How to Fix Images Not Showing on Websites on Mac

First find the scope of the failure: reload the page, try another website, open the same page in a second browser, and—if possible—test another device on the same network. If images fail only on one site everywhere, the site is probably at fault. If they fail across sites or only in one browser, use the browser and network checks below.

1. Identify whether the website, browser or network is responsible

  1. Reload once. In Safari or Chrome press Command-R. A temporary connection or page-script failure can leave image placeholders behind.
  2. Try several sites. If images are missing on one domain but appear normally elsewhere, the problem is likely limited to that site. If many sites are affected, continue with connection and browser troubleshooting.
  3. Use another browser. Open the URL in Safari and Chrome (or another installed browser). A working second browser points to extensions, cached data or settings in the first.
  4. Test another device on the same Wi-Fi or Ethernet. If the page also lacks images on another computer or phone, Apple says the website is probably the cause. Report the URL and the missing images to its owner rather than changing Mac settings unnecessarily.

Apple’s Safari troubleshooting guide describes this class of failure as a page that is blank, does not load all content or otherwise behaves unexpectedly. Google’s Chrome guide similarly separates site, connection, browser, extension and memory causes.

2. Fix missing images in Safari

Update macOS and restart Safari

Safari is updated with macOS. Install available macOS updates, then quit Safari completely and reopen it. Reload the page with Command-R. If the issue began after Safari or macOS was left running for a long time, a restart can clear a stalled tab process.

Compare a normal window with a Private Window

Choose File > New Private Window, or press Shift-Command-N, and open the same URL. A Private Window does not use the normal window’s existing site data in the same way. If images appear privately, an extension, cookie, cache entry or other stored site state is the likely trigger.

Disable extensions and content blockers

Open Safari > Settings > Extensions (called Preferences in older releases). Turn extensions off temporarily and reload. If the images return, enable extensions one at a time until the failure returns, then update or remove the offending extension. A content blocker can also block image-hosting domains, scripts that insert images or a site’s content-delivery requests; disable it for the affected site rather than leaving every site unblocked.

Remove only the affected site’s data

Before deleting site data, make sure you know the site’s sign-in details and any other information it stores locally. Then open Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data, search for the domain, select it and click Remove. Close the settings window, open a normal Safari window and sign in again if required. Removing one domain preserves data for unrelated sites and is a better first step than clearing everything.

Check settings that control page content

Inspect the Privacy, Security, Websites and Advanced tabs in Safari Settings:

  • Confirm JavaScript is enabled when the site uses scripts to insert or lazy-load images.
  • Review content-blocker permissions for the domain.
  • Check cookie and cross-site tracking behavior if the image host requires a related login or delivery cookie. Apple notes that some sites may require allowing cross-site tracking; treat that as a compatibility test for the specific site, not a universal privacy recommendation.
  • If the site relies on the visitor’s address, test the site’s permission to show your IP address only when necessary.

If iCloud Private Relay is active, reload the page with Reload and Show IP Address from Safari’s page menu. A change in results indicates that the site or its delivery network is incompatible with the relay path; you can report that behavior to the site instead of permanently weakening privacy protections.

Temporarily test VPN, security, proxy and DNS settings

VPN clients, web filters, antivirus network inspection, custom proxy settings and custom DNS can block an image CDN while allowing the main HTML page through. Pause one such service at a time, reload, and restore it immediately after the test. If disabling a service fixes the images, add the site or image host to that product’s allow-list or ask its vendor for a compatible configuration.

3. Fix missing images in Chrome

Check the connection and page address

Verify the URL, Wi-Fi or Ethernet status, and whether other sites load. If the whole connection is unreliable, restart the router or modem and try again. A page can display text from one server while image requests to another server time out.

Update and restart Chrome

Open Chrome > About Google Chrome and install an available update. Quit Chrome from the Dock or with Command-Q, then reopen it from Applications or the Dock. Reload the page.

Use Incognito to isolate extensions and stored data

Choose File > New Incognito Window (or press Shift-Command-N) and visit the URL. If images work there, open Window > Extensions or enter chrome://extensions, disable extensions, and re-enable them one at a time. Privacy, ad-blocking and security extensions are common causes when the page itself loads but image requests do not.

Clear the relevant browsing data

Open Chrome > Settings > Privacy and security > Delete browsing data. Start with cached images and files, and select a suitable time range. Clearing cookies can sign you out and remove preferences, so do it only when needed. Reopen the page after Chrome finishes.

Check firewall, antivirus and memory pressure

Security software can block image domains or unusual resource types. Temporarily test its web or firewall filtering, then create a narrow allow-list rule if it is responsible. Close unused tabs and applications if Chrome is low on memory; Google lists memory pressure as a possible loading cause. As a last browser step, open Settings > Reset settings > Restore settings to their original defaults. Review what will be reset before confirming, because this can disable extensions and clear temporary settings.

4. Safari and Chrome at a glance

Check Safari Chrome
Private test File > New Private Window (Shift-Command-N) File > New Incognito Window (Shift-Command-N)
Site data Safari > Settings > Privacy > Manage Website Data Chrome > Settings > Privacy and security > Delete browsing data
Extension control Safari > Settings > Extensions; review per-site content blockers Window > Extensions or chrome://extensions
Content-affecting settings Privacy, Security, Websites and Advanced tabs; JavaScript, cookies and blockers Extensions, cookies, security software and connection settings
Persistent site problem After reloading, Safari 26 or later may offer “Report a Website Issue” (Safari 26 is included with current updates for macOS Sequoia 15 or later; verify your installed version) Report the URL and symptoms to the site owner; Google’s loading-error guidance covers connection and browser escalation

Neither browser is categorically more reliable. The useful distinction is which private mode, data controls and extension screen you use to isolate the cause.

5. When the website—not your Mac—needs fixing

Contact the site owner or developer when all of these are true: other sites work, the same page fails in more than one browser, and another device on the same network sees the same missing images. Include the exact URL, time, browser and macOS version, whether text loads, and a screenshot of the broken result. The owner may need to repair an expired image URL, a misconfigured content-delivery network, blocked mixed-content request, access-control rule or server outage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If only one browser fails, send the browser name and the result of the Private or Incognito comparison instead; that evidence points to local settings rather than the site.

6. “Images” search results are a separate case

If ordinary pages display pictures but Google Images results are blank, use Google’s dedicated Troubleshoot issues with Google Images guidance. That service can fail independently of the pages reached from its results, so do not assume a general Safari or Chrome image-loading fault.

7. Or skip the browser setup

If you need a dependable screenshot of a page rather than a diagnosis of your Mac’s browser, ScreenshotNeo makes one GET request and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture, removes more than 60 known consent platforms plus newsletter popups and chat widgets, and bills only clean shots: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed. The response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options. These runnable examples capture Stripe; replace the URL with the page you need.

8. Troubleshooting checklist

  • Only one site, all browsers: test another device, then contact the site owner.
  • Only one browser: use Private or Incognito, disable extensions, and remove that site’s stored data.
  • Images return after disabling a blocker: update it or allow the affected domain.
  • Images fail only with VPN, Private Relay or security filtering: test the connection path, then configure a narrow exception.
  • Many sites fail: check Wi-Fi or Ethernet, restart networking equipment, review proxy/DNS settings and test another network.
  • Chrome is sluggish as well as image-free: close tabs and applications, update Chrome and inspect memory use.
  • Deleting data did not help: restore the browser’s default settings only after recording passwords, extensions and site preferences you need.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I clear all browser data first?

No. Start with a Private or Incognito comparison, then remove data for the affected site. Clearing everything can sign you out and erase useful preferences.

Why do text and layout load while images do not?

HTML and image files may come from different hosts or delivery networks. A blocker, DNS/VPN rule, expired image URL or server-side access rule can therefore affect images alone.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Will turning off privacy protections permanently fix the problem?

Not necessarily. Use changes such as allowing cross-site tracking, showing your IP address or pausing Private Relay only as targeted diagnostics, then restore the protection or configure a site-specific exception.
