Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf a horror game will not start, drops back to the Steam library, or crashes after reaching its menu, work through this order: update SteamOS and restart, close third-party Desktop Mode apps, check the game’s Steam Deck compatibility rating, test an official Proton version, lower demanding graphics settings, and move the installation from microSD to internal storage. This sequence follows Valve’s troubleshooting guidance and isolates the most common software, compatibility, rendering, and storage causes without making several changes at once.
The exact fix depends on where the failure occurs. A title that never opens points first to compatibility or Proton. A game that reaches a menu and then fails under load points toward rendering demand. Crashes that follow a game between installs can indicate a storage problem. Use the workflow below, retesting after each controlled change.

Start with a clean Steam Deck baseline
Do not begin by deleting files or switching through random Proton builds. Valve’s Steam Support guidance puts system updates, a restart, and removal of third-party software at the beginning because those steps establish whether the problem is transient or caused by the current environment.
- Install available SteamOS updates. Open the Steam menu and apply any pending system update. Allow the Deck to finish installing before launching the game again.
- Restart the Deck. Use Steam > Power > Restart, then wait for the Steam interface to return completely.
- Exit or disable third-party applications installed in Desktop Mode. Retest the horror game before changing compatibility tools or removing game data.
If the game launches after this baseline, the immediate cause was likely a temporary system state or an interaction with another application. Re-enable software one item at a time only if you need to identify an interaction.

Read the Steam Deck compatibility label before changing Proton
Open the game’s Steam Store page and find Steam Deck Compatibility. Valve uses three principal labels:
| Label | What Valve’s label means | What you should expect |
|---|---|---|
| Verified | The game works by default on Steam Deck. | Start with the default compatibility configuration. If it still fails, continue with the baseline, storage, and escalation steps rather than assuming the label guarantees every future build will work. |
| Playable | The game works, but manual configuration may be required. | Expect to test a Proton version, adjust settings, or accommodate a game-specific limitation. |
| Unsupported | Valve does not currently consider the title playable on Deck. | A workaround may exist, but a persistent launch failure is not necessarily a fault in your Deck. Treat compatibility as an open limitation rather than an ordinary settings error. |
Ratings can change as Steam Deck and Proton improvements ship, so check the current Store page instead of relying on an older screenshot or forum post. A title marked Playable is not broken merely because it needs a manual step; an Unsupported title may fail because a required feature is not available through the current compatibility setup.
Force an official Proton version when the default tool fails
Proton is the Steam Play compatibility tool used to run Windows games on Steam Deck. If the game is a Windows title, or if the default tool no longer launches it, Valve specifically recommends trying the latest Proton version.
Set a Proton version
- Highlight the game in your Library.
- Press the Menu button.
- Choose Properties, then open Compatibility.
- Enable Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
- Select the latest Proton version offered in the list and close the Properties window.
- Launch the game and observe the exact result: no window, an immediate return to the library, a menu crash, cutscene failure, controller problem, or a successful start.
Valve’s wording is direct: “Try choosing the latest version of Proton.” Use that as the first controlled test rather than jumping immediately to an unofficial build.
Compare another official version without losing your working configuration
If the latest Proton version fails, test another official Proton version available in the Compatibility list. Change only the Proton selection, launch the game, and record the result. Useful comparison points are:
- Whether the game reaches its main menu.
- Whether videos or cutscenes display and play correctly.
- Whether the built-in controls respond.
- Whether the crash returns during loading or gameplay.
- How often the failure occurs across repeated launches.
| Proton test | Use it when | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Latest Proton version | The default tool fails or the game has recently changed. | Launch result, menu access, cutscenes, controls, and crash point. |
| Another official Proton version | The latest version introduces a failure or does not improve the launch. | The same five observations, plus the exact Proton version selected. |
Keep the version that gives the most reliable result and note it so you can revert after a future game or SteamOS update. Do not describe one Proton release as a universal fix: compatibility varies by title and can change with updates.

Important warning about forcing Proton
Valve warns that forcing Proton can install the Windows version of a game when only a Linux version was installed previously. That can change which files are downloaded and may require additional storage. If the title offers a native Linux build and your forced configuration produces an unexpected installation, return to the Compatibility setting and retest the default option.
If the game reaches a menu, reduce rendering load
A launch that succeeds but crashes when a scene becomes demanding is a different symptom from an immediate return to the library. Valve’s general remedy for application stability and performance problems is to reduce graphics settings.
Lower settings in a controlled order
- Open the game’s graphics or video settings from its main menu.
- Change the overall graphics preset to a lower level.
- If the crash persists, lower individual demanding options available in the game.
- Apply the changes, restart the game, and repeat the same section or loading sequence that previously failed.
Change one group of settings at a time when possible. That lets you identify whether the lower load prevents the crash instead of creating an untraceable collection of changes. If the game never reaches a menu, graphics settings are not the first branch to pursue; return to compatibility and Proton testing.
Isolate the storage location: internal SSD versus microSD
Storage is a diagnostic variable, not merely an installation preference. If the horror game is installed on a microSD card, move or reinstall it on the Deck’s internal storage and repeat the same launch test. iFixit’s Steam Deck crashing guide says, “You may experience increased stability moving games stored on a micro SD to the internal storage.”
Use an internal-storage test
- Confirm whether the game is installed on the microSD card or internal storage in your Library’s installation or storage management controls.
- Move the game to internal storage, or uninstall and reinstall it there if a move is not available.
- Launch it repeatedly under the same Proton and graphics settings you used for the microSD test.
- Compare whether the crash occurs at the same point and with the same frequency.
A clear improvement after moving the game does not prove that every microSD card is defective. It narrows the fault to the original card, its data, or the Deck’s storage path. iFixit notes that when crashing games share a storage location, the pattern “might point to either the microSD card or internal storage as a potential fault.” Test more than one affected title before drawing a broader hardware conclusion.

| Internal storage | Provides a comparison that avoids the microSD card and its interface. | If the game becomes stable, investigate the card or the external storage path. |

Replacing or preparing a microSD card
Valve states: “Any UHS-I (class 3 or better) microSD card is supported.” Choose a card meeting that specification if you replace the existing one. Before installing games on a new card, format it through the Deck:

Steam > Settings > System > Format SD card
Formatting erases the card. Back up anything you need first, then let Steam complete the format before downloading the game. A supported card can help isolate a storage fault, but it cannot make an Unsupported game compatible with Proton or supply a feature the title requires.
Check online and offline requirements
Valve says that once a game is installed, it can generally be played offline unless the title requires an internet connection. Offline mode is therefore not a universal crash fix.
Run one test while connected to the internet if the game uses a launcher, a digital-rights check, or multiplayer services. A connection may be required for that title’s authentication or online features. If the game is designed to work offline and the same crash occurs online and offline, connectivity is unlikely to be the primary cause.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Fails only when offline: investigate the game’s launcher, authentication, or multiplayer requirement.
- Fails both online and offline: continue with compatibility, graphics, and storage isolation.
- Launches online but not offline: keep the title online when required and document that condition for support.
When a game worked before an update
A previously working horror game can change behavior after a SteamOS, Proton, or game update. Start by repeating the clean baseline rather than assuming your hardware changed: install current SteamOS updates, restart, close third-party Desktop Mode applications, and check the game’s current compatibility label. Ratings themselves can change as Deck and Proton improvements ship.
Next, compare the default compatibility tool with the latest Proton version and, if needed, another official version. Record the game build shown by Steam and the Proton version for each test. If the game now reaches a menu but crashes under load, lower the graphics settings. If it is installed on microSD, repeat the internal-storage test so a coincidental storage problem is not mistaken for an update regression.
Do not claim that a particular Proton release fixes every game. The useful result is a reproducible combination of game build, SteamOS version, Proton version, settings, and storage location.

Keep a controlled troubleshooting log
Write down each test before making the next change. A short log prevents you from forgetting which combination worked and makes a support request actionable. Record the date, SteamOS version, game build, compatibility label, Proton selection, storage location, graphics changes, online or offline state, and the exact failure point.

Use the same save, level, cutscene, or loading sequence for each comparison when possible. For example, test the default Proton tool on internal storage, then test the latest Proton tool without changing storage or graphics. After that, restore the original tool and move the installation to microSD. This isolates one variable at a time and distinguishes a repeatable fix from a one-time successful launch.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Avoid common troubleshooting mistakes
- Changing several variables at once: switching Proton, moving storage, and lowering settings together hides which change mattered.
- Treating Verified as a permanent guarantee: ratings and game builds can change, so recheck the current Store page after updates.
- Assuming Playable means broken: Valve’s label allows for manual configuration.
- Forcing Proton without noting the original setup: the Deck may download a Windows version instead of the previously installed Linux version.
- Formatting a card without a backup: formatting through Steam erases the microSD card.
- Buying a card as a compatibility fix: a UHS-I Class 3 or better card can test storage reliability, but it cannot add unsupported Proton features.
- Using offline mode as a universal remedy: launchers, DRM checks, and multiplayer requirements may need an internet connection.
Escalate with a reproducible report
If the documented steps do not resolve the crash, contact Steam Support and the game’s developer with evidence rather than a general statement that the title is broken. Valve’s troubleshooting guide directs users to Steam Support when these measures do not solve the problem.
Include:
- Deck model: LCD or OLED.
- SteamOS version.
- Game name and current game build.
- Steam Deck compatibility rating shown on the Store page.
- Proton version tested, including whether the default tool was used.
- Storage location: internal storage or microSD.
- Whether the game was tested online and offline.
- The exact failure point: before any window, during loading, at the menu, during a cutscene, or during gameplay.
- Graphics settings changed and whether lowering them altered the behavior.
- Whether the same title works after moving it between storage locations.
This information separates a title-specific compatibility problem from a broader Deck, storage, or software issue and gives both support teams a repeatable scenario to investigate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why won’t my horror game launch on Steam Deck?
Start with SteamOS updates, a restart, and disabling third-party Desktop Mode applications. Then check the game’s Verified, Playable, or Unsupported label and test the latest Proton version from Library > Properties > Compatibility. If it is installed on microSD, compare it with an internal-storage installation.
Should I use Proton Experimental?
Valve’s documented first Proton test is the latest Proton version offered in the Compatibility list. Try that official version first, then compare another official version if needed. Record which version launches reliably instead of assuming any single release works for every title.

Can an SD card cause a Steam Deck game to crash?
It can be a factor. Move the game to internal storage and repeat the same test. If stability improves, the card, its data, or the storage path becomes a credible suspect. Valve supports UHS-I Class 3 or better cards; format a replacement through Steam > Settings > System > Format SD card.
What if the game worked before an update?
Repeat the clean baseline, check the current compatibility rating, and compare the default tool with the latest and another official Proton version. Record the game build and SteamOS version. Also test lower graphics settings and internal storage so an unrelated rendering or storage issue is not mistaken for an update regression.
Why does the game launch and then crash during a scene?
Lower the overall graphics preset and then individual demanding settings. Restart and repeat the same loading sequence or scene. If the title never reaches a menu, prioritize compatibility and Proton tests instead of graphics changes.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Does offline mode fix launch crashes?
No. Installed games generally work offline unless they require an internet connection. Test online once if a launcher, DRM check, or multiplayer service may be involved, but continue compatibility, graphics, and storage troubleshooting if the same failure occurs online and offline.
The Bottom Line
Use a controlled sequence: update SteamOS, restart, close third-party Desktop Mode apps, check the current compatibility label, test the latest official Proton version, lower graphics settings when the crash occurs under load, and compare microSD with internal storage. Choose a UHS-I Class 3 or better card only when storage testing points that way, and format it through Steam before use. If the problem remains, send Steam Support and the developer a reproducible report containing your Deck model, versions, Proton choice, storage location, connectivity state, and exact crash point.
