How to Fix Home Wi‑Fi After a Power Outage or Flood

The safe solution depends on one question: did water reach any electrical or networking equipment? If the router, modem, power adapter, outlet, wiring, or service equipment became wet, stop troubleshooting and keep it out of service until the electrical system and equipment have been assessed. If every device stayed dry and the home’s power is safe, restore service in sequence: verify power, restart the modem, wait for its connection, then restart the router.

This guide separates those two situations so you can recover connectivity without turning a network problem into an electrical injury or further equipment damage.

Can I use my router after it got wet in a flood?

No—not merely because it looks dry later. The CDC’s National Center for Environmental Health states, “Never use a wet electrical device.” Its electrical-hazard guidance also says, “All electrical equipment and appliances must be completely dry before returning them to service.” Drying the outside does not prove that water has left internal components, connectors, power supplies, or wiring.

Treat a wet network as an electrical-safety incident, not a normal Wi‑Fi fault. A router, modem, mesh node, power brick, surge protector, wall outlet, telephone or coaxial jack, and the wiring serving them can all be affected. Floodwater may also leave contamination or corrosion that is not visible when the water recedes.

If there is standing water

  • Do not touch the router, modem, cables, outlets, plugs, or other electrical equipment while standing in water.
  • Do not reach for a breaker, fuse box, service disconnect, or power strip from a wet area.
  • Keep household members away from the affected room and follow instructions from the utility or emergency authorities.
  • Arrange an inspection by a qualified electrician before restoring power to water-affected circuits.

If equipment was submerged or splashed

Leave it disconnected. Do not plug it in “just to test it,” open the enclosure, use a hair dryer, or rely on a short period of air-drying. Tell the electrician exactly which devices and outlets were wet. The professional can determine whether the circuit is safe and whether equipment can be evaluated, repaired, or must be discarded. Restoring internet service does not establish that the home’s electrical system is safe.

How do I fix my Wi‑Fi after a power outage?

Use this order only when the electrical system is dry, power has been declared safe, and the modem and router themselves were not exposed to water. The sequence matters because a router cannot obtain internet service until the modem or gateway has completed its connection.

1. Confirm that power is actually available

  • Check whether lights and other outlets in the room work. If the outage is wider, look for utility updates rather than repeatedly cycling network equipment.
  • Confirm that the modem, router, and any separate fiber, cable, or DSL power unit are plugged into a known-good, dry outlet.
  • Inspect cords and adapters for cuts, melted plastic, bent pins, unusual odor, or heat. Do not use a visibly damaged adapter.
  • Use the equipment’s own guide to interpret indicator lights. Light colors and blinking patterns differ by model, so a generic “red means this” chart can misdiagnose the problem.

If a breaker has tripped after a flood or the outlet shows evidence of water, stop here and use the electrician pathway instead of resetting it yourself.

  1. Disconnect the modem’s power cable.
  2. Disconnect the Ethernet cable from the modem if one is attached to a separate router. Leave any service-line connection in place unless the modem’s manual says otherwise.
  3. Wait two to three minutes. This is a support procedure, not a guaranteed outage duration.
  4. Reconnect the modem’s Ethernet cable and then its power cable.
  5. Wait for the modem to finish starting. Do not move to the router step until the modem’s Internet or online indicator becomes solid, or the model’s guide confirms that it is online.

If you use an all-in-one gateway, there may be no separate modem and router to restart. Follow the gateway’s manual; do not unplug random cables from a fiber terminal or telephone service box.

3. Restart the router after the modem is online

Once the modem has re-established service, disconnect power from the router, wait briefly for it to shut down, and reconnect it. Manufacturer guidance indexed in an FCC report describes reconnecting modem power first, waiting until the modem’s online indicator stops blinking, and then reconnecting the router. The exact waiting period and indicator names vary by model.

  1. Keep the modem powered and online.
  2. Unplug the router’s power adapter.
  3. Reconnect the adapter and allow the router to complete startup.
  4. Wait for the router’s Wi‑Fi indicator or management page to show that wireless service is available.
  5. Reconnect one client device and test a normal website. Test a second device if the first still reports a connection problem.

A restart is not the same as a factory reset. A restart preserves your network name, password, ISP settings, and other configuration.

4. Check for an ISP outage or modem-side fault

If the modem never reaches its normal online state, or it repeatedly returns to an offline or blinking state, contact your internet service provider. Ask whether there is an area outage, maintenance, signal problem, account issue, or a fault with the provider-supplied modem or line. Google specifically recommends contacting the ISP when modem trouble continues after a restart.

Have the modem’s model, serial number, account details, and the time the outage began available. Tell the provider whether the failure affects wired Ethernet as well as Wi‑Fi; that distinction helps separate an internet-service problem from a wireless problem.

5. Use model-specific router support

If the ISP confirms that service is reaching the modem but Wi‑Fi remains unavailable, consult the router manufacturer’s guide for that exact model and hardware revision. Check the documented power-up sequence, status-light meanings, firmware recovery process, and supported reset procedure.

A factory reset should not be an early generic fix. It can erase the wireless name and password, parental controls, port-forwarding rules, custom DNS, VLAN settings, and ISP authentication details. Use it only when the manufacturer’s instructions or support staff identify it as the appropriate next step and you have recorded the settings needed to configure the router again.

No lights on the modem or router Verify a dry, working outlet and the correct adapter. If the outlet, cord, or equipment was wet or damaged, stop and obtain an electrical inspection.
Modem lights never reach the normal online state Repeat the modem restart once, then ask the ISP about an area outage, line fault, or modem issue.
Modem is online but router has no Wi‑Fi Restart the router after the modem is stable; then follow the exact router manual.
Wi‑Fi name appears, but every device says “no internet” Check whether the modem is online and whether a wired device can reach the internet. If both fail, involve the ISP; if wired service works, troubleshoot the router’s wireless or DNS settings.
Only one phone, laptop, or television fails Forget and rejoin the network on that device, check its Wi‑Fi setting, and test another client before changing router settings.
Connection works briefly, then drops Check for a recurring power problem, overheating, damaged adapters, or an ISP fault. Do not place a possibly wet device back into service.
Router was reset accidentally Use the manufacturer’s setup process and ISP-specific credentials. Do not assume the default network name or password is the same as before.

How to separate a Wi‑Fi problem from an internet-service problem

Home connectivity usually has several links: the utility supply, the modem or optical terminal, the router, the wireless radio, and each client device. A failure at one link can make another look guilty.

Test the modem or gateway state

The modem’s online indicator is more informative than a phone’s Wi‑Fi icon. A phone can remain connected to the local wireless network even when the modem has no connection to the ISP. Conversely, a modem can be online while a router’s wireless radio is disabled or misconfigured.

Use a wired comparison when safe

If the equipment stayed dry and you have a suitable Ethernet device, connect it directly to the router and test internet access. A working wired connection with failed Wi‑Fi points toward the router’s wireless settings or radio. No wired connection and an offline modem point toward the modem, service line, or ISP. Disconnect the test cable when finished and keep all equipment in a dry, ventilated location.

Check the gateway arrangement

Some homes have a separate modem and router; others have a single ISP gateway that performs both jobs. A fiber installation may also include an optical network terminal or other service box. Identify which device receives the provider’s line before unplugging anything. ISP compatibility and restart instructions differ between these arrangements.

What should I do if a flood reached the outlet or wiring but not the router?

Do not assume the router is safe because it sits on a shelf above the water. A wet outlet, power strip, cable entry, wall cavity, breaker, or service component can energize or damage equipment later. Keep the network disconnected until a qualified electrician or the utility confirms that affected circuits and equipment are safe to energize.

When the inspection is complete, ask what was tested and what remains out of service. A restored breaker or working light is not proof that every outlet, cable, or network device has passed inspection. Follow the professional’s instructions for replacing receptacles, adapters, surge protectors, and other components.

When does replacing the router make sense?

Replacement is conditional, not the default response to a temporary outage. Consider a new router when an inspection or manufacturer support confirms damage, when the device cannot be returned to safe service, or when it no longer receives security updates and cannot meet current security requirements.

Situation Practical decision
Router or power adapter was wet, submerged, or visibly damaged Do not reuse it based on appearance. Obtain professional guidance on disposition and replace it if it is not cleared for service.
Router stayed dry and works after the correct restart Keep it; an outage alone does not justify replacement.
Router supports only WPA or WEP after available software updates Consider a newer model. The FTC advises using WPA3 or WPA2 and considering replacement when a router remains limited to older security after updates.
Router has current support and firmware but one outage caused a temporary failure Investigate power, modem, ISP, and configuration causes before buying hardware.
ISP supplies a gateway or requires approved equipment Check compatibility and activation requirements before purchasing a separate router or modem.

Security features to verify

  • Support for WPA3, or at least WPA2 when WPA3 is not available for your devices.
  • Firmware updates from the manufacturer and a stated support path for the model.
  • Ability to disable obsolete WEP and other legacy modes rather than leaving them as the only option.
  • A changeable administrator password and a documented process for updating it.

Security capability does not override flood safety. A router with excellent encryption is still unsafe to use if water affected its electronics or the circuit feeding it.

Compatibility questions to ask the ISP

  • Does the provider permit customer-owned routers, and does it require a separate modem, optical terminal, or gateway?
  • Which connection type and authentication settings must the router support?
  • Will the provider activate the replacement, and are there approved hardware lists or firmware requirements?
  • Can the existing gateway be placed in bridge mode, or should it remain the router?

There is no single router that is guaranteed to work with every ISP or service type. Confirm those details before buying.

A safe recovery checklist

  1. Identify whether water touched any electrical, networking, or service equipment.
  2. If anything was wet, keep it disconnected, avoid standing water and breakers, and arrange qualified electrical or utility inspection.
  3. If everything stayed dry and power is safe, verify the outlet, adapters, and equipment connections.
  4. Restart the modem: disconnect power and Ethernet, wait two to three minutes, reconnect, and wait for the online indicator.
  5. Restart the router only after the modem is online.
  6. Test more than one device and, when appropriate, compare Wi‑Fi with a wired connection.
  7. Contact the ISP if the modem remains offline or the provider confirms a local outage or service fault.
  8. Use the exact router manual for model-specific troubleshooting; reserve a factory reset for a documented need.
  9. Replace equipment only when damage, obsolete security, or confirmed incompatibility justifies it.

What not to do after an outage or flood

  • Do not power a wet router, modem, adapter, outlet, or surge protector to see whether it still works.
  • Do not stand in water while reaching for a plug, breaker, or service disconnect.
  • Do not interpret one universal light-color chart as a diagnosis for every model.
  • Do not restart the router repeatedly while the modem is still offline; that obscures the actual fault and cannot restore an ISP connection.
  • Do not factory-reset a working configuration before checking the modem, ISP status, and model guide.
  • Do not treat a restored Wi‑Fi signal as proof that flood-damaged wiring or equipment is safe.

What information to have ready when you call for help

Efficient support depends on precise facts. Record the modem and router model numbers, whether they are separate or combined, which indicators are lit or blinking, whether any device was wet, whether wired service works, and whether neighbors or the provider report an outage. Note the time power returned and the steps already completed. If the ISP supplied the equipment, identify its account or service number without sharing passwords publicly.
