If Windows 10 says iTunes has an invalid signature, it will not be installed, stop using that installer. The message means Windows cannot verify the package’s publisher or confirm that the file is intact. The safest supported fix is to install the current Windows 10 version of iTunes through the Microsoft Store, after signing in with administrator access, installing pending Windows updates, checking for security-software interference, and restarting the PC.
Do not disable signature protection or download a repackaged copy from an old mirror. A failed signature check is an integrity and trust warning, not a routine nuisance dialog.

What an invalid iTunes signature means
A digital signature is attached to an installer or update package by its publisher. Windows checks that signature to establish two things: who signed the file and whether the package changed after signing. When either check fails, Windows cannot establish trust in the download.
Microsoft explains that Smart App Control treats an unsigned application or one with an invalid signature as untrusted and blocks it for protection. Microsoft’s deployment guidance also lists missing or invalid signatures as package-installation failures. Apple’s software-update certificate policy gives the same safety outcome: a package with a bad signature should not be installed and the user should be notified.

The wording does not prove that Apple’s software is malicious. It does mean that this particular package, in its current state, cannot be authenticated. The file may be incomplete, damaged, out of date, obtained from an unsuitable source, or affected by a local security check. Because you cannot distinguish those cases safely from the warning alone, treat the installer as unusable until you obtain a valid package.
Why Windows 10 may show the warning
A damaged or incomplete download
An interrupted download can leave an installer that looks complete in File Explorer but fails its cryptographic check. Repeating the installation from the same saved file usually repeats the failure; obtain a fresh package instead.
An old distribution path
Older iTunes installers circulated as standalone downloads. Their certificate chain, update mechanism, or Windows compatibility may no longer match the package Apple currently supports for Windows 10. A file found on a third-party mirror also has an uncertain chain of custody, even when its filename resembles an Apple installer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSecurity software interference
Apple identifies security software as a possible cause of installation failures. Antivirus or endpoint-protection software can quarantine, scan, lock, or alter a temporary installer file while setup is running. That can make a package fail validation or prevent the Store installation from completing.
A system-level trust failure
Windows performs the signature check; iTunes cannot override it. If Windows itself is missing updates or a security component is malfunctioning, a correctly published package can still fail locally. This is why updating Windows and using the current Store distribution come before experimenting with advanced settings.
Use this supported repair sequence
Follow the steps in order. They are reversible, and each one removes a common cause without weakening Windows’ security boundary.
1. Sign in with administrator access
- Save your work and sign in to a Windows account that has administrator privileges.
- If you are unsure, open Settings > Accounts > Your info. An administrator account is identified there as Administrator.
- Restarting setup from a standard account can produce permission errors that look unrelated to the signature warning, so use the administrator account for the entire installation attempt.
Apple’s installation guidance specifically tells Windows users to make sure they are logged in as an administrator before installing or updating iTunes.
2. Install every pending Windows 10 update
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all offered updates, including any servicing or security updates, and restart when Windows requests it.
- Return to the same page after the restart and check again until Windows reports that the device is up to date or no further updates are offered.
Apple places Windows updates near the beginning of its current troubleshooting checklist because the Store client, certificate validation components, and installation services depend on a supported Windows environment.
3. Install iTunes from the Microsoft Store
- Open the Microsoft Store from the Start menu.
- Search for iTunes and choose the listing published for Apple’s Windows software. Avoid results that are merely download pages, archives, or repackaged installers.
- Select Get or Install, then allow the Store to download the package.
- When installation completes, open the Store’s Library and use Get updates so the Store can check for a current iTunes update.
For Windows 10, Apple directs users to the latest supported iTunes for Windows through the Microsoft Store and tells them to check for updates there. The Store route gives you a current, official distribution path instead of asking you to trust an old executable saved elsewhere.
4. Test for a security-software conflict
- Identify antivirus, endpoint protection, web-download filtering, or similar security software installed on the PC.
- Read that product’s vendor instructions for temporarily pausing protection during a software installation. Do not delete security components or leave protection disabled longer than necessary.
- Pause only the conflicting protection, retry the Microsoft Store installation, and observe whether the behavior changes.
- Immediately restore protection after the test. If the installation succeeds only while protection is paused, contact that security product’s support team for a permitted exception or a permanent fix.
Apple says security software can prevent installation and may need to be temporarily disabled or uninstalled according to the vendor’s guidance. The goal is diagnosis, not permanent bypassing of security controls.
5. Restart, then retry once
- Close iTunes, the Microsoft Store, and any installer windows.
- Use Start > Power > Restart; do not simply close the laptop lid.
- After Windows loads, open the Microsoft Store, go to Library, select Get updates, and retry iTunes.
A restart releases files held by an earlier failed attempt and reloads Windows installation services. Apple explicitly recommends restarting the PC and trying the installation again.

6. Escalate a persistent Store failure to Microsoft
If Windows is updated, you are using an administrator account, security software has been checked, and the Store still cannot install iTunes, use Microsoft Support for the Microsoft Store download or update failure. Apple directs users to Microsoft when Store installation or update problems remain because the Store transaction and its Windows services are Microsoft components.
When you contact support, record the exact message, whether it appeared during download or installation, the Windows 10 edition and build shown under Settings > System > About, and whether the attempt used the Microsoft Store. Those details let support separate a package-validation failure from a Store-service or account problem.

If you are deciding whether to keep troubleshooting an archived executable, compare the two routes on the issues that matter for a signature error.
| Factor | Microsoft Store route | Older direct installer |
|---|---|---|
| Publisher authenticity | Obtained through the official Microsoft Store listing for Apple’s Windows software. | Depends on where the file came from and whether the download was altered or repackaged. |
| Signature validity | The package is checked by Windows during installation; a failure should stop the install rather than be overridden. | An expired, damaged, or modified file can continue to trigger the invalid-signature message. |
| Update path | Use Microsoft Store > Library > Get updates. | Usually requires finding and downloading another installer manually. |
| Windows 10 compatibility | Apple’s current supported distribution for Windows 10. | Compatibility and support status vary by release; no current official support status is provided for an older file. |
| Recovery if validation fails | Remove the failed Store attempt and retry after updates, restart, or support. | Replacing the file with another mirror adds uncertainty and does not solve the trust problem. |
The table is not a recommendation to keep an old installer as a fallback. It shows why switching to the Store is the lower-risk response when Windows rejects a standalone package.

What “the download will be removed” means
Some users see a follow-up message that the iTunes download will be removed. In this situation, Windows or the Store is generally cleaning up a package that failed validation so it is not reused as though it were trustworthy. That message refers to the failed download or temporary package, not to personal music files or an already working iTunes installation.
Let the cleanup finish, restart the PC, and begin again from the Microsoft Store. Do not copy the rejected file back into the download folder or rename it to force another attempt; a new download is safer than reusing a package that Windows has already rejected.
Do not bypass the signature check
Do not disable Smart App Control or signature enforcement as a routine fix
Microsoft states that there is currently no way to bypass Smart App Control protection for one specific app. Its guidance is to use software signed with a valid certificate. Turning off broad protections to accommodate one installer weakens the security boundary for other applications and does not repair the package that failed validation.
Do not use an old mirror or repackaged executable
A mirror can change the file, preserve an outdated build, bundle unwanted software, or provide no reliable publisher chain. Even if that copy installs, you would have no sound basis for treating it as the same package Apple intended to distribute.
Do not treat a successful launch as proof of safety
An application opening after a warning does not prove its signature, origin, or integrity. Apple’s certificate policy says a bad signature should result in “Do not install, Notify user.” Follow that rule rather than judging a package by whether setup happens to complete.
Historical wording and why old advice can mislead
A Microsoft Community question dated March 28, 2013 preserves the exact wording itunes has an invalid signature, it will not be installed during an iTunes download or update attempt. That record helps identify the message readers remember, but its user-supplied workarounds are historical, not current installation authority.
For a Windows 10 repair today, use Apple’s current support procedure: administrator access, Windows updates, the Microsoft Store distribution, a check for security-software conflicts, a restart, and Microsoft support when the Store still fails. The age of the wording is a reason to avoid blindly applying a decade-old workaround, not a reason to weaken signature protection.
Quick Recap
A quick decision checklist
- Message appears on a downloaded executable: stop using that file and switch to the Microsoft Store.
- Store will not download: install Windows updates, restart, then try the Store again.
- Store download is removed: treat the package as failed validation; do not restore or rename it.
- Installation works only when antivirus is paused: restore protection and ask that vendor for a supported exception.
- All supported steps fail: contact Microsoft Support with the exact message and Windows build details.
