Start by deciding whether the problem affects only your Android phone or many people in the meeting. A single affected participant usually needs local fixes—connection stability, app permissions, device load, Meet settings, or audio routing. If several participants have the same lag, freezing, or audio symptoms, the organizer or administrator should investigate shared Wi-Fi or internet paths, firewalls, traffic inspection, quality-of-service (QoS) rules, and Meet configuration. Work through the local checks first, then escalate with precise meeting and device details.
1. Identify whether the fault is local or widespread
Only your Android phone is affected
Ask another participant whether the meeting is clear for them. If everyone else is normal, concentrate on your phone and its immediate network path. Check, in order, your Wi-Fi or mobile connection, Meet microphone permission, the selected microphone and speaker, Bluetooth routing, app state, and available device resources. These checks are reversible and do not require an administrator.

Several participants have the same problem
When multiple people report frozen video, severe delay, robotic audio, or repeated disconnects, the cause may be outside any one phone. The organizer or Google Workspace administrator should identify the affected users, their mobile platforms, the meeting time and link, and whether everyone is on the same office, school, or home network. Shared network congestion, firewall or traffic-inspection devices, incorrect QoS handling, and Meet configuration can affect a large call simultaneously.

2. Use this symptom-to-fix map before changing settings
| What you see | Likely scope | First action |
|---|---|---|
| Only your video is delayed, pixelated, or stuttering | Phone or local connection | Check connection stability, move to 5 GHz Wi-Fi if available, close other apps, and turn off your video temporarily. |
| The Meet screen stops responding or the call freezes | Phone load, unstable network, or shared network issue | Close other apps, rejoin from the Meet Android app, and compare your experience with another participant. |
| People cannot hear you | Microphone permission, mute state, selected input, or Bluetooth routing | Confirm you are unmuted, verify the selected microphone, and check Android microphone permission. |
| You cannot hear anyone or sound comes from the wrong device | Speaker selection, phone volume, or Bluetooth routing | Select the intended speaker in Meet, raise device volume, and reconnect or disconnect Bluetooth. |
| Echo affects the meeting | Open phone speaker and microphone, nearby devices, or a peripheral | Use a headset with a microphone, lower speaker volume, and mute when you are not speaking. |
| Many users report the same symptoms | Shared network or organization configuration | Have the administrator inspect network paths, traffic inspection, QoS, and Meet settings. |
3. Fix lag, freezing, and video stutter on Android
Check stability and latency over time
A single speed-test result can look excellent while the connection still drops packets or develops latency during the call. Observe whether the problem appears at regular intervals, when other people start using the network, or whenever you move around the building. If possible, compare the same meeting on another connection, such as a different Wi-Fi network or mobile data. Google Meet Help states: “Bandwidth issues are a major cause of poor video quality.” Stability over the duration of the meeting matters more than a one-time peak download speed.
Move from congested 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi to 5 GHz
If your router offers separate bands, connect the phone to its 5 GHz network when you are within reliable range. The 2.4 GHz band commonly has more interference from neighboring networks and household devices. A 5 GHz connection can reduce congestion, although walls and distance can weaken it more quickly. If the 5 GHz signal is unstable in your location, test the router’s other band rather than assuming one is always better.
Temporarily disable a VPN
Disconnect a VPN for one test call, then rejoin the meeting. A VPN can add an extra route and encryption overhead, and its server may be far from the Meet media path. If the call improves immediately, provide the VPN name and connection location to your administrator or VPN support team instead of leaving the VPN disabled where policy requires it. Treat this as a diagnostic comparison, not a permanent security recommendation.

Close competing apps and reduce the phone’s workload
Open Android’s recent-apps view and close video players, games, screen recorders, large downloads, and other apps using the camera, microphone, processor, or network. Keep the phone connected to power if a long meeting is causing heat or battery-saving behavior. Do not run another video call or upload in the background while testing Meet.
Turn off video when the phone or network is struggling
In the meeting, tap the camera control to stop sending video and keep audio enabled. This reduces the amount of data your phone must encode and upload. If video is essential, lower the number of other tasks on the phone first and test again. Joining from the Meet mobile app rather than a browser tab is another useful comparison because it removes browser tabs and extensions from the path.

Try phone audio as an isolation test
When the meeting offers a phone-audio option, use it temporarily. If the telephone audio is clear while app audio or video remains poor, the problem is more likely the phone’s data path, app state, or media routing than the meeting itself. If telephone audio is also unusable for several participants, report the wider pattern to the organizer.
Open Meet’s in-call diagnostics
When Meet displays a red dot on More options, tap More options > Troubleshooting & help. Follow the recommendations shown for that call. Google says the red dot remains for five minutes or until you open More options; it appears once per day even if the underlying issue continues. Because the notice is not a continuous monitor, use it together with your own observations of when lag starts and stops.
4. Restore a missing microphone on Android
Confirm that Companion mode is not active
Companion mode is intended for joining a meeting without using the device’s audio. If you entered that mode accidentally, your microphone and speaker behavior will not match a normal audio participant. Leave the meeting and rejoin in the standard Meet mode before changing more settings.
Leave and rejoin the meeting
A fresh join can rebuild a failed media session and re-enumerate the phone’s microphone and speaker. Note the meeting time and any error message before leaving if an administrator may need those details. Rejoin from the current Meet Android app rather than an old browser tab.
Check mute state and the selected microphone
Tap the microphone control and make sure it shows that you are unmuted. Open the in-call audio controls and select the phone microphone or the connected headset microphone you actually intend to use. If another app is using the microphone, close that app and rejoin. Speak while watching for the input indicator; if it never reacts, continue with Android permission and hardware checks.

- Tap Permissions and choose Microphone.
- Select Allow only while using the app.
- Return to Meet, leave the meeting if necessary, and rejoin.
Android menu wording can vary by phone manufacturer and Android release, but the permission must allow Meet to use the microphone while the app is active. If the permission was previously denied, changing it in system settings is more reliable than repeatedly tapping the in-call mute button.

5. Fix silent, misdirected, or low-volume Meet audio
Select the intended speaker in Meet
Open Meet’s audio controls and choose the output you want: the phone speaker, wired headset, or Bluetooth device. Then raise the phone’s media volume with the hardware buttons. The ringtone or alarm volume is not necessarily the same as media volume, so test while another participant is speaking.
Use the blue speaker indicator on participant tiles
When you are unsure whether a participant is producing audio, look for the blue speaker indicator on that person’s tile while they speak. If the indicator responds but you hear nothing, your output selection or device volume is the likely fault. If it never responds and other participants also cannot hear that person, ask them to check their microphone, mute state, and permission.
Reconnect Bluetooth deliberately
Disconnect the Bluetooth headset or speaker, wait briefly, and connect it again before rejoining Meet. Then reselect it in Meet’s audio controls. Bluetooth devices can remain connected for media playback while Meet continues using the phone microphone or speaker, creating the impression that Meet audio has disappeared. Google also warns that some Bluetooth headsets perform well for ordinary calls but poorly with Meet; there is no published Meet-specific compatibility matrix covering every Android phone and headset.
Compare built-in, Bluetooth, and USB-C audio
| Audio path | Useful diagnostic | Limit to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Phone microphone and speaker | Fastest baseline; disconnect every peripheral and test a short call. | Open speaker and microphone can create echo, especially in a quiet room or near another participant. |
| Bluetooth headset | Tests whether the phone’s built-in hardware is the source of the problem; reconnect before testing. | Performance varies by headset and phone, and some models handle Meet poorly despite working for ordinary calls. |
| USB-C wired headset with microphone | Provides a direct audio path that can isolate Bluetooth routing and radio interference. | Compatibility depends on the Android phone, USB-C audio support, adapter, and headset; verify those before buying or using one. |
6. Stop echo, robotic speech, and audio stutter
Use a headset with a microphone
A headset separates the incoming audio from the phone’s microphone and is the most direct way to reduce acoustic echo. A USB-C wired headset with a microphone is a practical test when Bluetooth is unreliable, provided the phone supports that accessory. If the headset has its own mute control, check both the headset and Meet mute states.

Lower speaker volume and mute when silent
Reduce the phone speaker volume until speech remains intelligible without spilling strongly into the microphone. Tap mute whenever you are not speaking, especially in a room with several devices connected to the same meeting. Ask nearby participants to do the same; two open microphones and speakers in one room can create a feedback loop that no single phone setting fully resolves.
Separate multiple devices in the same room
If you join on both a phone and another device, keep audio active on only one of them. The second device can remain connected for viewing or screen control with its microphone and speaker disabled. This is a common cause of echo that looks like a network problem.
7. What administrators should check when a large call is affected
Collect a consistent incident record
- Which participants were affected and which were not.
- Android platform or phone model for each affected mobile user.
- Meet app version and whether the user joined through the Android app or another client.
- Meeting date, time, duration, and meeting details.
- Exact symptom: video delay, total freeze, robotic audio, missing microphone, wrong speaker, or echo.
- Connection type and location, including office Wi-Fi, home Wi-Fi, mobile data, VPN, and whether users shared a network segment.
- Whether disabling video, VPN, or Bluetooth changed the result.
Inspect shared network paths
Review congestion, packet loss, latency variation, and Wi-Fi access-point load during the affected period rather than relying on an idle speed test. Check whether traffic-inspection devices, firewalls, proxies, or VPN gateways are delaying or altering Meet media traffic. Confirm that QoS rules prioritize real-time media correctly and that a recent network policy change did not coincide with the incident.
Use Google’s organization guidance for recurring incidents
Google’s administrator guidance for large organizations asks teams to identify the affected person and mobile platform and provides network-troubleshooting steps for organization-wide problems. Use that guidance when the same symptom appears across many users, sites, or meetings. A local phone fix cannot correct a shared firewall or QoS failure.
Escalate with evidence, not a general complaint
When contacting support, provide the incident record, the number of affected and unaffected participants, network locations, app and platform details, and the results of controlled tests such as VPN off, video off, alternate Wi-Fi, phone audio, and Bluetooth disconnected. This lets support distinguish an Android endpoint issue from a network-path or service-configuration issue.
8. Interpreting the published 3.2 Mbps figure
Google Workspace Help’s 2026 Meet hardware and network material lists a 3.2 Mbps outbound bandwidth requirement in that Meet hardware/network context. Do not treat that number as a universal minimum for every Android phone, meeting size, video layout, or network condition. Actual quality also depends on latency, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference, device processing capacity, camera resolution, and how many media streams the call is handling. Use the figure as a qualified planning reference, not as proof that a phone with a one-time 3.2 Mbps result will perform well throughout a large call.
9. A short recovery checklist
- Ask whether one phone or many participants are affected.
- For one phone, check connection stability, move to 5 GHz Wi-Fi when practical, disable VPN temporarily, and close competing apps.
- Turn off video or test phone audio to reduce load and isolate the failing path.
- Open More options > Troubleshooting & help when the red diagnostic dot appears.
- For missing audio, leave Companion mode, rejoin, verify mute state, select the intended microphone and speaker, and raise media volume.
- Set Android Settings > Apps > Meet > Permissions > Microphone > Allow only while using the app.
- Reconnect Bluetooth; if problems continue, test the built-in path or a compatible USB-C wired headset with microphone.
- For echo, use a headset, lower speaker volume, mute while silent, and disable audio on any second device in the room.
- For widespread symptoms, give the organizer or administrator the affected-user, platform, app-version, meeting, and network details for shared-path investigation.
What to expect from these fixes
The fastest improvements usually come from correcting the selected audio device, granting microphone permission, reconnecting Bluetooth, removing a congested Wi-Fi or VPN path, and reducing video or background workload. If those changes help only one phone, keep the incident local. If they help nobody and several participants remain affected, stop changing individual handsets and move the investigation to the shared network and Meet administration layer.
