Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFix phone game-streaming stutter by identifying which part of the stream is failing before changing settings. A stream has two network hops (PC to router and router to phone), plus game rendering, video encoding, and phone decoding. Use the streaming app’s performance overlay, then test the network, stream load, phone decoder, and host game one at a time.
The fastest isolation test is to connect the PC to the router with Ethernet, put the phone on a nearby 5 GHz network, and try a low-demand 720p30 stream. If that is smooth, raise quality gradually. If it still stutters while network time is stable, investigate phone decoding or the PC/game.

What causes lag when a PC game is streamed to a phone?
Remote-play video is produced on the gaming PC, sent to the router, transmitted over Wi-Fi or Ethernet to the phone, decoded by the phone, and displayed while your controls travel back to the PC. A fault at any stage can look like “lag,” but the fixes differ.
- Network delay or loss: congestion, weak 5 GHz signal, interference, or a wireless PC connection can create latency spikes, freezes, and dropped frames.
- Excessive stream load: a high resolution, frame rate, or bitrate can exceed the network’s available capacity or the encoder’s ability to deliver frames on time.
- Host performance: the game may already be missing frames, or the PC may be short on CPU/GPU resources for simultaneous rendering and encoding.
- Phone decoding: an older or busy phone may not decode the incoming H.264 video smoothly, even when the network is stable.
- Game-specific behavior: one title can have synchronization or input issues that do not occur in the client’s desktop or another game.
Do not apply a network fix to a decoder problem or reduce graphics settings when the overlay shows network-time spikes. The diagnostic sequence below keeps those causes separate.

Start with the performance overlay
Begin a stream and turn on the client’s streaming performance overlay, graph, or statistics panel. The exact indicators vary by app and platform; Moonlight notes that latency and frame-drop statistics are not exposed identically everywhere.
- Launch the game through Steam Remote Play/Steam Link or Moonlight.
- Enable the client’s performance display. Look for network time or latency, dropped frames, decode time, and any host or render indicators the app provides.
- Play until the stutter occurs, then watch which value changes at the same moment.
- Record a simple baseline: resolution, frame rate, bitrate, whether the PC is wired, the phone’s Wi-Fi band, and the observed symptom.
Valve says large spikes in variable network time commonly coincide with stuttering or freezing. If the Steam overlay shows those spikes, prioritize the network path before changing graphics settings. A smooth network-time graph with high decode time points toward the phone; a smooth network and decode path with uneven frame delivery points toward the host or game.
Test the two-part network path
There are two separate links to test: the gaming PC to the router, and the router to the phone. A fast internet connection does not repair a congested or weak local link; remote play normally travels across your home network.
Recommended Free Tools
Wire the gaming PC to the router
Connect the PC directly to the router with Ethernet if practical. Valve’s Steam Remote Play FAQ states: “We recommend using a wired network for the best streaming experience.” Moonlight’s setup guidance likewise recommends a wired PC-to-router connection where possible.
This test is valuable even if you ultimately use Wi-Fi. If stutter disappears when the PC is wired, the PC’s wireless link, not the phone, was competing for airtime or experiencing interference. Use a cable long enough to avoid an improvised, loose connection, and verify that the PC reports an Ethernet connection before retesting.
Put the phone on 5 GHz near the access point
Join the router’s 5 GHz band and test in the same room or close to the access point. Valve explains that 5 GHz is typically less congested than 2.4 GHz, but its shorter range means walls and distance can still reduce signal quality. Moonlight recommends a good 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) or Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) client connection.
During the test, pause large downloads, cloud backups, video streams, and other busy wireless devices. Keep the phone stationary. If moving close to the router fixes the problem, distance or interference is the likely constraint; a new router is not automatically required.

Interpret the network result
| Overlay or test result | Likely cause | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Network-time spikes coincide with freezes | Local congestion, interference, weak signal, or a wireless PC link | Wire the PC, use 5 GHz near the router, pause competing traffic, then retest |
| Stutter improves only after lowering bitrate | The stream is exceeding available network capacity | Keep the lower bitrate or increase it gradually until the spikes return |
| Network remains stable in both locations | Phone decoding, host performance, or game behavior | Continue with the load, decoder, and host tests below |
These are diagnostic outcomes, not guarantees. A 5 GHz connection can still be poor at range, and Ethernet removes one wireless variable without proving every other part of the network is healthy.

Reduce stream demand to isolate capacity limits
Lower the stream bitrate first, then test a conservative resolution and frame rate. Moonlight’s troubleshooting guidance specifically suggests 720p at 30 frames per second as a low-requirement test. This is a troubleshooting setting, not a universal ideal configuration.
- Reduce the client’s bitrate limit or quality preset.
- Set the stream to 1280×720 at 30 FPS where those controls are available.
- Replay the same scene for several minutes and watch the overlay.
- If it is smooth, raise only one variable at a time: bitrate, then resolution, then frame rate.
- Stop increasing when network-time spikes, dropped frames, or visible judder returns.
A smooth 720p30 result demonstrates that the previous stream required more capacity than the tested path could deliver. It does not identify whether the limit was Wi-Fi airtime, the host encoder, or the phone decoder by itself, so keep the network and decode indicators in view.
Why gradual increases matter
Changing resolution, FPS, and bitrate simultaneously hides the threshold you are trying to find. For example, return to 720p30, raise bitrate until the overlay becomes unstable, then return to the last stable value. Repeat at 1080p30, and only then try a higher frame rate if the phone and game remain smooth. Keep a note of each stable combination so you can restore it after testing.
Check phone hardware decoding
Hardware video decoding is a major part of a responsive client. Moonlight’s setup documentation says H.264 hardware decoding is important, and Steam warns that streaming can perform poorly on older systems without hardware-accelerated H.264 decoding. Newer, faster client devices are generally more likely to decode smoothly, but neither project specifies one phone model as a requirement.
- Open the streaming app’s video or decoder settings and confirm that hardware or accelerated decoding is selected when the option exists.
- Update the app and the phone’s operating system through their normal distribution channels.
- Close demanding background apps and remove battery-saver restrictions that may throttle sustained decoding.
- Repeat the 720p30 test. Compare decode-time or dropped-frame indicators, not just the feel of controls.
- If software decoding is the only available mode and remains unstable at low settings, test a different, newer phone before buying networking equipment.
Do not infer a decoder fault solely from input delay. If video frames are arriving late because of network spikes, the phone can appear slow while its decoder is healthy. The overlay and the controlled low-load test distinguish those cases.
Check the PC and game settings
When network and phone decoding look stable, inspect the host. Valve recommends at least a quad-core CPU for the PC running the game. The PC must render the game and encode the video while handling input, so a title that already saturates the system can produce an uneven stream.
Lower game resolution
Reduce the game’s internal resolution or graphics preset and repeat the same scene. This tests whether rendering load is preventing consistent frame delivery. Keep the change only if the host or frame-delivery indicators improve; lowering resolution will not cure network-time spikes.

Try disabling vertical sync
Valve lists turning off vertical sync as a streaming-performance troubleshooting step. Change it in the game, test for a repeatable interval, and compare the overlay. V-sync behavior varies by game and display path, so restore it if it creates tearing or does not improve delivery.

Use GPU-scheduling changes only for the matching symptom
Moonlight’s troubleshooting page lists disabling hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling on the host for a specific symptom in which video gets stuck. Treat this as a targeted experiment, not a universal performance cure: change the Windows setting only when the failure resembles that symptom, reboot if Windows requests it, and revert it if nothing changes.
Separate a game problem from a streaming problem
Test the client’s desktop or Steam Big Picture environment and, if possible, a second game under the same network, phone, resolution, and frame-rate settings. If every title stutters, the shared network, encoder, or decoder is more likely. If only one title does, investigate that game’s frame pacing, synchronization, overlays, and compatibility.
Moonlight’s troubleshooting guidance suggests checking input in Steam Big Picture when investigating game-specific compatibility. Use that as an isolation step, not as proof that Big Picture fixes video stutter. A game that behaves smoothly in the desktop environment but not in exclusive fullscreen may need a different display mode or in-game synchronization setting.
Steam Link and Moonlight: compare the same way
Neither the Steam nor Moonlight documentation establishes a universal speed winner. Compare them under controlled conditions rather than switching apps and changing several variables at once.
| Comparison axis | What to hold constant | What to observe |
|---|---|---|
| Network stability | Same router, PC connection, phone position, and Wi-Fi band | Network-time spikes, latency, and dropped frames |
| Stream load | Same resolution, FPS, and bitrate | Whether one client remains stable at the same demand |
| Host behavior | Same game scene and graphics settings | Frame delivery and encoder-related indicators |
| Client decoding | Same phone, battery state, and background apps | Decode time, heat, frame drops, and control responsiveness |
Change one client or one setting at a time. A result that improves after moving the phone closer to the router is evidence about Wi-Fi, not proof that one streaming application is inherently faster.
Recognize the symptom before choosing a fix
Different symptoms help narrow the failing stage, although the overlay remains the best confirmation.
- Periodic freezes or a sudden return to normal: look first for network-time spikes, wireless interference, or competing traffic.
- Constantly delayed controls while video remains smooth: compare latency and decode values, then check whether the PC is rendering slowly. Input delay is not by itself proof of a bad decoder.
- Jerky motion with stable network and decode readings: compare the game’s local frame pacing with the streamed desktop or another title. Rendering or synchronization may be the constraint.
- Video that stops updating completely: use the targeted Moonlight GPU-scheduling test only if the symptom matches its guidance; do not change that setting as a general optimization.
- Stutter that appears only after increasing quality: return to the last stable bitrate, resolution, or frame rate and raise one setting at a time.
Write down the exact scene and settings used for each test. Repeating the same path through a busy game area makes comparisons more meaningful than switching games and locations at the same time.

You do not need to purchase equipment to perform the initial diagnosis. You need a PC capable of running the game and encoding its stream, a phone with a compatible hardware video-decoding path, and a local router connection. Valve recommends at least a quad-core CPU on the gaming PC, while Moonlight recommends a good 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 client link and a wired PC-to-router connection where possible.

An Ethernet cable is the clearest first hardware choice when wiring the PC removes network spikes. It is a targeted fix because it eliminates the host’s wireless hop. A 5 GHz-capable Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 router is a conditional upgrade only when the phone’s wireless link remains the limiting component after you test position, interference, and competing traffic. Neither the Steam nor Moonlight guidance names a required router model or guarantees a particular improvement, so avoid buying a new router based solely on a feeling of lag.
If 720p30 is still unstable with the PC wired, the phone near the access point, and competing traffic paused, spend time on decoding, host frame delivery, and the affected game before buying networking hardware. Keep the cable or router purchase only if the controlled test shows a repeatable network benefit.
A complete troubleshooting order
- Capture a baseline: enable the overlay, reproduce the fault, and note network, decode, and frame indicators.
- Stabilize the path: wire the PC to the router, use 5 GHz on the phone near the access point, and pause competing traffic.
- Lower demand: reduce bitrate and test 720p30.
- Confirm the decoder: enable hardware H.264 decoding where available and repeat the low-load test.
- Reduce host load: lower game resolution; test disabling V-sync; use GPU-scheduling changes only for the video-stuck symptom.
- Isolate the title: compare another game and the client desktop or Steam Big Picture.
- Increase quality carefully: raise one setting at a time and stop at the last stable combination.
This order prevents a common false diagnosis: changing the router, graphics preset, and phone settings together can make the stream appear better without showing which constraint remains.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPrevent stutter after you find a stable setup
- Keep the PC on Ethernet whenever possible.
- Use the phone’s 5 GHz connection where signal quality is good; move closer to the access point when testing or playing.
- Save the bitrate, resolution, and FPS values that stayed stable rather than relying on an automatic quality mode that may react to congestion.
- Close high-bandwidth transfers and heavy background apps before starting a session.
- Recheck the overlay after changing the game, phone, router location, or operating-system settings.
- Keep a separate profile for demanding games instead of assuming one stream configuration fits every title.
Frequently asked questions
Why does streaming stutter even though my internet speed is high?
Remote play usually stays inside your home network. The PC-to-router or router-to-phone link can have interference, weak signal, or congestion even when your internet service is fast. Check the overlay for network-time spikes and test the PC on Ethernet and the phone on nearby 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
Should I always use 5 GHz?
5 GHz is typically less congested than 2.4 GHz, and Moonlight recommends a good 5 GHz Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6 client connection. Its shorter range means walls and distance can make it unreliable, so compare performance near the access point rather than assuming the band alone fixes the problem.
Is 720p30 the best permanent setting?
No. Moonlight suggests 720p30 as a low-requirement troubleshooting test. If it is smooth, raise bitrate, resolution, and frame rate separately until you find the highest stable combination for your network, host, and phone.
How can I tell whether the phone is the bottleneck?
With network-time readings stable, check decode-time or dropped-frame indicators while repeating the 720p30 test. Confirm hardware-accelerated H.264 decoding where available. If low-load settings still show decode trouble, compare with a newer phone before changing the router.
Does Steam Link or Moonlight have less lag?
The official guidance does not establish a universal winner. Use the same phone, router, PC connection, game scene, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate, then compare network, decode, and frame-delivery indicators.

Do I need a new router?
Not automatically. First wire the PC, test the phone close to the access point on 5 GHz, pause competing traffic, and lower the stream load. Consider a router upgrade only when those tests repeatedly identify the phone’s wireless link as the constraint.
Can lowering game graphics fix network stutter?
It can reduce host rendering and encoding load, but it will not fix network-time spikes. Use the overlay to decide whether to change game resolution or graphics settings.
Why does only one game stutter?
That points toward game-specific frame pacing, synchronization, overlays, or compatibility. Compare the client desktop or Steam Big Picture and another game under identical stream settings before changing shared network equipment.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the first thing to check when phone game streaming stutters?
Enable the streaming client’s performance overlay and reproduce the problem. Note whether network-time spikes, dropped frames, or high decode time coincide with the stutter.
Should the gaming PC use Ethernet?
Yes, if practical. Valve says a wired network provides the best streaming experience, and Moonlight also recommends wiring the PC to the router where possible.
What low-load settings should I test?
Lower the bitrate and try 1280×720 at 30 FPS. If that is smooth, increase bitrate, resolution, and frame rate one at a time.
When is a new router justified?
Only after controlled tests show the phone’s 5 GHz wireless link is the limiting component. A new router is not required for every stutter problem.
