If a Google Sheets image is blank, start with the formula and the URL—not with cell formatting. Google’s documented syntax is IMAGE(url, [mode], [height], [width]). The URL must include http:// or https://, and it must be quoted text or a reference to a cell containing the URL. Direct URLs hosted at drive.google.com and SVG files are not supported by the IMAGE function.
This guide walks through a reliable diagnosis, explains every image mode, separates formula limits from the Insert image workflow, and shows what to do when access differs between viewers.
Start with a valid IMAGE formula
Use the documented form with a direct URL:
=IMAGE("https://example.com/image.jpg")
Or place the URL in a cell and reference it:
=IMAGE(A2)
Check these details before changing anything else:
- The URL includes a protocol such as
https://. A value such aswww.example.com/photo.jpgis incomplete. - The URL is inside quotation marks when written directly in the formula.
- A cell reference points to the cell containing the URL, not to a label or page title.
- The link identifies the image resource itself, rather than a web page that merely displays an image.
These examples demonstrate syntax only; an arbitrary example address is not guaranteed to contain an accessible image.
Check whether the link is an image URL Sheets can use
A page URL is not necessarily an image URL
Copying the address of a gallery, product page, social post, or image viewer often gives Sheets an HTML page instead of an image resource. Open the address in a private browser window and verify what it returns. If it presents a page, find the site’s actual image address or use a source that provides direct image URLs.

Do not use a Drive viewer URL with IMAGE
Google’s IMAGE help explicitly says: “Important: You can only use URLs that aren’t hosted at drive.google.com. SVG file format isn’t supported.” A drive.google.com viewer link therefore is not a supported direct input for this function. Do not assume that changing the sharing setting or modifying the Drive URL creates a supported IMAGE source.
SVG is unsupported
If the resource is an SVG, replace it with a supported raster image or use Google Sheets’ insertion workflow instead. Do not diagnose an SVG failure as a cell-size problem.
Review image format and size expectations
Google’s separate image insertion help documents PNG, JPG, and GIF images under 50 MB for images added inside or over cells. That guidance applies to the insertion workflow; it is not an exhaustive list of every possible URL-hosted IMAGE behavior.
Keep the distinction clear:
- IMAGE formula: requires a URL that meets the function’s documented restrictions, including the protocol requirement, the
drive.google.comexclusion, and no SVG. - Insert image: supports the formats and under-50-MB limit stated on Google’s insertion help page.
Check the mode and cell dimensions
The optional arguments control how an image is rendered. They do not resize the spreadsheet cell itself.
Rank #2
| Formula | Result |
|---|---|
=IMAGE(url) or mode 1 |
Fits the image in the cell while maintaining its aspect ratio. |
| Mode 2 | Stretches or compresses the image to fill the cell. |
| Mode 3 | Uses the image’s original size; part may be cropped when the cell is smaller. |
| Mode 4 | Uses custom dimensions supplied by height and width. |
For custom dimensions, mode 4 is required:
=IMAGE(A2, 4, 120, 240)
If an image exists but looks distorted, unexpectedly cropped, or too small, inspect the mode and the row height or column width before treating the URL as broken. None of the modes changes those row and column dimensions.
Test access in the viewer’s account
An image can work for the person who created a sheet and fail for another viewer. Google Workspace administrative guidance notes that a Google-hosted image URL can remain accessible only while the user who generated it has access to the file. That makes account and file permissions an important diagnostic when results differ between people.
- Open the sheet while signed in as the affected viewer.
- Test the source URL in that same account and browser context.
- Confirm that the viewer can access the underlying file or host.
- Compare the result with the creator’s view.
This check identifies an access difference; changing sharing settings is not a guaranteed fix for every IMAGE formula.
Use Insert image when a formula is the wrong tool
Google Sheets supports images inside cells and images over cells. In the spreadsheet, choose Insert → Image, then select Image in cell or Image over cells. Google also documents pasting an image from a desktop or the web.

Choose Image in cell when the picture belongs to a row or table record. Choose Image over cells when it should float independently of the grid. An image in a cell cannot share that cell with text, so place labels in an adjacent cell.
The insertion workflow is useful when the source is not a supported direct URL, when you need a manually placed picture, or when a formula is unnecessary. It is not a dynamic replacement for a URL-driven formula.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Inspect the exact value. Click the formula bar and verify that the formula is actually
IMAGE, that the URL is quoted or referenced correctly, and that it begins withhttp://orhttps://. - Open the URL directly. Confirm that it resolves to an image resource rather than an HTML page, login screen, redirect, or expired link.
- Remove unsupported sources. Replace
drive.google.comURLs and SVG files; Google documents both as unsupported forIMAGE. - Check rendering arguments. Try the default mode first. If the image is present but malformed, correct the mode, dimensions, row height, and column width.
- Test the viewer context. Reopen the sheet using the account that reports the blank cell and verify access to the source.
- Switch workflows. Use Insert → Image inside or over cells when the formula’s URL restrictions or dynamic behavior do not fit the job.
Common symptoms, causes, and fixes
| Symptom | Likely check | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Blank cell immediately | Formula syntax or missing protocol | Use quoted text or a cell reference and include https://. |
| Formula points to a Drive link | Unsupported host | Do not use a drive.google.com URL with IMAGE; use a supported source or Insert image. |
| SVG does not appear | Unsupported format | Use a raster image or the insertion workflow. |
| Image is stretched | Mode 2 | Use mode 1 to preserve aspect ratio. |
| Image is cropped | Mode 3 or a small cell | Try mode 1, enlarge the cell, or use mode 4 with suitable dimensions. |
| Works for one person only | Viewer access | Test the URL while signed in as the affected viewer and check file permissions. |
| Image is not part of a dynamic table | Wrong workflow | Use Insert → Image in cell or over cells. |
When you need a clean, dependable image URL
If the source is a web page rather than a static image, you may need to create a screenshot first. ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server that can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF from one request. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.
Use the resulting image URL only if it is publicly reachable by the people viewing your sheet and is compatible with Google’s IMAGE restrictions. ScreenshotNeo does not make a Drive URL valid, and it does not change Google’s SVG rule.

Apps Script URLs are a separate case
The Apps Script CellImage reference documents getContentUrl() as returning a Google-hosted URL. It does not state that this URL can be supplied to the IMAGE function. Treat it as an Apps Script value, not as a guaranteed formula workaround, and continue to apply the drive.google.com restriction documented for IMAGE.
Choosing the right workflow
| Need | Best starting point |
|---|---|
| Images should update from URL values in a table | IMAGE, provided each direct URL meets Google’s restrictions. |
| Manual picture inside a record | Insert → Image → Image in cell. |
| Floating diagram or illustration | Insert → Image → Image over cells. |
| Source is a web page that must be rendered first | Create a screenshot, then verify that its resulting URL is accessible to sheet viewers. |
| Different viewers see different results | Investigate account and file access before changing the formula. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an image URL have to end in .jpg or .png?
The documented requirements do not establish that a particular filename extension is mandatory. Test whether the URL returns an accessible image resource and observe the documented host and SVG restrictions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Can making a Google Drive file public fix IMAGE?
Google explicitly excludes URLs hosted at drive.google.com from IMAGE. Public sharing does not turn that host into a documented IMAGE source; use Insert image or another supported URL.
Why does changing the row height not fix a blank image?
Cell dimensions affect rendering and cropping, but they do not repair an invalid formula, unsupported host, SVG source, or inaccessible URL.
Can I put text beside an image in the same cell?
No. Google’s insertion help states that a cell containing an image cannot also contain text. Put the text in another cell.
