How to Fix Input Lag That Makes Parrying Difficult

If your parry consistently appears after the attack connects, first determine whether the delay is local and repeatable or intermittent and network-related. Use the same training situation, change one setting at a time, and check the entire path from button press to displayed frame: controller, game, platform, frame presentation, and display. Start with free, reversible settings before buying hardware.

What input lag means for a parry

A parry is judged inside a narrow game-defined window, so a small delay anywhere between pressing a button and seeing the resulting frame can make a correct reaction look late. Input latency is not one single number. Microsoft’s technical explanations separate the physical button press, the moment the game reads that input, and the time the result appears on screen. The controller connection, game and console or PC processing, frame presentation, and display processing can all contribute.

That distinction matters because a television setting cannot repair a game that is missing frames, and a new controller cannot correct a display that is adding processing delay. Diagnose the layer before spending money.

Constant delay versus intermittent delay

A constant delay feels like every action is slightly behind your hand. It can point to timing expectations, a local input or display path, or a game-specific input window. Intermittent delay looks different: occasional freezes, uneven animation, or opponent actions arriving late can involve frame-time spikes, background load, or online conditions. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis of any particular game.

If only parries fail while movement, attacks, and menus feel immediate, check the game’s own timing rules and practice mode. Some titles require an early input, use a different button phase, or vary the parry window by attack. For exact frame windows, use the game’s official support or frame-data documentation rather than assuming every late parry is hardware lag.

Build a repeatable baseline before changing settings

Diagnosis is only useful when the test is repeatable. A training mode, fixed practice opponent, recorded attack, or another predictable cue is ideal. If the game has none, choose one attack you can reproduce consistently.

  1. Use the same character, opponent, arena, camera distance, and difficulty for each test.
  2. Choose one attack cue and attempt the parry repeatedly. Do not mix several attacks while evaluating a setting.
  3. Record whether the result is always late, sometimes late, or apparently on time. A phone video of your hands and the screen can help you compare attempts, although it is not a precision latency measurement.
  4. Change one variable, restart the game when required, and repeat the same attempts. If you alter refresh rate, display mode, controller connection, and graphics mode together, you will not know which change mattered.
  5. Test offline or in a local practice mode first. Then compare an online match under similar conditions. A local delay that remains identical offline is a different problem from an online-only delay.

Ask two questions after every run: does the whole game feel delayed, and is the delay steady? The answers determine whether to inspect display and frame presentation first or investigate performance and network behavior.

Check the display path first

Enable the display’s low-latency mode

Televisions and monitors commonly provide a Game, Low Latency, or similar processing mode. Open the display’s own settings while the correct input is selected and confirm that the mode is active. Automatic low-latency features may depend on the console, HDMI signal, or picture preset; verify their status rather than assuming the display detected the game correctly.

Menu names and locations differ by model. Use the exact television or monitor manual for the path instead of applying a menu sequence from another device. Official Sony guidance notes that low-latency features can reduce processing but cannot eliminate all input lag, so treat this as a first check, not a guarantee.

Confirm the Windows refresh rate and VRR capability

On Windows 10 or 11, open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. Select the screen used for the game, then inspect the current refresh rate and whether the display reports variable refresh rate (VRR) support.

Choose a higher rate only when Windows lists it for the selected resolution and it is compatible with your cable, port, and display. Microsoft defines 60 Hz as 60 screen updates per second. A higher supported rate can make motion and input presentation feel more responsive, but it does not automatically reduce every component of latency. The rates available in this panel depend on the display and resolution.

Display check What it changes What it cannot prove
Game or low-latency mode Reduces or bypasses some picture-processing steps inside the display. It does not prove the game is delivering frames on time.
Higher supported refresh rate Allows the screen to update more often when the game supplies frames. It does not guarantee better parry success or make an unsupported rate available.
VRR support shown in Windows Allows refresh timing to follow changing frame output on compatible hardware. It does not mean every game, cable, or graphics mode will use VRR.

Compare the game’s performance modes

Many console and PC games offer a performance, frame-rate, quality, or resolution mode. If yours does, compare the modes in the same repeatable test. A performance mode may target a higher or steadier frame rate, while a quality mode may use a higher resolution or visual effects. The right choice depends on the title and hardware; do not assume every game offers a switch or that the higher advertised frame rate is maintained in every scene.

Watch for uneven frame pacing. A game that reports a high average frame rate can still feel late when individual frames take much longer than the surrounding frames. If the parry cue is accompanied by a hitch, stutter, or animation jump, investigate performance rather than only display settings. Close unnecessary background applications on a PC, use the game’s own frame-rate limit where available, and retest from the same save or training state.

Windows 11: optimize compatible windowed games

Windows 11 includes a setting for compatible DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 games running in windowed or borderless-window mode:

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
  2. Turn on Optimizations for windowed games.
  3. Close and restart the game before testing again.

Microsoft says this feature moves compatible games to a newer presentation model that can reduce frame latency and can enable features such as VRR on supported displays. It is not a universal fix: it applies to the specified DirectX versions and windowed or borderless modes, not every game, API, or operating system. If the game is exclusive full-screen or uses another graphics API, the switch may have no effect.

Choose a sensible synchronization strategy

Reducing latency can expose a separate problem: tearing. Tearing occurs when the display scans out part of one frame and part of another, often when frame output exceeds the display’s refresh rate or is not synchronized.

Microsoft’s DirectX guidance identifies three relevant approaches for supported configurations:

  • Match the game’s frame-rate limit to the display refresh rate.
  • Use the game’s own V-Sync option.
  • Use VRR when the display, platform, and game support it.

Each approach has trade-offs. V-Sync can prevent tearing but may add waiting when a frame misses the presentation deadline. VRR can smooth changing frame times inside its operating range, while output outside that range may behave differently. A frame-rate cap can improve pacing but may reduce peak frame rate. There is no single setting that is optimal for every engine and display, so test one strategy at a time with the same parry cue.

PS5 requirements and limits

On PS5, Sony describes VRR as synchronizing the display refresh rate with the console’s graphical output on a compatible HDMI 2.1 VRR television or monitor. In supported games, that can reduce frame-pacing artifacts and may reduce perceived input lag. Sony also states that results vary with the television, game, and selected visual mode.

Open the PS5 Settings > Screen and Video area to review VRR options. On a compatible setup, supported games can enable it automatically; the same area lets you turn it off for comparison. Sony’s announcement was published in 2022, so current console firmware, game support, display compatibility lists, and visual-mode behavior should be checked for the title you play.

Windows and other platforms

On Windows, VRR may be exposed through the display driver, Windows graphics settings, or the monitor’s own controls. The Advanced display page confirms whether Windows detects support, but detection alone does not guarantee that a particular game is using it. Confirm the game’s rendering mode, driver configuration, and display input before drawing conclusions.

Controller and console considerations

Do not treat Xbox Dynamic Latency Input as a user toggle

Microsoft’s Dynamic Latency Input (DLI) documentation describes an Xbox-console synchronization system that coordinates input timing with the game. It requires a compatible device and firmware and depends on a consistent input cadence. The developer documentation also states that DLI is unavailable on PC.

The documented maximum cadence is 125 Hz; attempting a higher cadence disables DLI. That is an implementation constraint for supported Xbox hardware, not a recommended player setting. DLI documentation covers APIs and developer behavior rather than a universal menu option. You should not expect a console setting, a particular controller purchase, or an undocumented polling-rate change to fix every late parry.

Check simple connection variables without overclaiming

For diagnosis, use the controller connection that the platform and game officially support, update platform and controller firmware through their normal settings, and compare wireless and wired operation only if both are available on your device. Keep the controller charged and remove obvious interference sources. These checks can identify a faulty or unstable connection, but they do not establish that a wired controller is inherently faster in every setup.

If inputs drop, repeat, or arrive in bursts rather than feeling uniformly late, look for connection or hardware symptoms. If every input is consistently behind while the controller behaves normally in menus, return to the frame and display path.

Separate local latency from online delay

Perform the baseline test in an offline or local mode whenever possible. If the same parry is late there, internet latency is not required to explain the result. Inspect local frame pacing, display mode, refresh rate, and game timing rules.

If offline practice feels immediate but online opponents or attack cues become inconsistent, the network path may be contributing. Ping, jitter, packet loss, rollback behavior, and the game’s netcode can change when an opponent’s action is displayed or corrected. A television setting cannot remove those effects. Use the game’s network diagnostics, select a suitable region when the game permits it, and consult the title’s support documentation for its rollback or delay-based netcode behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not infer a network problem from one missed parry. Compare several attempts under similar conditions and note whether your own character’s local actions also feel delayed or only remote actions change.

A decision table for the next step

Observed symptom Most useful next check Reason
Every action feels equally behind offline. Display game mode, Windows refresh rate, console visual mode, and frame pacing. A path-wide local delay is more plausible than an online-only effect.
Only parries fail, while movement and menus feel normal. Verify the game’s parry window, input direction, and training timing. The mechanic may have title-specific rules or a narrow window.
Delay appears with stutters or freezes. Compare performance modes and inspect frame-time behavior. Uneven frame delivery can make a reaction appear late.
Offline is consistent; online is erratic. Use the game’s network diagnostics and support guidance. Remote-action timing and rollback can vary independently of the display.
Changing display mode has no effect, but the signal is limited to 60 Hz. Check platform output, resolution, ports, cable, and display capabilities. The hardware may not offer a suitable higher-refresh mode.

When a hardware upgrade is justified

Consider a high-refresh-rate gaming monitor only after the reversible checks identify a display limitation. A monitor with a low-latency game mode can be reasonable when your current screen cannot provide a supported higher refresh rate, lacks an appropriate gaming mode, or adds visibly heavy processing.

Before buying, verify all of the following for your platform and game:

  • Supported resolution-and-refresh combinations at the port you will use.
  • HDMI or DisplayPort requirements, including the cable and console or GPU output.
  • VRR compatibility with the platform, game, and desired visual mode.
  • Whether the display’s low-latency mode disables useful picture controls or changes HDR behavior.
  • Independent measured input latency for the exact refresh rate and resolution, not just a manufacturer response-time claim.

A higher-refresh display can improve responsiveness when the system can actually feed it frames, but no evidence supports promising that a monitor will make every parry reliable. A purchase is costly and less reversible than changing a setting, so it belongs after diagnosis.

Common mistakes that waste time

  • Changing everything at once: You lose the ability to identify the effective change. Keep a short log and alter one variable per test.
  • Assuming 120 Hz is always available: Windows lists rates based on the display and resolution. Consoles also depend on the game and output mode.
  • Disabling V-Sync automatically: This may reduce waiting in some configurations but can introduce tearing. Compare synchronization strategies instead.
  • Blaming the controller first: A late displayed frame can make a perfectly registered button press look wrong.
  • Using a PC-only fix on a console: Windows 11’s windowed-game optimization does not apply to console games.
  • Treating VRR as universal: It requires compatible hardware and game support, and the result varies by visual mode.
  • Using a single online match as proof: Network conditions fluctuate. Establish an offline baseline before judging local hardware.
  • Expecting software utilities to repair display latency: A utility cannot bypass processing inside a television or change a game’s input window without documented support.

A compact troubleshooting checklist

  1. Reproduce the same attack and parry in a repeatable offline or training situation.
  2. Classify the delay as constant, intermittent, or online-only.
  3. Enable the display’s documented Game or low-latency mode.
  4. On Windows, verify the selected screen, refresh rate, and VRR status at Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
  5. Compare the game’s performance and quality modes without changing other variables.
  6. On Windows 11, test Optimizations for windowed games for compatible DirectX 10/11 windowed or borderless games, then restart the game.
  7. Test a synchronization approach—frame-rate cap, in-game V-Sync, or supported VRR—while watching for tearing and pacing changes.
  8. On PS5, review VRR under Settings > Screen and Video and confirm current game and display compatibility.
  9. Check controller firmware and supported connection behavior, but do not assume a wired controller or undocumented polling setting is a cure.
  10. Only after these checks, evaluate whether the display lacks the refresh rate or low-latency capability your platform can use.

What the evidence can—and cannot—tell you

Microsoft’s current Windows guidance supports checking refresh rate and VRR availability and notes that higher refresh can improve gaming responsiveness. Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance supports the windowed-game optimization steps above. Sony’s PS5 VRR explanation establishes the HDMI 2.1 compatibility requirement and warns that results vary by TV, game, and visual mode. Microsoft’s GameInput documentation explains Xbox DLI’s device, firmware, cadence, and platform limits; it is developer-facing rather than a universal user setting. Xbox’s end-to-end latency material explains why the controller, game, frame presentation, and display must be considered together, but it is not a diagnostic test of your specific title.

None of those sources measures the parry window of a particular game, your controller, your monitor, or your network route. Use the sequence above to isolate the layer you can change, then use the game’s own support information for title-specific timing and online behavior.
