What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Cloud gaming problems are usually solved by measuring the connection to the gaming service, not by looking only at a generic download-speed result. Check bandwidth, ping, jitter, and packet loss on the provider’s own test when available; then compare Ethernet with 5 GHz Wi-Fi, remove competing traffic, and retest one change at a time. If the service path is clean, move on to the device, app or browser, display, input hardware, and possible service incidents.
The steps below separate input delay, visual stutter, blurry video, audio faults, and complete disconnects. That distinction matters because each symptom can have a different cause even when all of them are described as “cloud gaming lag.”

Start by identifying what “lag” actually means
Do not change several settings at once. First record the service, game, device, app or browser, connection type, and time of day. Note whether the problem affects one game or every game, and whether it began after a router, operating-system, driver, application, or network change.
| What you notice | What it describes | First thing to check |
|---|---|---|
| Controls react late | Input delay, usually felt between a button press and the on-screen response | Ping to the cloud provider, then Wi-Fi versus Ethernet |
| Image freezes, jumps, or skips frames | Visual stutter caused by unstable delivery, decoding, or rendering | Packet loss and jitter on the provider-specific test |
| Video becomes blocky or soft | Adaptive streaming has reduced image quality, often because available bandwidth fluctuates | Competing traffic and the selected stream resolution or frame rate |
| Sound crackles or drops | Audio packets or local playback are being interrupted | Packet loss, local CPU load, and the output device |
| The session ends or reconnects | A full connection failure, application fault, or service-side interruption | Provider status, the service test, and whether another device has the same issue |
Also compare one service with another where practical. A problem limited to one provider or one game points to a different investigation than a problem affecting every online activity in the home.

Measure the route to the cloud gaming server
A generic speed test is only a broad throughput check. It may use a different server and route from the one carrying your game stream. NVIDIA explicitly says its GeForce NOW test measures the path from your device to an NVIDIA data center, whereas ordinary speed tests use other servers. A fast result on the latter therefore does not prove that your cloud-gaming route is stable.
Run the GeForce NOW network test correctly
- Open the GeForce NOW client’s built-in network test.
- Set server location to Auto so the client can select a nearby NVIDIA data center.
- Turn off a VPN while testing; NVIDIA advises this so the client can select the appropriate data center and measure the normal route.
- Record bandwidth, packet loss, jitter, and ping. Repeat the test at the time you normally play, especially if the fault appears only in the evening.
NVIDIA describes the test and its metrics in its network-test instructions. The result applies to that provider, location, device, and test moment; it is not a universal rating for every cloud gaming service.
Understand the four measurements
- Bandwidth is the amount of stream data that can be delivered per second. A higher number helps sustain a high-resolution stream, but it does not describe delay or reliability.
- Packet loss means some data packets never arrive. NVIDIA characterizes no packet loss as good and a high percentage as bad. Lost packets can produce freezes, visual corruption, audio gaps, or a forced reconnect.
- Jitter is variation in packet arrival time. Even when average ping looks acceptable, high jitter makes the stream arrive unevenly and can appear as stutter.
- Ping is round-trip time between the device and data center. Lower ping reduces the wait between an input and its visible result. NVIDIA summarizes the user impact this way: “A low ping ensures you do not see a delay when you press a button on your mouse, or gamepad, to see something change on screen.”
Do not substitute a download-speed number for these three quality indicators. A connection can have ample bandwidth yet still suffer from packet loss, jitter, or a long route to the selected data center.

- Cat 8 Speed, Cat 5/5e Value Enjoy Cat 8 Ethernet cable performance at a Cat 5/5e-level value. With up to 40Gbps speed and 2000MHz bandwidth, this high speed internet cable delivers more bandwidth than standard Cat 5 and Cat 5e cables, helping support smooth gaming, streaming, video calls, large file transfers and everyday wired network use.
- 40Gbps Speed, Wide Compatibility This Cat 8 Ethernet cable supports up to 40Gbps data transfer and 2000MHz bandwidth for fast, reliable internet performance. Standard RJ45 connectors are backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6, Cat6a and Cat5e devices, including routers, modems, switches, gaming PCs, PS5, PS4, Xbox, smart TVs, laptops and printers.
- Stable U/FTP Shielding Each of the 4 twisted pairs is individually wrapped with aluminum foil to help reduce crosstalk, noise, and signal interference. Combined with RJ45 connectors on both ends, the U/FTP design helps maintain cleaner signal transmission for a stable and reliable wired network connection.
- Nylon Braided Durability The nylon braided jacket adds everyday durability while keeping the cable flexible and easy to route. Reinforced construction helps the cord handle bending, pulling and frequent plugging, making it a reliable choice for desks, gaming rooms, home offices and long-term network setups.
- 50ft Reach for More Setups The 50 ft length makes it easier to connect devices across rooms, along walls, under desks or around corners. Great for router-to-PC connections, modem-to-TV setups, gaming consoles, workstations, printers and other home network equipment that needs a longer Ethernet cable.
- Test wired Ethernet. Connect the gaming device directly to the router with Ethernet if both support it. If the device lacks a network port, a compatible adapter may be needed; check the device and adapter port requirements before buying one. Ethernet is a useful comparison even if you ultimately return to Wi-Fi.
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi when Ethernet is impractical. Select the 5 GHz network on both the router and device. NVIDIA and Xbox both recommend 5 GHz Wi-Fi for their services.
- Reduce distance and obstructions. Move the device closer to the router and avoid placing either unit behind dense furniture, inside a cabinet, or beside sources of radio interference.
- Choose a less congested channel. Nearby networks can compete for airtime. NVIDIA advises using a 5 GHz channel with less interference when the current channel is crowded.
- Pause competing traffic. Stop large downloads, cloud backups, video streams, uploads, broadcasts, and other high-volume activity on the home network while testing. A connection that works alone but fails during these activities is showing a capacity or queueing problem, not necessarily a fault with the gaming service.
- Retest at the problem time. If evenings are bad and mornings are fine, keep both results. Time-dependent behavior can indicate household congestion or a changing route, while a constant fault is more likely to involve the local link, device, or service configuration.
NVIDIA’s troubleshooting guidance covers these steps in its recommendations for reducing lag and improving GeForce NOW streaming quality. A new router is not automatically the answer: placement, band selection, interference, and competing traffic should be tested first.
Match your connection to the service and stream mode
Provider requirements are service-specific guidance, not a guarantee of perfect latency or uninterrupted play. Resolution, frame rate, platform, location, and device all affect the target.
GeForce NOW requirements
NVIDIA’s current GeForce NOW requirements page lists these bandwidth figures for supported platform configurations. The exact entry depends on the device and selected stream mode, and NVIDIA specifies less than 80 ms network latency from an NVIDIA data center.
| Stream target | Published bandwidth guidance | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| HD up to 60 FPS | 15 Mbps | Applies to supported GeForce NOW platform configurations |
| 1080p at 60 FPS | 25 Mbps | Platform-specific table entry |
| Selected QHD modes at 120 FPS | 35 Mbps | Only for configurations that offer the mode |
| 4K at 120 FPS | 45 Mbps | Requires a supported configuration and display path |
| Selected high-frame-rate or 5K modes | Higher rates are listed | Use the current entry for your exact platform and mode |
Consult NVIDIA’s current GeForce NOW system requirements for the device-specific table. The less-than-80-ms figure is a GeForce NOW requirement, not a universal cloud-gaming standard, and it does not replace checks for packet loss or jitter.

Xbox Cloud Gaming requirements
Xbox currently publishes a different baseline. Its Cloud Gaming FAQ states that mobile play requires at least 10 Mbps, while some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality. Xbox recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi and says performance is affected by the internet connection, user location, device, and other factors.
Do not apply GeForce NOW’s bandwidth table or its 80-ms figure to Xbox Cloud Gaming. The reviewed Xbox guidance does not publish those same thresholds. Treat each provider’s figures as a starting requirement for its own service, then judge the actual route with the available test.
When the network test looks healthy
If bandwidth, ping, jitter, and packet loss look stable while the game still stutters, test the rest of the playback chain.
- Update the client, browser, device, and graphics software. Use a supported version of the provider’s app or browser, install pending operating-system updates, and update graphics drivers where the device supports them.
- Close unnecessary local applications. Browsers with many tabs, recording tools, overlays, synchronisation clients, and other CPU- or GPU-heavy programs can interfere with video decoding even when the network is sound.
- Compare another device on the same network. If a second device plays smoothly, investigate the first device’s decoding, drivers, display connection, or peripherals rather than immediately changing the internet plan.
- Compare the same device on another network where practical. A clean result elsewhere points back to the original network path; an identical fault suggests the device, client, or service.
- Check whether the problem is game-specific. If one title fails while others are stable, note that difference before changing system-wide settings. It can indicate a title-specific session or compatibility issue.
For a narrow GeForce NOW mouse-related stutter, NVIDIA specifically suggests lowering the mouse polling rate to 125 Hz. This is a targeted peripheral test, not a general cure for stream stutter and not a reason to change polling rate when the symptom is unrelated to mouse movement.

Fix the symptom you actually have
Input delay or “high ping”
Start with the provider test’s ping value, then run the Ethernet comparison. A lower ping on Ethernet identifies Wi-Fi as part of the delay; no improvement means the extra round-trip time may be outside the home, tied to data-center distance, or caused by the service route. Keep server location on Auto for GeForce NOW while testing and do not use a VPN in the measurement.
Input delay can coexist with a clear-looking picture. In that case, reducing stream resolution will not necessarily reduce the underlying round-trip delay. Focus on the route, data-center selection, and local interference first.
Visual stutter or periodic freezes
Check packet loss and jitter before buying hardware. A stream that arrives in bursts can stutter despite a high download result. Pause household traffic, move closer to the router, select a cleaner 5 GHz channel, and compare Ethernet. If the wired and wireless tests are equally unstable, the issue may be upstream of the home network or at the provider.

Adaptive streaming lowers image quality when it cannot sustain the selected mode. Confirm that the measured bandwidth meets the service’s guidance for the chosen resolution and frame rate, then stop competing traffic. A high-resolution mode needs more capacity than an HD stream; use the provider’s current platform table rather than a generic “fast internet” label.

Audio crackling or dropouts
First compare audio faults with packet-loss results and with another output device. If the stream test is clean, close applications that consume CPU resources, verify the selected output device, and update the client and operating system. If audio and video fail together, treat it as a stream-delivery or decoding problem; if only audio fails, local playback deserves priority.
Complete disconnects
Record the exact time, game, device, and error message. Run the provider test immediately after a disconnect and check whether another device on the same network can use the service. A single service failing while other internet activity remains normal can involve routing beyond the home, the chosen data center, client compatibility, or a provider incident. Those are possibilities, not proof of any one cause.
Do not assume that changing DNS, forwarding ports, installing a “gaming optimizer,” or turning on a VPN will fix a disconnect. Apply such changes only when the provider’s current support instructions address the specific error. NVIDIA’s support material includes a ports heading, but the available guidance does not establish blanket port-forwarding settings for every household.

When Ethernet, Wi-Fi changes, or new equipment make sense
| Option | Use it when | Limit to remember |
|---|---|---|
| Ethernet cable | The device and router can be connected, or you need a controlled comparison with Wi-Fi | It requires a suitable port or adapter and cannot repair upstream routing or a provider outage |
| 5 GHz Wi-Fi | Ethernet is impractical and both router and device support 5 GHz | Range, walls, and channel interference can still weaken it |
| Generic speed test | You want a quick broad throughput check | It may use a different server and route from the cloud gaming session |
| Provider-specific test | The service offers one, especially GeForce NOW | Results apply to that provider, route, device, and test conditions |
| Higher internet tier or new router | Testing shows insufficient capacity or a local Wi-Fi limitation | It may not change latency, packet loss outside the home, data-center distance, decoding, or service incidents |
Buy equipment only after the comparison identifies a local limitation. If Ethernet is smooth and Wi-Fi is not, a cable is a defensible fix; if both are poor, spending on a router or faster plan without further evidence may leave the real cause untouched.
A practical troubleshooting record
Use a short log so each test answers a question rather than creating a new variable.
- Write down the provider, game, device, client or browser, resolution, frame rate, and connection type.
- Record bandwidth, ping, jitter, and packet loss from the provider test, along with the date and time.
- Repeat with one change: Ethernet, 5 GHz, a closer position, a cleaner channel, or competing traffic paused.
- Note whether the symptom is input delay, visual stutter, blur, audio trouble, or a disconnect.
- Compare another game, device, or network only after the first controlled result is recorded.
This log lets support staff see whether the fault follows the service, the home network, or one device. It also prevents a temporary improvement from being mistaken for proof that a new router, VPN, or software utility solved the underlying problem.
How to decide what to do next
- Provider test shows packet loss or high jitter: test Ethernet, pause competing traffic, improve 5 GHz placement and channel selection, and repeat at the affected time.
- Ping is high but loss and jitter are stable: keep the test on the provider’s normal server selection, compare another available location or service where offered, and recognize that distance and upstream routing may be outside your home.
- Bandwidth is below the service’s mode requirement: lower the stream target temporarily or address demonstrated household capacity limits before expecting high-resolution play.
- All network measures are healthy: update the client and device, close local applications, compare another device or network, and investigate decoding, display, input hardware, or a service incident.
- Only one provider fails: preserve the test results and error time for that provider’s support; do not generalize the failure to every cloud gaming service.
The reliable principle is diagnostic rather than promotional: measure the actual service path, stabilize the local link, match the provider’s own requirements, and only then consider hardware or plan changes. No single speed threshold, cable, router, or software setting guarantees lag-free cloud gaming.
