How to Fix High CPU and Memory Usage in Large VS Code Workspaces

Find what is making a large VS Code workspace slow, then reduce file discovery, watching, search, or language-analysis work without disabling more than necessary.

High CPU or memory use in a large Visual Studio Code workspace can come from several different jobs: discovering files when a folder opens, watching directories for changes, indexing or analyzing source code, an extension, or remote file polling. Find when the spike happens, then adjust only the setting or scope tied to that work. VS Code does not identify one universal cause, and its documentation does not set a single size or memory threshold for a “large” workspace.

First, identify when VS Code slows down

Match the resource spike to what VS Code is doing before changing settings. A folder that is slow mainly while opening points toward file discovery; lag while typing or waiting for IntelliSense points toward language analysis or an extension; sustained activity during file changes can involve watching. If the problem appears only in a remote or WSL window, investigate that environment separately.

  • During folder opening: VS Code says discovering project files in a folder with many files can use substantial CPU and make the editor slow to respond. VS Code FAQ
  • While typing or waiting for IntelliSense: inspect the language service’s project scope and any related extension activity.
  • During ongoing file changes: check which directories VS Code is watching, especially large generated or dependency trees.
  • Only in a remote or WSL window: check remote-specific file-watcher behavior rather than applying local-machine advice by default.

This is a troubleshooting sequence based on distinct documented workloads, not a built-in VS Code diagnosis report.

Choose the exclusion that matches the work

VS Code has different controls for what appears in Explorer, what text search scans, what the file watcher observes, and what a language service analyzes. They are not interchangeable: hiding a directory or excluding it from search does not by itself mean it is excluded from file watching or language analysis.

Setting or control Work it reduces Possible effect
files.watcherExclude File watching in matching directories VS Code may not notice changes in excluded paths through its watcher; see VS Code’s Linux setup guidance.
files.exclude Explorer visibility and, according to the settings documentation, text search Excluded paths become less visible or discoverable in those editor views; see User and workspace settings.
search.exclude Text search Search results omit matching paths; it is not a watcher exclusion. See User and workspace settings.
Language-project exclusion Language-service project analysis Files outside the analyzed project may not receive the same language features; see JavaScript project configuration.

Settings can be user-wide or workspace-specific. Workspace settings are stored in the workspace’s .vscode directory, so check the effective scope before editing; otherwise you may change behavior in more projects than intended. The settings documentation explains setting scopes.

Exclude only paths that are genuinely unnecessary

Common candidates to review include node_modules, build output such as dist, caches, and large data directories. Their suitability depends on the project: ignoring a path can interfere with expected file discovery, search, change detection, or language features. VS Code’s JavaScript guidance recommends excluding dependencies and generated output that are not source in the language-project context; it does not make one exclusion appropriate for every setting or project. See jsconfig.json.

If Linux reports ENOSPC, address watcher pressure

The warning “Visual Studio Code is unable to watch for file changes in this large workspace” (error ENOSPC) means the Linux file watcher is running out of file handles. It is a watcher-limit problem, not a generic message that the computer has run out of memory. The Linux guidance recommends excluding unnecessary large directories first, such as a Python .venv, using files.watcherExclude. Other running applications can also consume file handles. See Installing Visual Studio Code on Linux.

Inspect the limit before changing it

  1. In a Linux terminal, run cat /proc/sys/fs/inotify/max_user_watches to see the current inotify watch limit.
  2. Review and exclude directories VS Code does not need to watch, then check whether the notification or slowdown remains.
  3. If watch pressure still warrants a platform change, consult the Linux setup page for the instructions and distribution-specific caveats before changing fs.inotify.max_user_watches. The documented value 524288 is a possible configuration, not a universal requirement.

Each Linux file watch uses an estimated 1,080 bytes. If all 524,288 watches are consumed, their memory use has an upper bound of about 540 MiB, according to Microsoft’s Linux setup documentation. This is a conditional estimate for watches, not a measurement of total VS Code memory use; the same guidance notes that memory-constrained systems may need a lower limit.

Reduce language-service work in oversized projects

For very large workspaces, VS Code may partially disable IntelliSense features for performance reasons. Its IntelliSense guidance suggests excluding large folders such as node_modules or build output using files.exclude or search.exclude. For JavaScript and TypeScript project analysis, use the language project’s exclude configuration for files that are not part of the source project, such as generated output. These controls target different work: editor visibility/search versus language-service analysis. See IntelliSense and jsconfig.json.

Test extensions instead of assuming they are at fault

VS Code uses safeguards and lazy activation to limit unnecessary extension impact on startup, interface operations, CPU, and memory. That does not rule out an extension in a particular project, nor does it establish that extensions are the usual cause. If the spike aligns with a language extension or extension-host activity, isolate the workspace and extension condition using VS Code’s extension troubleshooting guidance; avoid treating an unsupported blacklist as a diagnosis. See Extension Host.

Use remote watcher settings only for remote cases

Polling-based file watching can affect performance in large remote workspaces. For large WSL workspaces, VS Code’s remote troubleshooting guidance suggests increasing remote.WSL.fileWatcher.pollingInterval and controlling watched directories with files.watcherExclude. These are remote/WSL-specific options, not a general fix for local Windows, macOS, or Linux projects. See Remote Development Tips and Tricks.

Retest after each change

  1. Change one relevant setting or project exclusion at a time, at the narrowest practical scope.
  2. Reopen the same workspace or repeat the action that triggered the spike, such as opening the folder, waiting for IntelliSense, or changing files.
  3. Check whether the original symptom improved and whether the exclusion removed functionality you still need, such as search results, change notifications, or language features.
  4. If there is no improvement, revert the unrelated exclusion and investigate the next workload indicated by when the slowdown occurs.
