When an HP Pavilion will not install a Windows 10 update, start with the low-risk checks—backup, restart, network, storage and the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter—before resetting update files or changing drivers. Error 0xC1900101 usually indicates an incompatible driver, while codes such as 0x8007000d more often point to damaged update files. Your troubleshooting plan also depends on Windows 10’s lifecycle: Microsoft ended free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance and security fixes on October 14, 2025. A Pavilion that is already on the final supported Windows 10 release may have no newer free payload to download.
Before troubleshooting: protect your files and identify the situation
Windows Update normally preserves personal data, but changing services, removing drivers or working with firmware introduces avoidable risk. Copy documents, photos, browser exports and other irreplaceable files to an external drive or another trusted location before making changes. If Windows will not start reliably, use a recovery drive or another computer to secure the files first.

- Record the exact error code and the point of failure: download, install, restart, rollback or “undoing changes.”
- Open Settings > System > About and note the Pavilion model, Windows edition and OS build.
- Confirm whether the machine is already on the final Windows 10 release. After October 14, 2025, repeated checks cannot produce free post-support security or feature payloads that Microsoft no longer publishes for Windows 10.
Keep the charger connected during every long install and especially during BIOS work. Do not interrupt a restart simply because the screen appears unchanged for several minutes; interrupting firmware or a recovery phase can leave the laptop unbootable.

Restart and check the restart state
Select Start > Power > Restart, not Shut down followed by a quick power-on. A restart clears a pending update transaction and releases files held by services. After Windows returns, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

Use a stable connection
Connect to reliable Wi-Fi or Ethernet. If possible, test the Pavilion on a different network to distinguish a laptop problem from a router or captive-portal problem. Temporarily disconnect a VPN while checking for updates; restore it after testing. Avoid metered or intermittently dropping connections during a multi-gigabyte download.
Make enough room on the system drive
Windows needs working space for the download, unpacking and rollback files in addition to the size shown for the update. In File Explorer, open This PC and inspect the free space on the drive containing Windows, normally C:. If it is nearly full, remove only files you recognize, empty the Recycle Bin and move large personal files to external storage. Microsoft notes that a USB drive may be needed when storage is insufficient for an update. Do not delete arbitrary files inside the Windows directory.
Disconnect unnecessary hardware
Unplug nonessential USB storage, docks, printers and other peripherals while retrying. Leave the charger, keyboard or mouse you need, and reconnect devices after a successful update. A peripheral driver can hold up setup even when the update itself is healthy.

2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Windows 10 includes a diagnostic that checks common service, configuration and update-database conditions.
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, choose Run the troubleshooter, and allow it to apply any proposed repair.
- When it finishes, restart the Pavilion.
- Return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Microsoft also delivers an automated Windows Update troubleshooter through the Get Help app. Use that route if the Settings troubleshooter is missing or reports that it cannot complete. Write down the result rather than repeatedly running the same check without changing anything.
3. Reset a damaged Windows Update cache
A failed download or corrupted cache can make the same update fail repeatedly. This procedure removes the contents of the update download cache; it does not remove personal documents.

- Press Windows key + R, type
services.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Update in the Services list. Right-click it and select Stop. Leave the Services window open.
- In File Explorer, go to
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Delete the contents of
SoftwareDistribution, not the surroundingC:Windowsfolder and not unrelated folders. If a file is in use, confirm that the Windows Update service is stopped before trying again. - Return to Services, right-click Windows Update and select Start.
- Restart Windows and check for updates again.
The first check after a reset may take longer because Windows has to rebuild its download information. If the service will not stop or start, note the exact message and continue with system-file repair rather than deleting more folders.
4. Repair Windows system files
Corrupted protected files or an incorrect system configuration can prevent servicing. Run System File Checker from an elevated Command Prompt.
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click the result and choose Run as administrator. - At the prompt, enter
sfc /scannowand press Enter. - Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Do not close the window while the scan is running.
- Restart the Pavilion, then try Windows Update again.
SFC reports whether it found and repaired integrity violations, found problems it could not repair, or found no violations. Save the result. If the update database is still damaged, follow Microsoft’s additional Windows Update repair and servicing-stack steps for the exact Windows 10 build installed on the Pavilion; those procedures vary by release and should not be substituted with a package intended for another build.

5. Match drivers and BIOS to the exact Pavilion model
HP sells many Pavilion configurations with different chipsets, storage controllers, wireless adapters and graphics hardware. A driver that is correct for one Pavilion family can be wrong for another, so use the complete product number rather than only a marketing name such as “Pavilion 15.”
Find the complete product number
- Read the product label on the case or the original documentation.
- Open HP Support Assistant and view the detected product details.
- In Windows, open Settings > System > About and record the model information shown there.
Install model-specific packages
- On HP’s support site, select the exact Pavilion product number.
- Choose the installed Windows 10 version, not a similarly named edition or a different operating system.
- Review the available chipset, storage, network and graphics drivers. Install one package at a time, restart when requested, and retry Windows Update after the restart.
- Use HP Support Assistant if you prefer its automatic detection; HP says it can find and install software, driver and BIOS updates.
Keep a backup and a way to recover before changing a driver. If a new driver causes a regression, Device Manager may offer Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver when a previous package is available. Otherwise reinstall the exact HP package you recorded.
Review BIOS updates cautiously
A BIOS update can resolve firmware compatibility problems, but there is no universal BIOS version that is safe for every Pavilion. Use only the BIOS package listed for the full product number and installed Windows configuration. Connect AC power, close other applications and do not turn off the Pavilion, close the lid or remove power while the firmware process is running. If the package is for another Pavilion model, stop and find the correct one instead of guessing.

6. Decode the common error codes

If the code changes after a repair, treat the new code as the current symptom. Do not keep applying a fix meant for the previous code without checking the latest failure details.
7. Isolate third-party conflicts with a clean boot
When the update works after services or startup programs are reduced, a third-party utility—not Windows Update itself—may be interfering. A clean boot is a diagnostic state, not a permanent configuration.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
msconfigand press Enter. - On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services, then select Disable all. Hiding Microsoft services first prevents you from disabling core Windows services.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager. Disable nonessential startup items, then close Task Manager.
- Select OK in System Configuration and restart.
- Try Windows Update. If it succeeds, re-enable services and startup items in small groups, restarting between groups, until the conflict is identified.
- Return System Configuration to Normal startup when testing is complete.
Do not leave security software disabled permanently. During a short diagnostic test, disconnect from untrusted networks and restore protection immediately afterward.

Firmware work is the highest-risk option in this sequence because it requires the exact product number and uninterrupted power. Software-only repairs such as the troubleshooter, cache reset and SFC are easier to reverse. Use that difference to choose the next step, and keep a recovery path before every driver or BIOS change.
9. If Windows Update still fails
- Capture the exact code, Windows build, Pavilion product number and the step at which setup fails.
- Check HP’s exact product page for Windows 10 driver and firmware availability rather than downloading a package for a similar model.
- Review Microsoft’s remedy for the specific code and build, including servicing-stack guidance.
- If the laptop repeatedly rolls back, stop changing multiple variables at once. Restore the last known-good driver, confirm normal startup settings, and retry one controlled change.
- Consider whether the desired update is unavailable because Windows 10 support ended, rather than continuing to reset a healthy installation.
Keep the backup you made until the Pavilion has restarted normally and the update history shows a stable result. Reconnect peripherals and re-enable VPN or security settings one at a time so a new failure can be attributed to a specific change.
