Start with the least disruptive checks: turn Bluetooth on, manually select the saved JBL entry, and make sure another phone is not holding the connection. If charging is unreliable or an earbud switches on and starts pairing by itself, clean the charging contacts and case pins. Only after those checks fail should you factory-reset the Live Beam 4; JBL’s reset clears settings and Bluetooth data, so you must pair the earbuds again.
Identify which connection problem you have
“Won’t connect” and “keeps disconnecting” can have different triggers. Use the symptom that matches what you see to choose the first check instead of resetting immediately.

| Observed symptom | Start with | Why this comes first |
|---|---|---|
| The earbuds appear in the phone’s Bluetooth list but do not become connected | Turn Bluetooth on and select the remembered JBL entry manually | JBL distinguishes a remembered pairing from the active connection; a saved relationship does not always reconnect automatically |
| A phone or tablet used previously may still be connected | Disconnect that device or temporarily turn its Bluetooth off | JBL says another connected phone can prevent reconnection |
| An earbud charges intermittently, powers on unexpectedly, or begins pairing without you asking | Inspect and clean the earbud contacts and case pins | JBL identifies dirty true-wireless contacts as a possible cause of interrupted charging and unintended power-on behavior, including for Live Beam 4 |
| The problem remains after source and charging checks | Use the Live Series factory-reset procedure | The reset is supported for Live Beam 4 but removes stored settings and Bluetooth data |
1. Reconnect from the source device
Begin with the phone, tablet, computer, or other source rather than changing the earbuds’ stored data. Keep the earbuds near the source while you work and avoid starting a reset until these checks are complete.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsConfirm Bluetooth is enabled
Open the source device’s Bluetooth settings and verify that Bluetooth is switched on. If it was just enabled, wait for the list of devices to populate. Look for the saved JBL entry and tap it to request a connection. JBL’s general Bluetooth guidance describes pairing as the remembered relationship between two devices and connection as the live link; therefore, seeing a JBL name in the list does not prove that an active audio link exists.

Select the saved JBL entry manually
If the Live Beam 4 is listed under saved or previously connected devices, choose that entry instead of waiting for an automatic reconnection. Watch for the status to change to connected. This manual attempt is reversible and does not erase the pairing record.
Release the earbuds from another phone or tablet
Consider every phone, tablet, or computer that has used the earbuds recently. If one might still be connected, disconnect the JBL earbuds there. When you cannot reach that device, turn its Bluetooth off temporarily, then retry the connection on the intended source. JBL warns that another connected phone may block reconnection, so this check can resolve an apparent failure without changing any settings.
Do not confuse disconnecting with forgetting
Disconnecting a device ends the current link while keeping the remembered pairing. Forgetting, unpairing, or removing the JBL entry deletes the source’s pairing record and means the devices must be paired again. Reserve that more disruptive action for the re-pairing stage after a factory reset or when the saved record is clearly unusable.

When to choose this step
- An earbud shows inconsistent charging in the case.
- An earbud turns on even though you put it away.
- The earbuds appear to start pairing on their own.
- One side repeatedly drops out after spending time in the case.
These signs make contact inspection more relevant than an immediate factory reset. Dirty contacts are not established as the cause of every Bluetooth fault, so clean them when the charging or unexpected-power symptoms are present.
Clean the earbud contacts and case pins
- Remove both earbuds from the case and inspect the small metal charging contacts on each earbud and the matching pins or contacts inside the case.
- Use a clean cotton swab to gently rub away visible residue. JBL’s instructions mention rubbing alcohol as an aid for this cleaning.
- If you use rubbing alcohol, apply only enough to dampen the swab; do not flood the earbud or the case.
- Leave the case open until its interior is completely dry. JBL specifically says the case interior must be completely dry before you close it.
- Return the earbuds to the case and check whether they begin charging normally and remain powered off when stored.
The purpose of this step is to restore reliable electrical contact. It is not a universal Bluetooth remedy, and it does not replace the source-device checks above.
Use the result to choose the next step
If charging becomes consistent and the earbuds stop switching on unexpectedly, retry the manual Bluetooth connection. If the charging symptoms remain after careful cleaning and complete drying, note that pattern when you contact JBL; repeated power changes can make a connection appear to drop even when the radio link is not the original problem.
3. Factory-reset the Live Beam 4 only after simpler checks fail
JBL’s Live Series reset article explicitly names the Live Beam 4. The reset is appropriate when manual reconnection and contact cleaning have not resolved the fault, but it is more disruptive than either check because it removes the earbuds’ stored state.

Reset with the earbuds
- Take either earbud and tap it three times.
- On the third tap, press and hold for more than five seconds.
- JBL says the earbuds will power off and be factory-reset.
The timing matters: the hold occurs on the third tap, and it must last longer than five seconds. Use either the left or right earbud; JBL’s Live Series procedure allows either side.
Reset from the JBL Headphone app
If the earbuds are available in the compatible JBL Headphone app, open the app and follow Support > Reset to Factory Setting > Reset. This is the app route documented by JBL for the Live Series.
Understand what the reset removes
JBL states: “This action will erase all settings and Bluetooth data from the device.” Treat the reset as a clean start, not as a temporary reconnect command. Sound preferences and other stored settings are removed, and the earbuds no longer retain their Bluetooth data. The source device may still display an old JBL entry, but that entry may no longer work until the earbuds are paired again.

After the reset, enable Bluetooth on the source and open its Bluetooth settings. If an old JBL entry remains and the source refuses to connect, use the source’s forget or unpair command, then scan again and select the newly available JBL entry. Forgetting is useful here because it clears the phone-side record that can conflict with the reset earbuds.

The available JBL pairing material is general guidance rather than a Live Beam 4-specific initial-pairing procedure. It supports selecting the JBL entry from the source’s Bluetooth list, but it does not establish a guaranteed model-specific gesture for entering pairing mode. Follow the on-screen prompts and the current Live Beam 4 instructions supplied by JBL for that initial discovery step rather than assuming a generic gesture applies.
Verify one source before adding another
Complete the first post-reset connection with one phone or other source. Play audio and observe whether the link remains active. If you immediately enable Bluetooth on another previously used device, that device may take the connection and make the first source appear to disconnect. Add other sources only after the intended connection is stable, and release any device that should not be connected.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Diagnose repeated disconnections without guessing
If the earbuds still disconnect, use the pattern of the failure to decide what to test next. The documented guidance supports source selection, competing-device checks, contact cleaning, and the Live Series reset. It does not document a separate Live Beam 4 firmware cure or a complete model-specific repeated-disconnection sequence.
They disconnect as soon as another device is nearby
Return to the competing-device check. Turn Bluetooth off on the other phone or tablet and connect the Live Beam 4 manually to the intended source. If the connection then stays active, the issue was a device-ownership conflict rather than a need to erase the earbuds’ settings.

They disconnect after being placed in the case
Inspect the charging contacts and case pins. An earbud that does not make reliable contact can remain powered or switch on again, which JBL says can start the pairing process unexpectedly. Clean with a cotton swab, use rubbing alcohol only as described in JBL’s cleaning instructions, and keep the case open until fully dry before closing it.
They never become connected even though the JBL name is saved
Check that Bluetooth is on, select the saved JBL entry manually, and make sure no other phone is connected. If these reversible checks fail, reset the earbuds and then remove the stale phone-side entry if necessary before pairing again.
The failure continues after a complete reset and fresh pairing
Record what happens: whether one or both earbuds drop, whether the case was involved, and whether another device was nearby. Do not claim that a particular firmware version will fix it; the consulted JBL material does not document a Live Beam 4 firmware version or model-specific firmware remedy for disconnections. Move to JBL support with the observed pattern and the steps already completed.

- The three-tap gesture followed by a hold of more than five seconds is supported by a JBL Live Series article that specifically includes Live Beam 4.
- The charging-contact advice is explicitly applicable to Live Beam 4 when charging is intermittent or an earbud powers on unexpectedly.
- The Bluetooth pairing instructions are general JBL guidance. They explain manual reconnection and the effect of another connected phone, but they do not establish the exact initial pairing gesture for Live Beam 4.
- No consulted material supplies a Live Beam 4 firmware version or a model-specific firmware fix for repeated disconnections.
Keeping these boundaries in mind prevents a generic instruction from being presented as a guaranteed Live Beam 4 cure.
Choose the least disruptive action first
| Action | Reversibility | Use it when | Data impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| Turn Bluetooth on and select the saved JBL entry | Fully reversible | The earbuds are listed but not actively connected | Does not erase pairing data |
| Disconnect another phone or turn its Bluetooth off temporarily | Fully reversible | A previously used device may own the active link | Does not erase the earbuds’ settings |
| Clean contacts and case pins with a cotton swab | Reversible | Charging is intermittent or an earbud powers on unexpectedly | Does not erase Bluetooth data |
| Factory-reset from the earbuds | Disruptive | Simpler checks fail | Erases settings and Bluetooth data; pairing is required again |
| Factory-reset in the JBL Headphone app | Disruptive | The app recognizes the earbuds and you prefer the app path | Erases settings and Bluetooth data; pairing is required again |
When to contact JBL
Escalate when the Live Beam 4 still will not connect after the source checks, contact inspection, and documented reset, or when it repeatedly loses connection after a fresh pairing with other devices released. JBL’s headphone guidance directs Bluetooth problems to its Bluetooth Pairing Guide and reset questions to its Reset Guide. Tell support which source you used, whether another phone was disabled, whether charging was intermittent, whether you cleaned and dried the contacts, and whether the three-tap reset completed. Those details help separate a source-device conflict from a charging or earbud-state problem.
Check JBL’s current support pages for any newer model-specific advisories before relying on firmware claims or a newly published procedure. The available material does not establish a particular firmware version for Live Beam 4.
Quick Recap
Practical checklist
- Turn Bluetooth on at the intended source.
- Select the remembered JBL entry manually.
- Disconnect or disable Bluetooth on any other phone or tablet that may be connected.
- If charging is unreliable or an earbud starts pairing by itself, clean the earbud contacts and case pins with a cotton swab.
- If rubbing alcohol is used during cleaning, leave the case open until its interior is completely dry.
- Only after those checks fail, triple-tap either earbud and hold on the third tap for more than five seconds, or use Support > Reset to Factory Setting > Reset in the JBL Headphone app.
- After resetting, forget the old phone-side entry if needed and pair the earbuds again using JBL’s current Live Beam 4 instructions.
- If disconnections continue, document the pattern and contact JBL rather than assuming an unverified firmware fix.
