How to Fix Large Resin Prints That Fail to Stick to the Build Plate

If a large resin print has come loose, stop the next job and inspect the failure before changing exposure settings. A bare build plate with a cured patch on the vat film points to a plate-adhesion failure; a raft that stayed on the plate while the model separated from its supports points to a different problem. Clear cured debris from the vat, check the plate and release film, then verify the printer-specific Z calibration and resin profile. Only after those checks should you adjust settings or redesign the print.

First identify where the print failed

“Not sticking to the build plate” can describe two different failures. Distinguishing them matters: increasing bottom exposure may help a raft release from the plate, but it will not correct a model that has detached from its supports. Before cleaning up, note what remains on the plate and what is on the vat film. That evidence can narrow the cause more reliably than trying several settings at once.

The plate is bare and cured resin is on the vat film

This pattern indicates that the print detached from the platform. A partially detached raft is also an adhesion warning. Check plate calibration, surface condition, the first-layer contact area, and the bottom-exposure profile. Formlabs’ non-adherence guide describes this pattern and discusses causes such as insufficient first-layer contact and printing without a raft.

A flat patch of cured resin on the release film is not just a sign that the print failed; it is also debris that must be cleared before another job. If it remains in the vat, the next build can be interrupted or damaged. Remove it using the printer maker’s recommended method, then inspect the film before refilling or restarting.

The raft remains attached, but the model is missing or separated

That is not simply a build-plate adhesion problem. Investigate the supports, normal-layer exposure, model orientation, hollowing, and geometry. Formlabs distinguishes separation at the supports from a raft that has come off the platform; Phrozen’s support-failure guidance also addresses cases where supports print but the model does not.

Use the location of the break as a clue. An intact raft means the platform bond held through at least the beginning of the print; it shifts attention toward the connection between the raft, supports, and model or toward the model’s peel forces. Do not keep increasing bottom exposure just because the finished object is absent: first-layer settings cannot strengthen a weak support arrangement higher in the build.

Neither the plate nor the vat shows cured resin

If there is no cured resin on either surface, check for debris or damage that could interfere with curing, and inspect the printer’s screen or light source using the manufacturer’s procedure. Formlabs lists debris, clouding, damage, and contaminated optical surfaces among conditions that can weaken or block curing. Do not assume a Z-level adjustment is the answer when nothing appears to have cured.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate a likely curing problem from an adhesion problem. When there is no cured material at all, a raft or support redesign does not address the immediate clue. Follow the printer maker’s inspection procedure for the screen, light source, tank, and optical surfaces, and contact support if you cannot safely determine whether the machine is curing as expected.

Use this troubleshooting order before another large print

  1. Stop and clear the vat. Remove cured resin and debris before starting another job. Phrozen specifically advises clearing cured resin from the vat. Inspect the release film for debris, clouding, or visible damage; use the printer maker’s approved method and tools.
  2. Record the failure pattern. Note whether the plate is bare, whether a raft is partly attached, whether cured material is on the film, and whether the raft stayed on the plate while the model separated. Photograph the plate, vat, failed raft, and sliced model if you may need support.
  3. Recalibrate Z and inspect the plate. Use the exact leveling or Z-axis calibration procedure for your printer model. Check for residue, unevenness, or a surface condition the manufacturer identifies as unsuitable. Phrozen lists incorrect leveling, an uneven plate, and an overly smooth surface as possible causes.
  4. Confirm the resin and machine profile. Verify the printer model, resin name and color, and the profile selected in the slicer. Do not copy exposure seconds from another printer or resin without checking compatibility.
  5. Review the large model’s contact and peel conditions. Check raft size and first-layer contact, orientation, support strength, hollowing and drainage, and whether the geometry creates a large suction-producing cross-section. Change one factor at a time.
  6. Make a controlled test. If calibration, cleanliness, and the profile are correct, adjust a relevant setting in a documented, modest step, then test a suitable print. Record the original and changed values so a result can be attributed to a change rather than several simultaneous edits.
  7. Escalate with useful evidence. If failure persists, send the manufacturer photographs plus the printer model, resin and color, profile and settings, and environmental conditions. This gives support a basis for checking the specific machine and material combination.

This order prevents a common troubleshooting trap: treating every failure as a setting problem. A dirty vat needs to be cleared whether or not exposure is correct. A plate that is not calibrated needs the maker’s calibration procedure. A support failure calls for a model review. Work through these checks first so a test print is testing one plausible cause rather than combining a cleanup, calibration, and profile change.

Check build-plate calibration and surface condition

Re-level with the printer’s own procedure

Incorrect Z calibration can leave the first layers without the intended contact with the plate. Recalibrate using the instructions for the exact printer rather than relying on a generic leveling method. Model designs, plate mechanisms, and firmware procedures vary, so an apparently similar machine may not use the same steps.

Follow the sequence and tools in the machine manual, and avoid substituting a leveling method intended for another printer. After calibration, retain the same resin profile for the first test if it is otherwise correct. If calibration and exposure are both changed at once, a successful result will not reveal which correction mattered.

Look for unevenness, residue, or an overly smooth surface

Inspect the plate for cured resin or other residue that could interfere with contact. Phrozen also identifies unevenness and an overly smooth surface as possible contributors to poor adhesion. Its guide suggests checking evenness with a ruler and backlight. If the manufacturer confirms that abrasion is appropriate for your plate, Phrozen suggests 80-grit sandpaper; this is a model-specific option, not a universal remedy. Sanding permanently changes a surface, so do not abrade a plate unless the printer maker’s guidance supports it.

For the ruler-and-backlight check, look for a visible gap or uneven contact rather than assuming that every plate needs sanding. The point of the check is to identify whether the plate is uneven; it does not by itself establish that abrasion is approved for your machine. If the manufacturer does not recommend modifying the surface, leave it alone and ask support whether the plate’s condition is within specification.

Keep the vat film separate from the plate diagnosis

Debris or damage on the release film can affect a print even when the plate is level. Clear the vat before retrying and inspect the film, but avoid using an unapproved tool on it. Formlabs warns against metal tools when inspecting some resin tanks. A metal scraper mentioned in a build-plate removal guide is not thereby safe for every vat film.

Verify exposure and lift settings without copying blindly

Bottom exposure affects how the first layers bond to the plate, but the correct value depends on the printer, resin, and print. Large prints can impose different demands from small ones, yet a universal number of seconds cannot be inferred from another machine’s profile.

When checking a slicer profile, verify the actual printer model and resin, not just the printer brand or a similar resin name. Color and machine compatibility matter: an exposure table for one resin color and one model does not establish settings for a different combination. If the original profile came from a machine-specific resin setting sheet, compare it with the current official setting sheet before experimenting.

Phrozen’s general recommendations

Phrozen’s troubleshooting article, updated September 30, 2025, recommends increasing bottom exposure time by 20% for big models or a full build plate. It also recommends lowering lifting speed to below 40 mm/min. Treat both as Phrozen’s guidance to check against the correct printer and resin profile, not as guaranteed settings for every resin printer.

These values are a starting point for readers using a compatible Phrozen setup, not a promise that a large print will adhere. Confirm that the recommendation fits your machine and material, then make one change at a time and record the result. Lift speed affects how the print separates from the film; the suggestion to lower it is distinct from changing the first-layer exposure.

ELEGOO’s original-Mars example is machine-specific

ELEGOO’s page, published November 24, 2020, gives exposure values by resin color for the original Mars and says users of other models should consult the official resin setting sheet. It suggests 70–75 seconds of bottom exposure for a large or heavy model in that context. Those values are not a general starting point for other Mars generations, other printers, or other resins. Check the source’s machine- and resin-specific guidance alongside the setting sheet for the actual printer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The 70–75 second suggestion should not be combined automatically with Phrozen’s percentage adjustment: the recommendations come from different manufacturer contexts and are not interchangeable. If you do not have the original Mars and matching resin setup, use the setting sheet for your own printer and resin instead of importing that number.

Change settings in a way that teaches you something

  • Save or write down the current profile before editing it.
  • Check bottom exposure first when the raft itself has detached and the profile may not suit the selected resin and printer.
  • Use the printer or resin maker’s guidance to choose changes to lift speed, rest time, or light-off delay; the sources cited here do not establish one universal value for those settings.
  • Adjust one relevant setting at a time and record the result. If you change exposure, lift speed, and geometry together, a successful print will not tell you which change mattered.

Do not treat longer exposure as a cure-all. If the plate is miscalibrated, the vat is contaminated, the film is damaged, or the model is failing at its supports, an exposure change alone does not address that cause.

Reduce the demands a large model puts on its raft and supports

Give the first layers enough contact area

A large object can still have a small effective connection to the plate if its orientation or raft design leaves little first-layer area. Formlabs identifies too-small first-layer contact and printing without a raft as possible causes of non-adherence, and recommends supports, a raft, and an orientation that provides adequate contact. Apply that principle in the workflow for your printer and slicer; the exact raft and support controls differ by system.

Think about the footprint that actually touches the plate, not just the model’s overall dimensions. A tall or broad object may begin with a small contact patch if its orientation puts only a narrow region near the plate. A suitable raft and supported orientation can increase that initial contact, while still leaving the rest of the model supported according to the slicer and printer workflow.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review supports and orientation when the raft survives

If the raft is still attached but the model separated, inspect support strength and placement, orientation, and normal-layer exposure rather than simply enlarging or increasing exposure for the raft. Phrozen’s support-failure guidance is relevant to this distinct pattern. The failure point is evidence: plate separation implicates the plate-level bond, while separation above an intact raft calls for a model- and support-level diagnosis.

For a large or heavy model, do not assume the supports are adequate just because a raft printed. Review the support arrangement in the sliced model and check whether the model’s orientation creates loads that the supports must withstand. If the print repeatedly fails at the same connection, take a screenshot or photograph of that area to share with support rather than changing unrelated plate settings.

Consider suction, hollowing, and drainage

Large cross-sections and enclosed geometry can create suction-related loads during peeling from the release film. Review whether the model’s orientation creates a broad cross-section, whether hollowing is appropriate, and whether drainage is accounted for. These choices interact with support strength and printer type, so there is no single orientation or hollowing setting that fits every model. If the raft remains secure while the model fails higher up, prioritize this geometry review.

Look through the sliced model layer by layer where the broad section or failure occurs. A large cross-section may mean more area is involved as layers separate from the film, while enclosed or hollow geometry raises questions about how the model is designed to drain. These are reasons to review orientation and hollowing, not a universal instruction to hollow every model. Use the slicer and printer workflow appropriate to the job.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Account for temperature without assuming a universal target

Phrozen lists inappropriate temperature as a possible cause of plate-adhesion trouble. ELEGOO notes that lower ambient temperature can require an appropriate bottom-exposure adjustment. Neither source establishes one safe target temperature for every resin and printer combination. Follow the documentation for the specific resin and machine, and record the conditions when comparing test prints instead of changing temperature and exposure at the same time.

If comparing attempts, keep a note of the surrounding conditions along with the settings. That record can help distinguish a change in ambient conditions from a change in profile or geometry. Do not select a target temperature based on a different resin’s recommendation; consult the resin and printer documentation for the combination you are using.

Clean up safely and protect the printer

  • Wear gloves to avoid skin contact with liquid resin, and follow the resin safety data sheet and printer manual for handling and cleanup.
  • Remove cured material from the vat with the manufacturer’s recommended method and tools. Do not assume a tool suitable for the build plate is safe on the release film or tank.
  • Phrozen’s print-removal guidance describes using a metal scraper on a build plate; that does not authorize using one on every vat film.
  • If warming a plate to release a print, Phrozen says not to exceed the resin’s glass-transition temperature. Consult the relevant resin documentation before applying heat.

Cleanup and print removal are separate from fixing adhesion. A scraper or gloves can be relevant to safe handling, but they do not make a poorly calibrated plate, incompatible profile, or weak support arrangement print successfully. Protect the release film while clearing the vat, and follow the maker’s instructions for the specific surface you are cleaning.

What to send the manufacturer if the failure continues

Give support enough detail to distinguish an adhesion problem from curing, support, or geometry failure. Include the printer model and resin name and color; the slicer profile and relevant settings; whether the plate was bare or a raft remained; what was visible on the vat film; and the environmental conditions. Attach photographs of the plate, vat, failed raft, and sliced model. Do not alter the plate or continue printing over cured debris while waiting for a diagnosis.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Include the values you changed between attempts and identify which change came first. If the printer maker asks for particular photographs or diagnostic steps, follow its instructions rather than opening or modifying components on your own. A precise description such as “raft detached and a cured patch remained on the film” is more useful than “the print failed,” because it records where the failure occurred.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I check first when a large resin print comes off the build plate?

Stop the next print and inspect the failure pattern. A bare plate with cured resin on the vat film points to platform detachment; an intact raft with the model missing points to supports, normal-layer exposure, or geometry. Clear cured debris from the vat before retrying, then check the plate, calibration, and resin profile.

Should I increase bottom exposure for a large resin print?

Only after confirming that the raft itself detached and the selected profile matches your printer and resin. Phrozen’s guide recommends a 20% increase for big models or a full plate, but that is manufacturer guidance to verify against the specific setup, not a universal value. ELEGOO’s 70–75 seconds suggestion applies to its original-Mars context and should not be copied to other machines.

How fast should resin printer lift speed be to improve adhesion?

Phrozen recommends lowering lifting speed to below 40 mm/min in its general troubleshooting guidance. Check that recommendation against the correct printer and resin profile before applying it; it is not established as a universal setting for all resin printers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is sanding a resin build plate a good fix?

Phrozen suggests 80-grit sandpaper for an overly smooth surface, but sanding permanently changes the plate. First check the plate and follow the exact printer maker’s guidance. Do not abrade a plate unless the manufacturer confirms the option is appropriate for your model.

What if the raft stays on the plate but the model does not print?

Treat that as a support- or model-level failure rather than simply a plate-adhesion problem. Review support strength and placement, normal-layer exposure, orientation, hollowing, drainage, and broad cross-sections that may create suction loads. Phrozen’s support-failure guidance addresses cases where supports print but the model does not.

Can I use a metal scraper to clear resin from the vat film?

Do not assume so. Phrozen describes a metal scraper for removing prints from a build plate, but that does not make it safe for every vat film. Formlabs warns against metal tools when inspecting some resin tanks. Use the printer maker’s recommended cleanup method and tools.

What temperature should the resin printer be for better plate adhesion?

The manufacturer guidance here does not set one safe target for every resin and printer. Phrozen lists inappropriate temperature as a possible cause, and ELEGOO notes that lower ambient temperature can call for an appropriate bottom-exposure adjustment. Follow the documentation for your specific resin and machine, and record conditions during tests.

The Bottom Line

Before another large print, identify whether the raft detached or the model failed above it, clear cured resin from the vat, and verify the printer-specific calibration and resin profile. Then test one supported change at a time. Treat exposure, lift speed, surface abrasion, and temperature advice as setup-specific—not universal fixes.
