If your Samsung TV will not show 4K at 120 Hz, VRR is missing, or an HDMI 2.1 connection keeps dropping out, start with the TV’s exact model code and the HDMI port you are using. Samsung does not put every HDMI 2.1 feature on every television or every port. Then verify the cable, enable the required gaming settings, check the console or PC output, and update both the TV and PC software where applicable.
The sequence below separates an unsupported combination from a setting, cable, or software fault, so you do not buy a cable to solve a limitation that the TV or source cannot overcome.

What must be true for 4K 120Hz or VRR to work
4K at 120 frames per second and variable refresh rate (VRR) are end-to-end features. The television, the individual HDMI port, the cable, and the source device must all support the mode you select. A label such as “HDMI 2.1” on a television or graphics card is not, by itself, proof that every port supports every HDMI 2.1 feature.

Check these five requirements
- TV model: the full model code and, where relevant, screen size and sales region must list 4K/120 Hz and/or VRR.
- TV port: the source must be connected to a port that supports the desired mode. Look for the game-controller icon or the port description in the manual.
- Cable: Samsung specifies a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for 4K at 120 FPS in its PC guidance.
- TV settings: Game Mode and Input Signal Plus may be required for the port in use.
- Source: the console or PC must be able to output the selected resolution, refresh rate, and VRR format.
Step 1: identify the exact TV model and the correct HDMI port
Do not begin by assuming that HDMI port 4 is the 4K/120 port. Port assignments vary by model and year. Samsung’s US NVIDIA instructions identify selected 2021 examples in which HDMI 2.1 support is limited to port 4, while Samsung’s Canada Game Mode guidance says some sets have more than one 4K/120-capable port and marks those ports with a gaming icon. Those statements are both model-specific, not contradictory universal rules.
Find the complete model code
- Open the TV’s Support or About screen and record the complete model code, including letters, numbers, and size suffixes.
- If the TV is not accessible, read the label on the rear panel, the original box, or the purchase record.
- Use that exact code in Samsung’s regional support site to open the matching specification page and user manual.
- Confirm the advertised feature for your screen size and region. A series name alone is not precise enough.
Choose the port from the manual or icon
Connect the console or PC directly to the HDMI socket identified for 4K/120 Hz. A game-controller icon is a useful visual clue, but the manual is decisive when the icon is absent or several ports are marked. If the manual says only one port supports HDMI 2.1, use that port even if another socket accepts the plug and displays a picture.
Samsung’s Canada article is written for televisions sold in Canada and warns that screenshots and menu locations can differ by model and software version. Its regional qualification and port guidance are available at Use Game Mode on your Samsung TV.
Step 2: verify the cable and simplify the connection
For a 4K/120 FPS connection, use a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Samsung explicitly says this cable class is required for features such as 4K at 120 FPS or 8K at 60 FPS in its PC/NVIDIA instructions: Game on your Samsung TV with a NVIDIA graphics card. Certification is a requirement for the signal mode, not a guarantee that an unsupported TV port will gain new capabilities.

Run a direct test
- Turn off the TV and source device.
- Disconnect an AV receiver, soundbar HDMI switch, capture device, or extender from the video path.
- Connect the source directly to the verified TV port with the Ultra High Speed cable.
- Test 4K/120 Hz or VRR before reconnecting other equipment.
- If the direct connection works, add intermediary equipment back one item at a time and test after each change.
The direct-connection procedure is a diagnostic isolation step. Samsung’s cited guidance establishes the cable requirement; it does not claim that every receiver, switch, or soundbar causes 4K/120 failures. For a fixed installation, compare the cable’s certification and length with the needs of the run, and make sure the connector is fully seated at both ends.
What a cable test can and cannot prove
- A known-good certified cable can eliminate a common signal-integrity variable.
- A successful 4K/120 test confirms that this particular cable and path can carry that mode under the current setup.
- A failed test with a new cable does not prove the TV is defective; the port, setting, source output, or firmware may still be the cause.
- A cable cannot add HDMI 2.1 capability to an HDMI 2.0-only port or make a source generate 120 frames per second.
Step 3: turn on Samsung’s gaming settings
Enable Game Mode
When a console is detected, Game Mode will generally turn on automatically. Samsung notes that automatic detection does not occur with every console, so check the TV’s gaming status instead of assuming it is active. For a PC, Samsung says Game Mode does not turn on automatically; enable it manually from the TV’s quick settings.
- Open Quick Settings on the TV.
- Select All Settings.
- Open Connection.
- Choose External Device Manager.
- Open Game Mode Settings and switch Game Mode on, or choose the available low-latency option.
Exact labels differ by model and software. If you cannot find the same path, search the TV’s settings for “Game Mode” while the source is connected.
Enable Input Signal Plus for the active port
Input Signal Plus expands the signal range for compatible HDMI sources. Samsung’s Canada guidance gives this path: Settings/Quick Settings → All Settings → Connection → External Device Manager → Input Signal Plus. Select the HDMI socket used by the console or PC and enable the option, then retest the signal.

On Samsung models from 2018 and earlier, the equivalent control may be called HDMI UHD Color rather than Input Signal Plus. Samsung’s older-model terminology and UHD gaming settings are documented in How to optimize UHD gaming settings on a Samsung TV.
If enabling the setting produces a blank screen, wait for the TV to recover, switch back to the previous input, and lower the source output temporarily. Then confirm that the cable and source support the higher mode before trying again.
Step 4: check the console or PC output
Console checks
The console must support 4K output at 120 Hz and the particular VRR mode you want to use. Open the console’s video-output settings and verify that 4K resolution, 120 Hz output, and VRR are enabled where those options exist. Menu names and availability differ between console models, so use the console maker’s current instructions rather than applying a menu path from a different system.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Check the console’s own compatibility or signal-information screen if it provides one.
- Set the output to a mode the TV and game support; some games offer a separate 120-FPS performance mode.
- If the console reports that 120 Hz or VRR is unavailable, return to the TV-port and cable checks before changing picture settings.
PC checks
For a PC, the graphics card, driver, operating system, game, and display settings all affect the result. Samsung’s NVIDIA setup instructions call for installing the required graphics drivers and keeping the TV software current.

- Wide compatibility: Compatible with Apple TV/PS5/PS4 Pro/Roku Stick, Xbox Series X/S/Xbox 360, Nintendo Switch/Switch 2, Wii U, Mac mini M4/M4 Pro, Laptop, PC, Blu-ray player, AV Receiver, TV stick, TV Box, DVD player, LG 8K UHD TV, Samsung G8/G9 QLED TV, Soundbar, Projector, Monitor and more
- Install the current driver for the graphics card from its manufacturer.
- In the operating system’s display controls, select the Samsung TV and choose 3840 × 2160 with a 120 Hz refresh rate when the option is offered.
- Enable the graphics card’s compatible VRR technology if the card and TV support it.
- Apply the setting, wait for the TV to resync, and confirm that the active signal reports 120 Hz.
- If 120 Hz is missing, test a lower resolution or refresh rate briefly. This distinguishes a signal-path limit from a game-specific setting, but it is not a substitute for the TV’s stated specification.
Do not infer PC performance from the refresh-rate option alone. A display can accept a 120 Hz signal while a particular game renders fewer than 120 frames per second.
Step 5: update the TV and retest from a clean state
Samsung advises checking for TV software updates because an update may resolve a TV problem. Install any available update through the TV’s support or software-update menu, following the instructions shown for your model.
- Record the current TV software version before updating.
- Install the available update and allow the TV to restart fully.
- Restart the console or PC as well.
- Reconnect the source to the verified 4K/120 port with the certified cable.
- Recheck Game Mode, Input Signal Plus, output resolution, refresh rate, and VRR.
- Use the TV’s signal-information or gaming-status display if your model provides one.
The restart and signal-status checks are practical diagnostics. Samsung’s documentation specifically establishes the value of current TV software and, for PC use, current graphics drivers; it does not prescribe one universal restart sequence for every model.
Use the symptom to choose the next check
4K works, but 120 Hz is not offered
- Confirm that the source is on the HDMI port specified for 4K/120, not merely a port that displays 4K.
- Replace the cable with a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable and test the direct connection.
- Enable Input Signal Plus, or HDMI UHD Color on older models.
- Check the source’s own refresh-rate menu and graphics driver.
- Verify that the exact TV model and size support 4K/120; some models support 4K but top out below 120 Hz.
VRR is missing while 4K/120 works
VRR is a separate compatibility check. Confirm that both the TV model and source support the same VRR implementation, and that VRR is enabled on the source. Do not promise VRR solely because the television has an HDMI 2.1 label or because it accepts a 120 Hz signal. Samsung’s public pages reviewed here do not provide a complete compatibility matrix for every current TV, console, graphics card, firmware version, and region. If the option remains absent, consult the support page and manual for the exact model.
Best Value
- Cable length: 3m / 10ft
- Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable Certified (w/ Hologram Sticker)
- 48Gbps bandwidth for latest features HDR, HDCP 2.2 & 2.3, DTS:X, Dolby Atmos, Dolby Vision
- 8K60, 4K120 & up to 10K resolution, Dynamic HDR, eARC, ALLM, QFT, QMS, VRR
- Backward compatible with earlier versions of HDMI and can be used with any HDMI devices.
The picture flashes, goes black, or repeatedly reconnects
- Power off both devices and reseat the HDMI connectors.
- Test the source directly on the TV, bypassing switches and receivers.
- Use a certified Ultra High Speed cable of suitable length.
- Try the model’s designated gaming port and confirm Input Signal Plus is enabled.
- Lower the output temporarily to a known stable mode, then raise resolution, refresh rate, and VRR one setting at a time.
- Update the TV and PC graphics driver where applicable.
Intermittent symptoms can indicate a marginal cable or intermediary, but they can also result from an unsupported signal mode. A stable lower mode is evidence for further isolation, not proof of a particular failed component.
Game Mode will not stay on
Check whether the source is identified as a PC or console and whether the setting is being changed in the correct HDMI input. Samsung says console detection is generally automatic but not universal, and that PC users must enable Game Mode manually. Reopen the setting after changing inputs because some models store gaming options per input.
Model, year, and region caveats
Samsung’s support pages are not a universal database. The Canada article applies to televisions sold in Canada and warns that options can differ in other countries. Screenshots and menu labels also change with model and software version. Samsung’s US NVIDIA page lists selected models, including 2021 examples where HDMI 2.1 is limited to port 4, and notes size-related limitations for certain The Frame televisions.

When the problem is probably a hardware or compatibility limit
After the model, port, cable, settings, source, and software checks, a missing option may be expected rather than faulty. Examples include a television whose specification omits 4K/120, a source that cannot generate the selected mode, or a port that supports only lower-bandwidth HDMI features. The reviewed Samsung guidance does not establish a complete matrix covering every current combination, so avoid treating a general series name or purchase year as proof.
Escalate with useful details: the full TV model code and region, the HDMI port used, cable certification and approximate length, source model, selected resolution and refresh rate, whether Input Signal Plus is enabled, software versions, and the exact on-screen error. This information lets Samsung or the source-device maker compare your setup with the model-specific documentation instead of repeating generic cable swaps.
Quick Recap
Quick checklist
- Record the TV’s complete model code, size, region, and software version.
- Verify 4K/120 and VRR support for that exact model.
- Use the HDMI port identified for 4K/120, often marked with a game-controller icon.
- Connect directly with a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
- Enable Game Mode; remember that PC connections require manual activation.
- Enable Input Signal Plus, or HDMI UHD Color on 2018-and-older models.
- Set the console or PC to a supported resolution, refresh rate, and VRR mode.
- Update the TV and, for a PC, the graphics driver.
- Retest after restarting both devices and check the active signal information.
- If VRR still does not appear, use the exact model’s manual and regional support page rather than assuming HDMI 2.1 guarantees it.
