How to Fix jit.dll Missing Errors on Windows 10 and 11

A jit.dll error usually points to an old application that expects the obsolete Microsoft Java Virtual Machine, not to a current Windows component that can be downloaded separately. The safest fix is to repair or reinstall the program named in the error. If the message actually refers to mscorjit.dll, clrjit.dll or Java’s jvm.dll, use the repair method for that different runtime instead.

Do not download a random DLL, copy it into System32 or run regsvr32 jit.dll. Those actions can install the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit build, leave dependencies missing and make diagnosis harder.

What jit.dll is—and why the exact filename matters

The filename jit.dll most commonly identifies the Just-In-Time compiler used by the obsolete Microsoft Java Virtual Machine. It is a legacy, 32-bit-era runtime component. Current Windows releases do not provide a supported, standalone Microsoft jit.dll redistributable.

Filename in the dialog Runtime identity What the distinction means
jit.dll Legacy Microsoft Java Virtual Machine JIT component Unsupported on current Windows; an application that truly requires it normally needs a vendor update, replacement software or an isolated legacy environment.
mscorjit.dll Older .NET Framework JIT component Investigate the .NET Framework installation and the application that uses it.
clrjit.dll JIT component used by newer .NET runtimes Follow the repair path for the installed .NET runtime, not the legacy Microsoft Java path.
jvm.dll Modern Java virtual machine component Repair or reinstall the Java distribution required by the application; it does not supply legacy jit.dll.

Read the complete error before changing anything. “The code execution cannot proceed because jit.dll was not found” is materially different from a message naming mscorjit.dll, clrjit.dll or jvm.dll. A one-character difference can send you to the wrong runtime and the wrong repair.

What the error can actually mean

Windows’ loader reports a “module not found” condition when it cannot load the requested module and its dependencies. The named file may be absent, but the same message can result from a dependent file being absent, a damaged installation, or an architecture mismatch between the program and the runtime. Replacing one file therefore does not reliably solve the underlying problem.

  • Incomplete or damaged application installation: setup may have omitted a runtime file, or an update may have left mixed versions.
  • Application data or registry damage: corrupted data can prevent a program from installing, updating or starting.
  • Wrong runtime assumption: a program may be asking for the obsolete Microsoft Java VM while you install an unrelated modern Java or .NET runtime.
  • 32-bit/64-bit mismatch: a historical 32-bit component cannot be substituted blindly with a 64-bit file, and a matching filename from another build may still require different dependencies.
  • Unsupported legacy software: the application may have been written for an environment that modern Windows no longer supports.

Before changing files, identify the program and runtime

  1. Copy the full dialog text. Record the exact filename, including its extension and spelling. Note whether the error appears when Windows starts, when you install the program, or only when you launch a particular executable.
  2. Identify the launching application. Write down its name, version if shown, and the complete path of the executable. If the message appears during setup, keep the installer name and source.
  3. Record your Windows edition. Note whether you are using Windows 10 or Windows 11 and whether the affected program is known to be 32-bit. This information helps the software vendor determine compatibility.
  4. Compare the filename with the table above. Do not apply a legacy-VM fix to a .NET or modern Java error. If the text is ambiguous, take a screenshot and check the application’s own documentation before proceeding.

These notes are valuable if repair fails: they let you return to the exact program and installer instead of trying unrelated DLL packages.

Fix 1: repair the application that reports jit.dll

Repairing the named application is the safest first action because the installer knows which files, dependencies and architecture belong together. Microsoft’s Windows app repair and reset options are designed for incomplete installs, corrupted app data and related launch problems.

Use the application’s own Repair or Change command

  1. Open Windows Settings and go to the installed-apps list. The label is Installed apps on current Windows 11 builds and Apps & features on many Windows 10 builds.
  2. Select the program that produces the error. If it offers Advanced options, choose Repair first. Repair attempts to restore the installation without deleting personal application data.
  3. Restart Windows and launch the program again. Test the same action that originally produced the dialog.
  4. If Repair is unavailable or changes nothing, use the application vendor’s original installer and choose Repair or Change when offered. Use an installer from the software vendor rather than a third-party DLL site.

Reset only when repair is insufficient

Some Windows apps provide a Reset option in the same settings page. Reset can remove local app data and restore defaults, so save or export any data the application stores locally before selecting it. Resetting a modern app will not recreate an unsupported Microsoft Java VM; it is useful only when the application itself is the damaged component.

Fix 2: uninstall and reinstall from a known-good installer

If repair cannot restore the files, perform a clean reinstall of the affected application.

  1. Back up the application’s documents, profiles, license information and custom settings.
  2. Uninstall the program from Windows Settings or its own uninstaller.
  3. Restart Windows if the uninstaller requests it, or if the program was running as a background process.
  4. Download or retrieve the installer from the software vendor or the original installation media. Confirm that it supports your Windows edition and processor architecture.
  5. Run the installer and test the application before restoring optional plug-ins or old configuration files.

Windows’ Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter is an appropriate next step when an installation will not complete, an old entry cannot be removed, or registry data blocks installation, removal or updates. It addresses installation and uninstallation records; it does not turn an unsupported legacy runtime into a supported one.

Fix 3: follow the .NET path when the dialog names .NET

A .NET application can fail to start when the required framework is missing or corrupted. Microsoft notes that unresolved .NET startup failures can also involve a damaged file system, missing dependencies or a problem in the application itself.

Confirm that the file is a .NET file

Use this path only when the message names mscorjit.dll, clrjit.dll, a specific .NET Framework version, or otherwise clearly identifies .NET. A dialog that says only jit.dll most commonly refers to the obsolete Microsoft Java VM instead.

Repair the existing .NET Framework installation

  1. Identify the .NET Framework version requested by the application or its installer.
  2. Obtain the original installation source or the official installation media for that version.
  3. Use Windows Installer repair procedures to repair the existing .NET Framework installation from that source, following Microsoft’s documented steps for the applicable Windows edition.
  4. Restart Windows and test the application again.

Do not expect installing a modern Java runtime to provide a .NET JIT file, and do not expect a .NET repair to provide the legacy Microsoft jit.dll. The runtime identity in the error determines the remedy.

Fix 4: check for dependency and architecture problems

If reinstalling the application does not help, treat the dialog as a loader or compatibility problem rather than proof that one file is missing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check whether the application is a 32-bit program running on a 64-bit edition of Windows. A 32-bit-era dependency may be required even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
  • Check the executable path and the application’s installation directory for mixed files left by an older version. Do not delete or replace files unless the vendor’s installer or support instructions identify them.
  • Look for a dependency message in the application’s own log or installer log. A missing secondary module can produce the same “module not found” wording.
  • Try the vendor’s current release. If the vendor has retired the application, ask whether a supported build removes the Microsoft Java VM requirement.

Architecture mismatch is a common reason that a downloaded file appears to be present yet the program still fails. The loader must be able to load the entire dependency chain, not merely find a file with the expected name.

Why downloading jit.dll or registering it is not a fix

Random DLL download sites

A downloaded DLL may be the wrong architecture, an unrelated historical build, modified by an unknown party, or dependent on additional files you do not have. It can also overwrite a file that belongs to a different application. Because current Windows systems have no supported standalone Microsoft jit.dll redistributable, a download site cannot provide an authoritative replacement.

Copying into System32 or SysWOW64

Copying a file into a system directory bypasses the application’s installer and can create version conflicts. It does not install the rest of the runtime, repair registry data or resolve missing dependencies. It can also make later troubleshooting less clear by leaving files outside the application’s managed installation.

Running regsvr32 jit.dll

regsvr32 is intended for registering supported COM or ActiveX libraries that expose the required registration entry points. Microsoft does not document the legacy jit.dll as a general COM registration target. Running the command can therefore produce another error without fixing the launch problem. Use the application installer or the runtime’s documented repair process instead.

When the software itself is obsolete

If the exact error is for legacy jit.dll and the application truly requires the Microsoft Java Virtual Machine, modern Windows may not be able to provide a supported repair. Contact the software vendor and ask for an updated build or a supported replacement.

If you must access data from the old program, consider an isolated legacy environment approved by your organization, with no unnecessary network exposure and with backups of the data you need. Treat that as a compatibility workaround, not as a way to make the obsolete runtime supported on your everyday Windows installation. Installing unrelated modern Java or .NET software will not supply jit.dll.

Use this decision guide after each attempt

What you observe Next action
The dialog names jit.dll and one old application fails. Repair or reinstall that application. Ask the vendor for a supported update; if none exists, plan a replacement or isolated legacy environment.
The dialog names mscorjit.dll, clrjit.dll or a .NET Framework version. Repair the named .NET installation from the original source, then repair or reinstall the application.
The dialog names jvm.dll. Repair or reinstall the Java distribution required by that application. Do not search for legacy jit.dll.
Reinstalling leaves the same message. Investigate dependencies, 32-bit/64-bit compatibility and vendor support. The message may describe a dependency or architecture failure, not a missing primary file.
Installation or removal is blocked. Use Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter, then rerun the vendor installer.

How to verify that the problem is resolved

  1. Restart Windows after the final repair or reinstall.
  2. Launch the same executable that originally produced the dialog.
  3. Repeat the operation that triggered the failure, such as opening a project or loading a document.
  4. Confirm that the application does not immediately show a second missing-module message. A new filename identifies a different dependency and should be handled separately.
  5. Keep the installer version and the recorded executable path with your troubleshooting notes in case the vendor needs them.

If the application still requires legacy jit.dll after these steps, stop replacing files and seek a supported application build or replacement. Continuing to add DLLs from unverified sources increases the chance of an incompatible or unsafe installation without addressing the obsolete runtime requirement.

As an optional shortcut after the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects and shared DLL problems, while also offering settings tweaks, temporary and cache cleanup, privacy warnings, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; its category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no utility repairs every crash.
