Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFirst determine what “lag” means on your PC. A low frame rate is a consistently low FPS reading; stutter is a hitch or freeze during otherwise smooth play; slow response can come from a CPU that is overloaded; network latency affects multiplayer timing and is a separate problem. The steps below address frame rate and stutter. They cannot diagnose an internet connection.
Note whether performance is always poor or drops during large battles, late-game turns, loading, or camera movement. Also record whether one game is affected or several. That distinction points you toward game requirements and settings, or toward drivers, temperatures, memory, and other system-wide causes.

Start with the game’s actual requirements
Open the game’s official store page or support article and compare its minimum and recommended requirements with your exact PC. Check the processor, graphics card, system memory, operating-system version, storage requirement, and any stated DirectX or other API requirement. Minimum requirements generally mean that the game can start under specified conditions; they do not promise a particular FPS or image quality. A major update can also make hardware that previously felt adequate struggle.

If only one title is affected, start with that game’s official support notes, launcher options, and graphics settings. If several games are slow or hitching, prioritize system-wide resource use, driver state, temperature and power behavior, and background programs.
Make a clean, low-risk baseline
Close competing software
Exit applications you do not need while playing. Browsers with many tabs, video encoders, cloud-sync clients, launchers, and screen-recording or overlay tools can consume CPU time, memory, GPU cycles, or disk bandwidth. Steam specifically advises checking background processes because they can affect performance. Do not terminate a Windows process merely because its name is unfamiliar; close programs you recognize, or use their normal quit command.
Update Windows and the graphics driver
Install pending Windows updates and the current driver for your graphics processor through the appropriate official channel. Steam notes that outdated drivers may reduce FPS. Restart after installation, then test the same saved game or repeatable scene. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, consult the game or GPU maker’s support guidance before attempting a rollback; keep a record of the previous driver version.

Verify the intended GPU
Laptops and some desktops expose an integrated GPU and a separate graphics card. In Windows, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, select the game executable, choose Options, and set the intended high-performance GPU when that choice is available. Confirm the executable path so you do not configure only a launcher while the game runs from another file. This setting can correct a game that is using the low-power processor, but it cannot overcome a CPU, thermal, or memory bottleneck.
Use windowed-game optimizations only as a targeted test
Windows 11’s windowed-game optimizations apply only to compatible games. Treat the option as a targeted compatibility experiment, not a guaranteed FPS increase. Change one setting at a time, restart the game if requested, and keep the option only if frametimes or FPS improve in your repeatable test.
Lower the settings that cost the most
Do not immediately set every option to its lowest value. Reduce a few expensive settings, test the same scene, and keep the changes that solve the problem with an acceptable visual trade-off. Riot’s performance guidance identifies the following categories as likely to affect performance:
- Shadows: lower quality or distance first when scenes with many units are slow.
- Effects and particles: reduce them if combat, weather, explosions, or spell effects cause drops.
- Post-processing: lower effects such as motion blur, ambient effects, or other screen-space processing when available.
- Environment, detail, and material quality: reduce these when large maps or dense scenery overload rendering.
- Anti-aliasing: step down the method or sample level if GPU workload is high.
- Texture quality: reduce it when video memory is close to full or when texture streaming causes hitching. It is not the first answer for every CPU-bound strategy game.
Change one group at a time
- Load a saved game or benchmark scene that reliably reproduces the slowdown.
- Lower shadows and effects one step, then play the same sequence for several minutes.
- If the drop remains, test post-processing and environment/detail quality.
- Test anti-aliasing and texture quality separately, especially if the graphics card has limited video memory.
- Write down FPS and whether the hitching changed. Restore any setting that has no useful effect.
A preset can hide which option solved the issue. Individual changes leave you with a better-quality image at the same performance and make the result easier to reverse after a patch.

Use resolution as a bottleneck test
Resolution changes the number of pixels the GPU must render. Lower the game’s resolution substantially for a short test, or use a lower render scale if the title provides one.
- FPS rises clearly: the graphics workload is likely a significant factor. Keep the lower resolution, reduce GPU-heavy options, or consider a graphics-card upgrade after checking compatibility.
- FPS barely changes: Steam identifies CPU performance as a possible limit. This is a clue, not proof; monitor utilization and clock behavior if you are comfortable doing so.
- Hitches continue at every resolution: investigate system memory, background tasks, storage activity, drivers, and thermal or power throttling.
Resolution is not a complete diagnostic. A game can be CPU-limited at one point and GPU-limited in another, and a frame-rate counter alone does not reveal frametime spikes.
Find out whether the CPU, GPU, or memory is limiting you
CPU-limited behavior
Strategy games often simulate AI, pathfinding, economy, diplomacy, unit logic, and physics. Those systems can consume CPU cycles even when the scene looks simple. Microsoft’s developer analysis notes that many games are CPU-limited, while also describing GPU limits from high fill rates and pixel-shader demand at high resolution.
Typical clues include little improvement after lowering resolution, a busy CPU thread or core, and slowdowns when the number of units or simulated systems grows. A total CPU percentage that looks moderate does not rule out a limit: one heavily loaded thread can hold back the frame while other cores are idle.

GPU-limited behavior
Large resolution reductions, lower anti-aliasing, shadows, and effects should produce a measurable improvement when the GPU is the constraint. Watch for the graphics card running near full utilization at its expected clock, especially in visually dense scenes. If utilization or clocks fall unexpectedly, check power settings, temperature, and whether the game selected the intended GPU before buying hardware.
Memory pressure and repeated hitches
Steam notes that low available system memory can cause repeated frame hitches. Close memory-heavy applications and check available memory while the game is running. A PC RAM upgrade can help when the system is genuinely short of memory, but it will not fix a CPU-bound simulation or a graphics card that lacks rendering power. No universal RAM capacity is established for all strategy games; use the exact title’s requirements and your measured usage.
CPU-side rendering overhead
Microsoft’s Windows Gaming and Graphics Technologies Developer Relations guidance, with page metadata dated 2018, discusses approximately 300 or fewer draw-batch submissions per frame as a rough current-generation developer consideration. That figure is not a consumer FPS target, benchmark, or promise about a particular game. It illustrates why CPU-side submission overhead can matter even when a graphics card appears capable.

Strategy-game situations that need special attention
Late-game turns and large battles
If the game is smooth early but slows as the map fills, the simulation may be CPU-limited. Lowering texture quality or resolution may have little effect. Reduce simulation-heavy options only if the title exposes them, close background workloads, and check for a game update or an official support note about turn processing. Do not assume that a more powerful graphics card alone will solve this pattern.

SEGA’s Total War FAQ notes that higher resolution increases video-memory requirements. If textures stream late, objects appear blurry before sharpening, or hitches coincide with camera movement, test a lower texture setting and resolution. Keep enough visual quality to avoid unnecessary streaming, and verify that the graphics card meets the game’s stated requirements.
Laptop cooling and power
SEGA also warns that insufficient laptop cooling can restrict CPU power. Play on a hard, unobstructed surface; clear dust from vents using the manufacturer’s safe procedure; and avoid blocking intake or exhaust openings. Use the laptop’s normal performance power mode when plugged in if the manufacturer provides one. If clocks drop as the chassis heats, cooling and power behavior are part of the problem, not merely the graphics preset.
FPS caps and fan controls
An FPS cap can reduce heat, fan noise, and power swings when the system is rendering more frames than the display needs. SEGA lists FPS caps and fan settings among options worth considering for its games, but there is no universal cap or fan curve that suits every title, display, or PC. Choose a cap your system can sustain consistently, test input feel, and avoid risky overclocking or BIOS changes.
Choose the remedy by symptom
| Observed symptom | First checks | Likely trade-off or cost | When to escalate |
|---|---|---|---|
| Low FPS improves substantially after lowering resolution | GPU utilization, shadows, anti-aliasing, effects, video memory | Lower image clarity or a graphics-card purchase; settings are reversible | Check exact requirements and case, power-supply, and connector compatibility before a GPU upgrade |
| Resolution changes barely affect FPS | CPU utilization per core, simulation load, background processes | Lower visual settings may do little; a CPU upgrade costs more and may require a new motherboard | Use the game’s support channel for title-specific CPU issues |
| Short, repeated hitches while loading or turning the camera | Available RAM, texture quality, storage activity, overlays | Closing programs is free; a RAM upgrade requires matching type and capacity | Check memory requirements and compatibility; do not assume RAM fixes every stutter |
| Performance falls after several minutes on a laptop | Ventilation, temperature, power mode, clock throttling | Cleaning and repositioning are low cost; cooling hardware varies by model | Contact the manufacturer if temperatures or clocks remain abnormal |
| Only one game is affected | That title’s patch notes, executable GPU assignment, settings and mods | Game-specific changes may not help other titles | Send the title, version, hardware and reproduction steps to official support |
| Several games are affected | Drivers, Windows, background software, temperatures, power behavior | System maintenance is reversible; hardware replacement is not | Collect utilization, clock, memory and temperature evidence before purchasing parts |
Hardware upgrades: decide only after measuring
Steam lists video-card and memory upgrades as possible performance improvements, but it does not prescribe one universal model or RAM capacity. Treat an upgrade as a compatibility decision, not a generic cure.
Consider more RAM when
- Available memory becomes very low during the game.
- Windows begins paging or other applications force the game to hitch.
- The game’s stated requirement exceeds your installed memory.
Check your motherboard’s supported memory type, slot count, maximum capacity, and matched-module guidance. If memory is not the measured constraint, adding it will not correct CPU simulation limits.
Consider a graphics-card upgrade when
- Lowering resolution and GPU-heavy settings consistently raises FPS.
- The current card meets neither the game’s recommended graphics requirement nor its video-memory needs.
- Your case, power supply, connectors, motherboard slot, and cooling support the replacement.
Consider a CPU or platform upgrade when
- Resolution reductions do not materially change FPS.
- Slowdowns track AI, physics, unit counts, or turn processing.
- Your processor falls below the game’s requirement and temperatures and clocks are normal.
Platform changes can involve a motherboard, memory standard, cooler, and operating-system or firmware considerations. Gather measurements and the exact game requirement first.

A repeatable troubleshooting procedure
- Define the symptom: distinguish low FPS, stutter, slow input, and network latency. The guidance here covers the first two.
- Define the scope: test one affected title and one unaffected title if available. Note whether one or several games show the issue.
- Capture the baseline: record resolution, graphics preset, FPS, where drops occur, and whether the issue starts immediately or after heat builds.
- Check requirements: compare the exact game version and your CPU, GPU, RAM, Windows version, and storage against official requirements.
- Remove background load: close unneeded applications, overlays, and recording tools.
- Update safely: install current Windows and graphics drivers through official channels, then restart.
- Confirm the GPU: use Windows graphics settings to assign the intended processor on systems with more than one GPU.
- Test settings: lower shadows, effects, post-processing, detail/material quality, anti-aliasing, and—when video memory is implicated—textures.
- Run the resolution test: lower resolution substantially and compare the same scene.
- Check resources: observe CPU behavior, GPU utilization and clocks, available RAM, temperatures, and power mode if you have suitable monitoring tools.
- Address physical constraints: improve laptop ventilation and investigate throttling before changing hardware.
- Escalate with evidence: provide the game name and version, CPU, GPU, RAM, resolution, Windows version, affected scene, and whether the issue affects one or several games to the game’s official support.
Common mistakes that waste time
- Assuming “minimum” means smooth: minimum requirements do not guarantee high FPS.
- Changing every option at once: you lose the ability to identify the setting that mattered.
- Blaming the GPU for every strategy-game slowdown: AI and simulation can make the CPU the limit.
- Buying RAM without checking usage: memory helps only when memory pressure is real.
- Using an arbitrary FPS cap: a cap must match the game, display, cooling, and hardware.
- Ignoring heat: a laptop can lose CPU power when cooling is insufficient.
- Confusing network delay with FPS: internet latency requires a different diagnosis than local rendering performance.
- Applying a fix from one title universally: settings, patches, and simulation workloads vary by game.
When to ask for title-specific help
Escalate to the game’s official support when a single title remains problematic after the baseline steps, when a patch clearly triggered the issue, or when the game crashes, corrupts graphics, or shows behavior not explained by resource use. Include the game name and version, CPU, GPU, installed and available RAM, resolution, Windows version, driver version, graphics settings, mods, and the exact scene or action that reproduces the drop. State whether the problem affects one game or several and whether lowering resolution changed FPS.
Those details let support separate a known game defect from a local CPU, GPU, memory, driver, or thermal limit without guessing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFrequently Asked Questions
Does lowering resolution always fix low FPS?
No. A substantial improvement points toward GPU workload; little or no change suggests that CPU performance or another system constraint may be limiting the game.
How much RAM do strategy games need?
There is no single capacity that applies to every title. Compare the exact game’s requirements with available memory during play; add RAM only when measured memory pressure or the requirement justifies it.
Should I cap my FPS?
A cap can reduce heat, noise, and power swings when your PC renders more frames than necessary, but the useful limit depends on the game, display, cooling, and hardware.
Why does a strategy game slow down late in a campaign?
More units, AI decisions, pathfinding, and other simulation systems can increase CPU work. If lowering resolution does little, investigate CPU behavior and the game’s support notes rather than assuming a graphics-card problem.
