How to Fix Image Retention, Flicker, or Black Screens on an OLED Gaming Monitor

First identify which symptom you have: a faint mark left by static content, flicker confined to Windows or an application, or a complete loss of picture. Those symptoms have different fixes. Check whether the monitor’s own on-screen menu appears, note the exact model, and then work through the matching procedure below.

Start by separating the three symptoms

OLED troubleshooting is easier when you do not call every visible problem “burn-in.” A logo, taskbar, health bar, or menu that remains faintly visible after the picture changes is possible image retention. Flicker is a changing brightness or unstable picture, often related to a Windows display driver or an incompatible application. A black screen is a missing picture or signal and can originate in power, input selection, a cable, Windows display mode, a graphics driver, or the monitor itself.

What you see Useful first clue First action
A faint logo, taskbar, game HUD, or menu remains after changing content The mark follows a previously static element rather than replacing the whole picture Use the monitor’s model-specific pixel or image-cleaning function
The picture flashes or brightness changes while Windows is running Compare the Task Manager window with the rest of the desktop Use Windows driver/application troubleshooting
The display is completely black Check power, selected input, cable connection, and whether the monitor menu appears Isolate the cable, monitor, computer, and display configuration

The monitor menu is an important dividing line. If the menu appears normally, the panel can at least generate its own on-screen image and the problem may be on the computer, input, cable, or signal path. If the menu is also absent, continue with power and hardware checks and then use the manufacturer’s model-specific support route.

Before changing settings, record the model and symptom

  • Write down the complete monitor model number, not just the product family. Maintenance controls and menu names vary between models and generations.
  • Note whether the mark is visible on every color or only on certain backgrounds, and whether it changes when you switch to a new image.
  • For flicker, record whether it begins before Windows loads, only on the desktop, or only in one game or application.
  • For a black screen, check whether the power indicator is on and whether the monitor’s own menu or input-selection screen can be opened.
  • Record the connected port on the monitor and computer, such as HDMI or DisplayPort, and list any dock, adapter, receiver, or switch in the path.

Keep the monitor manual open while you work. The names “Image Cleaning,” “Pixel Refresh,” “Panel Refresh,” and “Pixel Shift” are not interchangeable universal standards; manufacturers use them for different operations.

Fix a faint image or mark left by static content

1. Treat it as possible temporary image retention first

Static taskbars, icons, channel logos, and game menus can leave a temporary after-image when they remain on an OLED screen for an extended period. LG’s monitor guidance also notes that moving the monitor or a substantial room-temperature change can produce temporary marks. A temporary mark is not proof of permanent burn-in, so do not jump directly to a panel-failure conclusion.

Change to varied full-screen content and observe whether the mark fades. Avoid leaving the same high-contrast element displayed while you diagnose it. Do not press, rub, scrape, or apply liquid to the panel; mechanical cleaning cannot repair pixel-level retention and can damage the surface.

2. Run the monitor’s cleaning function

  1. Open the monitor’s on-screen menu.
  2. Find the OLED-care, panel-care, or maintenance section named in your manual.
  3. Choose the model’s image-cleaning or pixel-refresh command and confirm the operation.
  4. Leave the monitor connected to power and do not interrupt the process unless the manual explicitly says otherwise.
  5. After it finishes, display changing content and check whether the mark remains.

On the cited LG standard-monitor guidance, the path is OLED Care > Image Cleaning. LG says Image Cleaning may also run automatically when the monitor enters power-saving mode or is turned off after more than four hours of use since its previous cleaning. Menu labels and automatic behavior can differ on another LG model, so use the instructions for your exact display rather than assuming that timing applies to all OLED monitors.

3. Understand the different maintenance cycles

Dell’s Alienware guidance describes two separate operations on specified models. Its Pixel Refresh is a short cycle of approximately 6–8 minutes. Its Panel Refresh is a longer procedure of about one hour and has model-specific conditions or triggers. Those durations belong to the cited Alienware instructions; they are not universal OLED timings and should not be imposed on a different brand or model.

Function named in the guidance Approximate duration stated How to use the information
LG Image Cleaning Automatic trigger may occur after more than four hours of use since the previous cleaning, when entering power-saving mode or switching off Use the OLED Care menu and the exact LG manual; the trigger is model-dependent
Dell Alienware Pixel Refresh Approximately 6–8 minutes Run only as described for a supported Alienware model
Dell Alienware Panel Refresh About one hour Use only when the specified model’s instructions call for it

Repeatedly forcing a long maintenance cycle because a mark has not immediately disappeared is not a general cure. Follow the model’s recommended interval and cancellation instructions.

4. Check model-specific pixel-shift behavior

Samsung advises checking whether Pixel Shift is enabled. On some 2022 and 2023 OLED monitors, Samsung also describes a visible edge row or column as normal panel construction. That explanation is specific to the models and generations covered by its US guidance. Do not use it to dismiss an unrelated line, a new defect, or a symptom on another display.

5. Know when cleaning has not solved the problem

Permanent image retention is possible. Dell describes that possibility for its covered Alienware products, and LG directs owners with unresolved marks to manufacturer support or a technician. If the mark remains after the exact maintenance procedure, document it with photographs on several solid-color backgrounds and contact the manufacturer. Ask how the model’s warranty and service policy define image retention; coverage and conditions are model- and region-specific.

Fix screen flicker in Windows 10 or Windows 11

Use Task Manager as a diagnostic comparison

Microsoft recommends comparing the Task Manager window with the rest of the display. This is a clue about the Windows software path, not a laboratory test of the OLED panel.

  1. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If it does not open, right-click the taskbar and choose Task Manager.
  2. Move or resize the Task Manager window while the flicker is occurring.
  3. If Task Manager flickers along with the rest of the screen, investigate the display driver first.
  4. If Task Manager remains steady while other windows flicker, an incompatible application is a more likely direction to investigate.

A driver-related pattern does not prove that the monitor is healthy, and an application-related pattern does not prove that the panel is defective. The comparison simply tells you where to begin.

Reset and manage the graphics driver

  1. Press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B to reset the graphics driver. Microsoft says a beep or a brief flicker may indicate that the reset succeeded.
  2. If flicker returns, open Device Manager > Display adapters, right-click the graphics device, and use the available driver update, rollback, or uninstall option appropriate to what changed.
  3. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, try Roll Back Driver when Windows provides that option.
  4. If only one application flickers while Task Manager stays stable, update, repair, disable its hardware-acceleration option when available, or temporarily uninstall that application to confirm the relationship.

Use the graphics-card maker’s or computer maker’s instructions for obtaining a compatible driver. Do not install an unrelated driver package merely because it has a newer date.

Check whether the flicker is outside Windows

Restart the computer and watch the manufacturer logo, firmware screen, or the monitor’s own menu. Flicker that appears in the monitor menu, before Windows loads, on more than one computer, or after the computer-side steps have been exhausted is not diagnosed by the Task Manager test. At that point, use the monitor maker’s support procedure for the exact model. Note whether changing the input or cable changes the behavior before requesting service.

Fix a black screen or “no signal” condition

1. Confirm power and input selection

  1. Verify that the monitor’s power cable is firmly seated at the monitor and wall or power strip.
  2. Press the monitor’s power button and check for a power indicator.
  3. Open the monitor menu or input selector. Choose the input that is physically connected to the computer.
  4. If the monitor has several inputs, test the intended HDMI or DisplayPort input directly rather than relying on automatic input detection.

A lit power indicator does not guarantee that the correct input is selected. Conversely, a completely unresponsive monitor requires power and hardware troubleshooting before Windows settings can help.

2. Reseat and simplify the signal path

Microsoft Support states: “Ensure all cables (HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA) are securely connected.” Disconnect and reconnect the video cable at both ends. Inspect the connector for damage and make sure it is fully inserted; do not force a plug in the wrong orientation.

  1. Remove docks, adapters, KVM switches, receivers, and extension devices for the first test when practical.
  2. Connect the monitor directly to the computer with one known-good cable.
  3. Try another output port on the computer if one is available.
  4. Try another input on the monitor if it supports the same signal type.
  5. Test the monitor with another computer or test the computer with another display.

Microsoft recommends trying another cable or system as part of isolating a blank-screen cause. Change one item at a time and note the result; changing the cable, port, and computer simultaneously hides which component fixed or caused the problem.

3. Reset Windows display output

  1. Press Windows+Ctrl+Shift+B to reset the graphics driver. Listen for a beep or watch for a brief flicker.
  2. Press Windows+P to open the projection menu, then select the mode that matches your setup, such as PC screen only or Extend.
  3. If the black screen began after a graphics-driver update, use the available driver rollback option. If the driver is corrupted, update or reinstall it using the computer or graphics-device manufacturer’s supported package.

These shortcuts affect Windows output; they cannot repair a disconnected cable, failed monitor electronics, or permanent panel damage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Isolate the failure with substitution

Test result What it points toward Next move
The monitor menu appears, but the computer picture does not Input selection, cable, computer output, Windows display mode, or graphics driver Repeat direct-cable, alternate-port, Windows+P, and driver checks
A different cable restores the picture The original cable or its connection is suspect Use a cable that matches both ports and the required resolution and refresh rate
The monitor works with another computer The original computer, output port, driver, or display configuration Continue on the computer side and test another output
The computer works with another display, but this monitor shows no menu or signal The monitor, its power path, or its input hardware Follow the monitor manufacturer’s support and service process
The symptom remains with multiple cables and computers A monitor-side or broader hardware fault is more plausible Stop repeating generic Windows fixes and contact model-specific support

This table is a practical isolation sequence, not a manufacturer-published universal diagnostic test. A single result can have more than one cause, especially when adapters or unusual signal formats remain in the path.

When buying a replacement cable makes sense

Buy a replacement HDMI or DisplayPort cable only after cable testing makes the connection a plausible cause. Match the connector type on both devices, then confirm that the cable can carry the monitor’s selected resolution and refresh rate. A cable chosen only by its marketing label may still be unsuitable for the required bandwidth or connector combination.

  • For an HDMI setup, verify HDMI is present on both ends and that the cable supports the required display mode.
  • For a DisplayPort setup, verify the DisplayPort connector and the required resolution and refresh-rate capability.
  • Remove unnecessary adapters during diagnosis; each additional connection is another possible failure point.
  • Do not expect a new cable to remove image retention or repair a defective OLED panel.

Common mistakes that make diagnosis harder

  • Calling every mark burn-in: temporary retention can follow static content, movement, or temperature change. Run the correct maintenance function before concluding that it is permanent.
  • Using another model’s maintenance timing: LG, Dell, and Samsung describe different controls and conditions. Pixel Refresh, Panel Refresh, Image Cleaning, and Pixel Shift are model-specific features.
  • Changing several variables at once: if you replace the cable, switch inputs, update Windows, and add an adapter in one attempt, you cannot identify the cause.
  • Ignoring the monitor menu: whether the menu appears separates many computer-side problems from monitor-side symptoms.
  • Assuming a driver clue is a panel diagnosis: the Task Manager comparison only helps select a Windows troubleshooting direction.
  • Continuing generic fixes after isolation is complete: persistent marks, menu flicker, or a monitor that fails with multiple systems needs model-specific support rather than endless resets.

A compact decision path

  1. Is the symptom a mark or a missing picture? If it is a mark left by a static element, use the image-retention section. If the whole picture disappears, use the black-screen section.
  2. Does the monitor’s own menu appear? A visible menu lets you verify input and focus on the signal path; an absent menu keeps power and monitor hardware in scope.
  3. Does the problem occur before Windows loads? If yes, Windows application troubleshooting is unlikely to be the first step.
  4. Does Task Manager flicker with the rest of Windows? If yes, investigate the display driver; if no, investigate the incompatible application pattern.
  5. Does a different cable, port, or computer change the result? Use that substitution result to decide whether the connection or one device needs attention.
  6. Has the model-specific maintenance or isolation procedure failed? Record the model, tests, and results, then contact the manufacturer or an authorized technician.

When to stop troubleshooting yourself

Stop repeating cleaning cycles or software resets when a mark remains after the manufacturer’s procedure, when the monitor menu itself flickers, or when the monitor stays blank with known-good connections and another computer. Give support the exact model, region, purchase information if requested, the symptom’s first date, and the tests that changed or failed to change it. Manufacturer support terms differ by model and region, so do not assume that a retention mark or panel fault is covered in the same way across products.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
