Start by identifying which service returned the error. Happo uses its own API key and secret; GitHub’s GITHUB_TOKEN is for GitHub API access and is not a substitute. Check the failing command, the credentials Happo’s configuration reads, and whether those credentials reach the step that runs Happo.
First, identify which authentication boundary failed
Find the exact failing step in the Actions log and note its command, client or action name, version, response status, and error text. A 401 from a Happo request points to Happo authentication. A 401 or 403 from a GitHub API request points instead to that request’s token, permissions, or repository scope. Do not change credentials until you know which host or command rejected them.

GitHub documents that its built-in GITHUB_TOKEN can access resources within the workflow’s repository; it does not authenticate to Happo. If a GitHub API call needs access to resources outside that repository, GitHub identifies a GitHub App as an option.
Confirm Happo’s configuration reads the right variables
Happo’s npm package example sets apiKey and apiSecret from HAPPO_API_KEY and HAPPO_API_SECRET. Check the configuration file used by the failing job and make sure its variable names match the names you intend to provide. A secret stored under a different name will not populate these variables automatically.

Storing a credential in GitHub settings does not by itself make it available to every command. Map the secrets into the environment of the specific step that invokes Happo. For example, if the configuration reads the variables above:

Check secret scope, timing, and workflow trigger
- Repository or organization secret: GitHub reads these when a workflow run is queued.
- Environment secret: The job must reference the corresponding environment. GitHub reads its secrets when that job starts.
- Duplicate names: If the same secret name exists at organization, repository, and environment levels, the environment-level secret takes precedence.
- Workflow event: Confirm that the event which triggered the run is allowed to receive the credentials you expect. Secret availability can depend on the event; check GitHub’s current Actions secrets guidance for the exact event before changing workflow permissions.
If an environment-level secret was updated after a run was queued, verify the job actually started with the intended environment value. Also check that the job’s environment name matches the one where the secrets are configured.
For direct API calls, verify the documented authentication format
This check is relevant only if the failing step makes a direct request to the Happo API and your integration constructs authentication itself. Happo documents two formats:

- HTTP Basic: Base64-encode the string
apiKey:apiSecretand send it as the Basic authorization credential. - JWT: Sign a token with the API secret, use
{ key: <your API key> }as the payload, set the JWTkidheader to the API key, and send the token as a Bearer credential.
Do not hand-roll a change between these formats to fix a CLI or package setup unless the failing code makes the direct API request and expects the format you are changing. Prefer the authentication handling provided by the Happo client in use.
Update the client and rotate credentials when needed
Check the installed Happo CLI or package version and follow its current configuration documentation rather than assuming an older setup still applies. Happo’s changelog records “Improved CLI authentication” in version 17.21 on December 5, 2025, and “Clearer job failures” in version 17.145 on September 3, 2026. Those entries make the client version and job output worth checking; neither identifies the cause of a particular failure.

If a key or secret was pasted incorrectly, or may have been exposed, rotate the Happo API secret through the appropriate account controls and replace the corresponding GitHub secret. Do not put live credentials in a workflow file, issue, or log.

If the error still persists
Send Happo support a redacted failing command, the exact response and status, the client version, the workflow trigger, and confirmation of which secret scope the job uses. Remove credential values and any sensitive request data. Happo lists [email protected] for technical support.
