Check both upload and download speeds, move the Android device to a stable 5 GHz Wi-Fi network when possible, connect the PS4 to the router with Ethernet if you can, stop competing downloads, and then verify Remote Play, account, software, rest-mode, and NAT settings. PlayStation lists 5 Mbps upload and download as the baseline and 15 Mbps in each direction for best performance, but reaching those figures does not prove that latency, packet loss, or Wi-Fi interference is under control.
Identify what is actually failing
Different symptoms point to different parts of the connection. A consistently soft or blocky picture usually indicates that Remote Play is reducing video quality to survive limited throughput. Brief pauses, audio crackle, or controls that feel delayed are more often associated with interference, congestion, or unstable latency. A complete disconnect means the session lost reachability to the console or the service, so setup, NAT, or a temporary network outage must be considered alongside raw speed.

Write down when the failure occurs before changing settings. Does it begin immediately, only after several minutes, or whenever another person starts a download? Does the Android device lose connectivity in other apps at the same time? This distinction prevents you from changing PS4 settings when the phone’s Wi-Fi is the real problem.
Check the Android connection outside Remote Play
- Leave Remote Play and open several ordinary websites or another network-dependent app on the Android device.
- If those apps also stall, disconnect and reconnect Wi-Fi, move closer to the access point, and test again. A general Wi-Fi fault should be handled as a home-network or carrier problem rather than an app-specific fault.
- If other apps work normally, continue with the endpoint and Remote Play checks below.
Run a speed test without treating it as a verdict
Use a speed-test app or website on Android, then run the PS4’s built-in test at Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection. Record upload and download results for both endpoints. PlayStation’s mobile guidance states a minimum of 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download, and recommends at least 15 Mbps upload and 15 Mbps download for best performance. These are guidance figures, not a latency limit, packet-loss test, or guarantee of smooth play. A connection can exceed 15 Mbps while suffering from radio interference, queueing delay, or short outages.

Stabilize the Android-to-network link
Prefer 5 GHz Wi-Fi when the signal is strong
PlayStation recommends using 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Remote Play device when available. The band commonly has less congestion than 2.4 GHz, but its signal loses strength more quickly through walls and floors. Select the 5 GHz network in Android’s Wi-Fi settings only if the device remains close enough for a stable signal. A weak 5 GHz signal can be worse than a strong, uncongested alternative.
During a test, stand near the router, connect Android to the 5 GHz network, and start a session with household traffic paused. If the stream improves in that position but deteriorates in the usual room, the issue is coverage or interference rather than the PS4 game itself. Repositioning the access point or the Android device may be more effective than changing Remote Play options.
Remove competing traffic
- Pause downloads, cloud backups, operating-system updates, and video uploads on Android.
- Ask other users to stop large downloads or high-bitrate streaming for the duration of the test.
- Temporarily idle devices that are continuously transferring data, then add them back one at a time to find the source of congestion.
Remote Play is interactive: a short burst of upload or download traffic can make controls feel delayed even when an averaged speed test still looks adequate. Test the connection with the household in its normal state after the clean test so you know whether congestion is a practical limitation.

Restart Android before repeating the session
Close the Remote Play app, restart the Android device, reconnect to the intended Wi-Fi network, and try again. This clears a transient radio or app state without changing router configuration. If Wi-Fi remains unreliable in every app, contact the internet service provider for help with the wireless service rather than treating Remote Play as the root cause.

Improve the PS4-to-router path
Use an Ethernet cable as a diagnostic and remedy
If the console is close enough to the router, connect the PS4’s LAN port to the router with an Ethernet cable. This removes the PS4’s local Wi-Fi radio from the test and often makes it easier to tell which side is unstable. It does not wire the Android device: Android will still use its own Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection to reach the session.
Run Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection again after wiring the console. If Remote Play becomes stable while Android’s connection is unchanged, the former PS4 Wi-Fi link was contributing to the problem. Ethernet cannot correct an overloaded internet connection or a weak Android signal, so keep testing both segments separately.
If the PS4 must stay on Wi-Fi
- Move the PS4 and router closer together.
- Reduce walls, cabinets, and other obstructions between them.
- Avoid placing the console immediately beside sources of radio interference or inside enclosed furniture.
- Repeat the PS4 network test from the console’s normal location, not only beside the router.
These changes target the console’s local link. They are optional alternatives when a cable cannot be run, not a substitute for improving Android’s connection.

A fast network cannot compensate for a console that is not discoverable, is signed in to a different account, or cannot wake from rest mode. Check the following on the PS4 before attempting another session.

Enable Remote Play and update the console
- Open Settings > Remote Play Connection Settings and make sure Enable Remote Play is selected.
- Install any available PS4 system-software update, then restart the console if the update requests it.
- Sign in on the PS4 with the same PlayStation account used by the Remote Play app on Android.
Account matching matters: using a different account can look like a connection failure even though the network is healthy.
Activate the PS4 as the primary console
For PS4 Remote Play, PlayStation says the console must be activated as the primary PS4 for the account. Check Settings > Account Management > Activate as Your Primary PS4. If the option indicates that the console is already primary, leave it enabled. If another PS4 is primary for the account, activation status must be resolved before relying on Remote Play from this console.
Allow the PS4 to stay reachable in rest mode
If you want to start a session while the PS4 is resting, open Settings > Power Save > Set Features Available in Rest Mode and enable both Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS4 from Network. The console must be left in rest mode rather than fully powered off. If it is already on, these rest-mode options do not repair a separate Wi-Fi or NAT problem, but they are required for wake-from-rest use.
Separate an app problem from a network problem
Restart in a controlled order
- Close Remote Play on Android.
- Confirm the PS4 is on, or in correctly configured rest mode.
- Restart the Android device and reconnect it to the tested network.
- Open Remote Play and sign in with the account used on the PS4.
Try one session with downloads paused and the Android device near the router. If that works, restore normal conditions one change at a time. This identifies whether distance, household traffic, or a startup state triggers the failure.

Reinstall Remote Play when restarting is not enough
If the same device still fails after the controlled restart, uninstall the Remote Play app, restart Android, install the current version from the official app store, and sign in again. Reinstallation is a reversible way to replace damaged app files. It does not repair a weak signal, an incorrect PS4 account, or a restrictive NAT, so repeat the network and setup checks if the problem returns immediately.
Do not treat unverified Android-specific tweaks—such as changing video codecs, clearing unrelated system data, or disabling battery protections—as official fixes for this problem. They can introduce new behavior without addressing the two network paths that Remote Play actually uses.

Android can use mobile data for Remote Play when the carrier and plan permit it. First test the session with Wi-Fi disabled in a location with a strong cellular signal. If mobile data works while home Wi-Fi fails, the comparison points toward the local wireless network; if both fail, continue checking the PS4, account, and NAT path.

Check the carrier’s allowance, throttling policy, and tethering restrictions before using it for a long session. A temporary cellular test can isolate Wi-Fi trouble, but it is not proof that cellular latency will remain stable everywhere or throughout a full game.

Check NAT type and ports only after basic fixes
Read the NAT type in Remote Play
Open the Remote Play app’s settings and inspect the displayed NAT type. PlayStation cautions that NAT Type 3 may prevent Remote Play. NAT is a reachability condition, not a measure of speed: changing it will not cure radio interference or a congested household connection.
Understand the UDP 8572 requirement
PlayStation identifies UDP port 8572 as used by Remote Play. If the symptom is an inability to connect, repeated failure to discover the PS4 from outside the home, or a NAT Type 3 warning, port reachability may be relevant. If the symptom is only occasional stutter on an otherwise connected session, opening a port is unlikely to be the first or safest answer.
Router port changes are an advanced step. Do not guess at unrelated ports, expose additional services, or assume that forwarding UDP 8572 guarantees a fix. If you are unfamiliar with NAT or port-forwarding screens, ask your internet service provider, router manufacturer, or mobile carrier for guidance. They can account for carrier-grade NAT, double-NAT arrangements, and router-specific menus that a generic instruction cannot resolve.

A complete troubleshooting sequence
- Classify the issue as quality degradation, intermittent stutter, or a full disconnect.
- Test other Android apps to determine whether Wi-Fi is generally unstable.
- Measure Android upload and download, then run the PS4’s Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection.
- Compare each result with PlayStation’s 5 Mbps baseline and 15 Mbps best-performance recommendation, while remembering that speed alone does not measure latency or packet loss.
- Pause downloads and heavy household traffic; restart Android and retry near the router.
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi for Android when the signal remains strong.
- Connect the PS4 to the router with Ethernet, or move the console and router closer and remove obstructions if Wi-Fi is unavoidable.
- Confirm Remote Play is enabled, PS4 software is current, both devices use the same account, and the PS4 is activated as the account’s primary console.
- For wake-from-rest sessions, enable internet connection and network power-on in the PS4’s rest-mode settings.
- Restart and, if necessary, reinstall the Remote Play app.
- Inspect NAT type; investigate UDP 8572 and seek provider or router support only when the symptoms indicate a reachability problem.
- Use mobile data as a controlled comparison only after checking its allowance and carrier restrictions.
What a successful fix should look like
After each change, repeat the same short game segment from the same location. A genuine improvement is a repeatable reduction in freezes, control delay, or disconnects—not a single good speed-test result. Keep the change that addresses the failing segment: a wired PS4 connection for console-side Wi-Fi instability, a closer 5 GHz Android connection for phone-side interference, reduced traffic for congestion, or corrected account and rest-mode settings for discovery failures.
If no combination of stable local links, correct setup, current software, and acceptable NAT produces a reliable session, record the PS4 test result, Android network type, NAT type, time of failure, and whether other apps lose connectivity. That information gives the ISP, router maker, or carrier a useful starting point instead of an unspecific report that Remote Play is “laggy.”
