance changes, you have confirmed that the property and element are relevant; the temporary edit is not yet a permanent fix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Expose layout behavior

When the issue involves alignment, wrapping, or unexpected space, open the Grid or Flexbox overlay and layout panels when your browser provides them. They can reveal the container’s tracks, gaps, flex direction, item sizes, and overflow. This is often faster than guessing whether the problem is a margin, a width constraint, or the layout mode itself.

Classify the cause before editing source

A CSS declaration can fail for several independent reasons. Classifying the failure prevents you from adding a random override that hides the real problem.

Failure class What you see in DevTools What to check Typical corrective action
Malformed CSS The rule is missing, a declaration is crossed out unexpectedly, or a warning appears. Braces, colons, semicolons, parentheses, unit syntax, and selector spelling. Correct the syntax and reload; do not compensate with a second rule.
Unsupported feature The declaration is shown as invalid or ignored in one browser. Current compatibility information for the exact property or value and the browsers you support. Use a supported fallback, a progressive enhancement, or a different layout method.
Selector mismatch The desired rule never appears among matching rules. Runtime tag, class, attribute, nesting, and whether a state class is present. Target the actual element or correct the markup that should carry the class.
Cascade or specificity conflict Your declaration appears but is crossed out, or another rule supplies the computed value. Specificity, source order, origin, inheritance, and any !important declaration. Adjust the responsible rule or component boundary; avoid escalating specificity without need.
Wrong element or layout context The property is valid, but changing it has no visible effect. Whether the element participates in the expected flex, grid, block, or positioned context. Move the property to the container or item that controls the behavior.
Missing asset or runtime content CSS appears correct, but an image, font, stylesheet, or generated node is absent. Console errors, Network requests, file paths, load status, and the runtime DOM. Fix the asset path, loading order, script error, or generated markup.

MDN’s Debugging CSS guide summarizes an important reality: “Browsers expect your CSS and HTML to be correctly written, however browsers also are very forgiving and will try their best to display your webpages even if there are errors in the markup or stylesheet.” A page that renders is therefore not proof that every rule was accepted.

A seven-step repair workflow

1. Reproduce the failure under fixed conditions

Load the page in the browser and set the viewport to the size recorded in your symptom note. If the problem follows a hover, menu toggle, form validation state, or asynchronous render, perform that action every time. Capture a before screenshot when the visual difference matters. Do not begin by rewriting the whole stylesheet; first make the failure repeatable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Inspect the exact rendered element

Use Inspect Element on the visible problem. Trace upward through its parents to find the container that controls width, height, display, positioning, or overflow. Confirm that the expected class, data attribute, image, and text are present. If the element is not in the runtime DOM, the issue is structural or JavaScript-related rather than a missing visual declaration.

3. Locate the losing or missing rule

In Styles, search for the property that should control the symptom: display, position, width, min-width, max-width, margin, padding, gap, overflow, font-size, or a related property. Inspect crossed-out declarations and expand Computed values to identify the winning rule. Check inherited values when typography or color appears wrong.

Then test one hypothesis at a time. Toggle a declaration, change one value, or temporarily disable a competing rule. If the layout responds as predicted, you have isolated a cause. If it does not, restore the temporary edit and inspect the parent context or the runtime structure instead of stacking another override.

4. Check syntax and feature support

Read the declaration exactly as the browser parses it. A missing unit, malformed function, unmatched brace, invalid custom-property value, or typo can invalidate the intended result. Also check whether the property or value is supported in every target browser. A newer feature may work in one browser and be ignored in another, leaving a fallback layout that looks unrelated to the original code.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the browser’s warning indicator and a current compatibility table for the specific feature. Do not assume that code generated from a recent example is universally available. If you need a fallback, put the supported declaration first and the enhancement after it, then test both paths.

5. Verify markup, assets, and scripts

When the expected rule is present and not overridden but the visual output still differs, inspect everything the rule depends on. Confirm that the image has loaded and has the intended intrinsic dimensions, the font request succeeded, the stylesheet is the one you edited, and the generated node contains the expected content. Open the Console for parsing or runtime errors and the Network panel for failed CSS, font, image, or script requests. A missing asset can masquerade as a spacing or sizing bug.

6. Make the smallest source change

Transfer the proven DevTools experiment into the source file, component style, or design token that owns the behavior. Change one rule or one related group of declarations. Avoid a broad selector such as div { ... } when a component class identifies the intended scope. Avoid !important unless you have a documented reason and understand which rule it must override.

Save, reload or rebuild as the project requires, and repeat the original reproduction steps. Confirm that the symptom is gone, then inspect neighboring components and states. A fix that works only after a hot reload, only at one width, or only with cached assets is not verified.

7. Reduce the example when the cause remains unclear

Create a minimal reproduction containing only the relevant markup, CSS, and any JavaScript needed to trigger the behavior. Remove unrelated sections systematically rather than deleting everything at once. If the page is dynamically generated, make a static copy of the rendered output for investigation. A reduced example can reveal an inherited style, selector collision, or layout constraint that was hidden by the full application, and it gives others a clear case to evaluate.

Responsive layout: test the failure where users see it

A desktop screenshot cannot certify a mobile layout. Test at the failing width, a narrow mobile width, and a typical desktop width. Also check intermediate widths where a flex row, grid, navigation, or long heading is likely to wrap. MDN describes responsive failures in which a desktop page becomes difficult to use on mobile; treat readability, tap targets, scrolling, and content order as part of correctness, not optional polish.

Useful viewport checks

  • Does text remain readable without horizontal scrolling?
  • Can navigation, buttons, and form controls be reached and activated without overlap?
  • Do images and media shrink within their containers rather than forcing overflow?
  • Do flex items or grid tracks have an unintended minimum size?
  • Do breakpoints switch at the widths the content actually needs, rather than at an arbitrary device label?
  • Does the repaired component still align with adjacent components at both wide and narrow sizes?

When a newer CSS feature is involved, test the browsers that matter to your audience and consult current compatibility data. If support differs, verify the fallback rather than assuming the unsupported browser will approximate the intended design.

Common symptoms and focused investigations

“The CSS is not working”

First determine whether the rule matches. If it is absent from Styles, inspect the runtime class and stylesheet loading. If it appears crossed out, follow the winning declaration in Computed. If it appears active but has no effect, check whether the property applies to that element or whether a parent layout context controls the result. This sequence distinguishes a missing selector from a cascade conflict and from a wrong target.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Why is my CSS being overridden?”

Compare the competing selectors and their source order, then check whether the winning value is inherited, supplied by an inline style, or marked !important. Prefer changing the rule that should own the component rather than creating a more-specific chain. A narrow, understandable selector is easier to maintain when generated code is edited later.

“The layout is broken on mobile”

Set the exact narrow viewport, inspect the element that overflows, and trace its ancestors. Look for fixed widths, minimum widths, non-wrapping text, oversized gaps, absolutely positioned content, and media without a fluid constraint. Verify the breakpoint transition at nearby widths; a rule that fixes 390 pixels can still fail at 430 pixels if the threshold or content assumption is wrong.

“The page looks different from the prompt”

Treat the prompt as an expectation, not as a technical specification. Compare the rendered structure and computed values with the intended behavior. Identify the first concrete difference—such as a missing font, an incorrect container width, or a selector that targets a sibling—and repair that cause. Do not replace working code wholesale merely because the visual result is not identical to a natural-language description.

Using AI assistance without surrendering control

Chrome DevTools includes an AI assistance feature that can analyze the selected element and its current DevTools context, answer styling questions, and suggest code. Availability and interface details can change because the feature is experimental. Chrome’s documentation warns: “AI assistance might generate code with side effects.” Treat every suggestion as a hypothesis that requires the same inspection and testing as code written by a person.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Give the assistant evidence, not a vague request

A useful request identifies the element, expected behavior, observed behavior, viewport, browser, relevant computed values, and constraints. Ask for the smallest change and an explanation of possible side effects. For example:

Element: .site-nav inside .header-inner
Expected: one row at widths of 768px and above
Observed: items wrap at 390px and create horizontal scrolling
Viewport/browser: 390px wide, current mobile browser
Relevant computed styles: display:flex; flex-wrap:nowrap; min-width:640px
Constraints: keep desktop spacing; do not change markup
Suggest the smallest CSS change, explain why it works, and identify risks.

The assistant’s response should point you toward evidence, not replace it. Confirm that every selector and property exists in the project, preview the change, and test the original and adjacent viewports.

Review before applying or saving

AI assistance may pause before executing an operation that has side effects. Read the proposed code instead of approving automatically. With a connected workspace, review the source diff before saving. Check that the edit is limited to the intended file and component, that it does not add a broad reset or unrelated dependency, and that it preserves existing fallbacks. Then run the same browser checks you would run for a manual change.

How to choose between two plausible fixes

When both options appear to solve the screenshot, compare them against the actual project requirements rather than choosing the shortest snippet.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Decision axis Questions to ask
Correctness Does the change resolve the exact reproduced symptom, including the interaction or state that triggers it?
Responsive behavior Does it work at the failing narrow width, a normal desktop width, and the intermediate widths where wrapping changes?
Browser support Are the properties and values available in the browsers the site must support, or is a tested fallback present?
Scope Does the selector affect only the intended component, or could it alter unrelated elements?
Maintainability Can another developer understand why the rule exists and preserve it when generated code is edited or regenerated?
Side effects Does it change overflow, keyboard access, reading order, performance, or content visibility elsewhere?

Prefer the smallest verified change that satisfies these tests. There is no universal selector or framework-specific remedy for every AI-generated project; the correct edit depends on the rendered structure and the browsers you support.

A final verification checklist

  • The original symptom is reproducible and documented.
  • The inspected node and its parent layout context are the intended ones.
  • The responsible rule was identified through matching rules or computed values.
  • Syntax, browser support, inheritance, specificity, and source order were checked.
  • Markup, assets, stylesheets, and scripts load without relevant console or network errors.
  • The permanent source change is smaller and more targeted than a page-wide override.
  • The original viewport and browser now show the expected result.
  • Narrow mobile, typical desktop, and important intermediate widths were checked.
  • Nearby components and interaction states show no regression.
  • If an AI suggestion was used, its diff and side effects were reviewed before saving.
