Windows 8 error 0x80070057 means “The parameter is incorrect,” but the code does not identify one universal fault. The correct fix depends on where it appears: Windows Update, Windows Setup, a feature installation, a network-share permission view, or an application such as SQL Server. Start by identifying that operation, then restart Windows, run the relevant troubleshooter, repair protected files with SFC and DISM, check storage, and reset the Windows Update cache only when Windows Update is the failing component. The Windows 8-specific SMB and SQL/MSXML cases require separate handling; an unrelated hotfix can make the problem worse.

What error 0x80070057 means

Microsoft labels 0x80070057 as “The parameter is incorrect.” In practical terms, a Windows component received a value, path, setting, or data structure it could not accept. That description is intentionally broad. The same hexadecimal code is documented in separate Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 scenarios involving update or setup, effective-access displays for SMB shares, and SQL Server communication through MSXML.

Consequently, there is no single download or command that is appropriate for every appearance of the code. A repair that helps Windows Update will not necessarily correct an SMB permissions display, and an MSXML hotfix intended for SQL Server should not be installed merely because the number matches. Treat the location and timing of the message as the primary diagnostic information.

Identify the operation that failed

Where the message appears Typical trigger to investigate Use this article path
Windows Update or an update restart Damaged update cache, corrupted protected files, component-store problems, insufficient space, or software interference Run the update troubleshooter, repair with SFC and DISM, check storage, then reset the update cache
Windows Setup or an upgrade/install screen Setup media or parameters, disk problems, low free space, peripherals, or security software blocking setup Disconnect extras, verify space and media, repair Windows, and retry setup
Optional feature or Windows component installation Component-store corruption or an unavailable repair source Use DISM online; provide matching installation media if the online source cannot repair the image
Effective Access on a network share Windows 8/8.1 effective-access display against a non-Microsoft SMB 3.0 share accessed by UNC path Use the documented drive-letter workaround and check the Windows edition before considering an update
SQL Server or another application using MSXML The Windows 8/Server 2012 MSXML web-request scenario Use only the MSXML 3.0 or 6.0 fix that matches that application scenario

Write down the exact screen, application name, and action that preceded the code. If the message appears during more than one operation, repair Windows Update and system files first, then test the application-specific path separately.

Before changing Windows

  • Back up documents and any files created by the application that is failing. A repair command normally preserves personal files, but a setup retry or disk repair can require a restart.
  • Sign in with an administrator account. SFC, DISM, service changes, and some setup actions require elevation.
  • Close installers, browsers, office applications, and anything else that has unsaved work.
  • Note whether the computer is running Windows 8 or Windows 8.1. Microsoft’s documented SMB update applies to Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2, not the original Windows 8 release.
  • Keep the Windows installation disc or an ISO that matches the installed edition and language available. DISM may need it as a repair source.

Core repair sequence for Windows Update and setup

1. Restart and retry once

Choose Restart, not Shut down, and wait for Windows to return to the desktop. Retry the exact update or installation. Microsoft lists a restart as an initial response to failed installations and updates because pending servicing actions and locked files can clear during boot. If the same code returns, continue rather than repeatedly clicking Retry.

2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter when an update failed

Use this branch only if Windows Update is the failing operation. In Windows 8, open Control Panel, choose Troubleshooting, select Fix problems with Windows Update under System and Security, and allow the wizard to apply its recommended repairs. Restart if it requests one, then try the update again.

The troubleshooter is not a substitute for SFC or DISM. It addresses update-detection and service conditions; protected-file or component-store corruption can remain after it finishes.

3. Check free space and the disk

Setup and servicing need working space for downloaded packages, temporary files, and rollback data. Open the Start screen, type cleanmgr, and run Disk Cleanup for the system drive. Remove only categories you understand, empty the Recycle Bin if appropriate, and keep enough free space for the update or upgrade rather than trying to run at the last few megabytes.

To perform a read-only file-system check, open an elevated Command Prompt and run:

chkdsk C: /scan

Replace C: if Windows is installed on another volume. If Windows reports errors that require a lock on the volume, save your work and run the command it recommends, commonly:

chkdsk C: /f

/f can schedule a check for the next restart. Allow it to complete; interrupting a disk repair can create additional problems.

4. Disconnect unnecessary hardware and remove interference temporarily

For setup failures, unplug external drives, card readers, printers, USB hubs, and other peripherals that are not required to install Windows. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, and network connection needed for the operation. Retry after the removal.

Microsoft also lists temporarily uninstalling or disabling antivirus or antispyware when setup is being blocked. Do this only long enough to test, disconnect from untrusted networks if practical, and turn protection back on immediately after the test. Security software can interfere with setup, but disabling it does not repair corrupted Windows files and should not be treated as a permanent solution.

5. Repair protected system files with System File Checker

Open an elevated Command Prompt: press Windows key, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and choose Run as administrator. At the prompt, run:

sfc /scannow

Keep the window open until verification reaches 100 percent. SFC checks protected Windows files and replaces missing or corrupted copies when a valid local source is available. Restart after it completes, then retry the failed operation.

The result message determines the next move:

  • “Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations” means SFC did not detect protected-file corruption; continue with DISM or the branch-specific instructions.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them” means the repair completed; restart before testing.
  • “Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them” means the component store or repair source may also be damaged. Run DISM, then run SFC again.

6. Repair the component store with DISM

In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

DISM services the currently running Windows image. It can obtain repair files through Windows servicing when that source is working. The process may appear to pause at a percentage for several minutes; do not close the window solely because progress is slow. Restart when it finishes, then run sfc /scannow again and test the update or setup operation.

7. Give DISM a matching installation source when the online source is broken

If DISM reports that source files could not be found, mount a Windows 8 installation DVD or ISO that matches the installed edition, architecture, language, and servicing level as closely as possible. Assume the mounted media is drive D: only if that is what File Explorer shows; substitute the actual letter.

First inspect the image indexes:

DISM /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:D:sourcesinstall.wim

Identify the index corresponding to your installed edition, then run RestoreHealth with that index:

DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:wim:D:sourcesinstall.wim:INDEX /LimitAccess

Replace INDEX with the number shown by /Get-WimInfo. If the media contains install.esd instead of install.wim, use the source format supported by that media rather than guessing. A mismatched edition or architecture can cause another “source files could not be found” result. After DISM succeeds, run SFC again, restart, and retry.

8. Reset the Windows Update cache only for Windows Update failures

Do not use this step for an SMB effective-access message or an application error. For Windows Update, open an elevated Command Prompt and stop the update service:

net stop wuauserv

Open C:Windows in File Explorer and rename SoftwareDistribution to SoftwareDistribution.old. Renaming preserves the old folder if you need to inspect it and lets Windows create a fresh cache. If Windows says files are in use, confirm that the Windows Update service stopped and close any update-related window before trying again.

Return to the elevated Command Prompt and start the service:

net start wuauserv

Restart the computer. Windows Update will rebuild its working folders and redownload required packages. The first scan can take longer because the previous cache is no longer available. If the code returns immediately, record the update number and move to the setup, storage, or system-repair branches instead of repeatedly deleting the folder.

Branch-specific fixes

When Windows Setup or an upgrade displays 0x80070057

Use the core sequence through storage, peripherals, SFC, and DISM. Verify that the installation media is readable and matches the edition and architecture you intend to install. If the message appears only after connecting an external drive or printer, retry with that hardware disconnected. If setup still fails, note the exact stage—copying files, applying features, or the first restart—because each stage points to a different input or disk condition. Do not apply an SMB or MSXML hotfix to a generic setup failure.

When an optional feature will not install

Run DISM against the online image first. If Windows cannot obtain source files, supply matching installation media as described above. Keep the media mounted until DISM completes, then restart and retry the feature from Control Panel. Resetting SoftwareDistribution is relevant only if the feature installation is being delivered through Windows Update and the update service itself is failing.

When the error appears while viewing effective access on an SMB share

Microsoft documents a Windows 8/8.1 issue when effective access is viewed for a non-Microsoft SMB 3.0 share through a UNC path such as \servershare. The documented workaround is to map the share to a drive letter and view permissions through that mapped drive instead of the UNC path.

Check the operating system before looking for an update. Microsoft’s documented update applies to Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2; it does not apply to the original Windows 8 release. Do not install that update on Windows 8 merely because the error code is identical. If mapping a drive letter resolves the display, the problem was the effective-access view rather than a general Windows file-integrity failure.

When SQL Server reports the code during an MSXML web request

A separate Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012 case occurs when SQL Server uses MSXML to communicate with a web server. Microsoft released fixes for MSXML 3.0 and MSXML 6.0 for that specific scenario. Confirm which MSXML version the application uses and whether the failure occurs during that web request before applying anything. An MSXML fix is not a general Windows 8 installation repair and should not be used for Windows Update, setup, or SMB errors.

Choose the repair path by trigger, source, risk, and version

Triggering component Primary repair source Relative disruption Version or edition check
Windows Update Windows Update troubleshooter, online DISM source, then a matching installation source Restart and cache rebuild are usually reversible; packages must be downloaded again Use steps appropriate to the installed Windows 8 edition
Windows Setup Readable, matching installation media plus the local Windows image Peripherals may be disconnected and setup may require several restarts Match architecture, language, edition, and installation media
SMB effective-access display Mapped drive letter; an update only for the documented 8.1/Server 2012 R2 case Changing the path is low risk; an unrelated hotfix is inappropriate Original Windows 8 is outside that documented update
SQL/MSXML web request Application-specific MSXML 3.0 or 6.0 fix Limit changes to the affected application and test its request afterward Match Windows Server/Windows edition and the MSXML version in use

What to do when a step does not work

SFC completes but the code remains

SFC repairs protected files, not every update-cache, setup-media, disk, or application condition. Run DISM, restart, and follow the branch that matches the failing operation. If the error is in SMB or SQL/MSXML, stop repeating SFC and use the relevant application-specific path.

DISM cannot find source files

Check the drive letter, confirm that the media contains the image file, and verify the image index. The source must correspond to the installed edition and architecture; a generic or mismatched image may not contain the required component. Use the online command without /LimitAccess only when Windows Update itself can provide the source; otherwise provide matching media.

Resetting the cache changes nothing

A cache reset affects Windows Update’s downloaded metadata and packages. It cannot repair a failing hard drive, an incompatible setup image, an SMB effective-access display, or an MSXML application request. Return to the operation-identification table and test the appropriate branch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The error returns after a restart

Record the exact update or setup stage, the edition (Windows 8 or 8.1), available disk space, and the final SFC or DISM result. Those details distinguish a servicing problem from a version-specific issue and are the information a support technician needs. Avoid installing random hotfixes that merely mention 0x80070057.

Bottom line

Fixing 0x80070057 in Windows 8 starts with identifying where it occurs, not with downloading a universal patch. Restart, run the Windows Update troubleshooter when appropriate, check space and disk health, repair the image with SFC and DISM, and reset SoftwareDistribution only for an update failure. Use the mapped-drive workaround for the documented SMB display issue and an MSXML-specific fix only for the SQL Server web-request case, while checking whether the computer is Windows 8 or Windows 8.1.
