How to Fix Input Lag and Unresponsive Melee Attacks in PC Games

Fix input lag by isolating where the delay enters the path from your keyboard, mouse, or controller to the game, renderer, and display. First determine whether every action is late, only one game is affected, or one melee move is being rejected by the game’s own rules. Then check bindings and input hardware, verify Windows’ refresh-rate and windowed-game settings, and test the latency feature supported by your GPU. Change one setting at a time and retest the same scene.

A melee attack that fails to appear is not automatically “input lag.” It can be a missing binding, a required tap or hold, stamina or cooldown logic, animation recovery, range validation, buffered-input behavior, stutter, or an online timing issue. Treat those as separate branches instead of buying hardware or disabling every synchronization option.

Start by separating delay, a missed input, and a rejected attack

Input latency is the time between a physical input and the resulting output. It can accumulate as the device reports an event, the game processes it, the CPU and GPU prepare a frame, and the display presents that frame. A symptom that looks identical to the player can therefore have several causes.

What you observe What it suggests First place to investigate
Menus, movement, camera control, and attacks all feel late in several games A broader input, rendering, or display path issue Compare another input device, check the display refresh rate, and inspect frame delivery
Only one game feels delayed A game setting, API or display-mode interaction, or game-specific performance issue That game’s controls, graphics settings, and supported latency options
Only one melee move fails while other actions respond promptly Combat rules or a binding problem are more likely than system-wide latency Official controls and the move’s timing, resource, range, and input requirements
The attack starts late along with visible stutter or delayed audio Frame delivery or a temporary performance stall may be contributing Repeat the test in the same scene while watching for stutter
The game is responsive offline but not during an online match The test needs to distinguish local input from online timing Repeat offline or in a training mode before changing PC latency settings

This is a diagnosis strategy, not a universal claim about any particular game. Record the game, character or weapon, input method, wired or wireless connection, display mode, and whether the symptom occurs offline. A short note prevents you from comparing different scenes or mechanics and mistaking normal variation for an improvement.

Run a controlled first-pass checklist

  1. Reproduce the same action. Use one repeatable melee move, the same distance from the target, and the same game mode. Note whether the press is ignored, appears late, or appears on time but produces no hit.
  2. Test another action. Try movement, camera input, a menu selection, and a different attack. If those respond immediately, a universal PC delay is less likely.
  3. Try another input device if one is already available. A spare controller, keyboard, or mouse is useful as a comparison. This does not prove that a new device will cure rendering latency or game buffering; it only helps locate a fault in the input path.
  4. Repeat offline when the game allows it. An offline or training mode removes some online variables from the comparison. Do not infer that every online complaint is a network problem from this test alone.
  5. Watch for stutter. A delayed-looking attack accompanied by an animation hitch, frozen audio, or uneven frame pacing should be investigated as a frame-delivery problem rather than treated as a button-binding failure.
  6. Write down the result before changing anything. A setting that feels better after several simultaneous changes cannot be identified reliably, and you may leave a harmful change enabled.

Check the input path before changing graphics settings

Confirm the in-game binding

Open the game’s controls or key-bindings screen and verify the exact action assigned to the attack. Look for duplicate assignments, a profile that loaded for a different device, a modifier key that is no longer recognized, or a control scheme that distinguishes tap, hold, and press-and-release. Restore the default binding only if you have recorded your custom layout; otherwise, you can create a second problem while testing the first.

Check whether the game shows an input prompt when the button is pressed. A prompt that never changes points toward the device, connection, or binding. A prompt that appears while the attack does not points toward combat logic, resource checks, animation state, range, or a game-specific bug.

Compare connection paths

Where practical, test a different USB port or the device’s alternate connection mode, then repeat the same action. The purpose is to identify an intermittent connection or device profile, not to assume that every port change reduces latency. Wireless and wired comparisons should use the same game scene and input device whenever possible.

Microsoft’s game-development documentation describes input events being processed by the game and uses a gaming mouse as an example of a high-precision device that can generate frequent events. That supports checking whether events reach the game, but it does not establish that buying a higher-specification mouse will fix a missed melee attack.

Check for accidental input filtering

Look for the game’s own debounce, hold-to-activate, accessibility, or controller-layout options. If the attack requires a short tap, holding the button may invoke a different action or nothing at all. If the game supports input buffering, its permitted buffer window is game-specific; do not assume that pressing earlier will always queue the move.

Determine whether the melee move is being rejected by game rules

If movement and other attacks respond promptly, inspect the game’s official controls and combat instructions before touching driver settings. Common rule categories include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Animation recovery: the character is still committed to a previous attack, dodge, block, or hit reaction.
  • Cooldown or resource checks: stamina, ammunition, mana, a weapon charge, or a cooldown prevents the action.
  • Range and target validation: the move requires a target, facing direction, lock-on state, or distance that is not currently satisfied.
  • Buffered-input limits: the game accepts a press only during a defined window, or discards inputs made outside it.
  • Tap-versus-hold behavior: a quick press and a held button can invoke different actions.
  • State restrictions: menus, ladders, swimming, cinematics, stagger states, or other context-specific states can suppress attacks.

Use a training area or a low-risk encounter to repeat the move while changing only one condition at a time: stand within clear range, wait for the prior animation to finish, restore the required resource, and try both a tap and a hold if the controls allow both. If the move still fails while the game recognizes the button and all stated conditions are satisfied, record the game version and exact input sequence for the developer’s support channel. There is no universal attack timing that applies across games.

Verify the display refresh rate in Windows

A display can show a frame only when it refreshes. A wrong or unexpectedly reduced refresh-rate selection can make controls look less immediate even when the game is processing them normally.

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
  2. Choose the display that you use for the game.
  3. Inspect the selected refresh rate and choose a rate supported by that display and connection.
  4. Launch the same game scene again and compare the result without changing another setting.

Windows’ Dynamic Refresh Rate requires compatible hardware. Microsoft notes that it can limit a game’s maximum refresh rate in some situations. If a favorite game appears capped or feels different after Dynamic Refresh Rate was enabled, disable it temporarily and retest. Re-enable it if the cap was unrelated and you prefer its power-saving behavior.

Test Windows 11 optimizations for windowed and borderless games

For a compatible DirectX 10 or DirectX 11 game running in windowed or borderless mode on Windows 11, Microsoft says Optimizations for windowed games can transition compatible games to flip-model presentation and reduce frame latency.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
  2. Find the game in the app list. Add its executable if it is not listed.
  3. Open the game’s graphics options and test Optimizations for windowed games.
  4. Restart the game after changing the setting; the change is not a valid comparison until the restart has occurred.
  5. Repeat the same attack and scene, then revert the option if it does not help or causes a compatibility problem.

This setting does not apply to every API, display mode, or Windows edition. A full-screen game, a DirectX version outside the documented scope, or a title with its own presentation path may not respond to it.

Use the latency feature that matches your GPU

NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency

NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency is available only in supported games. When a supported title exposes the option, enable it in that game’s settings and retest the same scene. NVIDIA describes Reflex as synchronizing CPU and GPU rendering so the render queue does not get unnecessarily far ahead.

Reflex and the driver’s Ultra Low Latency setting are not additive switches. NVIDIA says Reflex overrides the driver Ultra Low Latency setting when both are enabled. Therefore, do not present both as two independent latency reductions or judge them by enabling both at once. If the game has no Reflex option, its absence does not prove that the driver setting will solve the issue; support and behavior vary by game.

AMD Radeon Anti-Lag

Radeon Anti-Lag is intended to reduce the interval between control sampling and visual output. AMD says it is most useful when the GPU is the limiting part of the workload. Test it only when your GPU, driver, and game support the feature, and check the current driver documentation because availability changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AMD’s cited support article states that Radeon Chill and Anti-Lag cannot operate at the same time in the documented software version. If both options are present, choose the one you are testing instead of assuming that enabling both compounds the effect. Record the driver version and restore the previous state if the game becomes unstable or the symptom does not change.

Understand V-Sync, fullscreen, and variable-refresh trade-offs

V-Sync and the choice between fullscreen, borderless, and windowed presentation can affect when a completed frame reaches the display. The best combination depends on whether you tolerate tearing, whether the display uses variable refresh, what the game supports, and how current Windows handles that presentation mode.

  • V-Sync: compare the game’s supported modes rather than treating “off” as a universal answer. Disabling it may reduce one form of waiting but can introduce visible tearing.
  • Fullscreen versus borderless: test the modes the game actually supports. Borderless mode is the relevant context for Windows 11’s windowed-game optimization, while a title’s fullscreen implementation may behave differently.
  • Variable refresh: keep the display and GPU configuration consistent during a comparison. Changing several synchronization controls together makes the result impossible to attribute.

NVIDIA’s general latency guidance discusses V-Sync and fullscreen as variables, but it does not justify a single setting for every game, monitor, or tolerance for tearing. Use the same scene, change one control, and keep the mode that offers the best balance of responsiveness, image stability, and compatibility for your setup.

Use a measured retest instead of relying on memory

Human perception is sensitive to context: a quiet training room can feel different from a crowded fight, and a successful attack can make a setting seem better. A simple repeatable method is more useful than a dramatic one-time impression.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Close background applications that visibly cause stutter, but do not change several game settings at once.
  2. Choose one scene, one character state, and one melee input.
  3. Perform the action repeatedly under the same conditions and note missed presses, visible delay, stutter, and whether the game displays the input prompt.
  4. Change exactly one setting or connection.
  5. Restart the game when Windows or the feature documentation requests it.
  6. Repeat the same number of attempts in the same scene.
  7. Keep the change only if it improves the symptom without introducing tearing, instability, a frame-rate cap, or a new compatibility problem.

Microsoft Learn uses 60 frames per second and 16.7 milliseconds as an illustrative 60 Hz game-loop example. Its explanation shows how blocking presentation can add up to one frame interval in that example; those figures are not a measured result for every PC game, display, or setting.

Choose the next branch from the test result

Retest result Next action
Another input device works in the same game and scene Inspect the original device, its connection, profile, and button behavior before replacing it.
Every device fails only for one melee move Check the move’s binding, tap or hold requirement, resource, range, cooldown, recovery, and buffer rules.
Several games and devices feel late Verify refresh rate, display mode, visible stutter, and the GPU-supported latency feature; test the display path before buying peripherals.
Only borderless or windowed mode is affected on Windows 11 Test Optimizations for windowed games for a compatible DirectX 10/11 title and restart it.
Anti-Lag or Reflex changes nothing Confirm that the game supports the feature and that the workload matches its intended conditions; revert it before testing another variable.
The issue appears only online Repeat offline or in training mode, document the exact difference, and avoid labeling a local PC setting as the fix without that comparison.

When replacing hardware is justified

Consider a replacement only after comparison testing shows that the existing keyboard, mouse, or controller consistently misses or delays events while another device works in the same port, game, and scene. A new device cannot repair an attack that is blocked by stamina, animation recovery, range, buffering, or cooldown rules, and it cannot by itself remove render-queue or display-presentation latency.

If no available device changes the symptom and multiple games show the same delay, continue with the display and frame-delivery checks. If only one game or move remains affected, preserve the reproducible steps, exact game version, input method, and offline/online result for the game’s support team. Those details are more actionable than a general report that attacks “feel slow.”

A compact decision path

  1. Is every action delayed in more than one game? If yes, inspect the shared input, render, and display path. If no, continue.
  2. Does another device change the result? If yes, investigate the original device or connection. If no, continue.
  3. Does the game recognize the attack input? If no, check binding and connection. If yes, continue.
  4. Is only one move affected? If yes, check combat rules and input requirements. If no, continue.
  5. Is there visible stutter or an unexpected refresh cap? If yes, verify Advanced display settings, Dynamic Refresh Rate behavior, display mode, and compatible Windows 11 windowed-game optimization.
  6. Does the GPU-supported feature apply? Test Reflex in a supported game or Anti-Lag under its documented conditions, one at a time.

The reliable fix is the one that matches the layer where the symptom occurs. Keep a change only after the same action improves under the same conditions, and leave unrelated settings alone.
