Set Settings > Display > Motion smoothness to Adaptive first, then update the phone, close background apps, restart, and check Device care. Adaptive can make supported Fold models feel smoother, but it cannot repair every cause of stutter: power-saving limits, low available memory, a faulty app, temporary system errors, or a hardware problem can produce similar symptoms. Work through the checks below in order, comparing the cover and main screens after each change.
Identify what is actually stuttering
Before changing settings, reproduce the problem deliberately. Watch the same animation or scroll the same page on the cover screen and the unfolded screen. Note whether the hesitation appears throughout One UI or only inside one downloaded app. Also record whether it began after a software update, an app installation or update, a settings change, or a period of heavy multitasking.

- System-wide stutter: home-screen swipes, the notification shade, Settings transitions, and scrolling all look uneven. Continue with Motion smoothness, software, memory, and power checks.
- One-app stutter: other parts of the interface remain smooth. Concentrate on that app, its updates, and Safe mode testing rather than changing every system setting.
- Cover-only or main-screen-only stutter: compare both displays at the same time. A difference helps isolate a display-specific setting or an app layout issue, but it does not by itself prove that a screen or hinge is damaged.
- Freezes or missed touches: treat this as a responsiveness problem, not merely a refresh-rate preference. Follow the maintenance steps and use the forced-restart method if the phone stops responding.
Samsung lists outdated software, background apps, insufficient available memory, and temporary system errors among common reasons a Galaxy device may slow down or freeze. Its troubleshooting guide also notes that menus vary by model, software, carrier, and app version; your Fold may therefore use slightly different labels or locations. On a supported model, open Settings > Display > Motion smoothness. Select Adaptive, tap Apply if that button appears, and test scrolling and transitions again. The Galaxy Z Fold6 manual describes Adaptive as automatically adjusting the display to a higher refresh rate for smoother animations and scrolling. Samsung’s general guidance uses 120 Hz as an example of a higher rate and 60 Hz as the Standard rate; the exact rates and available choices depend on the Fold generation and software.

Adaptive changes how often the display refreshes. It can make motion look less juddery, but it does not make an app’s underlying code execute faster. A game, browser tab, or social feed that is dropping frames because of its own workload may still stutter at a higher refresh rate. Use the setting as the first display check, not as a guarantee that every performance problem is solved.

These are display behaviors, not independent performance benchmarks. If Motion smoothness is absent, check whether your particular Fold and software build support it. Do not assume that every Z Fold has identical refresh-rate controls. A power-saving mode or a regional software build can also change which options are shown; verify the controls available on your phone before drawing conclusions.

Install software updates, close apps, and restart
Check for an update
- Open Settings > Software update. Some One UI releases label the entry Software update inside Settings; use the Settings search field if you cannot find it.
- Tap Download and install or the equivalent update command.
- Install an available update when the phone has sufficient battery and a reliable connection, then test the same animation again after the phone finishes restarting and optimizing.
Samsung says updates can improve performance, stability, and compatibility. An update may also alter menu names or available Motion smoothness choices, so recheck the Display setting after installation instead of assuming it stayed unchanged.
Close background apps without treating it as a permanent cure
Open the Recent apps view and dismiss apps you are not using, then repeat the test. This can remove a temporary workload, but constantly force-closing every app is not a substitute for finding a misbehaving app or a low-memory condition. If the stutter returns immediately after opening one app, note that app for the isolation test later.

Restart normally
Use the power menu to restart the Fold. A restart clears temporary system state and gives background services a clean start. It does not erase photos, messages, or installed apps.
Force a restart when the phone is frozen
If the screen will not respond, Samsung’s U.S. instructions say to hold the Side key and Volume down together for more than seven seconds until the phone restarts. Button labels and timing prompts can differ by One UI version, so use the device-specific instructions shown by Samsung if that combination does not work. A forced restart is a recovery step for an unresponsive device, not a routine way to manage ordinary animation lag.

Use Device care to inspect memory and storage
Open Settings > Device care. Depending on the model, region, or One UI version, the section may be called Battery and device care. Review the Memory and Storage panels before deleting anything.
Clean temporary background activity
- In Device care, open Memory.
- Tap Clean now to stop unused background apps and release memory that those apps are holding.
- Return to the interface and test the animation that was stuttering.
Samsung’s Quick optimization can close background apps and clear unneeded memory. The button may not appear when Device care considers the phone to be in good condition; its absence is not proof that the phone is malfunctioning.
Review storage carefully
Very low free storage can accompany slow behavior, so inspect the Storage panel and identify large files or apps you genuinely no longer need. Delete only items you have reviewed. Samsung’s storage flow asks you to select the categories or files to remove; do not use a blanket delete command, and do not clear app data unless you understand that it can remove that app’s local files, accounts, or settings. Clearing cache and deleting data are different operations, and the safest choice depends on the individual app.

Samsung’s Device Care guidance explains the Memory, Storage, and Quick optimization controls. Exact screens can vary, so follow the labels your Fold actually displays.
Check Power saving and performance profiles
Battery-focused settings can make a Fold feel less responsive. Open Device care or Battery settings and look for Power saving and any Performance profile control. Record the current state, change only one setting at a time, and compare the same animation before and after.
Power saving
Samsung documents an optional Power saving setting that can limit CPU speed to 70% when enabled. That is a setting specification, not a measured claim about how much smoother or slower your particular phone will feel. Temporarily turn Power saving off, if battery level and your usage allow, and test again. Re-enable it when you need the extra battery life.
Light performance profile
Some Galaxy models offer a Light performance profile that prioritizes battery life over processing speed. Samsung says this profile does not apply to game performance, but a battery-focused profile is still worth comparing when the complaint concerns general interface transitions, opening apps, or scrolling. The profile is not present on every Fold, and its wording can change with software.
If Motion smoothness is missing or unavailable, check these power controls before assuming the display hardware is at fault. Do not claim that a power setting caused the lag unless the behavior changes in a repeatable before-and-after comparison.

Determine whether an app is responsible
When the slowdown started after installing or updating a downloaded app, isolate that variable instead of deleting unrelated data.
Run Samsung Members diagnostics when available
Open Samsung Members and choose Support or Diagnostics, then run the available phone tests. Samsung Members and its Phone diagnostics feature are not installed or offered in every region, so skip this step if the app is unavailable. A diagnostic result can identify a component that needs attention, but a normal result does not prove that an app or software interaction is harmless.
Test in Safe mode
Safe mode starts Android with downloaded apps disabled. The exact way to enter it varies by model and One UI version, so use the Safe mode instructions in Samsung’s support path for your Fold rather than relying on a button sequence from another generation. Once in Safe mode, reproduce the same scrolling or transition:
- If the lag disappears, a downloaded app is a strong suspect. Uninstall apps installed or updated immediately before the problem began, one at a time, testing after each removal.
- If the lag remains, downloaded apps are less likely to be the sole cause. Continue with system settings, updates, and service escalation.
Removing an app can also remove its locally stored data. Back up anything the app does not synchronize before uninstalling it, and reinstall only after you have identified whether it was responsible.

Separate refresh-rate limits from real processing slowdowns
A refresh-rate change affects perceived motion: menus and scrolling can look smoother because the display updates more frequently. It does not increase an app’s network speed, fix a broken animation, or guarantee a higher frame rate when the processor is busy. Use this quick comparison:
- Set Motion smoothness to Adaptive and test a built-in screen such as Settings scrolling.
- Test the same screen with recent apps closed and Power saving temporarily off.
- Open the suspected app and repeat the test.
- Compare the cover and main displays.
If built-in screens improve with Adaptive while one app remains choppy, investigate that app. If every screen remains uneven, continue with updates, Device care, Safe mode, and service support. If only one display behaves differently, document the model, One UI version, screen, and exact steps so support can reproduce it.
Use a controlled troubleshooting order
Changing many settings at once makes it impossible to tell which action helped. Use this sequence and keep a short note of each result:
- Record the symptom: affected screen, apps, and the event that preceded it.
- Set Adaptive: Settings > Display > Motion smoothness, if available.
- Update: Settings > Software update, then restart.
- Reduce temporary load: close recent apps and use Device care > Memory > Clean now.
- Compare power settings: test with Power saving and a Light performance profile disabled, where those controls exist.
- Isolate downloads: use Samsung Members diagnostics and Safe mode if a recent app change is suspected.
- Escalate: contact Samsung support or request service if the issue survives these checks.
After each step, perform the same action for at least a few moments: swipe through Settings, open and close an app, and scroll a page on both displays. Consistent reproduction is more useful to support than a general description such as “the phone feels slow.”
When to request Samsung service
Request Samsung support or service when choppy animation persists after the software update, restart, Motion smoothness, Device care, power-setting, and app-isolation checks. Include the Fold model, One UI version, whether the cover or main screen is affected, the apps involved, and the date the issue began.
Do not infer a damaged display, hinge, or main board from animation stutter alone. Samsung lists faulty apps and cracked screens among possible causes of a slowly responding or frozen screen, but the symptoms described here do not establish a hardware diagnosis. Avoid opening the phone or buying repair parts based only on uneven animation; let an authorized service channel inspect persistent faults.
