If HBO Max keeps buffering while you watch Lanterns, first check whether the problem happens on just one device or on several devices using the same network. That quick comparison helps separate a device or app issue from a shared connection problem. Max’s support pages give general playback troubleshooting steps; they do not identify a technical fault specific to Lanterns.
Why does HBO Max keep buffering?
Buffering can happen when an internet connection is slow or inconsistent, but the cause may be limited to a particular device, app installation, or browser configuration. Max recommends testing another supported device on the same network to help identify which kind of problem you are dealing with.
- Try another device on the same network. Play Max on a second supported phone, TV, tablet, or computer connected to the same Wi-Fi or wired network. If both devices buffer, investigate the shared connection. If only one does, focus on that device, its app, or its browser.
- Check your connection and competing use. Max lists a minimum download speed of 5 Mbps for HD streaming and recommends 50+ Mbps for 4K in guidance for selected devices. These are Max support recommendations, not a promise of smooth playback: connection consistency, other household traffic, device limits, and local network conditions also matter. Ask other people on the network to pause bandwidth-heavy activity while you retry.
- Restart the network and playback device. Max’s steps vary by device. For mobile devices and computers, its instructions include powering off the playback device, unplugging the modem and router for 30 seconds, reconnecting them, and trying playback again. Follow the instructions for your specific platform rather than assuming every TV or streaming device has the same restart procedure.
- Update Max and your device software. Install available updates, then restart the app or device. Depending on the platform, Max also recommends signing out, clearing app cache or data, or reinstalling the app.
- Try Ethernet if your equipment supports it. Max recommends a wired connection for supported devices; its example is connecting a computer to the router with Ethernet. Make sure the player and router have compatible ports and that cables are firmly connected. A wired test can help determine whether Wi-Fi is contributing to the problem, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
Why does Max keep pausing, or buffer only sometimes?
Note when the interruptions occur and what else is happening on the network. Intermittent buffering that coincides with heavy household internet use points toward a shared connection issue; persistent trouble on only one player points more toward that device, app, or playback surface. Compare the symptoms before changing several settings at once.
- Several devices pause or buffer: retry after reducing competing network activity, then restart the network equipment using the instructions for your playback device.
- One device has the problem: update and restart it, then use Max’s device-specific steps for the app, including clearing cache or data or reinstalling if those options apply.
- The problem occurs only in a browser: use an updated supported browser or try another supported browser. Check browser settings, including third-party cookies; temporarily disable ad-blocking software and extensions; turn off private or incognito mode; clear cache and cookies; and restart the computer. These are Max’s browser troubleshooting suggestions, not proof that a particular extension is responsible.
Why does HBO Max buffer only on my TV?
If other devices stream Max normally on the same network, concentrate on the TV or streaming device rather than changing the whole network first. Check for updates to both the Max app and the device software, then restart the device. If buffering continues, consult the instructions for that device to find the appropriate steps for signing out, clearing app data, or reinstalling Max. Menu names and available options differ by platform, so a single universal TV menu path would be misleading.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If other devices also buffer, treat the issue as a possible shared-network problem: reduce competing activity, check the connection, and restart the network equipment. For a TV or streaming player with compatible Ethernet ports, a wired test is an option; not every device supports it.
How fast does my internet need to be for Max?
Max’s support guidance says, “To stream HD video, you need a minimum download speed of 5 Mbps.” It recommends 50+ Mbps for 4K in instructions for selected devices. The help pages do not establish those figures as universal guarantees: a speed result alone does not show whether a connection is stable, whether other devices are using it, or whether the player supports the requested video quality. If playback still buffers at those speeds, use the device comparison and troubleshooting steps above.

Why does Max keep buffering on Wi-Fi?
Wi-Fi is only one possible factor. Max says a slow or inconsistent internet connection can cause buffering or poor video quality, but a problem confined to one app or device can look similar. Compare Max on another supported device using the same Wi-Fi, and note whether pauses occur across devices or only on one.
If the trouble appears confined to Wi-Fi, pause heavy network use and retry. Where both the player and router permit a wired connection, test Ethernet and ensure the cables are firmly connected. If Ethernet works while Wi-Fi does not, that comparison suggests the wireless connection may be involved; it does not by itself identify the precise cause.
