What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Start by identifying what you mean by “lag.” Delayed inputs, rubber-banding, or a high ping point to network latency; irregular freezes point to stuttering; and a consistently low frame counter points to rendering performance. For connection problems, stabilize your broadband connection and choose the matchmaking server showing the lowest latency. For stuttering or low FPS on PC, verify the requirements, clean-install the current GPU driver, set MarvelRivals to Windows’ high-performance graphics mode, and lower demanding settings such as texture quality. None of these steps is a guaranteed cure: Marvel Rivals says slow performance can have several causes even when a computer meets or exceeds its minimum requirements.
First, separate network lag from stuttering and low FPS
Players often use “lag” for three different problems. Treating the wrong one wastes time and can make the experience worse—for example, changing graphics settings will not repair a high-latency connection.

Network latency (connection lag)
Network lag feels like delayed controls, players snapping or “rubber-banding” to earlier positions, attacks registering late, or a latency indicator that rises and falls. The frame rate can look normal while the match still feels unresponsive. The appropriate first checks are connection stability and the matchmaking server selected for the match.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteStuttering (uneven frame delivery)
Stuttering appears as short freezes, hitching, or an irregular rhythm even when the average FPS number looks adequate. It is a frame-time problem: frames arrive unevenly. Graphics drivers, Windows GPU assignment, memory pressure, shader compilation, and settings that overload the system are relevant suspects.

Low FPS (consistently slow rendering)
Low FPS is a sustained inability to render frames quickly enough. The image remains continuously choppy rather than hitching only at intervals. Resolution, texture quality, other graphics settings, and hardware capability matter more than the matchmaking server.
| What you notice | Most likely category | Start with |
|---|---|---|
| Delayed response, rubber-banding, or high and unstable latency | Network latency | Check broadband stability and select the lowest-latency matchmaking server offered |
| Brief freezes or irregular hitches while moving or fighting | Stuttering | Clean-install the GPU driver, set MarvelRivals to high performance in Windows, then test graphics settings |
| Low frame rate throughout a match | Low FPS | Compare your hardware with the official requirements and lower graphics load one group at a time |
This classification is a practical troubleshooting method, not a diagnostic label supplied by the game. A single computer can have more than one issue at once, so test the symptom that is most disruptive first.
How do I fix lag in Marvel Rivals?
Use a stable broadband connection
The official release FAQ lists broadband internet as a requirement and advises checking network stability in connection-related troubleshooting. Use the most stable connection available to your setup and avoid judging a network problem by FPS alone. The published guidance does not identify a particular router, VPN, DNS service, or network adapter as a universal fix, so do not assume buying or changing one will solve Marvel Rivals latency.
Choose the matchmaking server with the lowest latency
Marvel Rivals uses one shared login server, while matchmaking lets you choose among available regional servers. In the matchmaking server selector, choose the server that currently reports the lowest latency for your connection. A nearby geographic location often helps, but the displayed latency is the decision point because routing can differ by provider and time of day.
- Open the game’s matchmaking or region/server selection control.
- Review the latency values shown for the available servers.
- Select the lowest value that is available for your account and queue.
- Play a match and observe whether delayed inputs or rubber-banding improve.
Server selection addresses connection delay, not a graphics card that cannot render the scene quickly enough. If the latency is low but the picture still hitches or remains at a low frame rate, continue with the PC or console steps below.
Check the official PC requirements before changing settings
Marvel Rivals publishes minimum and recommended specifications, but the release FAQ explicitly cautions: “Even if your device meets or exceeds the minimum system requirements for Marvel Rivals, slow performance can be caused by various factors.” The lists are a baseline for compatibility, not an FPS guarantee.

The technical requirements page and the release FAQ present slightly different levels of detail for the recommended tier. The table preserves those differences instead of treating an omitted item as proof that it is unnecessary. Confirm the live official pages before a new installation because operating-system support, drivers, and game builds can change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy does Marvel Rivals still run slowly when my PC meets the minimum requirements?
Minimum specifications describe a floor for the listed configuration, not a promise of smooth play at every resolution, quality preset, match effect, or background workload. The official FAQ attributes slow performance to various factors and recommends reducing graphics settings when slowdowns continue. A system can also meet the listed parts while being affected by a driver installation, a Windows GPU preference, memory pressure, or a feature that is still experimental.
Use the requirements as a decision point:
- If a component is below the minimum, reduce expectations and settings first; the published list does not promise a particular frame rate below that baseline.
- If the component is at or above minimum but performance is poor, apply the software and settings steps rather than assuming a replacement GPU is required.
- If the system is at the recommended tier yet still hitches, follow the clean-driver and high-performance-mode procedure and test for a specific trigger such as a new match or a particular visual effect.
Fix persistent PC stuttering with the official driver and Windows steps
Marvel Rivals’ technical FAQ says that, after confirming the hardware meets the requirements, frequent stuttering should be addressed by reinstalling the latest graphics driver appropriate to the installed GPU and using clean installation mode. Driver-control-panel labels differ by vendor and software version, so use the clean-install option presented by your current driver package rather than relying on an old menu name.
Clean-install the current driver
- Identify whether the game is using an NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel GPU.
- Obtain the current driver package intended for that installed GPU from the GPU manufacturer.
- Run the installer and choose its clean-installation option when offered.
- Restart Windows when the installer requests it, then launch Marvel Rivals and reproduce the same activity that previously stuttered.
Do not install a driver for a different GPU model, and do not treat a driver number mentioned in an old guide as current without checking the manufacturer’s present package.
Set MarvelRivals to Windows high-performance graphics mode
The official FAQ gives this Windows path: Settings > System > Display > Graphics. Add or browse to Marvel.exe in the game directory, open its graphics options, and select the High performance preference.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Windows Settings.
- Go to System, then Display, then Graphics.
- Use the add or browse control to locate
Marvel.exein the Marvel Rivals installation directory. - Select the game entry, open its options, choose High performance, and save.
- Restart the game and compare the same map or activity with the previous result.
Windows and GPU software can change labels between versions. If the exact wording differs, look for the per-application GPU preference that corresponds to high performance. This setting is intended to let Windows allocate the higher-performance GPU to the game; it is not a guarantee that every hitch will disappear.

Reduce graphics load when FPS remains low
For slow performance that continues after the driver and Windows checks, the release FAQ recommends lowering graphics settings, including texture quality. Treat this as both mitigation and diagnosis: a setting that produces a clear improvement identifies where the rendering load is concentrated.
- Record the symptom in a repeatable situation, such as the same training area or a similar match phase.
- Lower one setting group—start with texture quality or another visibly demanding option—without changing several unrelated settings at once.
- Restart or reload if the game requires it, then repeat the same situation.
- Keep the change only if it improves the problem enough to justify the visual trade-off; otherwise restore it and test the next setting group.
Changing one group at a time is an editorial testing method, not an official benchmark procedure. There is no official percentage uplift for lowering textures, and the game does not promise that a particular preset will fix every system. If slowdowns remain after reducing settings, report them to the official Marvel Rivals Support bot on Discord with your hardware, game version, steps to reproduce, and when the slowdown occurs.
Should you try Switch Shader Compilation Mode?
Marvel Rivals announced Switch Shader Compilation Mode as an experimental PC-launcher option on April 10, 2025. The announcement says it reduces game memory use and targets severe FPS drops, frozen visuals, and crashes associated with memory shortages. It may be worth testing on a system with 16 GB of RAM or less that shows those symptoms.
Important limitations
- The feature is experimental and its availability can change. Check the current PC launcher rather than assuming the option is still present.
- The first time a material renders in a new match, it may appear abnormal for a few frames or cause a slight stutter.
- On systems with six or fewer CPU threads, enabling this mode together with AMD FSR3 Frame Generation can produce additional stuttering.
Because the announcement is dated, consider this a qualified experiment rather than a standard fix. Change only the shader-compilation option, reproduce the original problem, and revert it if the first-render hitch or the FSR3 interaction is worse than the memory-related slowdown you were trying to address.
Use the high- or low-resolution resource pack for storage constraints
A May 15, 2026 announcement introduced high- and low-resolution resource packs. The low-resolution pack reduces installation size “to a certain extent,” but some scenes may have lower visual fidelity. The announcement does not promise an FPS gain, so this is a disk-space and image-quality choice—not an officially quantified performance fix.
Switch packs on Steam
- Update Marvel Rivals to the current game version.
- Open your Steam Library and select Marvel Rivals.
- Open Properties, then the DLC tab.
- Uncheck the high-resolution resource pack to use the low-resolution pack.
- To restore higher visual fidelity, return to the same location and recheck the high-resolution pack so it downloads again.
At the time of the announcement, Epic Games Store support was described as “Coming Soon.” Check the current launcher before relying on an Epic-specific procedure; do not assume the Steam controls exist there.

Storage and SSD guidance
The published minimum PC specification calls for 70 GB of available storage. The release FAQ recommends installing the game on an SSD for a better experience, but it gives no measured FPS increase and does not claim that an SSD cures network latency. An internal SSD with room for the 70 GB installation is therefore a conditional storage choice: it is sensible when you need capacity or are currently using a hard drive, but it is not a universal lag remedy.
Console-specific performance settings
The detailed Windows driver and Graphics-menu instructions apply to PC only. Marvel Rivals’ release FAQ separately describes a stable 120 FPS High Frame Rate mode for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, and Xbox Series X. The mode requires a compatible HDMI 2.1 display with a 120 Hz refresh rate, and the published figure is a feature claim from the FAQ, not an independent test result.
PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro
- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Enable 120 Hz output.
- Restart Marvel Rivals.
- Open the game’s Graphics Settings and select HFR Mode.
If the display, cable, or television does not support the required 120 Hz and HDMI 2.1 setup, the HFR option cannot deliver the stated configuration. Menu labels can change with console software updates, so verify the current wording on the console.
Xbox Series X
- Open Settings > General > TV & Display Options.
- Set the console refresh rate to 120 Hz.
- Restart Marvel Rivals.
- Choose HFR Mode in the game’s Graphics Settings.
The release FAQ names Xbox Series X for this mode; do not transfer the claim automatically to other Xbox models.
When crashes accompany stutter or slow performance
Repeated crashes need a different escalation path from ordinary low FPS. Marvel Rivals’ technical FAQ directs players to its integrity-check and repair guide. If crashes continue, it says to enable GPU Debug Mode and reinstall the latest GPU driver, then collect the requested information when another crash occurs for support.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Run the official integrity check and repair procedure for the game installation.
- If the crash repeats, enable GPU Debug Mode as directed by the technical FAQ.
- Reinstall the latest driver for the installed GPU using clean-installation mode.
- When another crash occurs, gather the information requested by the support instructions and submit it through the official channel.
Do not casually disable security software as a first-line performance fix. The documented guidance emphasizes repair, GPU debugging, driver reinstallation, and supplying diagnostic information instead.
A practical decision table
| Symptom | Platform | First action | Trade-off or uncertainty |
|---|---|---|---|
| High latency, delayed inputs, rubber-banding | PC or console | Check broadband stability and select the lowest-latency matchmaking server | Improves connection conditions, not rendering speed; no universal router or VPN fix is established |
| Frequent frame-time hitches | PC | Clean-install the current GPU driver and set MarvelRivals to Windows High performance | Driver labels vary; the setting is recommended, not guaranteed |
| Persistently low FPS | PC | Lower texture quality or other graphics settings one group at a time | Visual quality decreases; no official uplift percentage is supplied |
| Memory-related drops, freezes, or crashes on a 16 GB-or-less system | PC | Consider Switch Shader Compilation Mode if it exists in the current launcher | Experimental; first-render stutter is possible, and six-or-fewer CPU threads may conflict with AMD FSR3 Frame Generation |
| Insufficient disk space | PC | Use the low-resolution resource pack where supported | Installation becomes smaller to some extent, but visual fidelity may be lower; FPS gain is not promised |
| Want the published 120 FPS console mode | PS5, PS5 Pro, or Xbox Series X | Set 120 Hz output, restart, and select HFR Mode | Requires a compatible HDMI 2.1, 120 Hz display and current menu support |
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling every problem “lag.” A low ping cannot compensate for a GPU that is rendering too slowly, and a graphics tweak cannot repair rubber-banding.
- Treating minimum requirements as a smooth-FPS promise. Marvel Rivals expressly says that several factors can cause slow performance even at or above minimum specifications.
- Buying hardware before identifying the bottleneck. The official material does not justify a blanket GPU, RAM, router, display, or network-service purchase for every player. Compatibility, resolution, refresh rate, current components, and budget determine whether an upgrade is appropriate.
- Assuming an SSD adds a known number of frames per second. The FAQ recommends SSD installation for a better experience but publishes no FPS uplift.
- Enabling every experimental feature at once. Shader Compilation Mode has documented first-render and CPU-thread caveats, especially when combined with AMD FSR3 Frame Generation. Change one variable and compare.
- Using PC instructions on a console. Windows driver installation and Graphics settings do not apply to PlayStation or Xbox; use the platform-specific HFR steps instead.
What to report when the problem remains
If lowering settings does not resolve a persistent slowdown, contact the official Marvel Rivals Support bot on Discord as recommended by the release FAQ. Include the platform, CPU, GPU, RAM, operating-system version, display resolution and refresh rate, whether the issue is latency or rendering, when it began, the settings changed, and a repeatable description of the slowdown. For crashes, follow the technical FAQ’s integrity-check, GPU Debug Mode, driver-reinstallation, and information-collection instructions so support receives actionable diagnostics.
