To fix a JavaScript compatibility issue, first reproduce it in the browser and version where it occurs, then identify whether the cause is a code defect, unsupported syntax, a missing Web API, or a browser implementation difference. Check compatibility for that exact feature, use a capability check and suitable fallback or polyfill when needed, and test the change across the browsers and devices your audience uses. Avoid choosing a fix based only on a browser name or user-agent string.
Start by identifying what is actually failing
JavaScript that works in one browser but not another does not automatically mean either browser is at fault. A syntax error, incorrect assumption about execution order, or ordinary logic bug can look like a compatibility problem. Compatibility differences can also arise because browsers add support at different times, implement features differently, or have bugs.
Before changing code, write down the action that triggers the problem, what you expected, what happened instead, and the browser, version, operating system, and device involved. Note whether it happens every time or only under particular conditions. Reproduce the issue in the affected browser so you can tell whether a change fixes the actual failure.
- Open the developer console and look for parse errors, exceptions, failed requests, and relevant warnings.
- Use the debugger to step through the failing path and inspect the values that lead to the unexpected result.
- Compare the failing behavior with a browser where the feature works, focusing on the same action and application state.
MDN recommends checking general JavaScript problems as part of compatibility troubleshooting, rather than assuming the browser is the cause. See MDN’s JavaScript troubleshooting guidance.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Rule out ordinary JavaScript defects
Check the code path before adding browser-specific conditions. In particular, verify that the code uses the intended syntax and values, that variables have the expected scope, and that no naming conflict or unexpected this binding is changing the result. Review closures and event-handler assumptions if a value appears to belong to the wrong call or object.
Also check timing. If code uses a promise, event, timer, or network response, confirm that the result is ready before the next operation depends on it. Different performance or event timing can expose a race that happened to stay hidden in another browser. Confirm that the request succeeds and that the code handles its failure path.
Only treat the issue as a compatibility gap once you can connect it to a specific missing feature or browser behavior. Adding a workaround before that point can mask the underlying bug and create new differences elsewhere.
Find the exact unsupported feature or API
Separate JavaScript language syntax from runtime capabilities. A browser might fail to parse syntax that your source uses, or it might parse the code but lack a Web API or method called at runtime. A transpiler can transform syntax for a selected language target; it does not automatically supply every runtime API your application calls.

Look up the exact language feature or API, not a broad label such as “modern JavaScript.” MDN’s browser-compat-data project covers JavaScript language features and Web APIs, and its compatibility details change as browsers ship features, standards change, and bugs are discovered. Check the specific browser versions you support when making a decision; old examples that use Internet Explorer may be historical rather than a guide to current support.
For each feature, answer two separate questions:
- Can the target browser parse the syntax in the code you deliver?
- Does the target browser provide the API and behavior the code needs at runtime?
That distinction determines whether you need a build-target change, a runtime fallback, a polyfill, or a different implementation. No transpiler or polyfill is a universal compatibility switch.
Choose a remedy that preserves the user task
Use feature detection for capability decisions
Check for the actual property, method, or API your code needs, then choose a supported path. The check should match the capability: checking for one property does not prove that a different method or behavior is available.
if ('geolocation' in navigator) {
navigator.geolocation.getCurrentPosition(showPosition, showLocationError);
} else {
showStaticMap();
}
This example checks whether the browser exposes geolocation and uses a simpler alternative if it does not. The fallback should still let the user complete a useful version of the task where possible. MDN illustrates this kind of alternative, and advises against relying on user-agent parsing for functionality decisions: browser detection using the user-agent string.

Use a polyfill only when it fits the gap
A polyfill can provide an API that a target browser lacks, but verify that it implements the behavior your application requires in that browser. Consider its maintenance, download size, and performance cost. A polyfill cannot correct every browser bug or guarantee identical behavior for every feature.
Consider an alternative implementation or a reduced feature
Sometimes a simpler implementation is more reliable than reproducing a complex API. If the enhanced experience is not essential on an older browser, a deliberate, documented decision not to support that target may be safer than accumulating compatibility code. Base that decision on your audience and product requirements.
Reserve browser-specific workarounds for demonstrated differences
If a particular browser has a confirmed implementation bug, isolate the workaround, explain why it exists, and test it in both affected and unaffected browsers. Avoid browser-name branches as a shortcut: they can outlive the bug, miss other browsers with the same capability gap, or catch browsers whose names appear in overlapping user-agent strings.
Test the change against your real browser targets
Choose target browsers and versions from audience needs and project requirements, rather than trying to support every browser ever released. Include the relevant desktop browsers, such as Firefox, Safari, Chrome, and Edge, and the mobile platforms your users rely on. Expand that list if the affected feature or audience warrants it.

Test small changes as you develop them instead of postponing all cross-browser checks until the end. MDN’s introduction to cross-browser testing recommends testing each small part before committing it. When you cannot access every physical device, emulators and virtual machines can widen coverage. When choosing real devices or hosted and emulated environments, compare how closely they represent actual hardware, which browser and operating-system versions they provide, whether tests can be repeated or automated easily, and the cost. No single approach is best for every team.
Use a repeatable regression check
- Keep a short record of the failing action, expected result, actual result, and environment.
- Make the smallest targeted change that addresses the confirmed cause.
- Repeat the original reproduction steps in the affected browser and version.
- Run the same check in other supported targets to catch regressions from the fallback or workaround.
- Keep the test in your normal development or release process if the behavior is important to users.
Feature detection is safer than user-agent sniffing
Feature detection asks whether the needed capability exists. User-agent sniffing tries to infer the browser from a string supplied with a request. A browser’s brand does not prove that a particular feature is available: versions differ, strings can contain overlapping identifiers, and they can be changed or spoofed. For application behavior, test the capability and provide a fallback rather than selecting code solely from a browser name. MDN explains these limitations in its user-agent detection guidance.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot of a page for a visual check or record, ScreenshotNeo can capture a URL through one GET request. A screenshot is not a substitute for running JavaScript tests across your supported browser versions, but it can avoid setting up a local browser just to capture a page.
Install Python’s requests package if needed, then run this complete example (replace the URL with your page):

Frequently Asked Questions
Does transpiling JavaScript make it compatible with every browser?
No. Transpilation can transform syntax for a selected language target, but runtime APIs need separate compatibility checks and may require a fallback or polyfill.
Can I use a screenshot API to verify that JavaScript works across browsers?
A screenshot can show a page’s rendered appearance, but it does not replace testing the behavior in the target browsers and versions. Use the browser-testing workflow in the article for functional compatibility.
