How to Fix iPhone Cellular Data, Calls, or SMS After a Carrier Update

A carrier-settings update and the “Cellular Settings Updated” notice are not the same thing. The notice is an automatic modem-configuration change that Apple says does not alter your plan or carrier settings and needs no action. If your iPhone now shows SOS, No Service, or Searching—or data, calls, or texts fail—identify the affected service, try the least disruptive checks first, and have your carrier verify provisioning, outages, and the SIM or eSIM before resetting the phone.

First, identify which update you saw

Many troubleshooting mistakes start with treating two different messages as one event.

“Cellular Settings Updated”

This notice refers to an automatic update to the iPhone’s cellular-modem configuration. Apple says those configurations help the phone connect to 2G, 3G, 4G/LTE, and 5G networks. The modem update does not change your data plan or carrier settings. Apple’s guidance is explicit: “There is no action required by you.” Do not keep reinstalling the modem update, and do not assume the notice canceled your plan.

A carrier-settings update

A carrier-settings update comes from your mobile provider. It can update network-related settings, improve connectivity and performance, and add features such as 5G or Wi-Fi Calling. A newly installed physical SIM or eSIM may also require the provider’s settings.

If you dismissed a carrier-update prompt, connect to Wi‑Fi or a working cellular connection and open Settings > General > About. Wait briefly on that screen. If an update is available, follow the on-screen prompt. The version shown in About is useful information when you later contact the carrier.

Use the symptom to choose the right path

A post-update problem is easier to diagnose when you separate the service that fails. Data, voice calls, and each message type use overlapping but different settings and network paths. The update appearing immediately before a failure does not, by itself, prove that it caused the failure.

What you see What it usually tells you to check first
SOS, No Service, or Searching Whether the iPhone is connected to any cellular network; then Airplane Mode, restart, software updates, coverage, outage, account status, and SIM/eSIM.
Cellular data fails, but calls work Cellular Data switch, selected data line, per-app data permission, roaming, and carrier data provisioning.
Calls fail or cannot be received Carrier account and outage checks, phone-line selection, software and carrier settings, and carrier-side call errors.
SMS fails but iMessage works Cellular connection, the active phone line, and carrier SMS support or provisioning.
iMessage, RCS, and MMS fail Wi‑Fi or cellular data, Messages settings, and whether the carrier supports the affected service.
Only one Dual SIM line fails Whether that line is present, enabled, selected for the affected service, and correctly provisioned.

Quick, low-risk recovery sequence

Use these steps in order when the status bar says SOS, No Service, or Searching, or when several cellular services stopped working. Test after each step so you know which change helped.

  1. Check your surroundings. Move outside or to a location where your provider normally has coverage. If other phones on the same provider also have no service, an outage is more likely than an iPhone setting.
  2. Toggle Airplane Mode. Open Control Center or Settings, turn Airplane Mode on, leave it on for at least 15 seconds, and turn it off. Wait for the network name or signal indicator to return.
  3. Restart the iPhone. Power it off normally, wait a moment, and turn it back on. A restart can make the phone register with the network again, but it cannot repair an account block or local outage.
  4. Install any available iOS update. Go to Settings > General > Software Update. Keep the iPhone connected to power and Wi‑Fi while an update installs.
  5. Check carrier settings. With Wi‑Fi or cellular connectivity available, open Settings > General > About. Install a carrier-settings update if iOS offers one.
  6. Retest each service separately. Try a web page, an outgoing call, an incoming call, an SMS, and an iMessage if applicable. Record exactly which tests fail.

On iOS 18 and later, the Apple Support app may offer additional diagnostics on supported iPhone models. Diagnostics can provide useful clues, but Apple does not promise that they identify every cause.

Fix cellular data that stopped working

Turn on cellular data and select the intended line

Open Settings > Cellular (called Mobile Data in some regions) and make sure Cellular Data is on. With Dual SIM, tap Cellular Data and select the line that should provide data. Also check that the line itself appears in Cellular settings and is switched on.

iOS can disable data for individual apps and services. In Settings > Cellular, scroll through the app list and enable data for the app that cannot connect. A browser that works over Wi‑Fi but not over cellular may simply have its cellular-data permission turned off.

Check roaming only when your situation requires it

If you are outside your carrier’s normal coverage region, open Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options and review Data Roaming. Roaming may be required to use data on another provider’s network. It can also create charges, depending on your plan and destination, so confirm the carrier’s terms before enabling it.

Do not guess an APN

Some carriers expose APN controls under cellular-data settings; others hide them. An APN tells the iPhone how to reach the provider’s data network. Apple warns that an incorrect APN can interrupt data connectivity or result in charges. Change APN fields only when your carrier or a device administrator gives you the exact values and instructions. Do not copy values from an unofficial list.

Interpret partial data failures

  • If Safari and several apps fail, but calls work, suspect the data line, carrier data provisioning, roaming, or an outage.
  • If only one app fails, check its cellular-data permission before changing network settings.
  • If data works on Wi‑Fi but not anywhere on cellular, capture the iPhone model, iOS version, carrier-settings version, location, and affected line for the carrier.

Fix calls that fail or cannot be received

Check the basic phone settings

Confirm that the intended line is enabled under Settings > Cellular. If you use Dual SIM, make sure the line is present and not accidentally turned off. Check that Airplane Mode is off and that the status bar shows a network connection rather than SOS, No Service, or Searching.

Install pending iOS and carrier-settings updates, then restart and test both an outgoing and an incoming call. A single successful outgoing call does not prove that inbound routing is fixed, so test both directions when possible.

  • What you get: 10 identical steel SIM ejector needles, one standard size that fits the eject hole of any phone or tablet with a physical SIM slot, so a spare is always within reach
  • Right for your device: Android and Samsung Galaxy phones, cellular iPads and tablets, and any iPhone that still uses a physical SIM, one needle works for all of them
  • How to use: push the needle straight into the small hole next to the SIM drawer until it pops open, then lift out the drawer, no force, twisting or technical skill needed
  • The difference vs paperclips: a rigid one piece steel needle holds its shape where bent wire flexes, so it presses the release cleanly without scratching or jamming the port
  • Ten spares, zero hunting: keep one at home, at the office, in the car, in your wallet and in every travel bag, and hand extras to family or coworkers who always lose theirs

Ask the carrier to check the network side

Apple’s call-troubleshooting guidance directs the carrier to verify that the account is set up to use the iPhone, that there is no local outage, and that billing or account controls have not blocked service. The carrier also needs to check whether calls are failing in its own systems. These checks cannot be completed from an iPhone setting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not change network mode, disable voice features, or force a particular 4G/5G option as a universal remedy. Available controls vary by iPhone model, carrier, and region. The carrier can tell you which voice and network features your line supports.

Fix SMS, iMessage, RCS, and MMS separately

Know which message type failed

Message type Connection it needs First checks
SMS A cellular network. With Wi‑Fi Calling enabled, SMS may be sent over Wi‑Fi. Network status, active phone line, and carrier SMS provisioning.
iMessage Wi‑Fi or cellular data. Data connection, Messages settings, and the phone number or Apple Account being used.
RCS Wi‑Fi or cellular data. Data connection and carrier support for RCS.
MMS Wi‑Fi or cellular data. Data connection, carrier MMS support, and the active line.

Green or blue bubbles do not establish that a carrier update caused the failure. A green message can be SMS, RCS, or MMS, while a blue bubble is iMessage. Confirm the intended phone line in Cellular settings, review relevant options in Settings > Apps > Messages (or Settings > Messages on older iOS versions), and test with both Wi‑Fi on and Wi‑Fi off when safe to do so.

For ongoing SMS, MMS, or RCS problems, Apple directs users to the carrier because support and provisioning for those services are provider-specific. If iMessage alone fails while ordinary data works, check Apple Account and Messages settings rather than assuming the cellular update is responsible.

Check a physical SIM or eSIM without losing service

Physical nano-SIM

If the SIM is missing or not recognized, power the iPhone down if possible, remove the tray, and inspect the card for damage, corrosion, or an incorrect fit. Reinsert it in the correct orientation and close the tray securely. A SIM-ejector tool is only a convenience for this check; it is not a repair.

Apple advises contacting the carrier for a replacement if the card is damaged, does not fit, or was transferred from another device and is not recognized. Do not keep forcing a card into the tray.

eSIM and Dual SIM

Open Settings > Cellular and verify that the expected eSIM or line is listed and turned on. If the line is absent, or the carrier needs to activate or reprovision it, only the carrier can complete that setup.

Do not delete an eSIM as routine troubleshooting. Apple’s reset guidance warns that deleting stored eSIMs means you must set up cellular service again. Deletion can leave you without a working line until the carrier issues a new activation method.

When and how to contact your carrier

The carrier is the authority for account status, plan provisioning, local outages and coverage, device bars or blocks, billing restrictions, supported messaging, SIM/eSIM activation, and call errors occurring in its network.

  • The affected phone line
  • Your approximate location and when the problem began

Ask the representative to check for an outage, billing or account block, device blacklist or bar, correct plan provisioning, SIM/eSIM status, support for the message type you use, and call or data errors on the network. This checklist does not guarantee that every provider exposes the same diagnostics, but it gives support enough detail to separate a handset setting from a carrier-side fault.

When Apple service becomes appropriate

If the carrier confirms that your account, plan, SIM/eSIM, coverage, and local network are working, hardware becomes more plausible. Apple says device service may be needed in that situation. On iOS 18 or later, the Apple Support app may run additional diagnostics on supported models before you arrange service. A failed diagnostic is not the only reason to seek help; physical damage, liquid exposure, an intermittent modem, or a problem affecting every known-good line can also justify inspection.

Use Network Settings reset only as a later step

Apple recommends resetting network settings only after other solutions fail. This is not a guaranteed fix for a carrier-update problem, and it is more disruptive than Airplane Mode or a restart.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Back up anything you need and make sure you know the passwords for frequently used Wi‑Fi networks.
  2. Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
  3. Authenticate if prompted and confirm the reset.
  4. After the iPhone restarts, reconnect to Wi‑Fi and test cellular data, calls, and messages again.

The reset removes saved Wi‑Fi networks and passwords, cellular settings, and VPN and APN settings. Managed settings may require an administrator to restore them. It does not erase your photos, apps, or other personal content, but you will need to re-enter network credentials and may need carrier guidance for any APN or managed configuration.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming timing proves causation: A carrier notice can appear before an unrelated outage, account block, SIM failure, or coverage change.
  • Resetting everything first: Network resets erase saved configuration and make diagnosis harder. Start with the reversible checks.
  • Deleting an eSIM: This can require a complete reactivation process.
  • Using unofficial APN instructions: Wrong values can stop data or create charges.
  • Testing only one message: iMessage, RCS, MMS, and SMS do not all use the same connection.
  • Changing 5G or voice settings blindly: Controls and supported features differ by model, carrier, and region.
  • Buying hardware as a fix: An ejector tool may help remove a physical SIM, but a damaged or incompatible SIM needs carrier replacement.

A compact decision tree

  1. Does the phone show SOS, No Service, or Searching? Use Airplane Mode for at least 15 seconds, restart, install iOS and carrier updates, and check coverage. If it persists, contact the carrier with your device and line details.
  2. Is only data failing? Check Cellular Data, the selected data line, per-app permissions, roaming, and carrier data provisioning. Do not edit APN values without carrier instructions.
  3. Are only calls failing? Check the active line and updates, then have the carrier verify account setup, outage status, billing blocks, and call-system errors.
  4. Are only messages failing? Identify SMS versus iMessage, RCS, or MMS, verify the connection each requires, and ask the carrier about support and provisioning.
  5. Is one SIM or eSIM line missing? Reseat a physical SIM carefully; for a damaged card, absent eSIM, or activation problem, contact the carrier. Do not delete the eSIM.
  6. Did all carrier checks pass? Consider Apple diagnostics or service, especially when the problem follows the iPhone across known-good service.

What the update does—and does not—explain

A carrier-settings update can change how the iPhone communicates with a provider and can enable features, so checking for an available update is sensible. The separate “Cellular Settings Updated” modem notice is informational and does not change your plan or carrier settings. Neither message is proof that the carrier caused a subsequent failure. The reliable approach is to classify the symptom, verify the relevant iPhone controls, and have the carrier check the account and network before taking a disruptive reset.
