A mini PC that shows “HDMI no signal” usually has a break somewhere between the computer’s video output and the monitor’s selected input. Start with the monitor and cable, then remove adapters and docks, cross-test with another screen, and only after that troubleshoot Windows drivers or firmware. If the screen is blank before the mini PC shows its logo, treat it as a cable, port, connector, firmware, or hardware-routing problem rather than a Windows setting.
Start with the fastest signal-path checks
Follow these checks in order. They eliminate the most common causes without changing software or risking a BIOS update.

- Power both devices. Confirm that the monitor’s power light is on and that the mini PC is fully started. If the mini PC has a separate power button and power brick, check both connections.
- Select the HDMI input manually. Use the monitor’s Input, Source, or Menu control and choose the HDMI socket that the cable actually uses. Do not rely on automatic input detection.
- Reseat the cable. Unplug the HDMI cable at the mini PC and at the monitor, then push both ends firmly back in. A connector can look inserted while its contacts are not fully engaged.
- Remove intermediaries. Disconnect USB-C docks, HDMI switches, receivers, splitters, capture devices, and extension adapters. Connect the mini PC directly to the monitor with one cable.
- Try another cable. Use a known-good HDMI cable. If the mini PC has a mini-HDMI socket, use the correct mini-HDMI-to-HDMI cable or a properly fitted adapter; a full-size HDMI plug cannot be forced into a mini-HDMI port.
- Try another output and display. If the mini PC has more than one video output, test each one. Connect it to another monitor or television, or connect the original monitor to another computer.
These tests separate an input-selection or cable fault from a mini PC, monitor, or output-port fault. Intel’s external-display guidance specifically recommends testing a different monitor or television and HDMI cable, while Microsoft’s guidance begins with checking that the cable is secure.

| What you see | Most likely branch | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| No image from the moment you press the power button; no manufacturer logo or firmware screen | Physical connection, wrong connector, wrong output, firmware, or hardware | Use a direct known-good cable and display, verify the port and GPU output, and check BIOS/UEFI or manufacturer support. |
| The logo or BIOS screen appears, then the monitor reports no signal as Windows loads | Windows display mode, graphics driver, resolution, or refresh-rate problem | Use Windows display shortcuts and then repair or change the display driver. |
| Windows desktop appears, but the screen goes blank after login, sleep, or a resolution change | Display mode or driver state | Reset the graphics driver, cycle projection modes, and undo a recent driver or display-setting change. |
| The display works with another monitor or cable only | Original monitor, cable, or compatibility issue | Keep the working combination, then replace or isolate the failed component. |
| No display on any known-good monitor, including before Windows starts | Mini PC output, firmware, power, or hardware fault | Check every physical output and firmware-recovery option; contact the manufacturer if the failure persists. |
If Windows is running but the screen is blank
Cycle Windows projection modes
Press Windows+P. A projection panel may appear even when the monitor is not displaying normally. Press the shortcut repeatedly, pausing briefly between presses, to move through the available modes such as PC screen only, Duplicate, Extend, and Second screen only. Stop on the mode that sends an image to the HDMI monitor. If you are using a second display, “Extend” or “Duplicate” is normally appropriate; “PC screen only” can intentionally disable the external screen.
Reset the graphics driver
Press Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B. Microsoft documents this shortcut for resetting the graphics driver. A successful reset can produce a short beep or a brief screen flicker. Wait several seconds before trying another command. This does not reinstall the driver or erase files; it only restarts the graphics subsystem.
Check Windows display detection
- Open Settings.
- Choose System, then Display.
- Under the display layout, select Multiple displays and choose Detect if it is available.
- Select the detected monitor and confirm a sensible resolution and refresh rate. Start with the monitor’s recommended or native settings rather than an unusual high-refresh mode.
If Settings cannot be reached on the blank screen, use the mini PC’s built-in display if one is available, connect temporarily to another monitor, or use Remote Desktop or another existing remote-management method. Do not change several display settings at once; changing one variable makes the result easier to interpret.

Update the display adapter
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the listed graphics adapter and choose Update driver.
- Choose the option to search automatically, or install the current driver supplied by the mini PC or graphics-chip manufacturer.
- Restart the mini PC and test the direct HDMI connection again.
Manufacturer drivers are preferable to generic driver-updater programs because they are matched to the mini PC’s firmware, graphics hardware, and supported operating-system build.
Roll back a driver that caused the failure
- In Device Manager > Display adapters, open the adapter’s Properties.
- Select the Driver tab.
- Choose Roll Back Driver if Windows offers it, then restart.
If Roll Back Driver is unavailable, choose Uninstall device, restart, and then install the correct driver from the mini PC manufacturer. Record the adapter name and Windows edition before uninstalling so you can obtain the right package if the automatic reinstall does not complete.
Check the connector, cable, and port type
Full-size HDMI versus mini-HDMI
Mini PCs may use full-size HDMI, mini-HDMI, or another video connector. Mini-HDMI is physically smaller and requires a mini-HDMI-to-HDMI cable or a compatible adapter. Confirm the port label and shape against the mini PC’s manual or chassis markings. Do not confuse mini-HDMI with micro-HDMI; the two connectors are different sizes.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Inspect the plug and socket for bent contacts, looseness, dust, or mechanical damage. A cable that works when held at an angle indicates a physical connection problem, not a Windows projection setting. Replace it rather than continuing to flex the connector.

Check the monitor side
Monitors with several HDMI sockets may assign different capabilities to each input. Try every HDMI input and select it manually. If the monitor has an input-label or compatibility option, use its ordinary HDMI mode first rather than a special high-bandwidth or legacy mode. Test the monitor with another computer to confirm that it can display an HDMI source.
Remove adapters and docks during diagnosis
USB-C docks and HDMI adapters can introduce power, firmware, bandwidth, or compatibility failures. They can also route video through a different graphics device than the mini PC’s built-in HDMI port. For the first test, bypass every accessory. Once the direct HDMI path works, reconnect one accessory at a time and test after each change.
Verify which graphics output should be used
A mini PC can expose more than one video output, and the sockets may not all be connected to the same graphics processor.
Integrated graphics versus a discrete GPU
If the system has a discrete graphics card, connect the monitor to the card’s video output rather than a motherboard video port unless the system documentation explicitly supports both. MSI notes that a motherboard video port cannot provide output when the processor has no integrated graphics. In that situation, the motherboard HDMI socket can appear completely dead even though the discrete GPU works normally.

When the mini PC has multiple outputs, test one at a time. Disconnect other monitors while diagnosing so that Windows cannot silently assign the active image to a different screen.
Check for an output that is disabled in firmware
Some systems expose graphics-selection options in BIOS/UEFI, such as integrated, discrete, hybrid, or multi-monitor modes. If you can reach firmware on another display, verify that the intended graphics device and display outputs are enabled. Avoid changing unrelated firmware settings, and record the original value before changing a graphics option.

- Shut down the mini PC completely and unplug unnecessary USB devices, storage devices, hubs, and docks.
- Connect one known-good HDMI cable directly to one monitor.
- Confirm the monitor is on the selected HDMI input before powering the mini PC.
- Try each native video output, observing whether any produces a logo or firmware screen.
- Test the same mini PC with a second monitor or television and test the original monitor with another computer.
If the mini PC supports a BIOS or firmware update, read the manufacturer’s exact procedure. Intel’s NUC guidance includes checking for current BIOS and graphics software and describes BIOS-recovery paths for supported models. A failed or interrupted firmware update can leave a system unable to display an image, so use only the package and recovery method intended for the exact model.

Firmware on the monitor or television
Intel advises checking HDMI and television firmware when an external display remains unavailable after cable and cross-tests. Use the display maker’s documented update process and keep the display connected to stable power. Firmware updates can change input compatibility, handshake behavior, or supported resolutions, but they will not repair a damaged cable or a dead mini PC output.
Use cross-testing to identify the failed component
| Test result | What it points to | Practical conclusion |
|---|---|---|
| Mini PC works on another monitor with the same cable | Original monitor input, monitor settings, or monitor hardware | Set the original monitor’s input manually, test its other HDMI sockets, then service or replace the monitor if it fails with another computer too. |
| Original monitor works with another computer, but mini PC fails on every display | Mini PC output, graphics configuration, firmware, or hardware | Check the correct GPU output and BIOS/UEFI; persistent pre-boot failure requires manufacturer support. |
| A second HDMI cable fixes the problem | Original cable or connector fit | Retire the failing cable; do not use an adapter chain to compensate for a damaged plug. |
| Direct HDMI works, but a dock or adapter fails | Accessory compatibility, power, bandwidth, or dock firmware | Update or replace the accessory, or keep the direct connection for reliable display output. |
| Logo appears, but Windows loses the image | Projection mode, driver, resolution, or refresh rate | Use Windows+P, reset the graphics driver, and repair or roll back the display adapter. |
Common mistakes that prolong “no signal” problems
- Changing Windows settings when there is no pre-boot image: if the logo never appears, start with hardware, output routing, and firmware.
- Assuming the monitor will select the right input: manually choose the HDMI socket.
- Testing through a dock first: remove it so the basic HDMI path is known-good.
- Buying the wrong cable: verify full-size HDMI, mini-HDMI, or micro-HDMI before purchasing.
- Using a motherboard port with a processor that lacks integrated graphics: connect to the discrete GPU instead.
- Installing a generic driver utility before the manufacturer package: use the mini PC maker’s driver and firmware instructions first.
- Updating BIOS without model verification: a package for a similar-looking model can make recovery harder.
When to contact the mini PC manufacturer
Contact support after you have tested a known-good cable, a second display, every appropriate native video output, and a direct connection without adapters. Report whether the failure occurs before the logo or only after Windows starts, the exact connector type, the monitor models tested, and the results of the cross-tests. If there is no POST image on any known-good display, persistent output-port failure, visible connector damage, or a failed firmware-recovery attempt, provide those details rather than repeatedly reinstalling Windows.
There is no authoritative failure-rate statistic for HDMI no-signal incidents in the cited support guidance; the official material is procedural. That makes the cross-test results more useful than guessing at how often any one cause occurs.
