How to Fix Kindle Scribe Not Syncing or Sending Notes

“Not syncing” on a Kindle Scribe can mean two different problems: the notebook is not backing up to Amazon’s cloud, or a deliberate share/export action is failing. First identify which job failed. Turn on internet access and Sync, then start a manual sync from Quick Actions or Menu. For email and cloud-drive transfers, use their separate Share or export workflows; they are not continuous notebook synchronization.

Identify what “not syncing” means

Kindle Scribe has separate paths for cloud backup, sharing by email, handwriting conversion and third-party exports. A notebook that is safely backed up may still be unavailable in a phone Kindle app, while an email share can fail even though the notebook is present on the Scribe.

What you expected Where the result goes How it works
Protect a Scribe notebook and use it on another Scribe Amazon’s cloud and other Kindle Scribe devices Backup occurs when the Scribe is online and Sync is on; you can start Sync manually.
Send a notebook or document to someone An email recipient You open the item and use Share. The generated download link expires after seven days.
Move a copy to a connected cloud service Google Drive, OneDrive or OneNote The transfer is manual. Files do not automatically synchronize between the service and the Scribe.
Turn handwriting into editable text and send it The email address associated with the Amazon account registered to the Scribe Use “Convert to text and quick send.” This option has an account-email requirement.

Before changing settings, decide which row describes your problem. The fixes below are ordered so that you do not mistake a destination limitation for a failed backup.

Restore Kindle Scribe cloud backup

1. Confirm an internet connection

Amazon’s baseline requirement is that the Kindle Scribe be connected to the internet. Check the device’s connection before testing Sync. If the Scribe is offline, a manual Sync cannot upload the notebook or retrieve pending items.

  • Our most advanced Kindle Scribe – Features an 11” Colorsoft display with front light, built-in notebook, AI tools, and support for popular cloud services.
  • Bring ideas to life in color – The custom-built Colorsoft display delivers high-contrast, paper-like color that’s easy on the eyes without distracting flashes when writing.
  • Get a pen-on-paper feel: The textured surface and responsive display create a smooth, paper-like writing experience. Plus, the included pen never needs charging and has a built-in eraser and shortcut button for tools like the highlighter.
  • More room to read, write, and think – Just 5.4mm thin and 400g light, with fluid performance and a large 11" display that gives you space to work comfortably.
  • Get more out of your notes – Take notes in the built-in notebook, then use AI to find information, ask questions about what you’ve written, and generate summaries. You can also clean up handwriting or convert it to text.

Use a simple, controlled test: leave the Scribe connected, open the notebook you were editing, and then run Sync. Avoid judging the result from a different service first. The first question is whether the notebook can complete its Amazon backup; email and cloud-drive delivery are separate operations.

2. Make sure Sync is enabled

Amazon documents the Sync setting under More > Settings > Device Options. Turn Sync on if it is disabled. Then initiate a sync rather than waiting for an automatic attempt:

  1. Open Quick Actions and tap the Sync icon; or
  2. Open the Menu and choose Sync and Check for Items.

Allow the Scribe to remain connected while the operation runs. Amazon warns that notes, highlights or bookmarks made while Sync was turned off may be lost when Sync is turned back on. Therefore, do not repeatedly toggle Sync as a harmless experiment: first preserve any recently created material you can still access, enable Sync once, and run the manual command.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the notebook appears on the Scribe but not elsewhere, do not immediately delete it or create a replacement notebook. Confirm the destination and annotation type first. Repeatedly changing Sync can make it harder to tell whether the issue is backup, visibility or an export failure.

3. Check whether the notebook is actually backed up

Amazon states that Kindle Scribe notebooks are backed up to the cloud when the device is connected to the internet and Sync is turned on. A missing notebook in another app does not, by itself, disprove that backup. The type of content and the destination matter.

  • Handwritten notebook content: Amazon currently describes access across Kindle Scribe devices.
  • Text-based annotations and highlights: Amazon describes access across Kindle surfaces after sync.
  • A phone or tablet Kindle app: A handwritten Scribe notebook may not appear there because handwriting access is documented for Scribe devices, not all Kindle surfaces.

If your goal is to see handwritten pages on another Scribe, check that device after synchronization. If your goal is to read handwriting in a Kindle phone app, treat the destination as a limitation to investigate rather than endlessly repeating Sync.

  1. Write a small, identifiable mark in the notebook while Sync is enabled.
  2. Confirm the Scribe is online.
  3. Run Quick Actions > Sync or Menu > Sync and Check for Items.
  4. Look for the notebook on another Kindle Scribe, which is the destination Amazon identifies for handwritten notebook access.

This test does not prove that a handwritten notebook must appear in every Kindle app. It only checks the cloud-backup path and the destination Amazon documents for handwritten content. If text annotations or highlights are the item you are checking, their documented destination is broader across Kindle surfaces.

Fix “sending notes by email” problems

Use the Share action, not cloud backup

Email delivery is an explicit share operation. It does not create a continuously updated email copy of the notebook. To send the current item:

  1. Open the book, document or notebook on the Kindle Scribe.
  2. Display the top bar.
  3. Tap Share.
  4. Choose Quick send to the registered email address, or choose Share via email.

The message contains a download link. Amazon says that link expires after seven days, so a recipient who opens an older message after that period needs a new share. Later edits to the notebook are not delivered through the old link; run Share again when you need an updated copy.

Think of each email as a snapshot generated at the time you use Share. It is not a subscription, a background backup, or a live attachment. If you make more notes after sending, those edits remain on the Scribe and in its cloud backup until you deliberately share the item again.

When “Convert to text and quick send” is missing

Handwriting conversion has an additional account requirement. Amazon says the Convert to text and quick send option requires an email address associated with the Amazon account used to register the Scribe.

  1. Check which Amazon account is registered on the Scribe.
  2. Open that account’s settings and verify that an email address is associated with it.
  3. Return to the notebook and check the Share options again.

This requirement is documented for the conversion-and-quick-send option. Do not assume that every ordinary Share method requires the same setting.

If the email arrives but the link does not work

  • Check the age of the message. A seven-day-old or older download link has expired.
  • Request a fresh Share from the Scribe instead of forwarding the old message.
  • Confirm that you used the intended Share option: Quick send uses the registered email, while Share via email is the separate email workflow shown in the top bar.

Amazon’s cited guidance does not establish a universal delivery time or a single fix for every mail-server or account failure. If a newly generated share still cannot be delivered, record the exact error and contact Amazon support.

Choose the right kind of output

Backup, email sharing and conversion can produce different results. A handwritten export preserves the page as handwriting, while conversion is intended to create text. A searchable or converted document is therefore not interchangeable with the original handwritten notebook. Decide whether the recipient needs the original page appearance, editable text or a searchable copy before selecting the Share option. If the recipient needs later edits, send a new copy after those edits; the earlier email link will not update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand handwriting conversion and its limits

“Sync and convert” combines two operations: the notebook must be available to Amazon’s service, and the handwriting must then be processed into text. A failure in conversion is not automatically evidence that ordinary cloud backup failed.

For a missing conversion option on Kindle software version 5.16.2 or higher, Amazon’s troubleshooting instruction is to restart the device. This version threshold belongs to the handwriting-conversion guidance; it is not a general requirement to restart for every synchronization complaint.

If you receive multiple sync-and-convert errors, Amazon directs you to remove the notebook from the device, download it again by tapping its cover, and retry conversion. Use this sequence only after confirming internet access and current software, because removing a local copy is a targeted recovery step rather than a general first response.

Large notebooks can take time to process. Amazon notes that a synced notebook of 100 or more pages can take over 10 minutes to convert. That is a processing-time note, not a guaranteed timeout or a promise that all sync or email failures resolve within a particular period. Do not cancel a conversion merely because it has exceeded a few minutes when the notebook is at least 100 pages.

Keep the recovery steps in their intended order. First confirm connectivity and that the Scribe is running current software. Restart only when the conversion option is missing on version 5.16.2 or higher. If several sync-and-convert attempts still fail, remove the affected notebook, tap its cover to download it again, and retry. That procedure addresses the specific conversion error path; it should not replace the ordinary Sync check for a notebook that simply is not appearing on another device.

Fix Google Drive, OneDrive or OneNote transfers

Do not expect live two-way synchronization

Amazon says connected cloud-drive files do not automatically sync between the drive and the Kindle. Import and export are manual actions, and the result is a copy rather than a live notebook that updates itself after every Scribe edit.

  • Notebook summaries - Summarize your notes, change their length and tone, and refine your writing with built-in AI notebook tools.

Use the Scribe’s documented upload or export action when you need a new copy in Google Drive, OneDrive or OneNote. If you edit the notebook afterward, perform another manual transfer; the earlier copy does not silently receive later handwriting.

This distinction explains why a file can look “stuck” in a cloud service even though the Scribe is working normally. The service contains the last copy you deliberately uploaded, not a continuously mirrored notebook. Compare the date or state of the copy with the time of your last export, then run another export when you need the newer pages.

Correct an account mismatch

A service connection can fail when the Amazon account used during the connection flow differs from the account registered to the Scribe. Amazon’s check is:

  1. On the Scribe, open Settings > Your Account and note the registered Amazon account.
  2. Restart the cloud-service connection flow.
  3. Use that same Amazon account when the connection asks you to sign in or authorize the service.

This check concerns the Amazon identity used to establish the connection. It does not turn the destination into an automatic sync service. After reconnecting, you still need to perform the upload or export manually, and later edits require another transfer.

Compare the three jobs before troubleshooting

Question Amazon cloud backup Email Share Connected drive or OneNote
Who initiates it? Sync runs when the Scribe is online and Sync is enabled; it can also be started manually. You open the item and choose Share. You import or export manually.
What is the destination? Amazon’s cloud and supported Kindle destinations. An email recipient using a generated download link. A copy in Google Drive, OneDrive or OneNote.
Does it keep updating? It is the backup path for supported Kindle content. No. The link is for the generated share and expires after seven days. No. The connected service does not automatically mirror later edits.
What content expectation matters? Handwritten notebooks are documented across Scribe devices; text annotations and highlights have broader Kindle access. You choose between the available handwritten or conversion-oriented output. You receive an exported copy, not a live notebook.

Use a symptom-based recovery order

Symptom Most relevant check Next action
Notebook is absent on another Scribe Internet connection and Sync setting Enable Sync, then use Quick Actions > Sync or Menu > Sync and Check for Items.
Handwritten notebook is absent from a phone Kindle app Destination support for handwritten content Verify the notebook on another Scribe; Amazon’s cross-device statement is specifically for Scribe devices.
Share option is available but recipient has an old or dead link Link age Send the item again; shared download links expire after seven days.
“Convert to text and quick send” is missing Registered-account email and software version Verify the registered Amazon-account email; if the option is missing on version 5.16.2 or higher, restart the Scribe.
Several sync-and-convert attempts fail Connectivity, software and notebook download Confirm internet and current software, remove the notebook, tap its cover to download it again, and retry conversion.
Cloud-drive copy never updates Transfer model Start another manual export; connected drives are not automatic notebook mirrors.
Cloud-drive connection uses the wrong identity Amazon account shown in Settings > Your Account Reconnect using the same Amazon account registered to the Scribe.

What not to assume

  • A backup is not an email share. Sync protects or distributes supported content through Amazon’s Kindle ecosystem; Share creates a downloadable message.
  • An email share is not a subscription. The recipient receives the generated copy through a link that expires after seven days.
  • A cloud-drive export is not a live notebook. You must export again after subsequent edits.
  • Handwriting visibility is not universal across Kindle apps. Amazon distinguishes handwritten notebook access on Scribe devices from text annotations and highlights across Kindle surfaces.
  • Conversion recovery is not a universal sync cure. Removing and redownloading a notebook is Amazon’s response to repeated sync-and-convert errors, not a blanket remedy for every missing notebook or failed email.
  • A long conversion is not automatically a failure. Amazon says notebooks with 100 or more pages can take over 10 minutes to process.
  • A new device or accessory is not an established fix. The documented remedies concern connection, Sync, account matching and the specific conversion workflow, not replacing the Scribe, stylus, cable or case.

When to contact Amazon support

Amazon’s help pages provide general operating steps, but they cannot inspect your individual account, device state, network or service status. Contact Amazon support when the relevant path still fails after its checks, and provide enough detail to avoid being routed to the wrong workflow:

  • The exact Kindle Scribe generation.
  • The software version shown on the device.
  • The full error wording or a description of what happened.
  • Whether the failure is cloud backup, email Share, handwriting conversion, Google Drive, OneDrive or OneNote export.
  • Whether the Scribe was connected to the internet and whether Sync was enabled when you tested it.
  • For a sharing issue, whether the message was newly generated or older than seven days.
  • For a cloud-drive issue, which Amazon account appears under Settings > Your Account and which account you used in the connection flow.
  • For conversion, the notebook’s approximate page count and whether you completed the remove-and-redownload step after repeated errors.

These details distinguish a backup problem from a destination or conversion problem and let support apply the matching procedure instead of treating every “not syncing” report as the same fault.

A reliable operating routine for Scribe notes

  1. Keep the Scribe connected to the internet when you need notebook backup.
  2. Leave Sync enabled; remember that material created while it was off may be lost when it is re-enabled.
  3. Use Quick Actions > Sync or Menu > Sync and Check for Items when you need to force a check.
  4. Use Share whenever you need to send a snapshot to an email recipient, and generate a new share after important edits.
  5. For Google Drive, OneDrive or OneNote, perform a fresh manual export when you need an updated copy.
  6. For conversion failures, follow the narrower recovery path: verify internet and software, restart if the conversion option is missing on version 5.16.2 or higher, and redownload the notebook after repeated sync-and-convert errors.
  7. When checking a missing result, compare the destination with the content type: handwritten notebooks are documented across Scribe devices, while text annotations and highlights are documented across Kindle surfaces.

The key distinction is simple: Sync handles supported Kindle cloud backup, while Share and cloud-drive actions are user-initiated ways to send or copy notes. Choosing the correct path prevents most troubleshooting loops and sets the right expectation for where handwritten content will appear.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I manually sync a Kindle Scribe notebook?

Connect the Scribe to the internet, make sure Sync is enabled under More > Settings > Device Options, then tap the Sync icon in Quick Actions or choose Menu > Sync and Check for Items.

Why is my handwritten notebook missing from the Kindle phone app?

Amazon documents handwritten notebook access across Kindle Scribe devices, while text annotations and highlights have broader Kindle-surface access. The missing phone-app notebook may therefore be a destination limitation rather than failed backup.

How long does a Kindle Scribe email share link last?

Amazon says the download link generated by Share expires after seven days. Generate a new Share if the recipient opens an older or expired message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Kindle Scribe automatically sync with Google Drive or OneDrive?

No. Amazon describes connected cloud-drive transfers as manual imports and exports. The service receives a copy, and you must export again after later edits.

Why is “Convert to text and quick send” unavailable?

That option requires an email address associated with the Amazon account used to register the Scribe. Verify the account email. If the option is missing on software version 5.16.2 or higher, restart the device.

What should I do after repeated sync-and-convert errors?

Confirm internet access and current software. Then remove the notebook from the device, tap its cover to download it again, and retry conversion. This is a targeted recovery path for repeated sync-and-convert errors.

How long can handwriting conversion take?

Amazon notes that a synced notebook with 100 or more pages can take over 10 minutes to convert. That figure is a processing note, not a universal timeout for all sync or email problems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What information should I give Amazon support?

Provide the Scribe generation, software version, exact error text, the affected workflow, connection and Sync status, and whether an email link is older than seven days or a cloud-drive connection uses the same Amazon account shown under Settings > Your Account.

The Bottom Line

First decide whether you need Amazon cloud backup, an email snapshot, handwriting conversion or a manual cloud-drive export. Keep the Scribe online with Sync enabled, use the documented manual commands, remember that email links expire after seven days, and do not expect Google Drive, OneDrive or OneNote to mirror later edits automatically.
