When an indie game will not start or repeatedly crashes, use a staged diagnosis: begin with reversible checks, match the symptom to the narrowest likely cause, and change one setting at a time. The correct fix depends on the game, launcher, operating system, hardware and exact error.
“My game isn’t launching. How can I resolve this?”
There is no universal launch fix. Steam notes that games can fail for many reasons and that diagnosis is difficult because players use very different hardware and software combinations. A game that closes before showing a window needs a different investigation from one that reaches the menu and crashes during play.

This procedure is written primarily for Steam games on Windows because the detailed checks and interface labels apply there. Steam also publishes general guidance for Linux and macOS, but driver, security and graphics settings differ by operating system. If the game’s own support page gives a specific instruction for your error, follow that instruction before applying a generic workaround.
Start with the safest checks
Restart and isolate the test
- Save your work and restart the computer.
- After Windows loads, start Steam again and launch the game before opening optional utilities.
- Close recording software, performance monitors, chat overlays and other nonessential programs for this test.
- Change only one thing between attempts and record whether the result changes.
A fresh restart clears temporary processes and gives you a clean comparison. Resource-heavy applications and performance overlays can affect stability, according to the troubleshooting guidance from Capcom (updated July 22, 2026), but their presence is not proof that they caused your crash.

Determine whether one game or several are affected
Try another game that normally works on the same computer. If only one title fails, concentrate first on that title’s requirements, local files, launcher components and developer instructions. If several unrelated games fail, preserve that pattern in your support report; it points toward a shared operating-system, driver, hardware or background-software issue rather than proving that every game’s files are corrupt.
Check requirements before changing settings
Compare your PC with the store-page minimums
Open the game’s store page and compare its minimum CPU, memory, graphics hardware and operating-system requirements with your computer. Requirements vary by game. Running below the minimum can result in very low frame rates or no launch at all. Meeting the minimum does not mean every setting will be stable: if the computer meets minimum but not recommended specifications, lowering graphics options may help once the game opens.

Install operating-system and graphics-driver updates
Apply pending updates through the operating system’s own update mechanism. Steam recommends keeping Windows, Linux or macOS current, as applicable, along with the computer’s drivers. For graphics drivers, use the GPU manufacturer’s official distribution channel rather than a third-party “driver updater.” Reboot after installing a graphics driver; Capcom’s guidance specifically calls for a restart because the new driver is not fully in use until then.
Do not install several driver versions or utilities at once. If a newly installed driver introduces a problem, note its version and the date of the change so the game developer or GPU manufacturer can advise on a rollback or other supported remedy.
Verify the Steam installation
Use Steam’s integrity check
- Restart the computer and Steam.
- Open Library and select the game.
- Open the game’s Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
Steam says the check can take several minutes. It compares local files with the installation data and can replace files that are missing or altered. Avoid launching the game or shutting down Steam while the check is running.
Steam also warns that some files may fail verification normally because local configuration files are not necessarily replaced. That message alone is not proof that the installation is still broken. Launch the game after the process completes and judge the result by the original symptom.

When verification is not enough
If the check repeatedly reports changes, note whether the same files are involved. A security product may be quarantining them, or storage errors may be preventing replacements from sticking. Do not delete random files from the installation folder; preserve the state for support and use the game’s official repair or reinstall instructions if verification cannot complete.

Read the error instead of guessing
Launch the executable directly when Steam’s message is vague
If Steam only reports that a game is “currently unavailable” or closes at “Preparing to Launch,” open the game’s installation folder from Steam’s Library management controls and run the game executable once. A direct launch can reveal a more specific Windows error that Steam’s status window hides. Record the exact wording, including any file name or error code, and stop there if the message identifies a component you do not recognize.
Check prerequisite installers
Some games install required components such as DirectX, PhysX or Microsoft C++ components on their first run. Steam notes that a prerequisite installer that was canceled or blocked can prevent startup. If the game offers to install one, allow the official installer to finish and restart if it requests one. Use the game, Steam or Microsoft support instructions for a named component; never download an individual DLL from an unofficial “DLL download” site.
Handle a missing-executable message
Steam identifies antivirus interference, corrupted files and failed downloads as possible causes when an executable is missing. Restart Steam and run the integrity check before taking broader action. If security software has quarantined a file, inspect its event history and follow the vendor’s process for restoring a verified game file or creating a narrowly scoped exception.
Address DirectX without overclaiming
DirectX provides the connection between games and video or audio hardware. A particular game may fail if it needs a component that the computer does not have, but “install the latest DirectX” is not a universal answer.

Older Windows versions and games that require legacy runtime components are a separate case. If the game names a specific runtime, use the official game, platform or Microsoft instructions for that runtime rather than replacing system files manually.
Apply software-conflict checks one at a time
Security software
Capcom’s troubleshooting guide says security software can block a game executable or flag a legitimate file as a false positive. Check the security product’s quarantine and event history first. If the game is confirmed as legitimate and the vendor supports it, add only the game’s required executable or folder to an exception according to that product’s instructions.
A temporary pause can be used only as a brief diagnostic step when the security vendor documents how to do it. Disconnect from unsafe networks if appropriate, launch the game only long enough to test, restore protection immediately, and remove any temporary exception that was not needed. Never leave protection disabled as a permanent “fix.”
Administrator rights and Compatibility Mode
Some games or launchers may behave differently when Steam or the game executable is run with administrator privileges. Test this only when ordinary launch fails and record whether it changes the symptom. Running everything as administrator permanently can create permission and security problems, so do not treat elevation as a default requirement.
Also inspect the executable’s Compatibility settings. If Compatibility Mode is enabled from an earlier experiment, disable it and test again unless the developer specifically requires a particular mode. Compatibility settings intended for another game can prevent a modern title from starting correctly.
Choose the correct GPU on a dual-GPU laptop
A laptop may have an integrated GPU and a discrete GPU. If a game opens to a black screen, reports an unsupported renderer or crashes as 3D graphics initialize, check the operating system’s graphics settings and the GPU manufacturer’s control panel to see which adapter is assigned to the game. Use the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact menu names, because they vary by driver version. Change only the game’s assignment, then test again.

Shader caches and background applications
Shader caches can become stale after a driver or game update. Capcom lists deleting the relevant game or driver shader cache as a possible check when the symptom matches, such as a crash during shader compilation or immediately after a graphics update. Cache locations differ by game and driver; use the developer or GPU manufacturer’s instructions before deleting anything.

Close background applications that consume substantial CPU, memory, disk or GPU resources. Keep a list of what you closed so you can restore the normal setup after testing. If the crash disappears, re-enable programs individually to identify a conflict rather than leaving unrelated software disabled.

If the game launches but keeps crashing
Identify when the crash occurs
Write down whether the crash happens at startup, in a menu, while loading a level, after a fixed amount of play, during a graphics effect or only after changing display settings. Timing narrows the useful checks. For example, a failure immediately after a driver update makes driver state and shader cache more relevant than a one-time launch prerequisite; a crash only under heavy load makes background resource use, power settings, ventilation and graphics settings worth examining.
Check power, ventilation and display conditions
For a laptop, test while connected to its normal power adapter and confirm that vents are not blocked. Excess heat or an aggressive power-saving mode can reduce stability under sustained load, but the game’s developer or computer manufacturer should guide any system-specific thermal or power change.
Display settings can also matter. If the crash follows a resolution, refresh-rate, HDR or full-screen change, return to the last known working display mode through the game’s supported settings or configuration instructions. Do not edit undocumented configuration files unless the developer tells you exactly what to change and how to restore it.

Do not simultaneously update drivers, disable security, change GPU selection, delete caches and alter display modes. A successful launch would not tell you which change helped, and a failed launch would leave you with more variables to undo. Use a written sequence, keep the original setting for each test, and restore a setting immediately when it proves irrelevant.
Know when a generic fix is the wrong tool
Steam’s platform guidance cannot account for every engine, launcher or configuration. A game-specific error should take priority over a general checklist. The same is true for another launcher: Steam’s Installed Files procedure does not apply to a store or launcher with different controls, so use that platform’s official repair or verification function instead.
Capcom’s checklist is useful for identifying categories of conflicts, but it is publisher-specific and should not be presented as proof that every indie game uses the same folders, prerequisites or crash-report location. Follow the developer’s instructions for configuration paths, safe-mode options and supported launch arguments.
Prepare a useful support request
If the game still fails after the low-risk checks, contact the developer or the relevant platform support rather than repeating the same experiments. Steam notes that some cases require deeper developer assistance or a local PC technician because individual hardware and software combinations are difficult to diagnose remotely.

- The game name, edition and launcher.
- Your operating-system version and whether it is fully updated.
- CPU model, installed memory, GPU model and graphics-driver version.
- Security software and any overlay, recording or monitoring tools normally running.
- Exactly when the failure occurs: before a window, at a menu, during loading or after a period of play.
- The complete error text, code or missing-file name, copied rather than paraphrased.
- A numbered list of reproduction steps, including whether the failure occurs every time.
- Changes made immediately before the problem began, such as a game, driver or operating-system update.
- Relevant screenshots or a short video when the visual symptom matters.
- The crash report generated by the game, if one exists.
Attach diagnostics safely
Run dxdiag and save its report when the support team requests system information. Some games create a folder named CrashReport, but that location is not universal; use the developer’s documented path rather than searching for or uploading unrelated personal files. Remove passwords, license keys and private documents from any archive before sending it.
When to stop troubleshooting yourself
Stop and escalate if verification cannot complete, the same executable repeatedly disappears, the computer crashes outside the game, several games fail after a system change, or the error points to hardware, storage or a protected operating-system component. At that point, further random reinstalls or security changes can destroy useful evidence. Provide the exact symptom and the record of tests to the developer, platform support or a qualified local PC technician.
The practical rule is simple: use reversible, symptom-matched checks first; make one change at a time; and let the game-specific error determine what comes next.
