If you watch Prime Video in Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Opera on a Mac, HDR may not be broken at all. Amazon’s current computer requirements list macOS browser playback at up to HD, not 4K/UHD or HDR. Mac hardware and macOS can support HDR, but system settings cannot override Amazon’s browser quality limit. Try the official Mac app on macOS 14 or later, or use Prime Video’s native app on an HDR television, Apple TV 4K or Fire TV device for the most dependable result.
First, check whether Prime Video is running in a browser
Amazon lists the latest Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Opera as supported desktop browsers, with macOS playback limited to up to HD and stereo audio. See Amazon’s computer requirements. The listed Mac browser baseline is macOS 11.4 Big Sur or later.
That means an HDR badge on a title describes catalog metadata, not necessarily the stream delivered to your Mac. HDR expands brightness and color; 4K/UHD describes resolution; HD is Amazon’s documented browser maximum. A brighter or more saturated picture does not prove HDR is active, so check the television or monitor’s own input-information panel.
Safari’s HDR support for other services does not make Prime Video browser playback HDR-capable. Nor will a faster connection, subscription change, browser extension or new HDMI cable bypass an Amazon-side HD ceiling.

Try the official Prime Video Mac app
Amazon offers a Prime Video app in the Mac App Store at https://apps.apple.com/us/app/amazon-prime-video/id545519333?platform=mac. It requires macOS 14.0 or later and advertises “ultra-high-quality 4K streaming,” downloads and Picture-in-Picture. The public listing does not clearly promise HDR or Dolby Vision on macOS, so treat it as a test rather than a guaranteed fix.
- Install the app only from the Mac App Store and sign in.
- Update macOS and the app.
- Play at least two titles explicitly labeled UHD or HDR.
- Check the display’s signal-information panel while playback is running.
- If the display remains in SDR, describe the result as unconfirmed app support or an Amazon implementation limitation—not automatically as defective Mac hardware.
If the app is unavailable in your region, the documented computer route remains browser playback, capped at HD.
Check Mac and display HDR compatibility
Apple’s current guidance covers these Mac families: MacBook Pro (2018 or later), MacBook Air (2018 or later), iMac (2020 or later), iMac Pro, Mac mini (2018 or later), Mac Studio (2022 or later), Mac Pro (2019 or later) and Mac Neo. Model- and connection-specific limits apply; for example, some Intel Mac mini, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air configurations may be limited to 1080p for HDR content. Apple’s full guidance is at Play HDR video on Mac.
Built-in Apple displays and Pro Display XDR support Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HLG. Other compatible external displays generally need HDR10 support. Hardware compatibility still does not imply that Prime Video in a browser will deliver HDR.

Turn on HDR in macOS
- Open Apple menu → System Settings → Displays.
- Select the external display.
- Turn on High Dynamic Range if the control appears.
On older macOS versions, use Apple menu → System Preferences → Displays and enable the HDR option. Apple says this control appears for compatible third-party displays, not the built-in display. If it is absent, check the display, cable, adapter, Mac model and connection.
Connect the Mac to power
macOS can intentionally switch HDR video to SDR to conserve battery. Connect the Mac to power, or open Apple menu → System Settings → Battery → Options and turn off Optimise video streaming while on battery, when that option is present. This matters for an HDR-capable app or another HDR route; it cannot raise Prime Video browser playback above HD.
Fix the external-display signal chain
Use a direct connection
For testing, connect the Mac directly to the television or monitor. Temporarily remove an AV receiver, soundbar, dock, DisplayLink adapter, HDMI switch or unverified USB-C-to-HDMI adapter. Apple notes that devices in the path need HDR10 support and current firmware.
Check the television input
Some televisions enable HDR only on selected HDMI ports. Look for a manufacturer setting named Enhanced format, HDMI enhanced mode, Deep Color, UHD Color or 4K signal format. Labels vary by brand.

Verify HDCP
Amazon specifies HDCP 1.4 for HD and HDCP 2.2 for UHD and/or HDR external playback. Dolby Vision requires the display and every additional connected device to support Dolby Vision. See Amazon’s playback troubleshooting.
- Remove intermediate devices.
- Try another HDMI cable and an enhanced/UHD HDMI input.
- Update firmware for the display, receiver, dock or adapter.
- Test with one display connected.
- Restart the Mac and display after changing connections.
Apple’s HDMI and protected-playback guidance is available at Connect to HDMI from your Mac. A cable upgrade can resolve a real signal or HDCP fault, but it cannot unlock HDR in a browser that Amazon limits to HD.
Confirm whether HDR is actually active
- Use the television or monitor’s input-information panel; macOS’s Displays setting alone is not proof that Prime Video is sending HDR.
- Test multiple HDR/UHD titles because catalog labels and delivered formats can differ.
- Compare another known HDR source on the same display. If every source looks wrong, investigate the display’s HDR picture mode, firmware, profile or tone mapping.
- If the display never enters HDR, suspect the browser limitation, unsupported hardware, disabled macOS HDR, battery optimization or a cable/adapter/HDCP problem.
A display that enters HDR but looks dim can have an incorrect HDR picture mode, excessive ambient-light compensation, a poor master or tone-mapping issue. A dark image alone is not evidence that HDR is working.
What to do when Prime Video still plays SDR
Mac browser
Stop changing browser settings once you have confirmed playback is through Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Opera. Amazon’s published ceiling is up to HD, so there may be nothing local to repair.

- The USB-C digital AV multiport adapter lets you connect your USB-C enabled Mac or iPad to an HDMI display, while also connecting a standard USB device and a USB-C charging cable. This adapter allows you to mirror your Mac Display to your HDMI-enabled TV or display.
- Simply connect the adapter to a USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) port on your Mac or select iPad model and then to your TV or projector via an HDMI cable (sold separately).
- Use the standard USB port to connect devices such as your flash drive or camera or a USB cable for syncing and charging your iOS devices. You can also connect a charging cable to the USB-C port to charge your Mac, iPad, or iPhone.
- System Requirements: macOS Mojave 10.14.6 or later; iOS 12.4 or later
- Requires an HDMI cable (sold separately) for connection to your TV or projector. Supports both video and audio output.
Mac app
Keep the app, macOS, display and connection updated; test the built-in screen and a direct external connection. If HDR remains unconfirmed, do not purchase expensive hardware on the assumption that the Mac is at fault.
Native television or streaming-device app
For dependable Prime Video HDR, use the app built into an HDR television or a supported device such as Apple TV 4K or Fire TV. These routes have device-specific Prime Video implementations designed for UHD/HDR output, but require extra hardware, an HDMI connection and a compatible display. Apple TV 4K details: https://www.apple.com/apple-tv-4k/. Fire TV devices: https://www.amazon.com/fire-tv-stick-4k-max/.
Subscription entitlement is a separate check
Amazon’s 2026 announcement discusses HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision in Prime membership and a Prime Video Ultra plan, while a third-party report describes a conflicting 4K policy. Because commercial rules vary by region and may change, verify the current Amazon plan page for your account. In any case, entitlement does not establish that a particular Mac browser or app can output HDR.
Quick diagnosis
| Setup | Most likely conclusion | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| Mac browser | Amazon documents up to HD | Try the Mac app or a native TV/streaming-device app |
| Mac app, built-in display | HDR output is not clearly documented | Update, test multiple titles and verify the display signal |
| Mac app, external display | Connection, HDR setting or HDCP may be involved | Power the Mac, enable HDR, connect directly and check HDCP 2.2 |
| Native TV or streaming device | Best route for reliable Prime Video HDR | Use the device’s Prime Video app and compatible HDMI chain |

Can an HDMI cable fix Prime Video HDR?
It can fix a genuine bandwidth or HDCP problem in an HDR-capable app or device chain, but it cannot bypass Amazon’s up-to-HD browser limit.
Does a Prime Video Ultra subscription guarantee HDR on Mac?
No. Subscription entitlement and device/browser capability are separate; verify the plan for your region and the output capability of the playback route.
The Bottom Line
On a Mac browser, Prime Video HDR is usually unavailable by design: Amazon currently documents computer playback only up to HD. Test the macOS 14-or-later app, verify HDR through the display’s own signal panel, and use a native TV, Apple TV 4K or Fire TV app when reliable HDR matters.
