One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchIf Windows will not update, first run the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, and check the exact failure code in Update history. Then follow the code-specific repair, checking power, internet access, storage, system files, and upgrade compatibility. If the computer runs Windows 10, also check whether the problem is simply that support ended on October 14, 2025.
Start with the safe checks
Before changing update components or repairing Windows, protect your data. Microsoft’s guidance says to back up personal files before trying update fixes. A simple method is to insert a USB drive and copy important files from folders such as Documents, Desktop, Pictures, and any application-specific storage. A backup does not repair Windows, but it limits the consequences if an upgrade or later recovery step fails. Open several copied files from the USB drive so you know the backup is usable rather than assuming that a copy operation completed correctly.

- Connect the computer to mains power. Do not begin a feature upgrade on a low battery.
- Confirm that the internet connection works. Windows Update must reach Microsoft’s download and update services.
- Check free space on the Windows drive. Large cumulative and feature updates need working space to download, unpack, and roll back if necessary.
- Save open work. When Windows requests a restart, choose Update and restart or leave the computer on until the process completes.
- Disconnect nonessential external hardware while troubleshooting, but leave any backup drive connected until the copy is verified.
Do not start by disabling security software or editing disk partitions. Microsoft associates those actions with particular errors and situations, not with every failed update. Also avoid repeatedly forcing the power off during an installation: an interrupted setup can leave a pending cleanup or incomplete package that creates a different error on the next attempt.

Windows 11
- Open the Get Help app from the Start menu.
- Search for Windows Update troubleshooter and start the automated diagnostic.
- Allow it to run its checks and apply the repairs it offers.
- Restart the computer, then open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Microsoft specifically recommends this automated Get Help workflow as the starting point on Windows 11. It diagnoses common update problems and attempts several routine repairs without requiring command-line work. Let the scan finish even if it pauses while checking services; closing it early can leave its proposed repair unapplied.

Older Windows interfaces
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, choose Run the troubleshooter, and follow the prompts.
- Restart when it finishes and check for updates again.
If the troubleshooter reports that it could not identify a problem, continue with the exact error code rather than repeatedly running the same scan. A clean diagnostic result does not prove that a driver, proxy, or hardware requirement is compatible with the next feature release.
Record the exact update error
Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history. Find the failed update and write down its code, including every letter, number, and leading zero. The code identifies a likely branch: corrupted download data, a timeout, damaged component files, a blocked upgrade, a pending cleanup, or an unsupported device. Two failures that look identical in the Windows Update screen can require completely different repairs.
Note the update’s KB identifier, if Windows displays one, and whether the failure occurred while downloading, installing, or restarting. That context helps distinguish a network timeout from a component-store failure. Take a screenshot or copy the text before retrying, because a later attempt can replace the most useful entry in Update history.
Use the following guide as a triage map. It does not make every code a diagnosis; if the same code returns after the listed action, move to the broader repair and escalation steps below.
| Error code | What it commonly indicates | First action |
|---|---|---|
0x8007000d |
Invalid or corrupted update data | Redownload the update and retry. A fresh download is the appropriate first response to damaged update data. |
0x800705b4 |
The installation took too long or was interrupted | Keep the computer powered and connected, avoid signing out or restarting during installation, and retry. |
0x80240034 |
An incomplete update or a connection problem | Restart, verify the connection, and check for updates again so Windows can complete or redownload the package. |
0x800f0922 |
Insufficient space, component trouble, inability to reach update servers, VPN interference, or too little room in the System Reserved partition | Check free space and connectivity first. Do not resize or edit partitions casually; use a qualified recovery procedure if the System Reserved partition is the suspected cause. |
0x80073712 |
A required Windows file is damaged or missing | Run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth from an elevated command window, restart, and try Windows Update again. |
0x800f081f or 0x800f0831 |
Component-store corruption | Run DISM RestoreHealth, then Sfc.exe /Scannow, restart, and retry the update. |
0xC1900107 |
Cleanup from a previous installation is still pending | Restart first. If the code remains, run Disk Cleanup and select temporary and system files, then retry. |
0xC1900200–0x20008 or 0xC1900202–0x20008 |
The computer may not meet minimum requirements for the target upgrade | Check the target Windows version’s hardware requirements before attempting the upgrade again. |
0x800F0923 or 0xC1900101 |
An incompatible driver or software component is blocking the upgrade | Update or remove the conflicting component using the hardware manufacturer’s or Microsoft’s instructions, then retry. |
0x80200056 |
The upgrade was interrupted by a restart or sign-out | Plug in the computer, leave it on, and run the upgrade again without signing out or restarting. |
0x80072EFD, 0x80072EFE, or 0x80D02002 |
A timeout while downloading; a firewall or proxy may be blocking Microsoft download addresses | Check the network, proxy, and firewall path. If the device is managed by an organization, ask its administrator to verify that Microsoft update addresses are allowed. |
Repair damaged Windows system files
Use these commands when the code points to component corruption, or when the troubleshooter and basic checks have failed. They repair Windows’ own image and protected files; they are not a universal answer to hardware, compatibility, or end-of-support problems. Run them in the order shown, because SFC can depend on a healthy component store.
Run DISM RestoreHealth
- Open Start and search for Terminal or Command Prompt.
- Choose Run as administrator and approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand press Enter. - Let the operation finish. Do not close the window merely because progress appears paused.
- Restart Windows and check for updates.
Run System File Checker
For component-store errors such as 0x800f081f and 0x800f0831, run SFC after DISM:
- Open an elevated Terminal or Command Prompt again.
- Enter
Sfc.exe /Scannowand press Enter. - Wait for verification to reach 100 percent, restart, and run Windows Update.
If either command reports that it could not complete repairs, record the message and use Microsoft’s update-error guidance or professional support rather than repeating commands indefinitely. A successful command only means that the specified check completed; it does not guarantee that every update failure is fixed. If DISM appears to need servicing files that are unavailable locally, keep the internet connection active and do not interrupt the scan.

Resolve connection, VPN, proxy, and storage problems
Connection and power
For timeout codes and interrupted installations, use a stable connection, keep the computer plugged in, and leave it awake through the download and restart stages. Avoid switching networks halfway through an upgrade. On a laptop, close the lid only if its power settings are known to keep the device running. If a home connection is unreliable, retry when the connection is stable rather than repeatedly cancelling a partially downloaded package.
VPN, proxy, and firewall paths
The timeout codes 0x80072EFD, 0x80072EFE, and 0x80D02002 can occur when a firewall or proxy blocks Microsoft download URLs. Disconnecting a VPN can be a targeted test when 0x800f0922 specifically points to VPN interference, but do not treat security-disabling as a general fix. On a work or school computer, network policy may be intentional; the administrator must verify the proxy and firewall configuration. Reconnect any required corporate VPN after testing so the device remains compliant with its organization’s policy.
Free space and the System Reserved partition
Remove or move large personal files only after confirming that the backup is usable. Windows’ Disk Cleanup can remove temporary and system files when a pending-installation code such as 0xC1900107 remains. The System Reserved partition is a separate, sensitive area used by Windows startup and upgrade processes. If 0x800f0922 persists despite adequate free space and connectivity, obtain a documented repair procedure or qualified help rather than changing partition sizes on a live system.
Check whether the computer is eligible for the upgrade
Codes in the 0xC1900200–0x20008 and 0xC1900202–0x20008 ranges indicate that the device may not meet the target Windows version’s minimum requirements. A failed upgrade in this category is not necessarily a broken Windows Update service. Confirm the target version, installed edition, system architecture, available storage, and other requirements before trying again. An installer that is correct for one edition or architecture may not be appropriate for another.
Codes 0x800F0923 and 0xC1900101 instead point toward an incompatible driver or software component. Identify recently changed hardware, drivers, or system software and consult the manufacturer’s or Microsoft’s compatibility instructions. Update or remove only the component implicated by the guidance; removing random drivers can create a second problem. If the error appears after reconnecting a peripheral, disconnect that nonessential device and check its driver documentation before attempting another upgrade.
Understand Windows 10’s support status
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. Therefore, a Windows 10 computer that cannot find a newer update may be at the end of its supported servicing period rather than suffering a temporary download failure.
Check the installed Windows edition and version before spending time on repairs. If the desired release requires a newer Windows version, verify that the hardware meets its requirements and plan a supported upgrade. Do not interpret the absence of post-support updates as proof that the computer is infected or that Windows Update is damaged. A repair can restore the update mechanism, but it cannot make an unsupported release receive free post-support servicing.

Use Windows Installation Assistant or installation media only as a later step
For a feature upgrade that still fails after the troubleshooter, system-file repair, connectivity checks, and compatibility review, Microsoft’s error guidance lists the Windows Installation Assistant, DISM repair, and resetting Windows Update components as available approaches. Resetting update components is more invasive than restarting or running the troubleshooter, so back up first and follow Microsoft’s documented sequence for the installed Windows version. Do not substitute commands from an unrelated Windows release or delete update folders simply because an internet guide recommends it.
A manual ISO or bootable USB installation-media route is a fallback, not a universal repair. Before using it:
- Back up personal files and verify that the backup can be opened.
- Confirm the Windows edition, system architecture, and exact target version.
- Use Microsoft’s download and media-creation tools; a blank USB drive does not contain Windows by itself.
- Understand which installation choice you are making and what it does to applications, settings, and files.
- Keep the computer on mains power throughout setup.
Installation media does not bypass licensing and does not cure an incompatible device, blocked network, damaged hardware component, or unsupported Windows release. It is a way to deliver a known Windows installer after you have established that the target version is appropriate. The same USB drive can be useful for backup, but creating bootable media may erase its existing contents, so use a separate drive or copy its files elsewhere first.

| Approach | Invasiveness | Internet or media needed | When it fits | Data-risk consideration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Restart, power, connection, and storage checks | Low | Internet for the retry; no installation media | Interrupted, slow, or incomplete downloads | Normally preserves apps and files; still save work before restarting. |
| Windows Update troubleshooter | Low | Internet recommended | First response on Windows 11 and older supported interfaces | Designed as a routine diagnostic; back up before broader repairs. |
| Error-specific redownload or cleanup | Low to moderate | Internet; Disk Cleanup is local | 0x8007000d, 0x80240034, or 0xC1900107 |
Usually preserves personal data, but do not delete files you have not backed up. |
| DISM and SFC | Moderate | DISM normally needs access to Windows servicing sources; no USB by itself | Damaged or missing component files | Repair commands target Windows files, but a backup remains the prudent prerequisite. |
| Reset Windows Update components | Moderate to high | Internet for a new update download | Persistent update-service corruption after simpler steps | Follow Microsoft’s exact procedure for your version; do not improvise deletions. |
| Installation Assistant, ISO, or bootable USB | High | Internet and, for media, a suitable USB drive | Feature upgrades that fail through the normal channel | Choices determine whether apps and files are retained; verify backups and edition before setup. |
When to stop retrying and escalate
- The same error returns after its documented first action, a restart, and system-file repair.
- DISM or SFC cannot complete, or reports unrepaired corruption.
- The device may be below the target version’s minimum requirements.
- A driver or application is implicated but cannot be safely updated or removed.
- The computer is managed by an employer or school and a proxy, firewall, or update policy may be involved.
- You are considering partition edits, a reset, or a reinstall and the backup has not been verified.
At that point, provide the technician or administrator with the Windows edition and version, the failed update’s KB identifier if shown, the complete error code, the time of failure, and the steps already attempted. This prevents repeating generic fixes and focuses the diagnosis on compatibility, servicing corruption, or network policy. Keep screenshots of any command output or installer message, but remove passwords and other sensitive information before sharing them.
Optional shortcut after the manual fixes
Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut for Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7. Where possible, it addresses more than 100 common Windows issues, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, and shared DLL files; it can also adjust settings, clean temporary and cache files, check selected Windows settings and missing updates, and provide tools such as a real-time boost, file shredder, and app-crash log. Results vary, it complements an antivirus rather than replacing one, and no tool repairs every crash. A free trial is available by category for at least two days, followed by a paid subscription.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFrequently Asked Questions
Why won’t my computer update even after I restart it?
A restart clears some interrupted states, but it cannot fix every cause. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter, then open Update history and record the exact code. Corrupted downloads, damaged component files, blocked Microsoft URLs, incompatible drivers, and unsupported hardware each require a different next step.
Can a USB drive fix Windows Update?
A USB drive is useful for backing up personal files and can later hold bootable Windows installation media. It does not contain Windows automatically, bypass licensing, or repair a network, compatibility, or component-store problem. Use Microsoft’s download and media-creation tools only after confirming the edition, architecture, and target version.
Should I disable antivirus or my firewall before updating?
No. Do not disable security protection as a general first step. Timeout codes can involve a firewall or proxy blocking Microsoft download addresses, and a VPN can be relevant to a specific 0x800f0922 case. On a managed computer, ask the administrator to verify policy instead of changing security settings yourself.
How much free space does Windows Update need?
The required amount varies by update and device. Confirm that the Windows drive has practical working room for downloading, unpacking, installing, and rolling back. If 0x800f0922 appears, check storage and connectivity first, and do not alter the System Reserved partition casually.

Run the troubleshooter, restart, and check Update history again. Record the failed update’s KB identifier, timing, and whether it failed during download, installation, or restart. If no code appears, continue with power, connection, storage, and compatibility checks rather than repeating the same diagnostic indefinitely.
Does DISM replace System File Checker?
No. DISM repairs the Windows component image, while SFC checks protected system files. For component-store errors such as 0x800f081f or 0x800f0831, run DISM RestoreHealth first, then Sfc.exe /Scannow, restart, and retry Windows Update. Neither command fixes every hardware, network, or support-lifecycle issue.
Will installation media keep my apps and files?
That depends on the installation choice. Installation Assistant, an ISO, and bootable USB are higher-risk options than a normal update, and their choices determine whether applications, settings, and files are retained. Verify a backup, edition, architecture, and target version before starting, and keep the computer on mains power.
When should I ask a technician or administrator for help?
Escalate when the same code returns after its documented action and system-file repair, DISM or SFC reports unrepaired corruption, requirements or drivers are uncertain, a work or school proxy is involved, or you are considering partition edits or reinstallation. Provide the edition, version, KB identifier, code, timing, and steps already tried.

The Bottom Line
Back up your files, keep the computer powered and connected, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, and record the exact code in Update history. Match that code to a targeted redownload, cleanup, DISM/SFC repair, network check, or compatibility review instead of applying random fixes. Treat a USB as backup or carefully prepared installation media, not as a guaranteed cure. If the PC runs Windows 10, remember that free support and security updates ended on October 14, 2025; a supported upgrade may be the real solution.
