Error 2: 1073741819 in Heroes of the Storm is usually a launch-time software conflict. Blizzard’s support guidance specifically identifies Razer Synapse when it is running, while support cases also implicate overlays, antivirus, firewalls, banking-security software, permissions, and outdated drivers. Close suspected background software first, then repair the game and test security exceptions before considering a reinstall.
What Error 2: 1073741819 means
The code appears when Heroes of the Storm cannot complete its startup sequence. It is best treated as an interference symptom, not proof that your graphics card, Windows installation, or game files are permanently damaged. The same numeric code can be produced by different blockers, so there is no single fix that works for every computer.

Blizzard Support has documented one especially specific conflict: Razer Synapse running while Heroes launches. Its quoted guidance says, “This error is caused by a conflict between Heroes of the Storm and Razer Synapse software. It only occurs if you launch Heroes of the Storm while Razer Synapse is running.” The recommended test is to close Synapse from the system tray and launch the game again. If that does not stop the error, other background software must be isolated.
Use this order of operations
The sequence below prioritizes changes that are reversible and provide useful diagnostic information. Do not jump straight to reinstalling the game: a reinstall will not remove an overlay, security product, startup entry, or driver conflict.

| Stage | What you change | Reversibility | Diagnostic value |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Exit overlays and hardware utilities | Immediate; close and reopen | High when the game launches afterward |
| 2 | Disable a utility’s automatic startup | Easy to restore in startup settings | High; confirms a relaunching process |
| 3 | Pause or create an exception in security software | Re-enable immediately after testing | High for silent blocking |
| 4 | Scan and Repair, administrator test, and settings reset | Low risk | Moderate; separates client or configuration faults |
| 5 | Update Windows and graphics drivers | Usually reversible through driver recovery | Moderate for compatibility failures |
| 6 | Reinstall Battle.net and Heroes | Time-consuming | Low if a background conflict remains |
| 7 | Submit diagnostic files to Blizzard | No system change | Highest when the cause is not obvious |
1. Close Razer Synapse, overlays, and hardware utilities
Start with the processes most likely to inject an overlay, monitor hardware, or hook into a game. Razer Synapse is the conflict named in Blizzard’s support statement. Discord and Twitch-style overlays, RGB or peripheral utilities, capture tools, and similar programs can create the same type of launch interference in individual cases.
- Save any work in open applications.
- In the Windows notification area, select the up-arrow to show hidden tray icons.
- Right-click Razer Synapse and choose its exit or quit command. Close other overlay and hardware-management utilities in the same way.
- Open Task Manager with
Ctrl+Shift+Esc. On the Processes tab, look for the utility you just closed and related helper processes. - Select a remaining process and choose End task only when you are certain it belongs to the utility you are testing. Do not terminate Windows system processes at random.
- Launch Battle.net and start Heroes of the Storm.
If the game starts normally, you have identified a conflict rather than repaired the game itself. Reopen utilities one at a time after playing, testing after each change. The first program that brings the error back is the most useful suspect. Keep the conflicting program closed while playing, update it if an update is available, or contact its vendor for a compatibility fix.
2. Stop a conflicting program from relaunching with Windows
Closing a tray icon may work only until the next reboot or until Battle.net starts. If Heroes launches after you exit a utility, prevent that utility from silently returning.
- Open Task Manager and select the Startup apps tab.
- Find the utility that prevented the game from launching. Check the Publisher column so you do not disable an unrelated entry with a similar name.
- Right-click the confirmed entry and select Disable.
- Restart Windows. A reboot matters because it tests the same clean startup state you will use later, rather than relying on a manually closed process.
- After signing in, confirm the utility is absent in Task Manager, then launch Heroes.
To undo the test, return to Startup apps, right-click the entry, and select Enable. Uninstall the utility only when it immediately relaunches despite being closed or disabled. If you uninstall a Razer product for testing, restart before trying the game so its services and drivers are no longer loaded.

3. Test antivirus, firewall, and banking-security protection
Security software can block a game without displaying a clear warning. An affected Heroes player reported antivirus as the cause, and IBM Security Trusteer is one documented example of a banking-security component that can interfere with launch. Endpoint protection on a work or school computer may also apply policies you cannot change yourself.
Perform a controlled test
- Identify every security product protecting the computer, including Windows Security, third-party antivirus, endpoint agents, firewalls, and banking-protection browser or system components.
- Use that product’s own documented controls to pause real-time protection or its application-blocking feature briefly. Do not remove the security product merely to test it.
- With protection paused, launch Heroes once. If the game starts, close it immediately and restore protection.
- Add the Blizzard app and the Heroes of the Storm executable to the product’s allowed or exception list, following the security vendor’s instructions. Use the actual installation paths shown by your Battle.net client rather than guessing filenames.
- Re-enable antivirus, firewall, endpoint, and banking protection, then restart Windows and test again with the exception in place.
Never leave protection disabled while browsing, downloading, or playing online. A successful launch during a short, supervised test is evidence of a blocking rule; it is not a reason to run permanently without security software. If the computer is managed by an employer or school, ask its administrator to approve the exception instead of changing policy yourself.
4. Repair the installation and test permissions
Once background conflicts have been isolated, use Battle.net’s built-in repair tools. This is faster and less disruptive than deleting the game.
Run Scan and Repair
- Open the Battle.net desktop app.
- Select Heroes of the Storm in your games list.
- Open the gear or options menu beside the Play button.
- Choose Scan and Repair, then select Begin Scan.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not launch the game or shut down Windows while files are being replaced.
- Restart Battle.net and test Heroes before changing another setting.
Try an administrator launch
Right-click the Battle.net shortcut, choose Run as administrator, approve the Windows prompt, and start Heroes. This is a diagnostic test for permissions; it should not be your first choice for permanently running every application with elevated rights. If the game works only with administrator privileges, inspect the game folder’s security permissions and any controlled-folder-access rule instead of accepting elevation as the final solution.

- Advanced LIGHTSPEED wireless gaming mouse for super-fast 1 ms response time and faster than wired performance
- Ultra-long battery life gives you up to 250 hours of continuous gaming on a single AA battery

Reset in-game settings when offered
If the Battle.net options menu provides a reset-settings command, use it after recording custom graphics, audio, and control preferences. A corrupted configuration can prevent startup even when the installed game files pass a scan. Test with default settings before restoring your custom profile.
5. Update Windows and graphics drivers
Install current Windows updates and the latest graphics driver supplied for your graphics hardware. Driver and operating-system compatibility can cause persistent crashes that look like a game-file problem.
- Open Settings → Windows Update and install available updates. Restart when Windows requests it.
- Install the graphics driver for your specific GPU model from its manufacturer’s official support channel. Choose a clean-install option when the installer provides one.
- Restart after the driver installation, even if the installer does not require it.
- Launch Heroes with overlays and nonessential utilities still closed, so the driver test does not introduce another variable.
A Blizzard support case reports that a clean graphics-driver installation resolved persistent crashes, but that result is system-specific and is not a guaranteed cure for Error 2: 1073741819. If a new driver makes the problem worse, use Windows’ driver rollback option or reinstall the previous known-working package supplied by the manufacturer.

6. Reinstall only after the conflict tests fail
Reinstallation is a last resort because it takes the most time and cannot correct software that continues running outside the game directory. Use it after closing or uninstalling suspected utilities, testing security exceptions, repairing files, checking permissions, and updating Windows and graphics drivers.

- Restart Windows so locked files and services are released.
- Install the current Battle.net app and Heroes again using the normal installation location.
- Before launching, keep overlays and hardware utilities closed and confirm security protection is enabled with the appropriate exceptions.
- Start the game and note whether the error appears before restoring optional utilities.
Individual support cases report improvement after reinstalling, but those cases do not establish that reinstallation is a universal fix. If the error returns on a clean install, continuing to reinstall is unlikely to reveal the cause.
7. Escalate with useful diagnostics
If Error 2: 1073741819 remains after a clean conflict test, security review, repair, permissions check, and updates, open a Blizzard support ticket. The code alone is not enough to identify the blocker.
Collect these files
- DxDiag: Press
Windows+R, enterdxdiag, choose Save All Information, and keep the resulting text file. - MSInfo: Press
Windows+R, entermsinfo32, select File → Export, and save the report. - Heroes game logs: Locate the current Heroes log files using Blizzard’s support instructions and preserve the files from the failed launch.
In the ticket, state when the error began, whether it followed a Windows, driver, or game update, which background programs were running, whether the game launched with those programs closed, and whether a security exception changed the result. Include the exact troubleshooting steps already completed. This prevents support from sending you back through tests that have already produced a clear result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to choose the next test when you do not use Razer Synapse
Not having Razer Synapse does not rule out a software conflict. Work through the alternatives in the order below, changing one category at a time.

| What is present on the PC | First test | What a successful test tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Discord, Twitch-style, recording, or FPS overlays | Disable each overlay and exit its helper processes | An injected overlay or capture hook is blocking startup |
| Third-party antivirus or endpoint protection | Pause protection briefly, then create a documented exception | A security rule is denying a game or Blizzard component |
| Banking-security software such as IBM Security Trusteer | Use its application-control setting or vendor-approved exception | The banking module is treating the game process as unsafe |
| Outdated Windows or GPU driver | Install current updates and perform a clean driver installation | The failure is related to platform compatibility |
| No obvious third-party software | Scan and Repair, administrator test, then collect diagnostics | The cause needs file, permission, or system-level analysis |
Do not change every category at once. If you close five programs, reinstall drivers, and disable protection simultaneously, a successful launch will not tell you which change mattered. A one-variable test gives you a fix you can safely keep.
Common mistakes that waste time
- Assuming the number identifies one cause: The code is shared by multiple launch conflicts, so test the environment as well as the game files.
- Checking only visible windows: Tray applications and helper services can remain active after their main window closes. Confirm in Task Manager.
- Leaving protection disabled: Restore antivirus and firewall protection immediately after a supervised test.
- Reinstalling before isolating: A fresh game installation will still fail if an overlay, startup service, or security rule blocks it.
- Using random process termination: End only processes you can identify. Stopping Windows services can create new problems.
- Installing a replacement peripheral as a “fix”: No cited support evidence shows that buying hardware resolves this code. In particular, a Razer device is not a remedy when its companion software may be the conflict.
After Heroes launches successfully
Keep the change that solved the problem narrow. If an overlay caused the failure, leave only that overlay disabled rather than turning off all startup programs. If security software required an exception, retain the exception for the specific Blizzard and Heroes files and keep real-time protection enabled. If a driver update solved the issue, record the driver version and Windows build so you can identify a regression after a future update.
When you re-enable optional utilities, add them back individually and launch Heroes after each addition. This creates a simple compatibility record and avoids returning to a long, unexplained list of disabled programs.
