Start with the book’s reading controls, not the device settings: open Aa (called Page Display on some Kindle e-readers), then adjust font size, margins, line spacing, alignment, and—where available—orientation. If every book looks wrong, the cause is probably a global display preference. If only one title is cramped or clipped, check whether it uses a fixed layout; if it does, ordinary text controls may not apply. A single title that still looks broken should be reported from its Kindle book detail page so the formatting can be corrected.
Use this five-step fix first
- Open the in-book controls. On a Kindle e-reader, tap the top of the page to show the toolbar and select Aa or Page Display. In the Kindle app, open the book, tap near the top center, and select Aa. Labels and available controls vary by model and platform. See Amazon’s e-reader instructions at Customize Your Kindle E-Reader Text Display and app instructions at Accessible Reading Options for Kindle Reading Apps.
- Change font size and appearance. Increase the size if text is hard to read; decrease it if lines break awkwardly or too few words fit. If your model offers them, test another font, boldness level, or typeface. On supported e-readers, you can also resize text with a pinch gesture.
- Change line length and spacing. Widen margins to shorten lines when the page feels visually dense, or narrow them to fit more words. Try line, paragraph, word, or character-spacing controls when your device or app provides them.
- Try alignment and orientation. If fully justified text creates conspicuous gaps, switch to left alignment. On an e-reader, rotate between portrait and landscape; in supported apps, check orientation lock. App readers may also offer continuous scrolling and page-color controls.
- Test another book. If other titles display normally, stop changing global settings and investigate the affected book’s layout type. If every title is affected, continue working through the display controls and platform-specific options below.
Open the right controls on your device
Kindle e-readers
Tap the upper edge of the page while reading to reveal the toolbar, then choose Aa or Page Display. The exact tabs and options differ by Kindle model. Amazon’s general instructions cover Kindle E-Readers 6th Generation and later, while device-level font-size controls are documented for Kindle E-Reader 11th Generation and later, Kindle Scribe, and Kindle Colorsoft. The font-size control in the reading toolbar is separate from any device-level setting. Amazon documents the device-specific procedure in Enlarge the Font Size on Your Kindle E-Reader.

Kindle reading apps
Open the book, tap near the top center, and select Aa. Depending on whether you are using Android, iOS, macOS, PC, or Kindle for Web, the panel may include font size and type, boldness, margins, spacing, brightness, page color, continuous scrolling, text alignment, and orientation lock. Do not assume a control shown in one app exists in another; the app’s own Aa panel is the authoritative list for that platform.

| What you see | First setting to try | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Text is too small | Increase font size or boldness | Larger glyphs improve legibility, but they also create more page turns and can expose limitations in a fixed-layout book. |
| Only a few words fit on each line | Reduce font size slightly or narrow the margins | More usable line width reduces excessive wrapping. |
| Text feels squeezed against the edges | Increase margins | Extra white space can make a dense page easier to scan, even though fewer words appear on each screen. |
| Large, uneven gaps appear between words | Switch from full justification to left alignment | Left alignment avoids stretching spaces to make both edges line up. |
| Lines or paragraphs are too far apart | Reduce line or paragraph spacing | Tighter spacing puts more content on a page; increase it instead when lines run together. |
| The page composition is awkward in portrait | Try landscape, or unlock orientation in the app | A wider page can produce more natural line lengths for some books. |
| Background contrast makes text difficult to see | Change page color or brightness where available | Contrast and glare can make an otherwise correct layout appear harder to read. |
These controls change the presentation of a reflowable book. They cannot repair missing text, misplaced images, or a page that was authored as an unchangeable image.

Change one setting at a time
It is easy to make the page look worse by changing several controls together. Start with the font size, let the page redraw, and then assess the line length. Next adjust margins, followed by line or paragraph spacing. Finally test alignment and orientation. This sequence shows which control caused an improvement and makes it easier to return to a comfortable combination.
Remember that every change has a trade-off. A larger font improves legibility but produces more page turns. Narrow margins put more words on a screen but can make the text feel crowded. Wider margins create breathing room while reducing usable line length. Tighter line spacing shows more content but may make adjacent lines merge visually. There is no single setting that is best for every reader or every title.
Determine whether the problem affects every book or one title
The scope of the fault is the fastest diagnostic test. Open a different reflowable book and compare the same page orientation and approximate text size.

|---|---|---|
| Every book looks cramped or clipped | A font, margin, spacing, alignment, orientation, or app preference is affecting the reader globally. | Return to the Aa/Page Display panel and change one setting at a time. Check orientation lock and platform-specific options. |
| Several books from different publishers are affected, but only in one app | The app’s reading preferences or screen orientation are involved. | Compare the same title on another supported Kindle app or e-reader, then adjust that app’s controls. |
| Only one title is affected | The title may be fixed-layout or contain a formatting error. | Check the title’s accessibility information and report poor formatting if the problem remains. |
| Only one chapter, illustration, or table is clipped | A localized content or file-format problem is more likely than a global preference. | Record the chapter or page, test another book, and use the book-detail reporting path. |
Check whether the book is reflowable or fixed-layout
Reflowable books
In a reflowable Kindle book, text is arranged again to fit the screen. Changing font size, margins, spacing, alignment, or orientation should alter the page shape. Large fonts naturally create more page turns, but the words should remain readable and inside the screen boundaries.
Fixed-layout books
A fixed-layout title preserves a designed page rather than rebuilding the text for your display. Amazon lists print replica books, comics, manga, and some children’s books and textbooks as examples. Because the page design is preserved, the title may not permit changes to font size, margins, spacing, or alignment. A page can therefore look tiny, crowded, or clipped even when your reader’s normal controls work correctly.

Open the book’s listing and review its accessibility information for the visual-adjustment status. Amazon explains how to interpret those details in Learn About Accessibility Information for Kindle Books. If the listing indicates that visual adjustments are unavailable, changing the global font setting will not convert that title into a reflowable one.
Why Enhanced Typesetting sometimes changes the result
Some Kindle books use Amazon’s Enhanced Typesetting system. Amazon says: “Kindle with Enhanced Typesetting adjusts without customer intervention when the font size is large or the line length is short on the device page, to improve readability by preventing large gaps between words or squished text.” This describes a layout capability, not a guarantee that every individual book is correctly formatted. A book can support Enhanced Typesetting and still contain an authoring error, a problematic table, or a fixed-layout section. More information is available in Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing’s Enhanced Typesetting and Page Flip guidance.

If the edge clipping occurs in every book
- Open Aa/Page Display and return to a moderate font size.
- Check margins; an unusually narrow margin can make the page appear to run into the bezel, while an unusually large font can create awkward wrapping.
- Switch between portrait and landscape on an e-reader, or disable orientation lock in an app that supports rotation.
- Open a second book. If its text is also clipped, the issue is reader-wide rather than title-specific.
If clipping occurs in one book
Do not assume a new device will solve it. Check whether the title is fixed-layout, then try the same book on another Kindle app or e-reader if one is available. If the same passage remains clipped, note the chapter, page location, and type of content involved. A publisher may need to replace the book file.
What to do when you cannot change the font
First confirm that you opened the in-book Aa/Page Display menu rather than a general device settings screen. Then test a known reflowable title. If font controls work there but not in the problem book, the title is probably fixed-layout or has a restricted design. Print replica, comics, manga, and some textbooks commonly preserve their page geometry.
If the book’s accessibility information says visual adjustments are unsupported, there is no reader-side font setting that can make the preserved page reflow. You can still try landscape orientation, page-color or brightness changes, and app features such as continuous scrolling when offered, but those are viewing aids rather than a change to the book’s underlying layout.

Use accessibility information as a capability check
The accessibility panel on a Kindle book listing is useful before you spend time changing settings. It indicates whether visual adjustments are available for that title. If they are supported, the Aa panel should expose at least some typography or layout choices, although the exact list still depends on the device or app. If they are not supported, the limitation belongs to the book’s design rather than your personal settings.
Do not confuse a missing control with a malfunctioning screen. A control can be absent because you are reading a fixed-layout title, because your app platform does not offer that option, or because your Kindle generation has a different interface. Test the same control with a reflowable book before concluding that the device is defective.
Report a title-specific formatting defect
When one Kindle book remains visibly broken after you have checked its layout type and tested the available controls, report the issue from that book’s detail page. Amazon’s Kindle content-quality guidance describes the poor-formatting route in Guide to Kindle Content Quality.
- Open the affected book’s store or library detail page.
- Find the option to report an issue with the book.
- Select the path for poor formatting or a similar formatting problem.
- Describe exactly what is wrong: for example, text cut off on the right edge, overlapping lines, an unreadable table, or a chapter with abnormal spacing.
- Include the chapter or location and the device or app where you observed it. Mention whether another book displays normally.
A precise report is more useful than saying only that the book looks bad. State whether the defect is present in portrait, landscape, or both; whether changing font size affects it; and whether it occurs in ordinary paragraphs, images, tables, or a particular chapter. This helps separate a reproducible file problem from a preference that is specific to one device.
This report sends the problem to the party responsible for the book file. Reader settings cannot correct an incorrectly produced source file, and a title may need a publisher-side update.

How device and app differences affect the fix
| Reader environment | Controls documented by Amazon | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Kindle e-readers, 6th Generation and later | In-book text-display controls | Exact labels and available settings vary by model. |
| Kindle E-Reader 11th Generation and later, Kindle Scribe, Kindle Colorsoft | Device-level font-size controls plus in-book controls | The device-level feature is not stated for every earlier model. |
| Kindle apps | Font size/type, spacing, margins, alignment, page color, brightness, continuous scrolling, and orientation lock on some devices | Availability differs among Android, iOS/macOS, PC, and Kindle for Web. |
| Any platform displaying a fixed-layout title | Only the controls supported by that title and platform | Font, margin, spacing, and alignment changes may be unavailable. |
If instructions from a different Kindle model mention a button you do not see, that is usually a platform or generation difference rather than a fault. Use the controls that appear in your own Aa/Page Display panel and verify behavior with a reflowable book.
Common troubleshooting mistakes
- Changing only the device-level font. The in-book toolbar has its own text controls, and not every model has a separate device-level font-size feature.
- Assuming all Kindle books reflow. Print replica, comics, manga, and some children’s books and textbooks may preserve their page design.
- Using a global fix for a single title. If other books are normal, resetting every reading preference can make them less comfortable without repairing the affected file.
- Calling large word gaps a clipping problem. Full justification can stretch spaces; left alignment is the relevant test when the words themselves are present.
- Comparing different platforms without noting the settings. Record the app, device generation, orientation, and approximate font size so that a comparison is meaningful.
A practical decision path
- All books are hard to read: adjust font size, margins, spacing, alignment, orientation, brightness, or page color in Aa/Page Display.
- Only one app is affected: inspect that app’s own reading controls and orientation lock, then compare another platform.
- Only one book is affected: check accessibility information for fixed-layout status before changing global preferences.
- One title is still broken after those checks: report poor formatting from the book detail page with a precise location and symptom.
The key distinction is whether the reader can reflow the book. Reflowable content responds to your typography choices; fixed-layout content preserves its designed page. Once that distinction is clear, you can stop chasing device-wide settings for a problem that belongs in the book file.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do my Kindle pages look cramped in every book?
Open Aa or Page Display and check font size, margins, line and paragraph spacing, alignment, and orientation. A global reading preference is the likely cause when multiple unrelated books look the same. Change one setting at a time and test another reflowable title.
Why is text cut off on only one Kindle book?
That title may use fixed layout or contain a formatting defect. Check its accessibility information, try the title on another supported Kindle app or e-reader, and report poor formatting from the book’s detail page if the same passage remains clipped.
Why can’t I change the font in a Kindle book?
The book may be fixed-layout, such as a print replica, comic, manga, or some children’s book or textbook. Fixed-layout pages preserve their design and may not support font, margin, spacing, or alignment changes. Confirm by testing a reflowable book and checking the listing’s accessibility details.
Best Value
Which Kindle models have device-level font-size controls?
Amazon documents device-level font-size controls for Kindle E-Reader 11th Generation and later, Kindle Scribe, and Kindle Colorsoft. In-book Aa/Page Display controls are separate, and exact options vary by model.
How do I fix large gaps between words on Kindle?
Open the Aa panel and switch from full justification to left alignment if that option is available. Enhanced Typesetting can adjust some layouts when fonts are large or lines are short, but it does not guarantee that every book is perfectly formatted.
Should I use portrait or landscape for a cramped Kindle page?
Try both orientations on an e-reader. In supported apps, check orientation lock. A wider landscape page can produce more natural line lengths, but orientation cannot make a fixed-layout book reflow.
What details should I include when reporting Kindle formatting?
Give the book title, chapter or location, exact symptom, device or app, orientation, and whether changing font or layout controls changed anything. Mention whether other books display normally and identify clipped text, overlapping lines, abnormal spacing, or an unreadable table.
Do I need a new Kindle to fix a badly formatted book?
Usually not. If other books display normally, the issue is likely the title’s fixed layout or source file. Test the book on another platform only to confirm the pattern, then report the formatting problem so the publisher can correct the file.
The Bottom Line
Start with the in-book Aa/Page Display controls and test another title. Global problems usually respond to font, margin, spacing, alignment, orientation, brightness, or page-color changes. A single book that ignores those controls may be fixed-layout or incorrectly formatted; check its accessibility information and report the defect from the book detail page.
