1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe safest way to fix KBDJPN.DLL is to repair Windows itself, not to download a replacement DLL. KBDJPN.DLL is the Microsoft Windows component for the Japanese keyboard layout. Run the built-in DISM and System File Checker repairs first, then reinstall the Japanese language features if the file is intact but the layout is wrong. A registry change is appropriate only for a specific Windows 365 or Azure Virtual Desktop keyboard-redirection problem. If the file is zero bytes or remains damaged after servicing, use official Windows recovery or installation media.
This guide separates a damaged system component from a language-profile or remote-session configuration problem, because they require different fixes.

What KBDJPN.DLL is and whether it is safe
KBDJPN.DLL is a Windows keyboard-layout library. Windows identifies the Japanese layout with keyboard-layout ID (KLID) 00000411 and associates that layout with KBDJPN.DLL. Keyboard Layout Info describes it as the JP Japanese Keyboard Layout Stub driver, with Microsoft Windows as the product. Microsoft’s keyboard-layout documentation treats these DLLs as operating-system components installed in the Windows system directory and activated through language settings.

The legitimate file normally belongs at C:WindowsSystem32KBDJPN.DLL. It is not a standalone program that you should install separately. A file in that path can still be corrupted, truncated, or unreadable, so its presence alone does not prove that it is healthy.

Do not download KBDJPN.DLL from an unofficial DLL website. A file from an unknown source may be the wrong architecture or version, may not match the Windows component store, and can create a security risk. Windows servicing and official recovery media are the supported ways to restore a protected component.
Symptoms and what they usually indicate
The repair path depends on what you observe. A hard file error and a merely incorrect keyboard selection should not be treated as the same problem.
| Symptom | Most likely scope | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Windows says KBDJPN.DLL is missing, cannot run, or contains an error | Damaged or missing Windows system component | Check the file, then run DISM followed by SFC |
| The file is present but has a zero-byte size or cannot be read | Serious system-file or component-store corruption | Use Windows image repair; prepare for recovery or reinstallation if it persists |
| Japanese typing has switched to an English layout, but no DLL error appears | Language profile, IME, or unexpected keyboard entry | Repair Japanese language features and remove unintended layouts |
| The problem occurs only in a Mac-to-Windows 365 or Azure Virtual Desktop RDP session | Remote keyboard redirection | Use the documented, scenario-specific registry workaround |
| The issue started after a failed update, storage problem, or abrupt shutdown | Possible component-store or protected-file damage | Run servicing repairs and review whether Windows recovery is needed |
One Microsoft Q&A report described Windows 10 displaying a Japanese message that KBDJPN.DLL could not run or contained an error, with error state 0xc0000020. The user also found a zero-byte file and could no longer select the Japanese keyboard. Earlier repair attempts failed in that case; a clean installation restored operation. That outcome does not mean every case requires a clean install, but a zero-byte file plus 0xc0000020 should be treated as a serious corruption signal.
Before changing anything
- Record the environment. Note the Windows edition and build, whether the system is 32-bit or 64-bit, the exact wording and code of the error, and whether the problem occurs locally or only through RDP, Windows 365, or Azure Virtual Desktop.
- Check the expected path. In File Explorer, enter
C:WindowsSystem32KBDJPN.DLL. Confirm whether the file exists, whether Windows reports a nonzero size, and whether it can be read. Do not overwrite it manually. - Protect your data. Back up important files before servicing Windows or editing the registry. If you eventually need a repair installation or clean installation, a current backup is essential.
- Use an administrator account. DISM, SFC, registry changes, and some language-feature operations require elevation. If you are working on a managed or remote computer, coordinate with the administrator before changing system settings.
A normal-looking file does not rule out a configuration problem, and a keyboard that works locally but fails in a remote session points away from a damaged local DLL. Keep those distinctions in mind as you test each step.
Step 1: Repair the Windows image and protected files
Windows includes two relevant repair tools. Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) repairs the Windows component store, while System File Checker (SFC) checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies from that store. Run DISM first so SFC has a usable source.

Run DISM from an elevated Command Prompt
- Open Start and type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run the standard online image-repair command for your Windows build:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth - Let the operation reach 100 percent. It can pause for a while; do not close the window just because progress appears unchanged.
- Read the final message. A successful completion means DISM finished its operation; it does not by itself prove that KBDJPN.DLL is fixed.
Command syntax and available servicing options can vary by Windows release and recovery environment. If the online command reports that the source cannot be found, use the recovery or installation media procedure appropriate to your exact build rather than substituting a DLL downloaded from the internet.
Run SFC after DISM
- In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:
sfc /scannow - Wait for verification to reach 100 percent.
- Restart Windows even if SFC reports that it found no violations. The restart reloads the keyboard components and language services.
SFC may report that it repaired files, found no integrity violations, or could not repair some files. If it cannot repair KBDJPN.DLL, restart once, run the DISM command again, and repeat SFC. Persistent corruption is a reason to move to official recovery or installation media, not to copy a DLL from another computer.
Step 2: Reinstall or repair Japanese language features
If KBDJPN.DLL is readable and Windows does not show a system-file error, the Japanese language profile or Microsoft IME may be incomplete. Windows manages the Japanese keyboard through language settings, so repairing that profile can restore the layout without touching the file.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Time & language > Language & region.
- Find Japanese. Open its language options using the three-dot menu or the entry’s options control, depending on your Windows build.
- Review the installed language features, keyboard entries, and Microsoft IME. If a feature is missing or appears incomplete, remove Japanese from the language list, restart if Windows requests it, then add Japanese again and install its language features.
- Sign out of Windows and sign back in. A sign-out reloads the user language profile more completely than simply switching the input indicator.
After signing back in, select Japanese from the taskbar input indicator and test typing in a plain text editor. If the Japanese layout works locally but fails only in a remote desktop session, stop changing the local language profile and continue to the remote-session section below.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft’s current support notice. On an unsupported Windows 10 installation, language-feature repair may still be possible, but long-term reliability and security depend on moving to a supported Windows release when the hardware and organization’s policy allow it.

Step 3: Remove unexpected keyboard layouts
A healthy KBDJPN.DLL can appear to be broken when the user profile contains an unintended English or duplicate keyboard entry. Microsoft’s IME troubleshooting guidance recommends removing unexpected layouts through Windows Settings or PowerShell, then signing out and back in.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Use Settings first
- Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Open the options for each installed language.
- Under Keyboards, remove layouts you do not use, including duplicate entries that appeared after an update or remote-session setup.
- Keep the Japanese keyboard or Microsoft IME entry that you actually need.
- Sign out and sign back in, then test both the taskbar input indicator and the physical keyboard.
Inspect the profile with PowerShell
If Settings does not show why Windows keeps selecting the wrong layout, open PowerShell as an administrator and inspect the current language list:
Get-WinUserLanguageList
The output shows language tags and their input methods. Remove or reorder entries from Settings whenever possible. PowerShell can replace the list, but it is easy to remove a language accidentally; use a command only after recording the existing list and adapting the language tags to your account. For example, a profile that intentionally needs U.S. English and Japanese could be set with a language list containing en-US and ja-JP, but the exact order determines the preferred input language. Sign out after any change.
If the keyboard problem affects only one user account, compare that account with a newly created test account. A working test account points to a damaged or misconfigured language profile rather than a missing system DLL.
Step 4: Apply the registry workaround only to the documented remote-desktop case
Microsoft Japan’s Windows Technology Support Blog documents a specific workaround for keyboard redirection when connecting from a MacBook to Windows 365 or Azure Virtual Desktop through RDP. In that scenario, the documented change is:

Before: KBDJPN.DLL; after: KBD106.DLL.
This is not a general repair for a corrupt KBDJPN.DLL. Do not make the change on a normal local Windows installation merely because the file error mentions Japanese input.
Back up the key
- Sign in with an administrator account.
- Open an elevated Command Prompt.
- Export the relevant registry key before editing it:
reg export "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlKeyboard Layouts 0000411" "%USERPROFILE%Desktopkeyboard-layout-00000411.reg" - Confirm that the
.regbackup file was created on the desktop or another protected location.
Change the Layout File value
- Press Win+R, type
regedit, and press Enter. Approve User Account Control. - Browse to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlKeyboard Layouts 0000411. - Locate the string value named Layout File.
- Change its data from
KBDJPN.DLLtoKBD106.DLL, exactly as documented for the remote-redirection scenario. - Close Registry Editor, sign out of the remote Windows session, and make a new connection.
Registry editing has a higher risk than changing a language profile. A typo, an edit to the wrong key, or applying this workaround outside the documented remote scenario can create a different keyboard problem. If the change does not help, restore the exported key or change the value back to KBDJPN.DLL, then sign out and reconnect.
Step 5: Decide whether Windows recovery or reinstallation is necessary
Escalate when the file remains zero bytes, Windows continues to report 0xc0000020, DISM and SFC cannot repair the component, or the error returns after a restart. Use official Windows recovery or installation media that matches the installed edition and architecture.
Repair installation
An official setup process may offer a repair or in-place installation path. Read each screen carefully and choose the option that preserves applications and personal files only when it is explicitly offered for your edition and build. Back up first anyway. The goal is to replace damaged Windows components while keeping the existing installation, but availability depends on the media and the state of Windows.

A clean installation removes the existing Windows installation and is therefore the most disruptive option. Use it only after backing up files, confirming that you have installation media and activation information, and checking that required drivers and applications are available. The Microsoft Q&A case involving a zero-byte KBDJPN.DLL and error 0xc0000020 records a clean installation as the step that restored operation after earlier repairs failed.

After reinstalling Windows, install updates, add Japanese under Settings > Time & language > Language & region, and test the Japanese IME before restoring optional software. If the problem returns immediately, investigate storage health, failed updates, or an organization-managed image instead of repeatedly replacing the same file.
Choose the least disruptive remedy that matches the symptom
| Remedy | Best fit | Risk and disruption | Reversible? |
|---|---|---|---|
| DISM followed by SFC | Missing, unreadable, or corrupted Windows component | Low compared with reinstalling; requires an elevated console and a restart | Windows performs the repair; there is no manual DLL replacement to undo |
| Remove and re-add Japanese language features | Japanese IME or keyboard profile is incomplete | Low; language preferences may need to be configured again | Yes, by adding the language and keyboard again |
| Remove unexpected keyboard entries | Wrong layout selected while the DLL is healthy | Low; can affect the current user’s input choices | Yes, by adding the layout again |
Change Layout File to KBD106.DLL |
MacBook-to-Windows 365 or Azure Virtual Desktop RDP redirection case documented by Microsoft Japan | Higher; registry editing requires administrator rights | Yes, if the key was backed up or the value is restored |
| Repair installation or clean installation | Persistent component-store damage that servicing cannot repair | Repair installation can be disruptive; clean installation is the highest-disruption option | Not in the ordinary sense; restore from backups if data or applications are removed |
Verification and common failure points
Verify the file after repair
- Confirm that
C:WindowsSystem32KBDJPN.DLLexists and is no longer zero bytes. - Restart Windows, sign in, select Japanese from the input indicator, and type in a basic text editor.
- Test both the physical keyboard and the on-screen language switch. A successful file repair does not automatically remove an unwanted keyboard entry.
If DISM cannot find source files
Do not point DISM at a random DLL. Use recovery or installation media that corresponds to the installed Windows release, or obtain help from the device administrator for the correct source. Mixing editions or builds can leave the component store inconsistent.
If only remote sessions fail
Compare local and remote behavior before changing Windows files. A local Japanese keyboard that works normally, combined with failure only in RDP, Windows 365, or Azure Virtual Desktop, is evidence for a redirection or profile issue. The registry workaround above applies only to the documented MacBook remote-desktop scenario.
