If images are missing in Safari on your iPad, first determine whether every website is affected or only one. A failure on all sites usually points to the connection, Safari, a VPN, Private Relay, cached website data, or JavaScript. A failure on one site is more likely to be a site-specific compatibility, privacy, or image-delivery problem. Work through the checks below in order, testing the page after each meaningful change.
1. Find out whether the problem is global or site-specific
Open a site you know normally displays images, such as a familiar news or documentation page, and then open the page with missing images. Note whether you see broken-image icons, empty spaces, endlessly loading placeholders, or a completely blank page.
| What you observe | Most useful next test |
|---|---|
| Images fail on many unrelated websites | Test another network, restart the iPad, and check VPN, Private Relay, website data, and JavaScript. |
| Only one website fails | Use Safari’s page menu and per-site settings, try Request Desktop Website, then contact that site’s developer if the issue remains. |
| The page works in another browser but not Safari | Compare Safari’s privacy, JavaScript, cached-data, and mobile-layout settings before assuming the iPad hardware is defective. |
Test with cellular data if your iPad supports it, or join a different Wi‑Fi network. If the images appear on the second connection, the original network, DNS filtering, VPN, or router policy is the likely cause. If the same site fails everywhere while other sites work, treat it as a site-specific problem.
2. Restart the iPad and reload Safari
- Close or leave Safari, then restart the iPad using the normal power-off and restart controls for your model.
- Open Safari again and revisit the page.
- Reload the page from Safari’s reload control. If the site has a login, sign in again if necessary.
A restart clears temporary system and browser state. It does not erase your bookmarks or saved passwords, so it is a safe first step.

3. Check the network, VPN, and iCloud Private Relay
Try another connection
Switch from Wi‑Fi to cellular data, or connect to another Wi‑Fi network. Public, corporate, school, and parental-control networks can block image hosts, advertising domains, content-delivery endpoints, or the scripts that insert images. If another network fixes the page, ask the network administrator to review filtering rather than changing Safari repeatedly.
Temporarily test without a VPN
Apple notes that a VPN can cause some apps or websites to block content from loading. Temporarily disconnect the VPN, reload the affected page, and compare the result. Restore the VPN after the test if it is not responsible. If images work only with the VPN off, check the VPN’s content filters, split-tunneling rules, and DNS settings.
Test iCloud Private Relay for a site-specific failure
When only one website is affected, review iCloud Private Relay and test briefly with it disabled. Some sites handle relay addresses or related privacy protections incorrectly. Re-enable the privacy feature when testing is complete if it was not the cause. A change that fixes one site does not prove Private Relay is unsafe; it indicates that the site’s network or identity handling needs attention.
4. Clear Safari website data
Corrupt cookies, cached responses, old permissions, or stale service-worker data can prevent image requests from being made correctly. Apple’s current iPad path is:

- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Safari.
- Tap Clear History and Website Data and choose the available confirmation.
On iPadOS versions that expose history controls inside Safari, open Safari’s sidebar, choose the history section, select a timeframe, and select the relevant profile when profiles are configured. Clearing this data removes history, cookies, website data, and permissions. Expect to sign in again and reselect choices such as camera, location, or notification access.
After clearing, open the affected site in a fresh tab before restoring extensions or content blockers. If the images return, add back extensions one at a time so you can identify a rule that blocks the image host or its delivery script.
5. Make sure JavaScript is enabled
Many modern sites do not place the final image URL in the initial HTML. JavaScript may fetch the image, select a responsive source, remove a placeholder, or trigger lazy loading. If JavaScript is off, the page can show text while leaving image boxes empty.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Safari.
- Tap Advanced.
- Turn on JavaScript if it is off.
Reload the page after changing the setting. On managed iPads, device-management policy can control JavaScript. If the switch is unavailable or repeatedly returns to an administrator-selected value, ask your school or organization’s administrator to review the Safari restriction. Apple’s Safari settings documentation records AllowJavaScript as enabled by default on supported managed iPadOS configurations, but an administrator can override that setting.

6. Use Safari’s per-site controls
Review Website Settings
With the affected page open, tap Safari’s page menu in the address bar and open Website Settings (the exact menu presentation can vary by iPadOS release). Review content-blocking, camera, microphone, location, and other permissions. Disable a content blocker for this site temporarily and reload. If that restores images, keep the blocker enabled globally and add a narrowly scoped exception or report the blocked image domain to its maintainer.
Request the desktop version
From the same page menu, choose Request Desktop Website when available. This sends the desktop layout request and can use a different responsive-image rule, template, or image CDN path. If the desktop version works while the mobile version does not, the site’s mobile markup or breakpoint logic is probably broken. You can use the desktop view as a workaround, but the website owner needs to fix the mobile implementation.
Check a private tab
Open the page in a Private Browsing tab. A private tab starts with a different cookie and storage context, which helps distinguish account-specific or cached state from a general Safari rendering issue. If it works privately, clear data for the normal profile and check extensions or site permissions.
7. What site owners should inspect
If one website remains broken after network, privacy, data, JavaScript, and layout tests, contact its developer or support team. Include the iPad model, iPadOS version, Safari version if available, URL, network type, whether Request Desktop Website changes the result, and a screenshot of the missing-image state.

Developers should reproduce the page in a real iPad Safari session and use Safari’s Web Inspector and developer tools. Inspect the following:
- Network requests: determine whether image requests are sent, redirected, cancelled, or blocked.
- Status codes: distinguish a missing asset (such as a 404) from an authorization, rate-limit, or server error.
- Content type: confirm that the response is an image type rather than an HTML error page returned with a misleading status.
- Cross-origin policy: check CORS and related response headers when images are fetched from another origin or processed by canvas.
- Lazy loading: verify that scroll observers and deferred scripts run in Safari and that images are not waiting forever for an event that never fires.
- Responsive markup: validate
srcset, sizes, picture sources, media queries, and the selected URL at the iPad viewport. - Privacy and blockers: avoid making essential images depend on third-party trackers, advertising hosts, or scripts commonly blocked by privacy tools.
Safari’s developer documentation identifies Web Inspector as the inspection path for making content work well in Safari. Test both the mobile layout and the desktop-requested layout; they may use different templates and image URLs.
8. A practical decision tree
- All sites fail: try another Wi‑Fi or cellular connection, restart the iPad, test without a VPN, review Private Relay, clear Safari website data, and enable JavaScript.
- Only one site fails: open a private tab, review Website Settings, disable that site’s content blocker temporarily, and try Request Desktop Website.
- The page works after clearing data: sign in again and re-enable extensions one at a time to find the conflicting rule.
- The page works only on another network: investigate DNS, filtering, VPN, or router policy on the original network.
- The page fails only in Safari after every test: send the site owner the reproduction details and request a Safari-specific fix.
9. Common symptoms, causes, and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Broken icons on every site | Network filtering, VPN, Safari state, or JavaScript | Change network, restart, test VPN/Relay, clear data, and enable JavaScript. |
| Images missing only while signed in | Cookie, permission, account, or stale cached state | Test a private tab and clear website data for a fresh session. |
| Mobile page fails; desktop request works | Broken responsive template or mobile image selection | Use desktop mode temporarily and report the mobile rendering defect. |
| Placeholders never become images | JavaScript or lazy-loading failure | Enable JavaScript; the site owner should inspect observer scripts and console errors. |
| Works on cellular but not Wi‑Fi | Router, DNS, or network filtering | Review the Wi‑Fi network’s filtering and DNS policy. |

10. When replacing hardware will not help
There is no evidence-based physical product purchase that directly fixes missing website images in Safari. Before considering repair or replacement, complete the network, Safari, privacy, JavaScript, and site-specific tests above. Hardware service is relevant only when other symptoms indicate a broader iPad display, storage, or system fault—not when websites alone fail to load images.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do images load in Chrome or another browser but not Safari?
The browsers can differ in cached data, JavaScript state, privacy protections, content-blocking extensions, and mobile versus desktop rendering. Compare those settings before concluding that the iPad has a hardware problem.
Will clearing Safari data delete my saved passwords?
Clearing history and website data removes site cookies, history, permissions, and cached data. Safari passwords stored in iCloud Keychain are separate, but you may be signed out of websites.
Should I leave iCloud Private Relay turned off?
No. Disable it only as a diagnostic test. If it is not the cause, turn it back on and ask the affected website to correct its relay or privacy handling.

Who can fix a page that fails only on one website?
The website owner or developer must fix a site-specific compatibility or image-delivery defect. Send them the URL, iPadOS and Safari details, network used, and the results of the desktop-request and private-tab tests.
