If a Mac menu bar monitor seems to be driving high CPU usage or battery drain, confirm the process is responsible before changing settings: compare Activity Monitor readings with the monitor running and quit. If the difference is clear, update the app and macOS, reduce optional monitoring work, and repeat the comparison. The exact settings and any known bug depend on the monitor and macOS version.
Confirm whether the menu bar monitor is responsible
A busy CPU reading at one moment does not prove that a menu bar app is the cause. Use Activity Monitor to identify the process and watch its activity over time, then compare with the app quit under similar conditions.

- Open Activity Monitor from Applications > Utilities, or find it with Spotlight.
- Select the CPU tab and observe the suspected monitor’s process while the Mac is otherwise idle. Apple explains that this view reports System, User, and Idle CPU activity. See the Activity Monitor User Guide.
- Quit the monitor from its own menu if possible, then check Activity Monitor again. If it remains open, select its process and click the stop button in the toolbar; choose Quit, or Force Quit if it is unresponsive.
- Compare the readings after quitting with the earlier observation. Keep other conditions as similar as practical, since other apps and background activity can change CPU use.
Apple describes Activity Monitor as a way to locate and force quit a troublesome app or process, and to see which apps or processes use the most energy (Apple Support).

Check energy use as well as CPU
CPU activity and battery impact are related, but they are not the same measurement. On supported macOS versions, open the battery status menu and look for apps using significant energy. Selecting an app there may take you to it in Activity Monitor; the exact menu wording can vary by macOS release.

Apple notes that the battery menu’s energy assessment reflects factors including CPU, disk activity, and networking—not CPU alone. A monitor process that does not show unusually high CPU may still contribute to energy use through other activity. Conversely, a short CPU spike does not by itself explain persistent battery drain. See Apple’s Energy Efficiency Guide for Mac Apps.
Reduce the monitor’s background work and retest
There is no universal setting or fix for every Mac menu bar monitor. Check the app’s own documentation and preferences for controls that may reduce how often it works:
- Increase the polling or refresh interval, if the app offers one.
- Disable sensor modules or metrics you do not use.
- Turn off frequent history logging or refreshes if those options are available.
These are troubleshooting possibilities, not settings every app provides. Update the monitor and macOS, restart if an update requires it, and repeat the same before-and-after comparison. If high CPU usage returns only when the monitor is running, quit it again while you investigate rather than assuming one setting will fix the issue.

Collect evidence if the problem continues
Give the app developer or Apple Support details that can help reproduce the problem instead of reporting only that the Mac feels hot or loses charge quickly.
- Record the monitor’s name and version, macOS version, and Mac model or chip.
- Note what you were doing, whether the Mac was idle, and the steps that reliably trigger the high CPU usage or battery drain.
- In Activity Monitor, select the process and use the toolbar’s more-options menu to create a process sample or system diagnostics report. Apple says a Sample Process report takes 3 seconds; that duration is for the report, not a measure of the problem’s severity. Instructions are in the Activity Monitor User Guide.
Diagnostic reports may contain private information. Review them before sharing, especially in a public forum.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Investigate battery condition separately if drain remains
If quitting the monitor lowers CPU activity but battery life remains poor, look for other energy-intensive apps and assess battery condition separately. A replacement battery will not resolve a process that is consuming high CPU. Consider battery service only when independent battery evidence or Apple’s battery diagnostics indicate a hardware problem.

What the available evidence can—and cannot—establish
Apple’s guidance explains how to inspect CPU and energy use, quit processes, and generate diagnostic reports. It does not establish a universal CPU threshold at which a monitor is defective, a prevalence rate for this problem, or a confirmed bug in any particular third-party utility. Since the monitor and macOS release are not specified here, app-specific reset, removal, login-item, and compatibility steps cannot be stated reliably.
