Snapdragon X laptops run Windows 11 on Arm. An app built for ARM64 runs natively; many traditional x86 and x64 Windows programs can run through Microsoft’s Prism emulation layer. A peripheral is different: emulation can translate an application’s processor instructions, but it cannot create an Arm64 kernel driver, filter, service, shell extension, or device firmware component that the hardware does not have.
That distinction explains the common failure pattern in which a program opens normally but printing, scanning, audio input, capture, VPN, virtualization, or another device feature does not work. Fix the problem by identifying the failing layer, updating Windows and the laptop firmware, choosing an ARM64 application where possible, and checking Arm64 driver support for the exact hardware model.

What compatibility means on a Snapdragon X laptop
Snapdragon X systems use the Windows 11 on Arm edition. Software has three relevant compatibility states, and each requires a different fix.

An ARM64 build is compiled for the processor architecture in the laptop. It does not need instruction emulation, so it is normally the best choice for startup time, efficiency, updates and complete feature support. Check the developer’s download page or the Microsoft Store listing for labels such as ARM64, Windows on Arm or native Arm.

x86 and x64 software running under Prism
Prism is Microsoft’s emulation engine for everyday Windows applications that do not yet have a native Windows-on-Arm version. On supported Windows 11 on Arm devices, Prism translates the application’s x86 or x64 instructions so the main program can run. Microsoft documents per-application emulation and compatibility settings for uncommon failures. Some Prism performance features require Snapdragon X-series hardware.
Emulation applies to user-mode program code. It does not turn a driver compiled for Intel or AMD processors into an Arm64 driver. An emulated application can therefore open while one of its hardware-dependent functions remains unavailable.
Driver-dependent software and peripherals
Printers, scanners, audio interfaces, capture devices, VPN clients, virtual printers, anti-cheat components and similar products often install code below the main application. That code can include a kernel driver, file-system or network filter, background service, shell extension or device-specific component. It must be built for Arm64, or be included as a compatible inbox driver in Windows.

Microsoft’s support rule is explicit: “Peripherals and devices only work if the drivers they depend on are built into Windows 11, or if the hardware developer has released Arm64 drivers for the device.” A Prism setting cannot bypass that requirement.

Identify the failing layer before changing anything
The first symptom usually tells you whether to investigate the application or the hardware path.

- The installer refuses to run, the program will not launch, or it closes immediately: investigate the application architecture, its installer, required runtimes and Prism compatibility.
- The program launches, but a device is not listed: investigate USB or network detection, the Windows driver and the exact device model.
- The device is listed, but a feature is absent: suspect a vendor control panel, filter, shell extension, service or plug-in that lacks Arm64 support.
- Basic operation works but advanced modes fail: the inbox driver may provide only a standard function while vendor software supplies the missing features.
- The failure began after an update: record the Windows build, application version and driver version; compatibility is version-sensitive.
Do not begin by repeatedly reinstalling an x86 application if the application already opens. Once the executable is running, the missing layer is usually a driver or companion component.
Run the safe compatibility checks first
- Install Windows updates. Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install available updates and restart when requested. If optional driver updates are offered, review them for the affected device rather than installing unrelated packages blindly.
- Update the laptop’s firmware and platform drivers. Use the support page for the exact Snapdragon X laptop model. Install only packages that list Windows 11 on Arm or ARM64 support, and follow the manufacturer’s restart instructions.
- Record the exact hardware identity. Note the manufacturer, complete model number, revision, connection type (USB, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi or network) and firmware version. Two devices with similar names can use different drivers.
- Disconnect and reconnect the peripheral directly. For a first test, bypass a dock, hub, monitor pass-through port and adapter. A direct connection separates driver problems from power, cable or hub compatibility problems.
- Retest after a clean restart. A background service or driver may not load until Windows has restarted; record whether the symptom changes rather than assuming the restart fixed the root cause.
Choose an ARM64 application when one exists
Search the software publisher’s download page and the Microsoft Store listing for an ARM64 or Windows-on-Arm build. Prefer that build over an x86 or x64 download when the publisher offers both. A native build can include the correct Arm64 helper, service and plug-in packaging, whereas an older installer may silently deploy only Intel-targeted components.

Look beyond the main executable. Check whether the download includes a print monitor, scanner utility, audio control panel, virtual device, shell integration, browser extension, license service or update agent. Each component must support Arm64 if it runs locally on the laptop. A publisher’s statement that the “app” supports Windows on Arm may refer only to the main user interface.
Use the Microsoft Store when it is the supported distribution
Store listings can identify the supported Windows architecture and deliver updates through Windows. This does not guarantee that an optional hardware driver is Arm64, so check the peripheral support separately.
Use Prism for x86 or x64 applications
If no ARM64 build exists and the application is ordinary user-mode software, install the current x86 or x64 release and let Windows use Prism. Many productivity, communications, media and utility programs work this way.

When Prism is the right answer
- The application is a self-contained user-mode program.
- It does not install a kernel driver, network filter, virtual printer, anti-cheat module or hardware-specific service.
- The publisher supports the current Windows release even though it has not published an Arm64 build.
- The application’s core feature works in a trial or test project before you migrate important data.
When Prism cannot solve the problem
- A driver package is required to enumerate or control the device.
- The application depends on an Intel-only shell extension, service or filter.
- A virtual machine, security product or anti-cheat component requires kernel-level code.
- The installer itself is a hardware-vendor package that has no Arm64-aware setup path.
Handle an uncommon emulation failure
Microsoft documents optional per-app emulation and compatibility settings for cases in which a particular x86 or x64 program behaves incorrectly. The exact labels and location can vary with the Windows 11 build. Apply a setting only to the affected program, restart it, and test one change at a time. These options can improve application behavior; they do not supply a missing device driver.
Check drivers separately from the application
Microsoft’s Arm troubleshooting guidance describes the key split: an x86 application may run under emulation while an experience that depends on a driver remains unavailable until that driver is recompiled for Arm64.
Test the built-in Windows driver first
For a printer or scanner, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners and use the add-device workflow while the hardware is connected and powered on. For other hardware, use the relevant Bluetooth, USB, sound or camera settings page. If Windows can add the device and expose the basic function without a vendor installer, the inbox driver may be sufficient.
Test the exact functions you need: print a page, scan at the required resolution, select the audio input and output, start a camera preview or capture a short clip. Device detection alone is not proof that all features work.
Do not assume a manufacturer installer is portable
Microsoft warns that some manufacturer installers, including printer installers, may not work when their software lacks Arm support. An installer can fail before the driver is installed, or it can install the main utility while omitting the Arm64 device component. If Windows’ built-in setup works, keep that configuration instead of adding an unverified package.

Confirm Arm64 support for the exact model
On the hardware developer’s support page, look for an explicit Windows 11 on Arm or ARM64 driver statement. “Works with Windows 11” by itself is not enough: it may describe only x86-64 PCs. Verify the model number, operating-system edition, connection type and driver release date. If the vendor lists only Intel or AMD architectures, treat the device as unsupported on the Snapdragon X laptop unless Windows provides an inbox driver that meets your needs.

Printers and multifunction devices
A document editor can run under Prism while a printer control panel, status monitor or scan module fails. Try Windows’ built-in printer addition first. Basic printing may work with an inbox class driver, while duplex controls, ink monitoring, finishing options or scanning require a separate Arm64 package.
Scanners
Scanner utilities commonly include a device service and a model-specific interface. If the scanner appears in Windows but the vendor utility cannot connect, test the Windows scanning workflow and ask the vendor whether the utility and driver are both Arm64. Do not infer support from USB detection alone.
Audio interfaces and capture hardware
Recording software may launch through Prism, but a low-latency audio driver, mixer application or capture filter can be Intel-only. Check whether the vendor provides an Arm64 driver and control application. If only a generic Windows audio path is available, advanced routing, sample-rate controls or hardware effects may be absent.

VPN, security and anti-cheat software
These products often install network filters or kernel components. The visible client can open under Prism while the connection, protected process or game fails. Require an Arm64 release from the vendor; changing emulation settings cannot make a kernel component load.
Virtual printers, storage filters and other virtual devices
PDF printers, encrypted-storage drivers, backup filters and similar tools operate below the application layer. Confirm Arm64 support for every driver and service before relying on them for production work.
How to request or verify an ARM64 driver
When a device does not work, send the vendor a precise compatibility request rather than a general “Windows 11” question. Include:
- Exact laptop model and Snapdragon X platform.
- Windows 11 edition and build number.
- Peripheral model, hardware revision and connection method.
- Application name and version, including whether it is ARM64, x86 or x64.
- The failed function and the result of testing Windows’ built-in driver.
- Any error text and the date of the last successful driver release.
Ask whether the vendor supports Windows 11 on Arm, whether the driver is compiled for ARM64, which companion utilities are required, and whether all features—not just basic detection—are supported. Request a documented release or compatibility statement rather than relying on a forum claim.

Compare five things before deciding: whether the application is native or emulated, whether the workflow needs a kernel or device driver, the vendor’s update commitment, the features you would lose, and the cost of replacing software or hardware versus using an x86-64 PC.
Use the Windows-on-Arm compatibility directory as a current check
Microsoft links to the Works on WoA compatibility directory, which lists a growing set of Windows-on-Arm applications. Treat an entry as a check for the current application version, not a permanent guarantee. Windows builds, application releases, plug-ins and licensing components change. Confirm the version you intend to deploy and test the hardware-dependent parts of your workflow.
When there is no supported fix
If the application is not usable under Prism and the vendor has no ARM64 release, or if the peripheral has neither an inbox driver nor an Arm64 driver, there is no software switch that can manufacture compatibility. Keep the unsupported device off the production path and choose one of these bounded alternatives:
- Use a vendor-supported ARM64 application or peripheral that provides the required features.
- Run the legacy workflow on an x86-64 Windows computer and move files through a documented, secure process.
- Ask the vendor for a roadmap and reassess after a driver release.
- For non-critical tasks, use the Windows inbox function and accept the features it actually exposes.
A USB-C hub, dock, cable or driver-updater utility cannot create an absent ARM64 driver, and a generic accessory cannot convert an incompatible kernel component. Replacement is justified only when the replacement’s exact model and required features are documented as supported.

A concise decision checklist
- Does the application launch? If not, investigate architecture, installer and Prism behavior.
- Does the application launch but the device fail? Investigate the driver, service, filter or shell extension.
- Is an ARM64 build available? Prefer it for the main application and all companion components.
- Is the exact peripheral supported by an inbox Windows driver or an explicit ARM64 driver?
- Have Windows, firmware and laptop drivers been updated?
- Have you tested the device directly, without a hub or dock?
- Does the supported path provide every feature you need, not just detection?
- If support is absent, have you selected a supported alternative or retained an x86-64 system for that workflow?
